I have to preface this with "I've seen nothing other than the pilot episode", but he seemed like a horrible character. A Captain who isn't giving orders then berates his crew for not...opening fire on other ships without being given an order to? Now, in theory, a Captain could have standing orders of "shoot enemy ships on sight" or something, but generally in IRL navies (and from what we've seen of Trek ones), firing before being given the order to fire is a no-no. So berating the weapons officer for not firing when YOU HAVE NOT GIVEN HIM THE ORDER TO FIRE is nonsense. He also seemed to demand instant reports on things right after giving an order but before anything has had time to happen. Like when he asks the operations officer "Got anything?" then, before she could even open her mouth to reply, says her name again, demanding something when he literally didn't give her a chance to even open her mouth and reply to his initial question. His "UNDERSTOOD?!" seemed unnecessary. That said, there ARE jerk COs out there that are like that, so I'm more willing to let that slide. But the whole "I CAN'T HEEE-AAARRR YOUUUUU" nonsense is toxic leadership at the best of times...and this show isn't the best of times. Same with the "DID WE GET 'EM BOTH?!?!" before giving his officer a chance to respond to "DID WE GET BOTH TORPEDOES?" . I've heard this show is a dumpster fire, and this battle seems to support that view. I'm also curious what math genius thought going from 100% -> 70% -> 30% -> 10% shields made sense. Moreover, 30% -> 10% taking a single torpedo hit means if they HAD taken both torpedoes, they might have been destroyed...

Lets put aside Lorca's larger agenda for a moment and try to compare the Terran empire with the Roman empire for the sake of argument ( Terrans were modelled after Romans - just read the Emperors name ). Roman empire was utterly corrupt, decadent and at one point sitting on the throne was more dangerous than being a soldier in a pitched battle. The Senate and patrician families often stabbed each other in the back, plotted and schemed just as how the Terrans are depicted to us in Star Trek. But we also know that the Centurions were extremely loyal to their men ( Centurion commands a century of a 100 men, pretty much like a Captain commands a ship of similar crew compliment ) and they *RARELY had grand ideas of ascending to the throne, backstabbed their peers or plotted against the emperor. ( Generals usually fell to this ambition and most of them were ... patrician ). The way Trek portrays Terrans we are lead to believe that every single citizen of billions has the same ambition of rising to the throne based on a handful of ambitious characters we see on screen. Characters that belong in the upper echelon of Terran society, in some way close to the emperor or are just overly ambitious captains ( who more often than not end up dead as a result of their ambition ). It is not hard for me to imagine middle/low class Terrans operating in a way Lorca operated in these scenes.

I’m sure that would be the reaction of ANY navy CO - hell ANY navy personnel PERIOD. Ships are not cheap to replace, crew even more so as you have to train them, get the raw materials to make the hull, etc. and said crew is hard to find in the first place. I can only imagine how daunting a task it was for the founders of the US navy in the 1700’s when we had just gotten independence and was being targeted by the Barbary corsairs. To be a navy CO and witnessing your allies go up in a fireball is tough enough, as they are your allies in the fight. To witness it as a normal crew member may be tougher as you may have had friends on that ship that was just lost.

Fun fact. The Discovery (Crossfield) is less Combat Oriented than the Gagarin (Shepard Class). But Discovery and the Glenn had the Spore Drive making them "State of the Art" Its definitely newer and more advanced than the Walker and Shepard Class. The Crossfield Class was designed as a Science vessel and was largely impractical for long term combat (Just target the Support Beams connecting to the Daedalus Sphere Bridge) Or Fire at the Shuttlebay (The Force Field will eventually fail and 1 Photon Torpedo in there is an instant kill). The Crossfield is however the perfect ship for hit and run attacks and potential covert operations when it has the Spore Drive. If the USS Enterprise (Constitution Class, Which might not be the same one we all know and love) had the Spore Drive it would be a Super Power all in itself. It would take at least 3 Crossfield Ships to take on Pike's Enterprise (Assuming that Pike's Enterprise is indeed the same one we know from the Prime Universe)

If I were a fan i'd probably make up some bullshit line, like the Anti-Matter cancellation from the shields distorts space/time around it enough to create mico-gravitational waves at a certain frequency. These waves will vibrate your very atoms, as they all jiggle in a wave motion from that frequency. This can be detected by your ears, not just the ear drum but the hair cells themselves will vibrate in a specific fashion during this bombardment of gravitational waves making you interpret it as whatever frequency that gravitational wave was at, for example if you stood beside a black hole merger right at the end you would hear that "bbbwwwwOOOOOOP!" from gravitational waves alone. So this creates a phenomenon where people, regardless where they are (inside the ship, in another ship, outside the ship) they will hear this quick "beeepup" or other variations depending on shape/size of the projectile. But i'm not a fan, nor do i know anything about this show specifically so i'm going to say it was a poor attempt at a "futuristic" audio noise resulting from "futuristic" weaponry that we don't "understand".

