I know the technical capabilities of a Constitution 2 Heavy Cruiser Starship. It's a considerably big stick as described. But the firepower of this vessel can lay waste to the surface of the planet. It doesn't quite have the muscles to destroy a planet completely. General Order 23 authorises the use of this firepower to destroy source of signal. This was during Kirk's tenure on the Enterprise with Eminiar 7 - and 8 years later. I think. The starship class packs a lot of power and there's no doubt that it could do so, as I have described. As to destroy a planet completely. Not normally I suspect! Destroying the surface of a planet, yes, it's got this capacity to do so. I would suspect that the Excelsior or the Enterprise B WOULD have that capacity of destroying a planet. But that's not the intended mission of Federation Starship crews - observation, and gentle encouragement is the best way to get it done. And unobtrusive as well! Destroying planets is not an option. Unless part of the Terran Empire Fleet. Starfleet in our reality would not do it.

@@stephenfarthing3819 I'm not sure even the newer ships have the ability to destroy a whole planet but they can turn the crust into molten rock. The outer layer of a planet is just a small part of the planet overall. We seen something similar happen in DS9 when the Tal Shair attacked what they thought was the dominion home world. They had about 20 ships and the first combined salvo destroyed %40 of the planets surface.

I love when people say oh a starship cannot hover like that, it can't sit underwater yet we forget one thing. Do we have starships that can go at warp speed or can activate shields or beam people down. Those things are considered possible in star trek while other things are not. the point is, the ship is fictional so we do not even know that any of this stuff will be possible, but I do know that if we did have a starship that could do that, I think it is very possible they could sit under water or float in the sky too. At one time, they said we could not fly or put a person in space, yet we did. Anything is possible when we aim and commit to it.

In Voyager, the Delta flyer not only traveled underwater but went to an absurd depth of like 500,000 meters in that waterworld episode. At a mere 5,000 meters underwater, you're facing 500x the pressure at Earth sea level. That's 50,000 atmospheres of pressure the Delta Flyer was under! Then in DS9's Starship Down, the Defiant struggles to withstand the atmospheric pressure in the upper atmosphere of a gas giant. Obviously we don't know the specifics of the planet, but using Jupiter as an example, the highest pressure measured in Jupiter's upper atmosphere is a mere 22x Earth sea level. There's wild inconsistencies even among the classically beloved Trek series and people wanna complain about a ship hovering in the sky 🙄🙄

I am under the impression that Star Trek TOS communicators: * must be in the open position before communication can occur, and * must be in close proximity to the user (i.e., within a few feet), before communication can occur. See Star Trek TOS, "Omega Glory." Mr. Spock performed a long distance mind meld with Chief Cloud's woman. Mr. Spock hypnotically convinced her: * to retrieve a communicator, * to bring said communicator to himself, and * to open said communicator. She did as she was commanded, and Mr. Spock was able to contact the Enterprise. As such, the Enterprise sent a landing party to retrieve the hostages. In the ST: SNW episode above, the communicator is in the closed position, and is at least fifty feet from Captain Pike. Remember when Star Trek had canon?

If you insist that all technology prior TOS may not be more advanced than the technology shown in TOS than you have the problem that we are already are more advanced in some areas than they could imagine in the 1960. Prime example would be flatscreens, can't have them before the 2260 because TOS only had tube-monitors. Trying to keep the technical canon intact will lead to one of two possible outcomes: either a lot of silly explanations while the old tech is still in use. Or the creation of a separate timeline where the flatscreens are not invented until after TOS, maybe because the eugenic-wars of 1996 prevented it. In both cases it will looking ridiculous when they are working with obsolete tech in the future. But we want Star Trek not to be in some kind of alternate future, we want it to be in our future. That is why the same fans that usually complain about every minor canon violation have no problem accepting pushing back the date of World War 3/ Eugenic Wars and however they will deal with Bell Riots that are supposed to be happening in two years. The writers were western writers and airplane jockeys that crashed when the horses broke free or the engines cut out. Just like Warp was supersonic jet and Impulse was prop plane stuff in their logic...both would get you there and you could see each other. The ship simply cannot do that.

Actually, it can: it did in TOS. Not that I'm defending this show: I'm not.

@@Idazmi7 I the TOS episode they had plunged into the higher atmosphere but they were not hovering. They had to put out a lot of thrust to keep up. That's a bit different than hovering about 1000 feet or so over a city with no forward momentum. The enterprise of that era simply wasn't something that went into an atmosphere.

@@cb-gz1vl _"I the TOS episode they had plunged into the higher atmosphere but they were not hovering. They had to put out a lot of thrust to keep up."_ The ship was also heavily damaged from smashing into a black hole at warp speed. Which, if you hadn't noticed, is not the case here. Yes, the Enterprise can indeed hover in an atmosphere.

@@Idazmi7 There is literally no evidence of this in TOS. All it did was fly in the upper atmosphere and struggled to do so. Its not an atmospheric ship.

@@cb-gz1vl It does so on several occasions. I'm confused why you say it can't It does so throughout Tomorrow is Yesterday. It also comes down low enough to fire on a city block in Piece of the Action. In Operation-Annihilate Enterprise deploys satellites around Deneva at an altitude of 72km, assuming Deneva is roughly Earth like in size that would be in its upper atmosphere. Enterprise was definitely not a deep space only vessel.

@@Eggstree1 Very true as I'll grant that. However that's very low hanging fruit given how much the franchise has been destroyed by lazy and incompetent science fiction writing.

So breaking the Prime Directive is how this show opens? Star Trek has completely lost its way! I'm heart broken 💔

There wasn't a "Prime Directive" yet. Just Starfleet General order 1.
