I can't get into ANYTHING led by Kurtzman. He doesn't get what Star Trek is supposed to be all about. The Kurtzman problem is NOT about diversity. As mentioned in the video, Star Trek was always been diverse. Star Trek episodes were morality plays. I was young when Star Trek aired in 1966 and I have been a HUGE fan ever since. I learned so much from watching Star Trek. Star Trek back then shined a spotlight on what people in power were trying to hide. Vietnam, racial inequality, etc. The topics were current. NuTrek had not been able to do it in the same way. The writers' and producers' idea is to just include diverse characters in the cast. There's no attachment to the characters or their struggles (if their internal or external struggles are even brought to light). Star Trek has never been about just one character to the practical exclusion of everyone else as in the case of STD. So, I won't be watching anything in which Kurtzman is involved. How he got the reigns to Star Trek is a complete travesty.
@alanmaxwell5932
@alanmaxwell5932 Год назад
@@GopherBaroque61 Not to mention that their idea of diversity is to have a highly partisan sitting politician represent the president of Earth, the season 1 villain being an evil xenophobic white guy that wants to "make the empire glorious again", and a whole scene that's only purpose was to show a discussion about preferred pronouns.

The audience score from Rotten Tomatoes for season 4 of Discovery has it at 20% and SNW season 1 is at 80%. Star Trek Picard season 3 is at 89% and the show isn't even finished yet. I know very few fans personally who are really supportive of the 34th century Discovery timeline beyond just as a way to wrap up that show from its complex first 2 season run. A Star Fleet Academy show is an iffy proposition in story telling concept, and setting it in that alternate future Discovery was in for later seasons, is going to be a gamble. The studio would be much better off continuing with the prime time line in the 25 century with a concept like Star Trek Legacy with the G class.

That's because they need to put it far enough into the future so that they can say it doesn't clash with the subjects we know cadets would need to have currently in the Trek universe (even though multiple shows have given us hints to what those are), plus you could potentially tap into the book universe as well. Which suspiciously sound like they want to dump the actual logical choices for subjects (because they would have no CLUE what to use as the actual curriculum) and go with potentially nonsense. Could also be that they don't want to the research and homework, which is more likely.

Got turned onto SNW after people I trusted said S01E03 onwards (excepting E08) were good (and they were!), and Picard season 3 is AMAZING and washed the bad taste of Picard S01 & S02 away. I think that was season 1 episode 6 I never went back even for 1 second. And of course there will be no rewatching. Just bloody awful. It doesn't matter I have the entire star trek sets as 3-D models, I have AII have the stories from all the novels so I will make new TNG episodes using all of the novels, And I can use AI to recreate their voices perfectly this I did in my Beyond Antares animated TOS episode here on RU-vid, on my NextWorldVR channel.

@@WoodysAR That was because Discovery and Picard seasons 1 and 2 weren't Trek. It took only a single person to get on board in Picard 3 to show the ENTIRE live-action effort what ACTUAL Trek is all about. It probably also helps that the either the new showrunner and/or his writer(s) ACTUALLY watched or know something about Star Trek. The entire season is full of easter eggs that points back to other Trek series and seasons, and it's a joy to watch. Oh, and it's DIVERSE as well, so there's no excuse for how bad the other efforts were.

I won't watch anything that has Kurtzman/Secret Hideout in charge of it. By his own admission and demonstration, he does not understand or appreciate the franchise, and only begrudgingly ever considers the feedback from the fanbase (a fanbase that has supported the franchise since before he was born BTW). I firmly believe that Strange New Worlds was only as good as it was because Kurtzman took a backseat and let someone else drive. And, one look at Picard S3 demonstrates what Star Trek *could* be -- and even what it can recover from -- if it is placed in the hands of someone who knows, understands, and, above all, *respects* the material. Show Kurtzman the door, and let him take his dour, sour, faux-gritty, Abrams-esque NuTrek with him. Let him go back to making Transformers movies and other such classics as 'The Mummy' and 'Clarise'. Wipe his fingerprints off of Star Trek, and hand the reins over to Matalas, already!

S2 of Picard happened and was almost worse than s1- this was more failure: Fans stopped watching NuTrek... SNW debuted and lost viewers as it went. The show is "ok" but still misses the mark. Everyone wanted that show but no one I know stayed with it. Now s3 of PIC was a good send off for the the TNG characters... If Legacy happens, Trek fans will return. Academy might be able to capture it while turning off other Trek audiences, and it could still have a several season run if it props up streaming numbers. The best thing to come out of Discovery was Captain Pike and Spock and Number One. Discovery itself has had very mixed reviews from good to bad to mediocre (depending on which side the fans stood) with plots that were a bit contrived at times in my opinion, full of political social commentary, and lots of dragged out plot in season long stories (with filler episodes that don't always advance the plot). Not so on Strange New Worlds!

