Think the MG ZS EV is going to be a winner with people dipping their toes into the EV world. For the price it will be hard to beat. Great review as usual.
I'm sorry to hear that it doesn't regenerate while in MG pilot. Will there be over the air updates in the future like a tesla or VW ID series? . OTR is the way forward for EV'S because there's very little that goes wrong with them and kind of future proofs them. Electricity and software technology are very compatible where as I.C.E and software is not.
Will probably buy this car - insane value but why on earth are there only two headrests? Second lets hope Saic/MG are wise enough to offer battery-upgrades for longer range, for a fee of course.
Thanks for the comment Slava. That's great news! No idea re the headrests, I suppose you'll rarely get a tall adult in the middle? The new MG 5 estate has a larger battery and cheaper price (in the UK to the ZS EV) so let's hope the same will happen here. Also really looking for to the next version of this but don't let that hold you back!
Thanks for the comment Eoin. I couldn't agree more and the MG 5 estate EV coming soon will be even better with a bigger battery and cheaper price point
Hi, thanks for your review EV Ireland. I have one bought new from Johnson Perrott MG Cork. I've gone for new exclusive model. As one young child and lethear et was a big seller. 5 star safety rating is a big plus. Worth to note from reviews in UK, less miles in winter vs summer. Updates are key. EV is the way to go now and you just need to plan your trip. If your going Dublin to cork, plan where you will stop on the apps that show electric chargers. Very good value for money and you get free home 7kw charger at home installed. That's worth over 1k
@@NevoEVReviewIreland I went with white. I think the free home 7kw charger and granny cable is a real bonus to shoppers. It's due to arrive during the week by delivery under current restrictions
Great review, Australian here and very interested in one of these (hoping the speedo is definitely in kph for us). It seems to be the first truely affordable EV on the whole bloody continent. Leaf e+ with extended range is coming soon but that's expected to be close to $60K AUD. And Tesla 3 is about $80k when all is said and done. Just discovered this ZS goes for $45k here so very excited. Your accent is lovely btw!
Unfortunately I liked the car , but no regen on cruise is just ridicules. Not efficient at all , and will have you a brake service earlier. No sale for me.
Thanks for the comment Byron. It's a funny one alright. Future models potentially and I wonder if it's the same on the MG 5? I'll be reviewing it in the new year
@@NevoEVReviewIreland IM relying on MG 5 to be good. Must be efficient charge faster than 70kw. Cruise and speed limiter. App. Heat pump. 16 “ tyres. Leather. And 170-200bhp. Would be nice.
I've had mine about 6 months. It's not such an issue because you use Pilot on motorways and there isn't that much heavy and therefore regen braking there. When it does auto brake hard it grinds a bit as the car pumps up pressure on the brakes so they can work. But as a I say, this happens maybe once every couple of days
Thanks for the comment and question Mark. There are a few specialist doing high end conversions to electric but nobody to my knowledge carrying out conversions for mass market combustion engined vehicles. I would also agree with your statement.
I found it tight sitting behind my seat position. At head rest sticks into my neck spine. If lifted it comes clean out. It’s a top Machine apart from that.
Nice and detailed! (Funny that someone commented it was "too long" - as if there aren't plenty of very short videos out there.). Other reviewers also mentioned the infotainment screen being very reflective, although I can see what looks like a pull-tab at the top-right on yours… does it have a protective layer from the factory that no-one has removed, maybe?
Glad you liked it! The tab looking thing is a proximity sensor built behind the clear plastic to know when your hand is about to touch the screen I think.
Great review. Put 7k on mine so far and wouldn't disagree with a word... Except for CCS charging. Topping out about 40kw on these colder days. I believe there's a new software update that allows you to turn on the battery heater though to enable higher speeds.
@@NevoEVReviewIreland apparently if you take the battery update it invalidates your warranty which seems very odd. The absence of an app in Europe is a frustration - and this is because MG won't install a European server which would then comply with the EU GDPR rules
Hi Derek, hope all is well with you. Word back from MG Ireland. The headlamps are halogen and they do have intelligent high beam assistance. Daytime running lights are LED.
Great car. I took one for a test drive a couple of weeks ago (Queensland Australia). I don't know why manufacturers keep using piano black finishes - I have never seen a review on any brand of car that is complementary of piano black switch surrounds. MG should spend $50 extra to upgrade the processor/memory of the infotainment system as it is a touch point used regularly.
Thanks for the comment. It's obviously the trend at the moment and will soon pass re the piano black. I'd say an upgrade is in the works but as mentioned, plugging in your smartphone solves it.
