This may just be a TV series, but as a black female geek who's been a fan of Star Trek since the 80s, this moment meant *everything* to me. I can't say enough.
@@leon23mm Definitely one of the problems with not having 20+ episode seasons and a main season plot. They mainly focus on main arc plot with is tied to one or two characters instead of having like 10 episodes to just be highlight episodes for others.
Most of my issues with the show would be fix by placing it in the 25th century or just outright say this show is a reboot or placing in an alternative universe. As a huge Klingon fan the first two episodes of Discovery left such a bad taste in my mouth I cancel my free CBS subscription. I didn't came back until recently because I got a paramount+ subscription for iCarly. I love the characters it's the blatant disrespect to Star Trek lore. It really should be it's own universe.
Like Commander Sisko before her, it took the 3 season before she got the chair. I don't know why they made that choice *again* especially when they've started with the main character being a captain in everything but DS9 (and Lower Decks), and considering they let Kirk become captain so flippantly in the latter movies, but I'm glad we finally got there. Discovery needs one captain, period, and it should have been Burnham from the start. She's been at the center of everything just like every other captain in the series, so I always thought it strange.
Wrong. Sisko was always the commanding officer of DS9, even if he did hold the rank of commander. And before you start complaining about some conspiracy, Chief O'Brien (a white man) was never promoted beyond cheif for all of STNG and DS9.
@@igonovabord1342 yeah but the guy I replied to didn't say anything about black woman as a main character, he also said in Starfleet history. So it is you who nothing you said is remotely correct
But they changed them again because they didn’t work with the sets so they did the dumb thing and spent thousands of dollars making new uniforms when they could have for much cheaper repaint the sets and change the lighting
Eh, the rank shoulder thingies and the combadges are neat, but I prefer the old Disco uniform. I would’ve been happy if they kept the garments, and added the shoulder thingies and Combadge to that. Now THAT would be sweet.
TOS, in my mind, screwed up royally with "Turnabout Intruder" episode. TOS states a woman cannot be captain of a starship. Even as a teenage boy I thought that sounded backwards. And was far from a feminist. I was happy when Next Gen had Captain Garrett of the Enterprise C and ST: Enterprise had a woman captain as well. Now we have Janeway, Burnham, and Freeman. The future is for everyone.
Remember TOS was written and filmed in a different time so just like today what happens in society makes it to shows and movies was happening back then.
At the time that episode and series was made, in the 1960s, women could only be auxiliary personnel in the military forces of most major countries of the world. The very idea that a woman would command a combat vessel wasn't even a joke. It just wasn't thought of for women to command and supervise men, let alone be the commanding officer. Things are different today, and that's better all around, but it wasn't always thus. Star Trek, while always looking forward, was still always a product of the time in which it was produced.
While we all know how ass-backwards that line was (and didn't Gene Roddenberry co-write that pile of excrement??), my head canon takes it as Janice's way of deflecting responsibility for her own failures... or that the life of a starship captain doesn't permit the luxury of a stable relationship, whichever. Unfortunately, there was another unintentionally sexist line (part of the very last line, in fact)... "Her life could have been as rich and as full as any WOMAN'S (gah)..." To me, "ANYONE'S" would have sufficed just fine. Alas.
Let's see how my well my Trekkie memory is. Kirk says "takes us out. Janeway, Sisko and Picard always say "engage." Burnam says "let's fly." I think Archer also said engage but I am not sure.
How many times is Tilly going to change department colors? First she was in engineering/operations, then she had a short stint in command, now she's in science blues?
I love the show it’s my favorite sine tos I grew up in the sixties love the original Star Trek but discovery is my favorite by far don’t like the new generation to much and voyager is okay but loved the discovery it kelp me wanting more of it and Pike loved him excited to see his new series as well hope they keep discovery. Live long and prosper like khan said space is a lonely place to die. That’s what. I think if discovery is gone.
I dont mind this series however i hope there is another series in the future that will go back to basics , one captain and a star ship exploring the universe and to boldly go where no one has gone before
I enjoyed the special effects a lot. But when it comes to story that hits you? Gotta go back to the ogs. Episodes from TNG and Voyager really hits you hard even if they have aged cgi. Planning to watch ds9 next as even the new Picard felt like a rush job.
So they allow young people to Captain the enterprise while the seniors take a back seat or end up in old homes. Also, Burnham's unusually long hair is not upto starfleet standard.
Because why would they? They now have an entire planet made of dilithium. It maybe because if they jumped it would attract attention and Star Trek is all about warp drives so it would be fitting to end the series on that note.
I enjoy DSC but I've never enjoyed how they use the "Enterprise" fanfare music so regularly. Discovery is its own ship, just like Voyager was, so the music should lean on its own themes more. With Strange New Worlds coming soon, I'd love to hear the Enterprise fanfare used for that show, not Discovery
Let's get one thing perfectly clear there is only one female captain and her name is Captain Kathryn Janeway or as she is known in real life Kate Mulgrew. So the actress that is playing Michael on Discovery she has a legacy to uphold so she better not screw it up.
