@SeatBill
@SeatBill 5 лет назад
Not really. It's DISTINCTIVE, because it has the only working spore drive in existence. Other than that, with its' standard warp drive....it's just another science vessel. Remember - it wasn't designed to be a deep space exploration ship like Enterprise; it doesn't have the crew complement, hull structure, or weapons complement to match a heavy cruiser like Enterprise. What you do with ships like Discovery is put a mostly scientist crew aboard her, and use it as a test bed for new technologies while it checks out new phenomena. By no means is it a "really powerful ship" - if you take the spore drive technology out of it, it would have long since been destroyed. Lt. Stamets is using the ship to perfect the spore drive technology; once he's done that, THEN it would be duplicated aboard other Starfleet vessels....since the spore drive allows the ship to cover much longer distances than regular warp drive does.

This was the episode that did it for me. This is what got me to go and watch Disco. I totally understand why people dump on this show. It was never bad. Production values were movie quality. Most of the acting was pretty darn good... but the writing? OMG. They really kept changing up what they were doing so much I got whiplash. DS9 broke tradition, stuck with it, and is heralded as great television. TNG had a show-of-the-week approach (fine for that era) but managed to serialize enough to where a total rewatch (seasons 2-end because #1 was just...no). Enterprise was quite impressive as it mostly depicted what had been hinted at throughout all the series. Voyager was....passable. But Disco's writing was exceptionally inconsistent...like there was no real vision.

Oh right. It was better when every alien was humanoid with shit on their faces.
@felix25ize
@felix25ize 6 лет назад
+ PetersaberHD: Well just choose. To design an alien, several solutions: a) taking elements of inferior animals, such as tentacles or antennas, and mix it with a normal human in a grotesque way. b ) Deforming a normal human , changing the proportions , the size, the number or the colour of the normal organs for example by removing or adding members , themselves deformed or not ( seven fingers, three or four parts of arm or leg, etc...)or appendices ( most generally cancer-like) . c) using all or part of those processes together. Films authors are unable to conceive a real intelligent alien beeing , just try to create a new one by mixing monstrously and in a non viable disorder the elements of living earth men or animals (sometimes vegetals also ) since the only example of healthy and living intelligent creature is the man. And it is much probable that if aliens exist, they are fewly diferrent from us.
@PetersaberHD
@PetersaberHD 6 лет назад
Well, this alien happens to be designed based on a real micro-animal which happens to be capable of surviving in vacuum.
@felix25ize
@felix25ize 6 лет назад
This time, a normal but unknown of most of the public microscopic animal, but made giant ; which makes of it a monster like all the others issued from the imagination of authors. Just try to design an angel-like alien, instead of a more or less strange and terrifying monster from hell; much more difficult, and never seen at this time, except maybe in the picturres of ancient artists, who did not think to paint an alien...

People hate this show because it's an absolute betrayal to the franchise. Klingons aren't supposed to be able to cloak yet, Kirk is surprised they can in TOS, and this show is supposed be about 10 years prior. The design for the Klingons make absolutely no sense considering where that design is supposed to lead in 10 years time. this "Spore Drive" isn't even slightly mentioned or acknowledged in any other series, despite the fact that Enterprise is the only series that takes place beforehand. Starfleet is astoundingly inept, the Klingons spout bad anime villain cliches, and the list goes on for miles. in an interview, they said that they wanted it to be an alternate universe. fine. but for some incredibly dumb reason, that got scrapped and kept it prime universe BUT KEPT THE CHANGES. They are ACTUALLY that careless and dumb. What made Star Trek so great was the fact that it wasn't all about fighting and warfare and shit like that. it's about the journey and the adventures of the crew through space unknown and situations unknown. you had to think about what was happening, you had to pay attention. This show, meanwhile, has complete ADHD with the Discovery doing kung fu flips all over the place while the klingons completely abandon honor (WHICH IS THE MAINSTAY OF THEIR CULTURE) and chill out in what can only be described as a space egyptian's wet dream. For example: DS9 handled war in the trek universe SO much better. it wasn't as simple as "hero rushes in: win!" no, the Federation was losing. badly. So Sisko and crew had to make difficult moral decisions to get the Romulans and the Klingons to help them. The Dominion War was just a plot setting. it wasn't all the show was. it took the time to let characters develop. it allowed for personality. it took it's time to let things happen in a realistic pace. Discovery just feels rushed with little sense of real direction or focus.
@Jaeih
@Jaeih 6 лет назад
The cloak the Klingons are using in this show is not the same as the one they are using later. This cloak is by far not as advanced as the cloaking devices in TOS. Remember: In DIS they are able to create a algorithm to detect ships with this cloak. That wouldnt be possible with later cloaking tech. And btw: DIS is not the first show before TOS to show us cloaking technology. Remember the Romulan warbird in the ENT episode "Minefield"? That ship cloaked aswell. Yes, the Sporedrive is not mentioned again in any other series. But it doesnt have to be mentioned. Do you remember that the project is highly classified? That is a good explanation why later on nobody knows about it. And DIS as a show is not over yet. Maybe they will give us another explanation. But saying it is stupid because it was mentioned later is like saying ENT is stupid because we never heard of a Xindi attack before. About the Klingons: You do realize, that we are not following the ordinary Klingons, you know? The focus of the show is on a highly religous cult within the Empire. Tbh, I think it adds a bit of diversity to the Klingons to see some of them with different believes. And there are not that many Klingons that didnt fight with honor. But again: we have seen before in TNG that not all Klingons think of honor the same way. Is the name "Duras" ringing a bell? And srsly, did you see the last few episodes of season 1? The federation was loosing! They almost did immoral things to save the Federation. They had to choose. The Klingon war in this show is not as deeply developed as the Dominion war, granted. But it doesnt have to be. Because it is a background setting as well. Because the purpose of the war from a writers-perspective is to be a character motivation for Burnham. Trying to end the war is what gives her her motives. Because it was her mistajes that led to the war in the first place.