I agree, but to be honest I haven't seen lots of marking and keep a cloth in the car to give it a wipe every few days while at traffic lights. The screen isn't too bad although the nav system can be frustrating to enter an address into. Again doesn't matter for me as I use my android phone maps cos they give you traffic alerts
We've had our's since Nov 2020 and after 6,000 klms generally happy. Interesting with the slight differences between country models. Aust has only Essence avail, 5 yr body and 8 yr battery warranty, 3x iso fix in back, no DAB radio, only 10 amp portable charger. Great honest everyday persons review. This is what we need to help people learn about and choose the best EV for their needs. 👍
Thanks for the comment Electric Car Australia. It is very interesting to hear about the regional and country differences alright. Has there been many of them sold over there?
I think it's a great buy for the Irish market, especially the Exclusive model, with that great sunroof and handy features. Hassle is EVs seem to be getting bigger by the day, parking is always a problem unless you're lucky enough to have off-street parking. Might be worth waiting for the new MG models (incl. the proposed super mini) to come out but that'll be at least a year or 2 away though. The good thing is that MG has shaken up the EV market with this reasonably priced fun(nish) EV.
Thanks for the comment Andrew. Not just EVs getting bigger. A very valid point. Will be interesting to see if the smaller EVs will take off in the Irish market.
I’m currently looking at EV on motability scheme and having driven Renault Zoe 135 GT for a couple of months, I almost got it until it came up as a £500 up front cost. I gave this a test drive & watched reviews & at only £99 advance for the MG ZS Exclusive model with all the additional features/size & same tech spec, I’m going to sign on the dotted line as it’s much better value. Renault really need to rethink their competition now. Great review.
your "conclusion and outro" is actually just an outro. a good conclusion would have direct comparisons against other budget EVs, such as the ID.3 and Honda E. i know you scattered some commentary against competitors throughout the video, but there should be a summary to be the conclusion.
Thanks Larry for the comment and you're correct. I'll take that feedback onboard and do a better job of concluding in future reviews. I've a few already recorded but hit subscribe and the notification bell to see your feedback come to life!
Good review as usual but missing some important information from MG about warranty and rusting this is probably why most reviews looking at electirc vehicles miss the MG, which i thought was a fantastic bit of kit for the money and still looks, drives like a ordinary car. Upon closer inspection of recent complaints MG zs EVs rust like mad (queue the 1970s car industry) especially since Henkel helped the chinese to go green in terms of its galvanising process which resulted in a spray on coat rather than the old process of fully dipping panels into zinc. Follow the yellow brick road to the MG warranty document to check the situation and although they state a generous 7 year warranty, this is in fact totally misleading. MG warranty varies from component to component weirdly enough especially when it comes to anti-perforation they dont cover serious manufacturing issues leading to rusting (despite them telling you its covered), unless its surface rust on panel work and unless the rust has created holes in the panels to peer through. Therefore any rusting of the car chasis or membranes will not be covered. If you are lucky enough and early enough to put in a claim, make sure the vehicle is inspected year in year out (documented) and is maintained or else MG wont accept any liability . In terms of the reality of this for the consumer and from the complaints to MG already about the car, most of the rust was seen between the seams of the steel underneath the vehicle. Therefore, before MG will validate any claim scarily enough you may just have a car failling its MOT just before such a claim covered in holes before MG takes action albeit on the back of a goodwill gesture to the customer. I advise anyone buying these buckets to check the sills, undercarriage, suspension, interior especially around the pedals for water and the circuit box which has led to all manner of electrical issues including automatic wipers activating and the horn sounding off at random moments. MG suspension has at the rear steel cups which see a collection of water that will evenutally rust the whole suspension spring, top down. In the words of one MG owner who defended the company MG sells around about 300,000 cars a year, a few defects are expected. However, firstly i would want to be the unlucky chum to take legal action against MG to fix my automobile. On considering the price of a MG zs EV still, i would not want to buy one just to find out the customer would need to rust proof the thing because china was cutting corners just to be green. i for one am out and sadly now would not purchase one of these vehicles unless it had been checked by both a mechanic, technician and a industrial chemist.
The towing answer as gleaned from UK forums. A tow bar is available for the petrol version but not the EV. Its the same fit but the EV is not homolgated for towing. Therefore MG say no and there may be warranty and insurance implications. Can a tow bar be used for carrying cycles as that isn't towing? Probably the answer is yes but it's as clear as mud. A company in N. Denmark is making a tow bar rack specifically for cycles. An enthusiast in the Uk has mounted a bar and patched in the electrics. If a dealer would fit a towbar they seem very expensive. Secondary market bars are in very short supply at the moment with no knowledge/expectation when more will arrive.
