A graphic, gameplay, and features comparison of DICE's Star Wars: Battlefront II from 2017 - 2019 and Pandemic Studio's Battlefront II from 2005. #StarWars #Battlefront #Comparison
It might not be as good looking as modern games, but there's a mod db remaster project for pc that makes the game look great without changing anything beyond visuals
Battlefront II (2005) looks really impressive for its time. Especially considering the scale of the battles they were able to pull off with such limited hardware and still keep good visuals.
This guy doesn't even know WTF his talking about brah like his comparing. Graphics form a 2005 to a 2017 game. Lol his a total joke then acts as if the 2005 is some what bad because the sound of the 2017 is way better lol.
The first original Battlefront game had a living sarlacc that would snatch and eat you if you got too close. Both of EA’s remakes features a dead, unthreatening sarlacc that could only possibly kill you if you jumped straight into it. That perfectly illustrates the contrast between a game, and something that pretends to be a game.
I think what I miss the most is the scale and overall approach to the battles. Having mostly open fields to fight on, rather than set routes, helped the gameplay feel more dynamic.
I dont tbh. I played this game religiously and I cant tell you how many times I've been spawn trapped on Kashyyyk while playing as the Separatists by some dude in a CIS Droid tank.
Really no other word for it. I know it's not a remake.. but it looks better than saying "Direct comparison of this game made by this one studio in this year against this other game with the same name of this other studio in a different year"
@@JonatasAdoMthe ps2 version was downgraded actually. The Xbox version and the pc version could run ai heroes on the opposite team. Plus the visuals of the Xbox version were superior to that of the ps2.
I really disagree about the “neither campaign is that memorable” I still remember the 2005 campaign to this day while the 2017 campaign is just...meh, and the 2005 campaign is something i would gladly play again while the 2017 campaign, again, is so average that there’s barely a reason for me to go back and play it again
Damn the 2005 version was such a good game. I loved the facts you could doc in an enemy ship during a space battle jump out and fight your way to the reactor, blow it up and fly to your safety!! What a game!!!
I hope they remaster it soon or maybe even remake it. If they ever remake it tough they have to make space battles even bigger with a lot more Star destroyers that you can get into (and no microtransactions obviously)
@@greywolf2038 I know this is late but I did actuslly find a really cool small fan remaster of it that didn't really change the gamplay, but made the game look and sound a lot better
The old game is more focused on recreating the feeling of being on a Star Wars battlefield. For it's time and limitations I think they did a great job. They also focused more on off line play since the internet was still not a big thing yet. I know I never played online at the time. While the new game has online play as a backbone of the experience, which is understandable in the current gaming landscape.
@@calastyphon3414 It was growing. BF2 launched a few months after RU-vid. The internet was not nearly as ubiquitous in 2005 and the offline content was made for the people who still were running like dial up internet or still didn't have it. My family had dial up internet till like 2008 when DSL was finished.
@Mammoth Supremacy 55 you can get many things like a good PC which can last you longer although being more expensive and still get the majority of games that both consoles get. As much as I like my consoles the only one I recommend if you don't have much money is one from Nintendo. Because they have many exclusives PC won't ever get. But pretty much just recommend a PC it's also used for more than just games so it's versatile
@@cuttlefish6839 You can emulate nintendo games on a pc though you need a powerful pc or play old nintendo games. Following the main comment topic in the ps2 i never played online and i don't know many people who used ps2 online.
I think we know why the hangars in the original Battlefront 2 are superior from a gameplay perspective though. Because I can actually walk around in them and use the ships, taking off and landing in both hangars for the space combat, instead of the ships simply being set pieces.
John Fisherman new coop mode they added is just like instant action! You can’t use he original trilogy but it saved this game for me. You level up and everything, granted a tad slower, but it’s a lot of fun just like the old game especially if you have some buddies
All we wanted was a remaster in the Battlefield style. Instead they gave us something completely different, which isn't bad.. it will just never be battlefront.