Those sci-fi fans in the younger generation that truly care about Star Trek stopped watch STD a long time ago seeing it was nothing more than a liberal propaganda piece masquerading as Star Trek. Best plan would be to create a new Star Trek based on TNG or TOS like Star Trek Prodigy but not animated.

Picard,tng,original,ds9 and such are based on those who have been there from the start, that's the big difference.This story arc is what pulled it forward each time and its more based on Gene his legacy. Another RU-vid channel host made the point that he wasn’t going to watch Starfleet Academy because Kurtzman is a show runner. I couldn’t agree more. Alex Kurtzman is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened to Trek (yes, I know about missteps like Star Trek V, but that wasn’t continuous, like Kurtzman’s travesties). WHY do they keep him, when his track record is so abysmal???!!! Case in point: STD, which was so bad they had to move it to the 32nd century. They couldn’t even keep it in the Trek prime universe!!! Besides-haven’t they learned from the third season of Picard, which has been the best, most real Star Trek in over 20 years, for ONE reason: KURTZMAN HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!! (he may be listed as executive producer, but he’s NOT the show runner) Because Kurtzman has his grimy fingers in this project, I don’t have a lot of hope for this show, certainly from a quality aspect. It will probably be dark and gloomy, like all the other Kurtzman series are. He refuses to learn that good Star Trek is positive. So I keep hoping to continue to see Star Trek boldly going where no Kurtzman has gone before!!!

Can we go back to setting all the Trek shows in the universe's "present"? Picard, Prodigy, and Lower Decks are all in roughly the same time period, and they are a logical chronological follow on to TNG, DS9, and Voyager, which timewise were a logical follow on to TOS. All of these shows were set in "the present" for the Trek universe at the time they originally aired. Prequels generally don't work, because we know too much about how they have to end. And doing stuff in the 32nd Century turns Picard, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Legacy into prequels. (SNW works despite this because not only do we know how it ends, so does the Captain. And he has shared that knowledge with some of the crew. Se we can all settle back and focus on the episodic trip to get there. Plus it has good writing.) (Short arc prequels can also work to show us how we got somewhere. I'd love a movie or mini series about the Enterprise E.) Discovery was terrible, and I really don't want an Academy spin off set in the 32nd century. It will have a new showrunner, but will probably keep at least some of the Discovery writers. I also don't want the Section 31 spin off set in SNW's time. (And cannon requires Georgiou to be in SNWs time or die.)

@@ThePopcast I feel comfortable saying Gene likely did add diversity to the show for the sake of being diverse. Something that was severely lacking then. There was little meaningful diversity on TV in 60’s. The only difference I see between Gene’s efforts to promote diversity and what Trek is doing today? Not making a big deal out of it. Back then, a diverse crew might’ve even turned viewers off. I’ve never understood why people have issues with advertised diversity. I’m thrilled Trek has never been more progressive. It warms my heart being diverse in casting is considered a selling point of pride. Think about the sociological implications. If creators are boasting about diversity, that means more and more of the public are not only accepting, but want it. Good! That’s excellent. A far cry from Gene’s day, and I couldn’t be happier about it. I mean, some networks refused to even air Kirk and Uhura being forced to kiss! What a wonderful turnaround. However, all the diversity in the universe can’t save a show if it’s not written the best. Diversity being the best thing about the show? That is no bueno. While I do like DSC and PIC, they hadn’t been what I’d been looking for from Trek. Many of the critical complaints are valid. The pacing, the characterizations, the stories themselves, needed a shot in the arm like what Terry brought. This past year has been the absolute best Trek’s ever had. 50 weeks of Trek. My god, I never dreamed I’d be eating this well. All really good too. Well, after PIC season 2. That was merely okay. Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds though? Chef’s kiss. New Trek has officially grown the proverbial Riker beard. We’ll see if Academy shaves it off. I hope not.