Good review, I've had my ZS EV since Jan 23rd 2020 (coming up to a year next week!) and have had no issues or problems in that time. I took the car to Ireland over the Christmas period, temp was about 2 deg C and rain, but only had 2 charge stops from Dublin to Galway, one at Athlone Ionity where I got over 51 kw/h charge speed (which is great for the temp at the time!). Overall I would recommend the car, for the money it is much better value than any other EV (except the new MG5 which has just released here in the UK!!). One note on the review, I would have put the Q&A before the driving section as a lot of the questions were answered during the drive, otherwise, good job :)
Thanks for the comment. Not a cop out but I had a the top of the range MG and the top of the range ID.4 1st Edition Max. About €20k in the difference. I'm looking forward to see the base model ID.4 vs the Exclusive trim top level MG. That will be a close call but I need to drive and feel the base ID.4 to comment.
@@NevoEVReviewIreland the reason I ask is that it gave very good quality video and you got into those little spots with no blur, I am thinking of buying one
I agree - it's a proper review. So many comment on it being noisy - which it isn't! A certain Norwegian reviewer actually took a decibel metre out with home and proved it's a quiet or quieter than other EVs
Glad to see it finally arrive. Good to have more lower cost EVs available. Seems like a good alternative to the Leaf 40. Interestingly the petrol ZS had a facelift announced earlier in the year but nothing yet for the ZS EV. Perhaps next year? Front looks a bit more modern and less Mazda-like, and bigger infotainment but not sure if still glossy. That would definitely bug me.
Thanks for the comment Brian. More choice and bigger boot with higher seating positing will tick a lot of boxes. I'd say the EV version is using up what's left in the parts bin. A facelift will be good and we won't have to wait in the Irish market as long. Glossy does seem to be an issue, I wonder if there's a matt vinyl clear sticker you could apply?
Surprising that nobody seems to understand who makes this car. A state-owned company. The CCP. The 4g modems have been removed for the European market due to surveillance concerns......hence no app.
Thanks for the question John. It the bottom of the right hand dial in the driver cluster as an indicator, not a percentage. Apologies, I didn't clearly point it out in the review. You'll also get the range left in the center display, bottom right hand corner.
Great review. Just wondering where I would find the workaround for three kids car seats? I have two in boosters and a 3 year old in a normal child seat. Trying to find a reasonably priced EV that will fit everyone. Cheers
Thanks for the comment Ros. I'm afraid it's not out there yet. It's a real pity there aren't more that two isofix seat positions in the rear of more EVs. There's obviously the more expensive 7 seaters but out of the budget of most families.
Hi Ros, we done a video on fitting child seats in the MG ZS EV but here in Australia we have 3 iso fix points so different to UK model which I believe Ireland are receiving.
Interested in an EV. but havent owned one before. Need to drive from Clondalkin (dublin) to Dungarvan (waterfard) 3-4 times a year on the M9. Question is how many stops to chargae will i need to do and for how long. keeping in mind it will be mostly motorway driving 216KM is about the distanace i need to drive on this trip.
Thanks for the comment Ste. Depending on the car you go for you may not need to stop at all but stopping once would be my estimate. You'll probably stop for a coffee and a bite to eat along the route anyway.
@@NevoEVReviewIreland Thinking of this MG EZ as the max budget would be 30k. my route is all motorway. can you recommend an app to check for charging points
Absolutely no problem. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iternio.abrpapp and with the MG ZS as the vehicle it's saying one charge along the route.
Thanks for the comment Richard. I think in many ways the LEAF has led the way in EV adoption (people having to get used to a semi adjustable steering wheel 🤣🤣)
Thanks for the question John. Unfortunately I have not tried that. I had the car for a couple of days. Maybe track down an owner in one of the online groups and see if they are will to try your experiment?
Hi @john Yong, camping overnight with AC on for 8 hrs uses approx 14% of battery charge or approx 30 klms of range. Odviosly depends on temperature etc. Worth noting the you can't fully turn the parking lights off so this consumption was included. Next time I intend to unplug them under bonnet so should be slightly better. Enjoy the ZS EV.
A little slow. Maybe edit it down 7 or 8 minutes. Too long a video. Good review though. Car much more expensive then in the UK and that should be highlighted
Thanks for the comment Paul. I appreciate the feedback. Some prefer more detail and others like you prefer it short and concise. It's hard to please everyone. I'll look at breaking the reviews up in future and I hope the chapters were useful. The UK is cheaper but unfortunately we've a different tax system and rates. Some have already brought them in from the UK.
Thanks for the question Ken. I believe updates are via the dealer network and I'm hearing in the UK that some charge for updates and others don't. Let us know what's the situation down there when you find out.
Updates in the UK are done through the dealer. So far the only chargeable one was the Comfort 2 update, which some dealers did FOC for their customers, others charged. In mainland Europe though it was free!
