WOW!!!!! How cool is it that a high school band play the theme to STARBLAZERS (a.k.a. Space Battleship Yamato). Applause to everyone involved in this magnificent performance!!
ok surreal moments : that moment when a high school band teacher has their band play an ancient anime theme song to a series few ever heard of and it makes you get teary-eyed.
One of the best scores done by a high school band! You should be very proud of yourselves and this is why music is important in school! Also a EXCELLENT salute to the best animated series, EVER!!!!!!
Hearing great themes from a live orchestra is one of the greatest experiences. THe Star Blazers/Yamato theme is as good as any John Williams score. Great performance! GO WASHINGTON!!!
This was cool and being 36 now, I used to run home from elementary school to catch this show at 3:00 p.m. It is kinda funny to see the students faces at the end. They have a look like they don't have a clue what they just played. It was great!
Wish we could hear THAT version as well. I think they should have taken your Coral group and sang the theme song, That would have brought the audience to their feet. Great Job.
@bsgfan1 Actually, the accent on the first syllable (YA-ma-to) is the correct Japanese pronunciation. Watch any of the Space Battleship Yamato clips here on RU-vid (the subtitled ones, not the dubbed-into-English ones) and you'll hear the original Japanese voice actors using this pronunciation.
I no longer have the sheet music unfortunately, otherwise I would gladly share. I originally got the music from a friend who visited Japan. My friend passed away 10+ years ago and not sure where you get the sheet music. Good luck.
@tgarnett25 as in like singers? I don't think so, the band teacher himself, I don't think he was actually very acquainted with the show so we never talked about getting a chorus to sing with us, but that would have been epic^^
@8UP1977 haha that would have been cool, but I don't think wer'e playing it again anytime soon which kinda sucks.. at least not while I'm at that school =P but it was still epic X3
This came on in several markets across the US in 1979, playing at 6am. I was in high school at the time and I got up to see it throughout their run in Chicago.
We're off to outer space We're leaving mother Earth To save, the human race Our Star Blazers Searching for a distant star Heading off to Iscandar Leaving all we love behind Who knows what dangers we'll find We must be strong and brave Our home we have to save If we don't in just one year Mother Earth will disappear Fighting with the Gamalons We won't stop until we've won Then we'll return and when we arrive The Earth will survive with our Star Blazers
Farewell, Earth, the ship that is departing is The Space Battleship Yamato It departs now to Iskandar, at the end of the cosmos, bearing its fate. "We will come back, no matter what it takes" Answer with a smile to the waving people Going far from the Galaxy towards Iskandar A faint gleam of hope The Space Battleship Yamato!
Great arrangement of this classic march. Uchuu Senkan Yamato (Star Blazers in US) is one of the most famous animes ever. The memory of that show and its movies stay with me to this day. The show embodied the pride of the Japanese people and two of the seven movies from it were the top selling movies in Japan for years. The lyrics to the song are also great btw... :) Thanks for posting this sweet performance.
I have to say that this is the first time I ever heard a high school ensemble performing a classic anime opening song, much less one of my favorites! Uchū Senkan Yamato (Star Blazers) was always a go-to staple of late 70s afterschool cartoons.
This is a song that has stuck in my head since I saw it as a kid in 1978 The thing that drew me and my friends into Star Blazers was the intellectual content that Disney and Warner bros never provided
It was certainly not your average early morning cartoon. It was dramatic and intense. Even if I didn't have school the next day, I would be up at 7am to watch the show without fail. There was no VCR's & no TiVo. You had to catch it when you could. Now I have the entire set. And seeing this wonderful performance just proves that it still lives. Brilliant idea by Don Gaiser!! and a fantastic performance from The Port Angeles, WA. High School Mondo-Band.
Wow! Even though I had to turn the volume up a bit, this is MAGNIFICENT! Now let's get all the Yamato/Star Blazers Symphonic Suites on the State Band Contest required music list! I would love to hear the Comet-Empire Theme next as well as the slow yamato theme next! :) This is a Giant Leap for a Symphonic Band! Thanks for posting this, Don! Great job!
I'd also like to submit my application for citizenship...but only if you promise to put the Yamato/Argo as the cover of our passports! Did these kids kick some butt or what? I got goose bumps listening to this. Can't wait for the next eps from Star Blazers 2199!
This was AWSOME! I remember the cartoon and own some of the DVD's. The music from Yamato is great but hearing it with a full orchestra is even better! These kids did an excellent job!
You kids did an outstanding job! You have no idea what that show meant to us as kids when it came out in 1979; there was nothing else like it at the time and those of us who fell in love with it then still love it now.. Everytime I hear that theme song,I get goosebumps... WELL DONE!
@daiatlas2010 - The real Yamato is at the bottom of the South China Sea, sunk on April 7, 1945 after at least 11 American torpedoes and 8 bombs (maybe even 2 more torpedoes - unconfirmed) struck the largest battleship ever floated. Personally, I knew the starship as the Argo, and the name evokes the classic tale of Jason and the Argonauts. Well-done by the band, as some here have correctly stated, most of those band members weren't even born yet when the show was popular.
That's so freakin' awesome. I live in Washington, not far from Port Angeles. Had I but known, I would have driven all the way there to hear this live. It makes me laugh until I can't even breathe that somebody took the time to recreate this, and the funniest part is that they did an awesome job. Brilliant. Fantastic! The "funny" to me is that I loved this show as a kid, and that somebody else loved it enough to do this. That's great. I must tell everyone I know immediately! Great work!
Very well done on a most impressive theme score. I watched the cartoon (now called anime) Star Blazers religiously every morning before school. Most my friends did as well as their parents! It became nearly a cult following. It great to hear it played again. Only thing missing from this was someone singing the words. They rallied hope against all odds. In troubling real life times, we could use a good rally call to unit and do some good for all man kind. Great job!
If the do a re-make.... Please don't let them slaughter it like so many other re-makes. I will always love the classic Starblazers!! And yes....for a HS band they are doing pretty dang good!!
Does any body else see Deslock in the mind. And she tattle shape firing her 18 intch cannons. Now turned into lazzer cannons.Brings so many good memories.