The Discovery is a Science Vessel Refitted to be a Warship. It is also the only Starship that has a Spore Drive which gives it it's true power as it can jump dozens of light years in an instant. It's firepower is much less than the Constitution Heavy Cruiser. If the Enterprise had the Spore Drive the War would last a day at most. Starfleet unfortunately kept the entire line of Constitution Heavy Cruisers away from the War as "weapons of last resort" when they should have been protecting Earth from the imminent Klingon Invasion which only ended due to *PLOT CONVENIENCE* L'Rel threatening to use a Hydrogen Bomb unless the High Council ended the war. This became much more than an answer lol.

It never ceases to amaze me how self-important the Federation is. They constantly say stuff like "most dangerous weapon in the galaxy," "smartest person in the galaxy," etc, when they can't even cross the galaxy in a reasonable timeframe. They control a microscopic portion of the galaxy, and even the combined territory of the Klingons, Federation, Romulans, and Cardassians is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. They have no idea what lies beyond their puny borders. The Dominion, for example, required the combined might of the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans to defeat. The Voth make the Dominion look like cavemen striking rocks together. The Voth and other species from the Delta Quadrant can actually fight the Borg and win. These species have never been encountered by the Federation (except Voyager), and yet the Federation has the audacity to use these absolute phrases as if they know what really lies out there. Not that I am defending this series, But you seem to forget that Lorca is the one that's authorising this, and he is from the mirror universe. Not to mention that one captain doesn't represent the best interests of the federation. Judging by the fact you are comparing this to what the captain of the USS equinox did, it was pretty tame. If you think that was inhumane go watch DS9 where Sisko makes a planet uninhabitable for years just because of a grudge with a former officer of his ship. You seem to have this delusion that the federation is this benevolent saviour of the universe. Which in reality is not, they act what they think is in the best interests of themselves and the galaxy.

No, really, Traitornater's right. If you can buy that a space faring civilization that employs "agony booths" or whatever can exist, and that *spoilers already but whatever* Lorca is already considered a renegade by THAT civilization's standards, then it's perfectly reasonable for him to give the order to hook the creature up to the spore torture device to save some civilian lives. You may say it's lazy that he just happens to be Terran, and I basically agree by what I can remember of the show, but saying that the show sucks because an evil character from an evil dimension did something evil doesn't make any sense, and that's what Traitornater was trying to point out. We all know torture doesn't produce direct, beneficial results like this clip showed in the same way that we don't think Vulcans exist either.

Those first Klingons were easy to kill cause their shields weren't up since there were no Fed ships in sensor range. Once the destroyer and backups birds rolled in, with shields definitely up by then, Discovery never would've been able to handle them all at once. And those weren't mines, they were photons. Even made the photon sound. Star Trek is notorious for portraying the ships in "dog fights" even though the distances are measured in kilometers. Less boring battles to watch that way.

No correct me if im wrong but.. isnt this iteration of startrek suppose to be between the original series and next generation? if so then who in production design thought it a good idea to make the show/ships and technology look far beyond that of any show prior? makes absolutely no sense. Just as well is the way this series is shot. looks nothing at all like a star trek series. Looks exactly like something youd find on a cable series like Battlestar Galactica. I tell ya. whats hurting so many of these reboots are directors producers and writers attempting to remake the wheel. Their own ego and personal skewed vision of such classics never ever work. and yet theyre constantly given opportunity to try, to no success. Simply stick with the script! stupid!. Though JJAbrams bombed with STARWARS TFA, he did get it mostly right with Star Trek, by sticking closely to the original source being a prequel to the original show. And for the most part its been working decently. But this!.. WOh what the heck!. SMH!

even worse. it's supposed to be 10 years before TOS. Klingons aren't even supposed to be able to cloak yet.
@Goirdy
@Goirdy 5 лет назад
That's not the main problem here. Discovery flat out breaks prime canon left and right. the level of technology makes absolutely no sense for the time period. Holograms? They were only just beginning to have those in TNG. Spore drive? never mentioned brought up in any other series. if it's as useful as they make it seem, wouldn't starfleet have researched it further and found a workaround for the biological component so they could phase out warp drives? The spore drive would make more sense if this was post-voyager. It would make SO much more sense for Starfleet to research a jump drive in hopes of finding a way to ensure that what happened to Voyager couldn't happen again. THAT would make sense. but pre-TOS? No. And the klingons, holy hell the klingons. Those aren't Klingons. Those are evil space egyptians who don't give a flying fuck about honor (Which is the pretty much the whole damn point of Klingons) If this is supposed to be around 10 years before TOS, why the fuck do they have so much more advanced tech? Here's another example using Kingon Cloaking tech. Kirk spent a good portion of his career as an Instructor at Starfleet Academy. Not after his command of the Enterprise, before his command. He knows his shit when it comes to these things. So, if Klingon cloaking tech is widely known and common already, Why is he shocked to find Klingons can cloak while he's commanding the enterprise?