@SubduedRadical
@SubduedRadical 2 года назад
@@jeremypace249 I'm not sure he's acting QUITE like a real American military officer. Granted, during my time in the Navy, we never saw live combat, so the situation might be different if we did, but our Captains generally didn't act quite like that. My main issues with him in this scene are: (a) he snarks about his weapon officer not firing when, irl, if a Captain/Officer of the Deck (who has to get the Captain's permission, generally) fires weapons without a DIRECT ORDER from the CO/OOD, that's bad. The CO has weapons release authority - and also is responsible if the ship blows up a noncombatant or the like - so while a CO COULD include weapon release in the Captain's Standing Orders, in practice, I don't think any do... (b) He makes a request/asks a question, but doesn't give his people a chance to respond before yelling at them...but then only yells at them ONCE (instead of over and over until they shout an answer over him). Generally, when you ask a question, you give the other person a chance to respond that is longer than 0.5sec before you ask again more angrily and more demanding. He does this at least twice in this scene/battle. (c) The whole "UNDERSTOOD?!" thing. While "I CAN'T HEEEE-AAAAR YOU!" thing is often done in indoctrination/boot camp/officer candidate school, it's not generally done on an active warship. Especially in a combat or critical situation. It's also kind of weird because if you expect everyone to say "aye sir", they'd be yelling over each other. When orders are given, they're generally given to ONE person to do a thing, not to everyone at once. This allows the ONE person to give a full repeat-back of the order, word for word (or very nearly) showing that they understood the full order, and did it correctly, getting all the important details right. Giving a kind of generic order like "key your trigger finger ready" isn't even something that applies to the entire crew anyway. It could be seen more as an order to the weapons officer, yet the CO here didn't specify his command with something like "WEPS...do X", which is what makes a good command. In the US Navy, CLARITY of understanding an order is considered highly important. . That said, I had some demanding CO's (and non-CO superiors) in my time, and some can be snappy like that. But I've never met one to this level, and I met a good deal of other officers (and was one, albeit a JO). So I can safely say that "real American military officers" do not, GENERALLY, behave like he did, or not to the level he did, anyway. In general, we understand that our people know their jobs and not to overtly micromanage because it kills efficiency. And if we ARE going to micromanage, do it in clear, concise orders where it is also clear to whom, specifically, the order is given, and giving time for a proper response.

People forget that Lorca was an experienced combat commander; much more so than his crew! Saru would have understood exactly what he was doing; so would Burnham! That's combat experience you usually get the hard way, unfortunately! The good officers use their skills, knowledge, and Star Fleet tactics to their advantage; bad officers DON'T.

Scenes like this - where Lorca was an absolute badass, and prepared to place his own ship in the line of fire to protect an ally - made me love his character, and made the revelation that he was some evil mirror universe cartoon villain feel so unbelievable. The Federation was at war, and it needed warriors in command of its fleet - Lorca was exactly that. The mirror universe twist always felt to me like a panic-move by the show's writers when all the fans who wanted this show to be exactly like old 'Star Trek' started whining about him being too mean, or whatever. I really wish they'd stuck to their guns, because 'Discovery' has never been more exciting and interesting than it was in its first season. Also, 'Black Alert!' and the spore drive - has there ever been a cooler ship in 'Star Trek' history? And those jackasses have now basically erased this awesome secret weapon and its technology from the Trek timeline??? What a stupid, stupid move that was.

Except how would you explain where a ship like discovery was in TOS and why more ships don’t have spore drives? The only problem is getting around the organic navigator issue and then all the ships could have such a drive.
@adambrown6669
@adambrown6669 11 месяцев назад
Technically the drive is back in the 32nd century, it just couldn't exist during the rest of the 22nd century and onwards through to the 25th and so on. Series like Voyager would never work, and the federation would have had an insane tactical advantage over the dominion, making that war less of a struggle, imagine a defiant class that could both cloak and teleport around a battlefield? That would be deadly enough to sow discourse even among the allied factions like Klingons and Romulans, Nemesis would have had the entire backup fleet just jump in beside the enterprise, making a legendary duel just a mid length skirmish and so on for various other moments. The tech could not exist not only for the sake of future stories but because it just wouldn't sit right with other powers to have that risk of a starship able to drop out anywhere, fire a salvo of torpedoes and then jump away without a trace. As for the ship class, Glenn and Discovery where the last two of the class still in service, only active because of the need for their research, other better science vessels and multi role vessels like the Miranda, Centaur, oberth etc would be starting to take the center stage from the ships of the era in-between archer and pike.