You sound like every curmudgeon that’s appeared with every new iteration of Trek in history. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. I can understand; Paris and Janeway getting turned into giant salamanders was such a pivotal moment in Star Trek history and no one will ever outdo that. But Disco isn’t too bad (besides the bizarre Klingons; the Abramsverse Klingons were a better update) compared to such moments as the giant salamanders. And Neelix and Tuvok getting turned into Tuvix; how can we forget that seminal moment?! 😆
People complain about the JJ-verse, but we really need to erase the Burnham-verse from the space-time continuum. Total crap, not at all inline with continuity or established canon.
I can save the ST: Discovery franchise. Start with Tilly. Tilly is too extra. No disrespect to the actor, I'm sure she's wonderful, but the new season needs to start with Tilly having a "transporter accident". Then, every episode should have Stamets cheating death from personal attacks, the Romulans, etc., and the season finale should have Stamets finally taken out by something really irrelevant like falling off a ladder in engineering or being squashed by a falling cargo container full of bolts. Then start the next season and don't mention Stamets at all. Like he was never on the show. Nobody notices he's gone. The Doctor didn't, the Captain, the ships cook, not even the tardigrade he abused the first season. Then at about the 5th or 6th Episode, call it, "Where's Stamets?" and have it start out with a really bad smell coming from one of the Jeffries Tubes. I don't know, sometimes great ideas just come to me.
I'm black and based off this statement I automatically know you'r race and why you dislike discovery. Every version of star trek is unlike the same, the only thing they have in common is tolerance.
@@lozob6475 So your racist, good to know, a few more specific reasons are terrible writing, no hopeful vision for the future. The dialogue is anything but Trek they sound like kids playing on the street. Also quit making assumptions because we all know what that does, well maybe you don't.
@@acerimmer8357 once again I didn't make an assumption you clearly are white because only white people believe in reverse racism. Racism is a power construct and by the very definition of racism black people can't be racist. And it's you're not your.
@@lozob6475 Well keep deluding yourself and yes black people can be racist just like everyone else. Maybe you should do a little reading up before making a bigger fool of yourself. As for the why I don't like it refer to listed the reasons. I also don't like Picard or Strange New Worlds for some of the same reasons. Just because someone doesn't like something doesn't make them racist. Maybe you shouldn't project the feelings you have on others you know nothing about.
Discovery had an interesting premise: Rebuild a fragmented Federation in the far (farther) future. If you ignore some of the woke garbage they stuck in there (they / them? Really?) among other things, it's not that bad. It might not be quite be MY Star Trek, but it's A Star Trek. It's an escape from reality. At least the bridge crew had more to do this season. By the way, Capt. Janeway didn't save the ship /universe all the time. Burnham shouldn't either.
Actually, IMHO Janeway is a much more compelling character ( and I hated her sanctimonious attitude) because she really struggled, nearly died and failed a bunch of times - and the writers were smart enough to show us that she was occasionally dead wrong ( sometimes with terrible consequences). Janeway never saves the day single handed, she always needs the others - same with Kirk, Picard and Sisko. Burnham is space Jesus, she fixes everything and everyone loves her. The rest of the cast just exist to show us how great she is. Worst Star Trek character ever.
Woke / Pc excrement? What you mean like having a black lady on the bridge in TOS for example? Think maybe you need to re-evaluate your life, and Star Trek whilst you are at it.
@@goshdang7897 True, but they always had some redeeming qualities and definitely, entertaining. Now its pure political dogma. It's less hypocritical now too. Eg, If you have a group a rich people denouncing rich people how much credibility do they actually have. Now they actually followed through. Purged patriarchy and all the straight white men. Considering that over 80 percent of trekies are such people it doesnt seem a smart move. But then one can never underestimate self loathing. I just like the futuristic tecnology, good writing, pretty people.
You prefer Starfleet officers that turn into giant salamanders? I can see why. That was the pinnacle of sci fi writing; no one will ever outdo the giant salamanders. 😆
@@tdrewman you mean the show that had at least kate mulgrew and robert picardo doing a great job and bring at least a couple of likeable characters into each episode? yeah, I have seen it. What likeable characters does Discovery have?
@@herrsan I some favorites Tilly, Jett Reno, Culber even Burnham. The show has gotten way better. Season 3 has been the best so far. Because of Season 2 we are getting Strange New Worlds. The classic, one and done Star Trek.. Hate as much as you want, the show is doing well without you. I remember back 87 when TNG came out, the same hate came out too. If have not seen the DS9 documentary, they read all the hate mail they got when the show first started. Funny how it sounds just like the hate people give to DSC. Almost word for word hate. DS9 was one of the best Star Treks to date.