We got a battlefield style remaster tf you talking about. Though certain... things are limited in terms of vehicles, the game plays much better than the original.
@@rohansampat1995 Battlefront II has become a good game yes. But it doesn't have that *battlefront* vibe to it.. only the original battlefront games has that, and its not a battlefield remaster. If it had been, it would've been much better as Battlefront and battlefield are very much alike i terms of how they're structured.
@@viktorbrndsted9912 are you referring to the gamemodes? supremacy is similar to the original Battlefront 2's instant action. I think the only thing that doesn't make it feel like the originals to me is the graphics and the fact that you can't select classes from the command posts, also you can't go inside enemy hangars in starfighter assault. the game is still all about putting you inside the boots on the ground in the star wars universe, the original selling point of the first games
Damn I wish EA hadn’t forced dice to move on... I really wanted them to tackle some of those classic planets. I remember Dagobah was one of my favorite maps back then along with Mygeeto
I just bought it two days ago because I saw multiple videos praising it’s comeback and it was like $11 on Xbox. I love it and have been playing it non stop
I used to play battlefield but they ducked that game over so bad that I just stopped. I’m glad I did because I’m actually enjoying myself in battlefront and I don’t have to deal with the plethora of issue bf5 faces.
I believe that both games are good in there own ways, Dice has used technological improvements and new trilogy to their adventage to make a more polished and beautiful game...HOWEVER Pandemic made some very ambitious choices, which paid off tremendously, things like Boardable ships, Galactic Conquest, Hunt mode, the sandbox map design, and amazing vehicles are something Dice STILL hasn't lived up to. But both games are worth playing.
@@cuttlefish6839 I fail to see how it is unbalanced as both teams have only aesthetically different ships, however the concpet of being able to board and sabotage capitalships is an amazing idea, and with this current technology should have been replicayed with ease, and the sheer fun factor of boarding it was an amazing experience, even for today's standards. Dice missed a really big oppurtunity here.
@@softeyez6700 both games are good, however if Pandemic had more active multipayer servers, and more updates, I would play it more, however I still jump into it once or twice a month
@@rectaltickler8303 No Hunt mode, hardly any different between classes. No space hangers. Vehicles have to be earned through points and you can't get in and out. No Galactic Conquest. Mediocre level design and no goddamn MUSTAFAR or Order 66 modes. It's barely fun.
Borat Sagdiyev fucking yes! I would sit a play that for hours on the original. My droid army would rule the galaxy!!!! Honestly that’s the only reason I’m still holding out on buying the new one, once they give me GC and make it offline friendly I’m totally in!
Lukson or maybe because people forget that they don’t have it. I do think that once they add all the trilogies to Co-Op and Instant Action, it would be easy to program a Galactic Conquest mode and it’d be a fan favorite
I actually find Battlefront II (2017) to be really fun now, but even without the nostalgia goggles, there's a level of depth that the 2005 version gives that DICE's does not.
Battlefront 2004 did have heroes, btw, I distinctly remember Mace Windu on Geonosis and Count Dooku on both of the Rhen Var maps. They just weren't playable, but they were there.
I remember i would be running scared from mace windu and he would never die no matter how many thermal grenades i threw at him. I would blow him off a cliff and he’d be gone for awhile
BASANTH NEKKALAPUDI bruh, i still play it. I got on PS2, Xbox 360, Xbox One and on my PC. Best thing is that on PC you can get graphics mods while still retaining the amazing gameplay.
Jason Arseneau but obviously lacking offline. I hope when they get a bigger team than 10 they can also put focus on offline becuase they don’t have the time and staff to do it. But, they’re doing great so far for a small team.
Which was ... right after launch. Every single added content was free and directly patched on the game, that was already the case for the Ep.8 content back in Dec 2017
it didn't have ground to space it had space cutscene, then ground, the psp version wasn't even taxing for them to do that, there is no way their able to do ground to space with today's graphics especially on console
@@Ryan-zr4fj yes it's possible to do ground to space, look up Star Citizen theatre's of War. Next gen is coming too so in BF3 it should definitely be a thing otherwise they're going to get out spaced by other space games.