Judging by the size of the Explosions. The Phasers are Definitely sub-kiloton whereas the Photon Torpedoes are in the one digit Kiloton Range (Heat Wise the Damage may be much higher and the energy may be diverted to the point of impact for maximum Shield/Hull penetration). This is in line with what we see in the Battle of Corvan II. And the Gagarin's Explosion is likely to be the Impulse Deuterium Engines Exploding (As the Warp Engines were down they wouldn't be the cause of the Explosion) And would be in the High Megaton Range (Appears to be 26 Megatons). In Star Trek the main engines are very fragile. With anything as simple as looking at the Warp Core the wrong way is enough to cause a problem that might blow up the ship. In combat it would take hours for Phasers and Torpedoes to actually destroy the structure of Starships (Which is why they specifically target the Warp or Impulse Engines) Buckling the Engines in any way could cause a massive internal explosion that would Destroy the ship entirely. We also see that the Discovery's Shields are much weaker than the Gagarin's as 3 to 4 Torpedoes were enough to bring the DSC Shields down to 10%. The Gagarin had been taking ALOT before this video even started and it had only then just started to lose Shields (And Explode). And if the Gagarin had just started fighting when the video started then the Shields would be similar in strength to Discovery. The Battlestar Galactica (New Series) Should be able to Fight an entire Klingon Fleet at this rate.

Yea but Star Trek: Enterprise was garbage as well. The "best" by what many sites rank is Star Trek: The Next Generation, it was very professional, clean, neat, etc. Not like this. Todays version of star trek was skewed to try and soak in a larger crowd of people, it became more "woke" making every individual a weird thing, including homosexual behaviours as well just to really "trend" with todays youth. It includes snarky behaviour, comments and remarks making the crew rather unprofessional but that, again, is trending with todays generation. It includes crazy FX's, battles, weird new jump drives that give the show reasons for more FX - because why not. I love the FX, don't get me wrong but I can't stand the lackluster stories and inappropriate behaviour of the crew. They're supposed to be the best of the best, meanwhile some act like school children who have no respect for authority - the entire basis of their careers.

I think that's because the ahip designers didn't have much time or they just were lazy and decided to rotate the shenzou and call it a new ship class. I think this scene is pretty amazing but I have one issue with it, howcome the Klingons ignore the Discovery for alot of the battle like the Gagarin is the prize they seek and need to destroy. @sergeantassassin3425
@sergeantassassin3425 5 лет назад
A year late, but here we go: the Klingons don't know if other ships are en-route to assist the Gagarin like Discovery was. They are rather practical in the sense that, if you have an enemy who's significantly outflanked, outgunned, and outnumbered, you take full advantage of that and beat them until they're down for good. The Gagarin was already heavily damaged before Discovery arrived. Diverting their attention to the fresh ship would give the damaged one time to possibly repair their warp drive and allow them to flee, thus denying them a kill. Discovery soaked up a LOT of damage trying to keep the Gagarin alive: they were in the fight for maybe 5 minutes, and their shields went from full to 10%. Obviously the Klingons were trying to finish the Gagarin off as fast as possible so they could then turn their entire focus onto this new ship, but Discovery kept getting in the way and taking blows meant for the Gagarin. It's a sound strategy that they employed: focus fire on the weakest ship, destroy it, then focus fire on the next target. Having 6 vessels hammer on one poor soul is going to destroy it a lot faster than if they split up and chose separate targets.

I've been a Trek fan since the beginning, and have watched every episode of every series. There are, of course, legitimate criticisms to be made of Discovery. But for those who came here just to spew hate on a show you've barely watched, think about which is more antithetical to the spirit of Star Trek: (1) cannon and continuity errors, along with creative choices that don't always pan out, or (2) the firm conviction that your way is the only right way, and differing approaches should be viewed with contempt. The Great Bird of the Galaxy would shrug sheepishly at the first, but be horrified at the second.

I think it’s much more than cannon and continuity errors. I hold out great hope for Season 2 of Discovery because it looks like it’s getting back to the roots of Trek. Season 1 part 1 (the Klingon war) had a lot of problems - some are the cannon / continuity as mentioned, but others are serious fundamental issues with the story and portrayal of the era. However, I think the part 1 could have been salvaged had it not been for Season 1 part 2 (the mirror universe). S1P2 was just insanely bad with NO redeeming qualities. I would point out that, while there will always be people who have issues with canon and continuity, there wouldn’t be nearly as much (or it wouldn’t be nearly as big of a deal) if it was a good story and well written. For large parts of the show, the only reason you knew it was Star Trek is because of the emblem on their uniform - otherwise it was a sci-fi show dressed up as trek. Having said that, I truly hope the outcry from the fans has changed the show for the better, into something more recognizable as Trek - and from the looks of the trailer for Season 2, I think it has.
