Jar Jar Abrams is clearly good at rehashing. Stuff we didn't exactly want, but definitely needed, for both franchises. Let's just be glad he's not writing Episode XIII. (Yes, I loved Beyond.)

I agree. Loved the incorporation of classic Star Trek and the best parts of the reboot. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but it's great to see morality and a message of unity infused with spectacular action sequences. Justin Lin is far better at actually utilizing the enterprise as a family and team than JJ Abrams (who still seems to have trouble doing this with Force Awakens, even with far less characters). And also, one thing, who else thinks Spock and Captain Kirk have astronomically improved? They feel far more like the classic characters, while still making it their own. And yes, "Sabotage" was used extremely well which shocked me.

Star Trek Beyond definitely was an enjoyable movie. Probably the best of the reboot. I didn't mind the other two but I'll admit while I don't hate Into Darkness, that movie does have problems in the last quarter of the film. It didn't need to have Khan as Khan, they should have kept the character as John Harrison. Not really Orci and Kurtzman at their best sadly but thankfully not their worst. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung however do a far better at giving consistent quality of writing with Star Trek Beyond. Additionally, there are ways Into Darkness could have been fixed to make it a better movie. PS. The Voyage Home is my favourite Star Trek. So funny and sweet.

I agree with you about the Generation films. I went to see ST 2009 full of hope, and was crushed when it ended. I hated it. I hated it so much, I have yet to see Into Darkness. However, I did see ST: Beyond..... I loved it!!! This was the ST I have loved since I was a kid (and I was born in 1962). The movie got everyhting right about ST.

Hey Sam, I've been wondering, completely unrelated to the video, but: Have you been to film school? I've also been wondering how that would be, and what you learn. Thank you as always.

My aunt, uncle and I saw the 2009 film and liked it, but I'm no fan of Star Trek like she was. She was the biggest fan of the series I've ever known. Sadly, she didn't get to see the second or this one, rest her soul.

Thank God Abrams isn't in the directing chair for Episode VIII. I don't hate him but it's clear he just doesn't have much interest in crafting new stories from old series. Now if Disney could just take Trevorrow off of IX.

I really don't think "the next generation" movies were that bad. I rather enjoyed them. Just as I enjoyed Into Darkness. I'm just glad that all three of those new movies turned out that good. Especially the third one. You can tell that they care about Star Trek. People really need to stop the hate and realize those movies could've turned out waaaay worse. PS I actually enjoyed all three of these more than the new Star Wars.

IMO, this is a better version of Star Trek IV than the actual Star Trek 4. The whole "save the whales" thing was a bit too ham-fisted for my liking in IV.

I would suggest to try and catch it at a discount theater, since they usually carry movies later than regular theaters. it's so good and I think watching in the big screen is worth is worth it! Hope you get to experience it!

This movie proved my point about the entire reboot: there were essentially three problems which this one got rid of: Abrams, an unoriginal recipe-driven producer who never liked Star Trek because he couldn't understand it (his own words) and uses lense flares as artistic pretense; Orci and Kurtzman, lazy, uninspired screenwriters who have no knowledge of Star Trek, science, character build-up and plotting whatsoever beyond the bad comic book level (and that's insulting to comic books right there). This movie has the merit of not insulting our intelligence as the first asinine one did and is not a badly made rip-off like the second. It shows that, once you get rid of these three Un-Trekkers, you can have something that honestly manage to ressemble something called Star Trek. Not quite there yet but certainly boldly going where none of the two previous ones had gone before.

I only felt there was one thing wrong with the movie over all and it was the villain. The villain talks of how uniting and being together is a weakness but his entire base of attack is to have thousands of ships work TOGETHER to take down their enemies.

To be fair to Krall, the swarm had essentially one mind. He was sending him a signal and all his mooks (who are basically drones) followed it.