@@DeepStone-6 *Scam Citizen. A glorified Tech demo that will end with the developers running with the money since it is way too ambitious and if it does finished then that means it's pay to win since the backers will get every single ship in the game!
There are also many mods for swbf2 2005 on pc which has space to ground. And pandemic swbf3 which did not release every single battle was going to have space to ground which was going to be on Xbox 360, not as strong as Xbox one performance. So dice can do space to ground.
They. Did. That. In. Fucking. 2005. Understand?. 2005. That is more than enough for me. And the somewhat resemblence to battlefield 1942 makes me love the game even more.
Put down your nostalgia goggles. Pretty much all maps in og battlefront 2 were just big empty fields. It's terrible by todays standards. You can say that it was good in 2005 but we live now in 2020 and ea bf2 clearly have miles better map design today
The original bf2 was how I formed close relationships with friends so it will forever be in my heart but the DICE reboot is just so polished and the gameplay variety keeps me playing more than any current FPS. I just really wish they would add a server finder and map voting.
You forgot to mention unlocking special weapons after a certain number of kills with them. For example, the standard trooper's main weapon gets upgraded to a burst weapon.
@@Gadget-Walkmen It's still gambling. Just because you don't use money, doesn't mean the addicting effect of taking or chances at a random chance box aren't there. If you could pull a slot machine for free, it would be the same game.
Yes, the game had a progression. It would take your actions and reward you for it. If you reached a proficiency level, you'd get them permanently. For example, if you sabotaged (I believe 300) vehicles with your repair tool, you'd get the skill of always self reparing any vehicle you were on and it was invaluable. Like the standard rifle that would work like Boba Fett's blaster, the Engineer's shotgun would be upgrade to kill almost anything with a headshot and pretty much anything else with 2 shots. These were progressions worth going after, not these meaningless awards and achievements made just to give you a random engagement goal.
@@mrhenrik7472 Microtransactions became pretty obsolete with the release of the Celebration Edition anyway... Also, why not? I for one would want to be able to play as my favorite clone legion/ hero in Instant Action just as much as online
@@mrhenrik7472 Microtransactions haven't really played a role in Battlefront 2 EA for a very long time. Most things are earned in game pretty easily through credits you get in battles. Celebration edition just gives you everything that you'd buy anyway (which is literally just cosmetic) for a pretty low price. And any expansion other than the Celebration Edition, (which itself is less an expansion and more a game of the year edition style of release) is completely free.
I think what gives the 2005 version a better edge is the game's still very active modding community. There are new maps, game modes, skins, and entire conversion mods for Battlefront 2 2005 that makes it so fresh each time you play it.
I've never seen how bad the graphics of the old SWBF 2 until it was compared to the new one 😂 But if you're from the good ol' times, you will never look at the graphics, but the gameplay
@@TheUnclaimedOne I started gaming with the best graphics. But I still enjoy games such as WOW, and the original Counter Strike. It's all about the quality of the gameplay, storyline, maps or something like that
@@pogiakoo69 I know, heck, my first cosole was the Super Nintendo. lol. It was more of a trick question as I'm only 17 and so have more experience with the more advanced games, but I love some older games more than newer ones. One of my favorties is Sega's Gain Ground and my favorite Mario is Super Mario World (oddly enough it's on the SNES). Honestly, graphics mean practically nothing to me. I can appreciate amazing graphics and artwork in games, but it'll never be a deal breaker or priority when it comes to actually playing a game.
In the original battlefront 2 you could actualy sort of customize weapons by completing in match challenges for each class, which resulted in the weapon being upgraded for that life.
