STANDARD RANGE MODEL 3! - Why Did I Sell My Performance Model 3?

After moving from California to Nashville, I started to regret buying the Performance Model 3... NOT because it is a bad car, but because I wish I would have kept my first LR RWD Model 3 (VIN #89). I wish I would have kept it strictly because of finances and budget. The P3D is an AMAZING car and certainly the best/fastest car you can buy for the money.
But we needed to save money so after talking it over, we decided it was time.
And lucky me, I am still able to drive a Model 3... a STANDARD RANGE Model 3. To me, it is an incredible buy at $35k but you have to go into a showroom or call and order it... it is "off menu" and probably won't be around long.
I plan on doing a more deep dive into the SR Model 3 (Standard Range) in the near future but want some time to drive it to get a good feel for it. I hope you guys enjoy the video!

I have a performance model 3 and sometimes I have regrets because every time my wife is in the car with me (60-70%) she’ll get mad when I go 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. So most of the time I’m driving it slower than a standard model 3. 0-60 in 10 seconds or so. And.... that’s when the regret sets in. Extra ~$400 a month to just restrain my lead foot. =(

Each to their own. I am coming from the opposite perspective. I watched Jason from Engineering explained share all the reasons why he traded in his standard range for a p3. Largely because of the lack of an Induction motor. It's like you are paying for real thing anyway, you might as well get the real thing for only a few tens of thousands more. I will qualify this by saying I am buying with cash for long term and rolling the purchase price in with my mortgage in one year, so I will only have monthly payments of a few hundred dollars more than my mortgage payments for one year until I renegotiate my mortgage and consolidate. Those that are leading, or whom are taking on huge monthly payments more than the base price might not have the freedom to opt this way....but since I did, the only consideration is adding extra time to having a mortgage (never pay it off anyway) and less inheritance for my daughter. Her inheritance will only reduce 10% and she gets to use the car too today as most of trips will be to take her to soccer etc. Lol.

My wife yells at me if I floor my LR RWD model... I had some buyers remorse wishing I waited for the P3D but in all honesty I know I'd rarely use the extra power, in fact it would probably get me in trouble more than anything. But of course, still considering the performance Y ! The SR seems like an amazing deal. I personally need the LR because of frequent long trips a few times a month, I need the extra range or it would cost me a few hours per month, which would wash away savings in my eyes.

@lubricatedgoat

@@marc_benton The scam is: they talked me into buying the SR+ due to the partial premium interior. Turns out the SR never existed. I paid much more, and much more in tax, for the exact same car. @@marc_benton No sir. As it stands, my car is identical to yours. No traffic data or streaming audio. Where I am, it was $5k more, even with autopilot on both the SR and SR+. I picked mine up on Mar 30, to try to help Tesla with Q1. They've said they'll take away heated front seats, disable fog lights and 2 tweeters, then software cap the battery by 10%. None of that makes any practical difference. The sound system, as you know, is not the greatest already and the tweeters make no difference to my ears (A-pillar, top ones). Fog lights? Useless. Heated seats in the front only? Not worth 5k. The range is the same because now you can charge to 100%. The cars are practically, even if they lock out features, identical. I was talked into paying 5k more for the partial premium interior. Anyone who pays 5k less than me got the same thing. I'm happy for you though. Very happy. It's also about the best car in the world, EV or not, so even if I threw money out the window, I'm still glad to be in a Tesla.

@@lubricatedgoat I totally understand. I would not be super happy either if I was you because those features are not all that important to me either, which is the #1 reason I jumped on the deal. You could make this car look exactly like the P3 with the modifications you did; chrome delete, change the wheels, lowering springs, painted badges etc; who would know whether its a performance or standard with all those changes?
@marc_benton
@marc_benton 5 лет назад
Well, people that know Tesla's and/or Model 3's would/could know the difference. I've already modded the car some (see some more recent videos) but I am not trying to make it look like a P3D. I just want it to look how I want it to look. There was a small run of P3D's that have Aero Wheels (they don't have the performance upgrades like the 20" wheels or larger, red brake calipers) but most of them do have those things. But you can't just go by "having red brake calipers" either because many people have painted their Brembo's red because they like that look and they've put 20" wheels on them. So sometimes it is really hard to tell. I've had many people ask me if my SR is a Performance Model, just based on how it looks. I tell them "No, its not... I already had one of those and while they are amazing, this is not one". Lol But I am not trying to make it look like a P3D, I just want it to look line MINE. :)

well, right now a lot of that is still up in the air. As of now, I do have heated seats and I was told they would be turned off (along with the range reduction) but until it happens, I am not sure. They did say that I could add AP for $3k later if I wanted to but they didn't say anything about being able to turn the other SR+ features on. The Tesla employee doesn't know what he's talking about (unfortunately, par for the course most of the time). All Standard Range cars have the same interior as the Standard Plus. It does have the power seats and the user memory function. They just software lock the battery and take away things like heated seats, streaming audio and traffic visualization on nav. Other than that, its exactly like a SR+ car. I don't think Tesla will ever offer the SR with cloth seats... but you never know.
@dturtle7893
@dturtle7893 5 лет назад
Marc Benton thanks. Does the NAV on your SR still calculate best/fastest route based on traffic conditions, but just not show the red, green, yellow traffic lines on the map? I know the SR+ still does that because I confirmed it by plotting the same destination on the SR+ NAV and on google maps on my phone at the same time. They both plotted the same route to drive, its just that it showed traffic colors on my phone and not on the car’s NAV. Can you confirm if your SR’s NAV does that too?