I thought Star Trek Beyond was very average. Some of the positives you mention like Kirk's character I agree with you but I ended up having more problems with it. It felt so standard to me with the Enterprise being blown up, bad guy needs something which in my opinion he didn't even really need when those ships he had could have done the job instead as well as his motivation being kind of typical and underdeveloped and Jaylah's character being the typical native who doesn't quite understand someone else's culture and just not being that interesting of a character to me. Strangely I kept seeing similarities with some Voyager episodes the crew losing their ship and being stranded on an alien planet ("Basics"), the ship gets attacked by an alien swarm of ships ("The Swarm"), alien who is also stranded on the planet helps them out and eventually leaves the planet with them ("Gravity") and I think they even referenced "Tuvix" in Scotty's dialogue at one point in regards to the transporter and being fused together into one person. That's also another thing there was maybe a bit too much referencing going on and some of it was maybe a bit forced. The beasties boys scene didn't work for me as I felt it was too silly, cheesy and kind of a lazy resolution even if they tried to give a good reason for it and I cringed at seeing Chekov and Sulu doing a little dance to it. You say it was like a bit of British comedy but I'm not sure something like Red Dwarf would even have done that plus it's not that inventive if it's already been done twenty years ago in "Mars Attacks" and I didn't like it there either. So for me it was a pretty meh experience as it overall felt too familiar to things I've seen before either in trek or in other things I've seen.

You speak of how bad TNG movies are, but at the same time there were DS9 series and even Enterprise, which had a lot of similar aspects with Abrams' Trek, but still was infinitely better and more thought-provoking (Yes, I'm aware that first two seasons suck, don't point that to me. I take S3-S4 of ENT over any Abrams movie any day). I personally didn't like a single Star Trek movie, aside from Wrath of Khan and think that people still don't really figured out how to transit Trek to the big screen right. DS9 finale was for me "that Star Trek movie" I've always wanted to see.

I had a bicycle accident literally the day after the Dawn of Justice review was released and broke a few bones. It's a slow recovery which I'm still not quite over just yet but I am finally fit enough to be catching up on films and putting out content. +Marcelo Zuniga Why the fuck you lying, fam. To quote his FB post, "Literally everything about 'Suicide Squad' is a huge fucking mess, from story to characters to plotting to editing, but the fact it comes out the other side still reasonably entertaining puts it leagues ahead Man of Steel or Batman V Superman. That doesn't make it good, but I didn't hate it. And when it comes to this particular franchise, that feels good."

I enjoyed the movie up to a point then I didn't - it is a reason that likely wouldn't have even cross most viewers minds - but there was some vague sense of internal consistency in the TV - even in the clusterf**k that is Voyager. So if you see someone who look threatening and they are far off - then fine call for enhanced view - but if they are on top of you PUT THE DAMN SHIELDS UP.., and change course.. don't sit there like a huge sitting duck and get attacked. Also what is it with these Movies and the utter ineffectiveness of shields - even if they'd made a couple of passes and the ship had been moving away before they got through it still would have been "exciting" this isn't Star Wars where they have particle shielding and ray shielding as separate things - this is Star Trek a universe where physical objects or energy weapons can only pass through shields if their own shields or weapons frequencies are exactly matching the frequency of the shields they intersect with - you know that very thing that was what got the Enterprise D destroyed by matching shields! The way Kirk just stands there with his thumb up his backside while all but 28 of his crew dies (eventually) out of a supposed crew of near 1000 - is as daft as when he get lauded at the end of ST 2009 for being an ass then too. That simple moment made me well angry i'd i'm honest even a useless Captain like Star Trek III's Captain Stiles would have handled that better. So no I wasn't especially feel it - maybe i'll rewatch it when i'm in a more forgiving mode. But basically much eyerolling ensued for me.

Unless your are a junkie of ST; I don't recommend this movie. Don't waste your time or money. First it is way too predictable & super boring, recycled same o' and simplistic. It was a recycle old movie but worst. This was a kiddie movie and the dumbest dullest plot. A complete piece of trash of a movie. A waste of my time & money. Very bad experience. I almost left the theater because it was sucking so bad. The technology & gadgetry laughable & falling way back and the science is so ridiculous it kills the movie too. It is Time to stop making ridiculous old time movies about franchises that need to be let die! what the public needs is a new franchise all together. About sci fy space. Not star wars not star trek. THIS GUY IS SURELY PRAISING THIS MOVIE BECAUSE HE GOT PAID TO PRAISE IT . But it is no good. Take it from me it is not worth your money or time. A junk of a movie just to exploit franchise and it's followers to make money. 'Beyond' because it is beyond bad! You have been warned!