What does Star Trek Starfleet Academy need to be good? 1) The curriculum and syllabi per specialization field (Command, Engineering, Medical, Science, Communications/Languages, Security, etc.- in essence, all the colored shirts) is important. This means there needs to be some consistency in what was mentioned before in other Trek shows about Starfleet Academy and the subjects and topics and skills that ALL cadets would need to know across the board (stuff like piloting, zero-G walks, survival skills when they have no access to technological tools, the ability to use their sidearms like phasers and/or heavier firepower so that they at least know the basics about its usage and applications (like heating rocks for warmth, for example), self defense (able to fight off any attackers or intruders), to name but a few. Then, if you want to set up different characters in different fields (as mentioned above), there needs to be at least some indication of progress in more advanced subjects they are introduced to over the course of the show (one can watch the episode where Geordi and Leah Brahms - both the hologram and real person version talks shop regarding engineering topics, for example). There would also need to have subjects like Galactic History (or at least Alpha Quadrant history), Diplomacy/Etiquette, First Contact Protocol and Cultural Appreciation (things you would normally see in greetings in other languages, do's and don'ts in certain cultures (Federation and peoples the Federation have encountered and interacted with on their missions), how to show respect to other Federation cultures, etc. - in other words, everything you always see and hear the Starship Captains always say when they deal with new species and races during First Contact). There can also be sub-specialization fields, like Archaeology (in the Science field), Teaching, Geology (in the Science field), History of specific Federation peoples, Psychology (in the Medical Field), etc. In other words, check out the episode synopsis/summary for any Trek episode, and use any specialist they call upon as a template for a subject or topic at the Academy. Also, instructors would be specialists in their field, like Admirals or Captains (we know this, because Starfleet captains/admirals in the past instructed students on specific things relevant to their unique experiences in the field). 2) You would need to have a mixture of academics and sci-fi. That means you need to have the introduction of things we are all familiar with in high school/college/university - the studying of textbooks to pick up knowledge, the presentation of research papers at symposiums to share and disseminate research for the benefit of everyone present, timetables, socialization of the students at peer hubs like pubs or clubs, study groups, etc. There's a LOT one can add to this, and any college or university based comedy can serve as blueprint for any of that (just add a Trek flavor/sci-fi twist to it). 3) Research for all of this need to be done - this means that who ever is going to work on it MUST at least be familiar with Trek in general, and have done research on the Academy itself (the very minimum required is AT least having read the wiki). That means knowing how the structure of the Academy works, what activities they are involved in, and what students are taught and how they are prepared for their "practicals" upon actual Starfleet ships, and what the instructor and student culture is like. They need to know HOW students are admitted into the Academy and why those students in particular are chosen. This means looking at the Starfleet Academy game, any book series written about it and any episodes featuring any cadets across any of the Trek series. There's not a lot of them, so checking out the live-action ones shouldn't take that long. There are a couple of mentions of Academy days by characters outside of cadet episodes (Red Squad episodes, for example), but it should be easy to track those because Trek fans RECORD and DISSEMINATE every piece of information ever shared in-universe - in that regard, they are only matched by Star Wars fans in taking note of any and all details of a fictional universe. You can also show students being "placed" at different locations like specific starship task forces like Neutral Zone patrol or mercy missions, locations like planetary bases or starbases (or research bases), depending on what they were being taught at the Academy. You could also show some of the students being placed at places like Starfleet Command, Starfleet Medical, Starfleet Security, Starfleet Intelligence, Federation Council, Federation News Service, etc.) The possibilities for it is limitless, for anyone familiar enough with source material. Heck, you can even have crossover time travel episodes - where Discovery jumps over to Academies and different places from previous decades (as learning experiences) even a potential Mirror Universe Academy, since they have the almost impossible task of having to restart the Academy in the future, without actually having the administrative knowhow of how to actually do that, but will need to get by the Temporal Prime Directive, somehow. Remember, Discovery's crew was TAUGHT by the Academy, they are not Academy trainers themselves. They can only reconstruct what they know based on what they were taught. That means for them restarting the Academy is very much a trial and error affair - some things they might do well and benefit from that, and they will have to learn from their failures in others, in very much how EVERY leader learns. You can EVEN work in a Section 31 storyline in there. Showing how radical students are recruited by Section 31, or how Section 31 has one or more agents working within the Academy to spot students with "recruitment potential" - there even exists a parallel in real-life for something like that; or looking to spy on any new ideas that students create for acquisition by Section 31 for use in their operations. Not saying what I've listed above is the only things that needs to be done, but if they have THAT as their foundation, they will ALREADY have done 50-75% of things right. They can then add some of their own creativity on top of that in the stories they want to tell. They already have the blueprint, all they need to do is use it.

And by textbooks, I mean PADDS. Also, students would need to be graded based on their test scores, assignments and practical projects they need to complete as part of their training (which will include various scenarios in holodeck training). Also, Starfleet Corps of Engineers being introduced would be nice as well, not to mention the merchant fleet of the Federation.