I really liked having the challenges of getting 300 kills with a certain class just so I could unlock the upgraded pistol in 2005 version. That weapon was super OP
Hey Nick, I know I'm a bit late, but I just found out that yesterday was your birthday, as I saw your anouncment. I just want to wish you a happy birthday, your videos have taught me to appreciate every little detail in videogames, and enjoy things even further. Thanks mate!!! :) :)
I still hate EA for releasing BF II 2017 like it was. But they made a complete turnaround on the game and its actually really good now. I hope we get a BF III someday, but one with cosmetic microtransactions only from the start
They didnt have a choice loot boxes had to be taken down after the backlash. Ea is one of the most corrupt companies that have ever existed in the gaming industry. This is why it holds the record for worst company of the year twice in a row.
One thing I miss that I dont think you touched on, unless I missed it, is the medal/ranking system from the original. The medals would give u bonuses and if u got enough medals you would just eventually permanently have those bonuses. And if you got higher ranks you could get ai bots to follow you, up to 3 I think. I always liked that little feature
Finally. Ive been scrolling these comments about a half an hour, maybe more, to see if anyone else mentioned the commands for the AI on your team. That's what made me fall so hard for these games.
The original BF2's 501st-oriented campaign is one of the best stories in legends or cannon. It was fun and it gave an interesting and believable look into the Republic and Imperial army from a clone's perspective. As good as the new game has gotten it will never beat the original in this regard. Also, all subsequent cannon attempts to explain the military transition of clones to stormtroopers has kinda sucked in comparison
Word. And who doesn't want the somber, yet stoic sound of Aquaman's dad regaling and guiding you into battle flash backs basically? And while I agree the 501st campaign does it best, I also love Rebels when they go over the chip thing and few and far between defects. I thought that was a solid touch.
@@swoozyduzzytgottaloveit2966 Rebels was really just a bs kids show. It just displays the empire as a bunch of dorks that can't do anything. I know that they had some more or less major flaws but still they got away with far more stuff then they should have. The plot armour was just too big. They never would have won against Thrawn for example since he was a brilliant mind and couldn't be that easy decieved. When he still was still in the Chiss Defense Fleet and took down 2 Lucrehulks fully loaded with Vulture Droids with only 3 Ships and a couple of fighters in the end with 0 casualties. So their freighter probably would have ended get blown to piece by a Arquintens instead the other way around. Also Vader incompetence was too unreal compared to what you see in reality of him, he would have killed Kanan and Ezra easily. He has done worse stuff than killing a teenager and some no name former Padawan.
honetsly it was a terrible campaign, cuz the story was so unbelievable, the chips in their heads from the clone wars is much more believable but still not satisfactory.
@@vostroyanseventeenth cuz the clones with the chips make sense as to why they would betray their jedi, the indoctornization theory does not hold when clones have deep relationships with their jedi leaders.
I love them both so much, I still have never anticipated a sequel or almost anything as much as when I was waiting for Battlefront 2 to come out, because the first was good and the sequel promised more. I was not dissatisfied nor disappointed, but the first one really is a gem.
I did like the maps better in 1 i think - particularly the ground maps which also had air vehicles, which were lacking in 2. I remember geonosis was better in BF1 Also in BF2 too many confined linear corridoor maps that turned into rocket/mine spamfests.
I enjoy the stiff and clunky movement of older games compared to less responsive fluid versions we have today. Movement lag pisses me off to no end, and sometimes it makes me not want to play certain games.
Jingo sek What’s pissed me off to an end is your unfinished first sentence. Now that I’ve brought it up, I can forget about it. That’s the end I mentioned.
Yeah I feel you, like how a character has to do an animation before he can complete your input, I accept it in open world games but not multiplayer shooters
Something to say for the balance of the old one, is that it was more "realistic." Meaning if you got shot by a rocket, or sgepled on a mine, you are dead.