In regards to film and television productions, Its the age old problem with people believing more and bigger is better, and not simply sticking to the script. I work in film and broadcast. And im always dumbfounded by the cluelessness of directors writers and Producers. 99% of the time its people that youd wonder how on earth did they get their jobs. in the end you come to realize majority of them have the only talent of b.s'ing the next guy in the pipleline. in fact the top 5% of the pecking order in any production is a group of guys who survive by telling other people to do their jobs. look at any major company or corporation and i guarantee you the people at the top are little more than con artists. I use Steve jobs as an example. and i think Bill Burr said it best...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E3s-qZsjK8I.html&ab_channel=ComicPower

The cloaking device you describe in TNG was a direct violation of a treaty the federation signed with the romulans that forbade them from developing a cloaking device. Picard turns the device over to the Romulans to try and avoid an international incident. The Defiant is the exception to the treaty because it was a joint project between both the federation and the romulans. The stolen bird of prey you describe was returned. The transwarp drive was plagued with problems and was found to have more problems than uses. and you need to realize that Star Trek 5 is widely regarded as a shit movie for good reasons.
@Goirdy
@Goirdy 5 лет назад
again, you're missing what people are actually really mad about with this series. so much of this stuff makes problems posed after this show takes place pointless. My girlfriend explains it best: "The Spore Drive itself isnt the problem. The idea of instant transportation isn't the problem. The problem is that Discovery tells us that the Federation discovered and mastered this technology before the other series happened. Now every time I watch an episode of another series, be it TOS or TNG or DS9 or YOY or even the freaking animated series, I have to watch with the knowledge that this technology existed. A technology that allowed for instant transportation anywhere in the galaxy. A technology that allowed for a way to break a Klingon cloak. A technology that allowed for transportation between alternate realities. Every single episode in these other series that had an issue related to these could be now solved instantly because of this tech that, according to Discovery, always existed And even if Discovery goes "Oh hey this tech is dangerous" and they try to explain why it wont be used, that won't help either. Are you telling me the Federation wouldn't try to make it work? To make it safer? Just ditching the tech entirely doesn't sound like the Federation I know. This doesn't sound the the humans in First Flight, desperately trying to get their Warp engines to fly so they can explore the stars. That doesn't sound like the Federation engineers who can turn "rocks into replicators." This doesn't sound like the Federation that when they discovered that high warp is damaging the fabric of space, immediately found a way to make high warp safe again." people are mad at this show because it's an insult to what Star Trek was trying to do. it's an insult to what the rest of the franchise had already established. you can't just throw out nearly 60 years of lore simply because you're too fucking stupid to look at lore and story over visuals.

"Pointlessly flashy"???? No, I don't think so. Lorca used the spore drive to (a) save a colony from attack by the Klingons, and (b) destroy all Klingon vessels involved in that attack in a carefully coordinated maneuver! Or did you miss that last tactic of his to drop mines in the path of the remaining Klingon vessels before using the spore drive? He knew the Klingons would come closer in order to destroy Discovery, so he used that trait against them; THAT'S why he held off as long as he did. Like they said on "The Hunt for Red October," ...... "Combat tactics, Mr. Ryan!"

That technobabble bs was simply put there because its advanced tech, its also there because the writers sometimes dunno what the hell to call anything so they bring people with engineering background to make shit up. The show was about the exploration of space but it was also about the exploration of the human condition. How do humans react to situations and behave it difficult situations. How humans feel and rationalize actions taken by themselves or others. There has to be drama in a show which makes it interesting. @@thebushwolf710 "A little technobabble?" All the Star Trek shows are completely saturated in it. And they didn't really get people with engineering backgrounds to help them make stuff up, they just did it themselves, violating just about every scientific principle in the process. The writers of TNG did have actual scientists there giving them scientific and technical advice, but more often than not the writers just ignored them because otherwise the story wouldn't work. They were too lazy to make stuff work within the realm of reality, so for virtually every problem the crews face, they just say variations of, "Well, we can remodulate our main deflector to match the subspace frequency--". Every problem they face, they solve with meaningless made-up words because they don't know how else to do the story. They're too lazy to actually solve problems in an interesting and realistic way, so they magic them away with "science." Don't get me wrong, I love and enjoy Star Trek, but it still makes my skin crawl when the writers put something stupid in the script and betray their scientific stupidity.