Anything Kurtzman is responsible for creatively or as a show runner will completely and totally fail. No one will tell him that his personal ideology/philosophy/political views are not only not needed in Star Trek, but NOT WANTED. Discovery has been a farce and the man nearly succeeded in ruining an iconic ST franchise character (with help from Sir Patrick Stewart). Won’t watch a minute of it. Can’t imagine how he destroys ANOTHER ST show with his serialized, plodding and flat out boring story telling. Or has everyone forgotten the crying baby causing “the burn” or the nonsense of a 90+ something year old man missing his mommy? Come on ! What a huge mistake by Paramount.

11:05-11:30: Thank goodness SOMEONE said this. (OPINION ONLY - Not stating as "fact".) No need to "divide" people/audiences. It's SIMPLE: If people wait 25 years for STEAK, and you give them PORKCHOPS, they're not "Pork-Phobic", or intolerant. They're saying that what they've waited for WASN'T DELIVERED. If YOU want to make a "NEW TAKE", or "FRESH LOOK", at anything, THEN DO THAT. Don't co-opt someone else's vision and audience, and then wonder why they don't accept it. DO THE WORK. CREATE. Make a NEW LEGACY that's YOURS with your own world/universe building. There's ROOM FOR EVERYONE, but it doesn't mean that you need to STEAL someone else's fan-base and legacy to do it. Make your own. If you have something of quality, then it will stand on its own. Anyone who says that it CAN'T be done, 2 words: SETH MACFARLANE. Space ships, "human condition" commentary, Interpersonal & personal growth and development, just like Star Trek, but he did it IN HIS UNIVERSE, not Roddenberry's.

It's time to remove Kurtzman and Secret Hideous from the kitchen. PICARD s3 was all because Kurtzman was too busy with other stuff to screw things up here, so Matalas , a real Trek fan and a good showrunner who knows the bloody show, could do a good story without being screwed with. Wipe away Kurtzman and Social Hideous, and give the Trek universe a rest. Let it rest for about a decade...then bring it back with no woke, no high school Academy shows , and no more sludge. Do real Trek. That means hiring people who really like Trek, not people who want to change the universe into "modern" crap.

"Discovery fans not too happy about it" You mean all three of them? xD ? you guys must have watched a different STD xD If they set Starfleet Academy in the abysmal STD Timeline it's dead on arrival. Also Tilly herself is a sign of what was wrong with Starfleet in STD. It's supposed to be the best and brightest and not people who'd fail at a surface level psych eval. What STD fanbase? :3 But Starfleet Academy was always diverse as seemingly anyone could apply for the testing part if they're good enough. Like we had 1 human and iirc at least 2 aliens in the TNG episode with Wesley taking the test (out of 4 tested iirc). But god please no STD connection or worse even set in the same timeline, the Burned-ham-verse s'cks, get away from it as far as possible if you want the brand to survive. I mean 16 years of age could make sense if each Academy year would take 1 earth year. So the cadets would progress naturally through it. Yeah, cadets shouldn't be diversity hires, but again the best and brightest of their species. The Berman years might be the golden age of Star Trek as in from TNG to ENT basically. Let's get back to that spirit, not the devolved humans from Klutzman Trek. An Academy series should be used for worldbuilding and have options for cameo galore due to mission simulations. And as long as the new cadets aren't the bestest evar, as in even better than historical characters then it would work beautifully. It shouldn't be CW nonsense where feelings are mo0re important than the lessons of the Academy. Benefit of the doubt while Klutzman is still involved and it may be set in the worst timeline ever? Yeah...how about no? xD

The thesis of the video is correct, story over the diversity issue. Star Trek is diverse and the fact they have LGBTQ+ characters should not be center stage. By not putting the LGBTQ+ at the forefront makes them an equal/visible part of the population that they have always been a part of.

When you watch Discovery in the 32nd century and you see the ships from that Era, you get a lowsy blue non-scientific control panel along with unexplained perpultion and overall technology.. Star Trek is a progession of thoughts and ideas from the passage of time as we grow. We had a jump to the 32nd century and without the natural Star Trek progression. The 25th century is a progession of time after thoughts and ideas from the centuries before. I dare to ask what the 32nd century would have been like if the show was able to progress naturally instead of jumping? I want the 25th century, and I want it now.

I simply have no interest in watching younger beings "figure stuff out" like an intergalatic high school series. All the bickering in the episode on Discovery was more than enough for me to know that was as much as I wanted to know about Starfleet cadets. One show was more than enough for me. If it's an "and" situation, bring it on, I don't have to watch it. But if it means #StarTrekLegacy doesn't get made, no, I will vote against Starfleet Academy.