You also have to realize the big disadvantage of being a heavy trooper is that it takes you a long time to reload one rocket by the time you reload that rocket somebody could have already killed you, but you're not mentioning the engineer trooper, which has the ability to heal themselves and has a shotgun I can kill you at point blank range. Not to mention it has c4, and you can always spam back and forth on Stormtroopers between pistol and blaster rifle. I do it all the time. It's actually a professional tip that I picked up myself,
I have a bone disease and when I was a kid, after one of my surgeries, my mom was staying at the hospital with me, and my dad brought my brothers to visit me. Battlefront 2 had just come out and instead of going back home my dad took my brothers out and bought it right then and brought it back to the hospital room and we played it for the first time into the night on the slim ps2 I brought with me
As someone who also has a bone disease I can confirm that we, at the very least, get some pretty good video game stories out of it due to all of our down time.
One thing to note, there was a semi large update to the original battlefront 2, depending on what you were playing on, it was apparently a few years after release. A few new characters and maps, and they allowed the heroes v villians mode on more maps.
Wish you covered vehicles since they seemed more dumbed down in the latest edition with heavy target lock-on. Especially since you spawn in them, instead of having to actually enter them through a hangar.
There was just far too much to cover. I had a vehicles section, including how AI currently cant operate them on the ground, but it had to be cut for the sake of keeping it at a reasonable length.
I want Galactic Conquest back!!! Those space to ground fights were something special. It would be amazing to have that same level of immersion across all the trilogy series. I hate how the modern game does all the work for you. I don’t want a loading screen, I want to commandeer a troop transports, load up my whole squad, then try and crash the enemy hanger. I miss the Pandemic era, they had the right ideas on how to make the battles feel more grand
battlefront (2015) has a lot of that. granted, you need to get dlc but most people already get them for how great they are. scarif and the death star have amazing multiphase battles with air and land
@@armzngunz It's called having a different style, or opinion, or whatever you wanna call it, just because YOU don't enjoy it doesn't mean nobody else won't enjoy it aswell.
In my opinion there is still no comparison as far as I’m concerned, yes EA’s battlefront has graphics, sound effects blah blah, but when it comes to that nostalgic feeling of being part of the war which is Star Wars, the original pisses all over EA and dice.
Nostalgia is sensitive memory mixed in with emotional reactions. As far as sensitive memory goes, DICE's game tears the original a new one, simply because as said, better graphics, textures, physics, animation, sound effects. But also better gameplay and controls. It's simply more realistic and more faithful to live-action Star Wars at the same time, saying otherwise is denying facts. Emotional reactions makes you go towards the OG only because they are younger memories from when you were more impressionable and had lower standards and criteria for a fun experience. I assure you that for younger Star Wars fans who didn't play the OG when they were in high school, the new BFII will be the ultimate Star Wars game.
@@carolusmartellus2520 actually yea, it HAS bigger maps with more details, however it lacks some modes, and the CORE aspect of the original 2005 bf2, mods and custom maps and modes, wich is A BIG deal
@@carolusmartellus2520 the graphics are better but the original has better game design, it went for a gameplay style that focused on freedom the new one just focuses on getting the look of star wars which is cool and all but the wow feeling wares off and what you are left with is an quite average linera game
@@carolusmartellus2520 Nah. EA's Battlefronts treat the franchise like a novelty. The graphics and sound design are amazing, but the gameplay is laughably unambitious for a Star Wars game. Some of the worst feeling guns in shooter history, no interactivity between classes, no cooperatively operated vehicles, and most importantly, *zero* ambition with game modes. OG Battlefront 2 had ship to ship combat, and Free Radical's Battlefront 3 was attempting ground-to-space combat. Unless you're a hardcore Star Wars fan that just wants pretty sights and sounds, there's literally no other reason to play EA's Battlefronts over the dozens of better shooters out there.
@@marbl3d45 yeah, it was better with the update, but at the end of the day EA still doesn't understand what made the originals so good. I like the new games, but as multiplayer FPS, not as true Battlefront games.
Thank you for speaking to Battlefront 2's single player campaign (the 2019 updated version). Great video overall. I've decided to purchase the 2005 and 2017 version to play the single player campaign based from your evaluation from this video.