No, no word on what the cost would be to move to the SR+ after delivery. It was $4500 to move up before. My guess is they will offer discounts to move up eventually. So true, I replaced the standard floor mats with all-weather ones immediately so they're now in a box in the garage, also use wall connector, and frunk is full of emergency stuff so lack of a mat wouldn't bother me. Does it have the HomeLink garage door opener? If so, is it GPS location enabled? What about memory driver profile settings? Cool thing about the SR is it has the bigger battery pack, so (a) you could potentially charge to a higher SOC on a regular basis and not worry about "degradation" (whatever level you feel comfortable with), and (b) I believe they'll sell an unlock upgrade later for longer range. What would be interesting for Tesla is if they allow you to temporarily "unlock" a week at a time, just for when you're going on long trips. Link to your credit card and offer it seamlessly if you decide to drive on a long trip. Sort of like checking out a digital movie, etc. Also does it have the other cool stuff like Sentry Mode and Dashcam?

@imho7250 5 лет назад
Marc Benton, the website is onlyusedtesla, not onlyusedteslas, which redirects to some hosting service. I’m also wondering exactly what the math is for this transaction, because it would seem depreciation would have eaten up most of the financial gain of down grading. Of course you were able to deduct $7500 of that depreciation from last year’s taxes, but that car had to cost more than $7500 more than the amount you sold it for, after including delivery, sales tax, etc. How much did the insurance decrease when you told your insurance you downgraded from a $60k car to a $37k car? Or was the insurance on the P3D “pleasure use only”, or some special category used to get affordable rates? I have done essentially the same thing as you, selling my 6 month old 1989 Mustang GT convertible to get out from under the car payment, but I bought a used car with cash after that, not another new mustang with a 4 cylinder. In fact I bought a new 1988 5.0 lx for $13,500 and traded in fir the $18,500 GT a year later, back when money grew on trees. Lol I honestly think there are a lot of people who are waking up 3-6 months later regretting spending so much on a car. I absolutely loved my GT convertible, except for the payment and insurance. As more people get the letter from the insurance company saying the P3D insurance rates are going up, they also may realize 3.2 seconds is much quicker than they need to go, if they need to be insured.
@marc_benton
@marc_benton 5 лет назад
@@imho7250 My bad, I can't tell you how many times I have typed that website wrong. Lol The numbers for me are very mixed because of the amount I paid for the car, how much I've paid it down and how much I've put into it (via mods). So my case is certainly not the norm. The bottom line is that my new SR cost half of what the P3D did and I am able to pay it off very quickly, which I could not have done with the P3D. Also, I have a call into my insurance agent so I don't have that info but I can tell you this. My insurance did not go UP when I sold my LR RWD Model 3 and went to the Performance. So, I have a feeling it won't go down either. AAA seems to look at all Model 3's the same... no matter the model.

Marc Benton, the model 3 is pretty new so insurance companies might still be learning. But certainly with a $35k 5.6 sec version and a $70k 3.2 second version, they cost different amounts to insure. Yep! They were great to deal with and I love have a Service Center so close to me. When we were in Cali, the closet one was 160 miles away.

@@marc_benton I know what you mean. I live in Knoxville 180 miles. Ranger came out and changed my 12 volt battery and charge port. Saved me 6 or 8 hours drive. Good luck. I bought a 2016 model s 90d. I love it. I have put 5000 miles on it.

Man your performance was nice! I just traded my RWD long range for performance, I love having the crazy speed and acceleration.

Is the battery life the same?
@marc_benton
@marc_benton 5 лет назад
@@jorgealvarez1558 Hard question to answer but I would guess the life of the batter on a SR would be better than the Performance. I could be wrong but it only makes sense to me because with a Performance, you are pushing the motors more (hard accelerations). I guess in all, it really depends on driving habits. I believe either will last a LONG time though.

@@jorgealvarez1558 More batteries = more life VS standard range. I hope Elons statement of at least 80% in 300K-500K miles on battery pack as well as $7000 battery replacement. RWD long range I bet will get more life but half the fun!

I bet those seats have heat grids. Disabled. I have used my TMC once in 13k.

Ted Kidd I have no doubt the seats have heat grids...both the fronts and back, with the tears disabled.

Ted Kidd yep! Pretty smart of them IMO. I’m not sure on the battery size.

Can you tell how’s the standard sound audio? Sounds good or the premium audio it’s better?
@marc_benton
@marc_benton 5 лет назад
To me, it sounds good. It's not as high quality, thats for sure because its missing the sub. But it still sounds very good. I don't think most will notice the difference unless you tell them. It lacks a little low end in certain areas but not a deal breaker to me. The premium audio is better but whether its worth it to upgrade is a different story.

@marc_benton

Jorge Amoranza well, as of now it has immersive sounds but I believe that will be eventually taken away via an update. The SR is not supposed to have that.

@@metoo3918 I have another video on my channel that compares Vin 89 to a newer 77*** Vin. Not much has changed visibly since so it's pretty accurate as of now. My new SR Model 3 is a Vin in the 310*** and nothing has changed that I can see from my Vin that was in the 77***. But a lot changed in those first ~100 to 14*** Vins.