I also tried to watch Prodigy, but found it too stupid, and the characters too pointless and obnoxious (but I do realize it was meant for kids). On the other hand, I found Strange New Worlds by far the best Trek content I had seen in decades. I have always been a Star Trek fan- have the movies and all the series on disc. My take on the last group of shows is that Picard and Strange New Worlds are more entertaining and have a great storyline. Discovery comes across as more about social agenda, as mentioned "social activism". The Trek storyline is there but with seemingly less about species diversity and more about sexual diversity. I have been disappointed with Discovery. The other two series, IMO, are fantastic. I loved the post narrative, "you dont need to show us how diverse your characters are in the storyline."

There were definitely problems with the writing on Discovery but the ‘social justice’ aspect wasn’t really the problem. Social justice has always been a part of Star Trek, I mean, it’s an extremely leftist/liberal show. The Federation is essentially communist/anti-capitalist post-scarcity society. Even in the first pilot, they were challenging social norms of the 1960s by having a woman in the command structure. It doesn’t look revolutionary or out of place now, but it sure was then. Having prominent gay/trans/whatever characters is totally in keeping with Star Trek. My issues revolve around really clunky writing, inconsistent characterisation, and plodding plots.

I think it would be best for Star Trek to move away from the Discovery timeline and pretend it never happened. Instead, I'd love to see a Klingon show focused on Worf leading a group of Klingons and teaching them about honor and the way of the warrior. Alternatively, a spin-off featuring Wesley Crusher as Captain would be exciting, or even a continuation of the Seven character from Star Trek Legacy. On a positive note, I've been enjoying Star Trek: Strange New Worlds so far. This is the kind of Star Trek show I want to see - it's exciting and allows us to escape from the realities of everyday life. Overall, I appreciate shows that stay true to Star Trek's core values and offer a sense of hope for the future."

So they know that fans OVERWHELMINGLY, are hoping for a STAR TREK: LEGACY series...riding on the wave of Picard season 3..... where nthey FINALLY got it right..with BOTH fans and crotics. Even Strange New Worlds is more a return to old form and fewls MUCH more like genuine Trek than Diwcovery ever did.. although Diacovery is more " trek like" last few seasons than prior..but still not in the same league as its spinoff or picqrd 3...butbi digress. So CLEARLY the fans are hankering for a series set in the less distant 25th Century....which is perfect for storylines as Starfleet has become much more advanced, powerful and finally shaking awaynthe cloud ... that was darkening Starfleet almost corrupted it..but now they are pulling out stronger than ever. THE first (Q induced) meeting with the Borg was the very beginning....and ultimately, what gave them a fighting chance whwn they took on the Dominion......WAR.. coming off the heels of the third Borg attempt at assimilateing Earth...even incorporating time travel..which was stoppwd by The enterprise d and crew..just in time. Mow focus coul concentrate on the Dominion and their new Cardassian alliance which the wlisive Breen will also be swayed over to the Dominion. The Dominion nWar However, is what TRULY set Starfleet/ Federation on the militarized,nand becoming increasingly isolate hichnonlybincreased..along with eXploration... former main mission of starfleet..now put on " the backburner." the destruction of Romulus followed by the Android massacre on Planitia ..forget name but the Mars ship building facility... So while STRIVING to be a " true utopia " itbwill never quite get there until our minds (and other similarly advanced but equally "biological" alien races) evolve significantly beyond our large ape brains. Even 700 years in the future from picard season 3 Feseration and Starfleet have again entered a downward spiral..even leaving its former home of Earth as they were seen as a liability for the planet's security and Earth could now easily defend itself..even the Dominion using same tech from cwnturies prior...had ALMOST managed to obertake Earth itself. ..NOT THIS 32ND CENTURY EARTH...Dominion wouldn't have stood a chance.

Well, at the moment not overly excited. I did not like prodigy, lower decks is just to slapstick for me. Discovery, well changes made to the Klingons put me off, and over all while I still watched only season 4 was ok to me. Strange New World so far has been the only new trek I can say I have really enjoyed. While Picard was nice to see the characters again, storywise I did not care for it. For this new show it really is going to be down to cast. ST:SNW did this well for season 1. I know Kirk is going to be in season 2 but personally they should have kept the character back until the final season. The character may be fantastic, well written and well acted, but that's really not the point. It has the danger now of becoming the Kirk show not the Pike which really is what SNW's is. OK Academy is still a Star Trek show, so will at least watch the first season, just cannot get all that excited about it yet. That may or may not change once more details about cast and character emerge.