I would be more interested if you compared the artstyles between games, graphic quality is no contest for 2005 but here is a real comparison between stylized vs photorealistic modeling. Props on comparing the mechanics, most people ignore or don't seem to know
just gonna drop my wall on gameplay as a competitive player (not a very good one btw): "movement is stiff and clunky" map design really nullifies any clunkyness honestly, cover is key and its well placed in most viable maps, mos eisley is the shining example but also mustafar, death star, tantive, coruscant and naboo make great use of cover. death star is the easiest to understand, its crates serve as both cover and movement options . "combat is often repetitive and unsatisfying" for me this is only true when playing as the regular soldier. engineer, sniper, and the spec classes all are varied and have a high skill ceiling. i could bore you with a long winded explanation of engis detpacks but ill leave it at this, engis kit works well with each other, his dets can be tossed at enemies in cover to flush them out into an aimduel with his shotgun which allows for interesting fights with snipers or other engineers since youre likely dead in 1 or 2 hits so movement, cover, and aim is absolutely key. this makes engagements more about map knowledge and skill than the grunts boring gameplay of spamming something until its dead . sniper also rewards skill greatly with low time to kill and great ability to get positioned due to their high movement at the cost of being frail. this also rewards both map knowledge and skill, aiming shots and killing before you get forced out of cover is extremely important and a sniper can absolutely dominate an uncoordinated team. "in the original swbf2 blasters have finite ammunition" this makes more difference for explosives, for example sniper and rocket cant force out more than 1 or 2 enemies for ez ohkos with their grenades and can only leave 1 turret/3 or 4 mines to defend. this makes management of resources important instead of waiting for a cooldown so you can have fun again. "ammunition can be replenished from nearby gonk droids" this also rewards map knowledge. see a pattern? "health functions similarly in that theres a distinct healthbar in the corner of the screen that can be replenished by medical droids or blue containers" this rewards a well built and coordinated team, since the engineer can drop packs for himself and his teammates. this makes the engineer both self sufficient and a team player, rewarding both individual and team skill. health regen instead encourages you to camp and inch forward instead of making a quicker push. this makes the game feel sluggish. "in the original battlefront 2, assault troopers can oneshot enemies easily with their rocket launcher" its easy to see it coming and movement and cover nullify it, limiting it to choking hallways and controlling space "and spam mines in narrow hallways, effectively blocking attacks on objectives" see the health paragraph, engineer is immune and can use his fusion cutter to destroy mines for his team, meaning engineer can take on an entry fragger role by tossing detpacks at the camping rocket to keep him holed up or dispatch him with his shotgun and destroying the mines for his team, yada yada team coordination and map knowledge. "all of these classes are equipped with standard cosmetics based on the map and predefined loadouts with no way to customize them further" you make this sound like a downside but i prefer it from a balance perspective. the lack of cosmetics means its easy to distinguish classes and the lack of loadouts means the focus is on balancing around classes rather than individual weapons that you dont know if someone is carrying. "the original battlefront from 2004 didnt even have any heroes as it was decided it would detract too much from the core battle experience" i agree with their mentality honestly, heroes could go on massive tears and would force the enemy team to throw mines and detpacks at them until they died which was near impossible since they could just jump over. "in terms of design, dices map design is also built with much better multiplayer lane design" mos eisley and mustafar ctf are incredible maps, especially mos eisley. these maps have many different lanes to reward teams who know where to pull the flag and who can defend their flag carrier. (not related but "large empty fields with little to no cover at all" while showing mos eisley lmao, the buildings are intended as the cover, winding between them is a core part of the map) kinda a random note to end on but the gameplay sections end here. thanks for reading all my runon sentences full of abstract semantics (and random big words like that lmao) if you did. if i made you intrigued about competitive swbf2 2005, we host mix scrims of all skill levels almost every night in the battlefront competitive league discord and i would be happy to explain more indepth about anything you ask, just dm Lolina#0500 for the discord invite or for explanations. and ofc thank you for making this video for me to waste my christmas eve on nick930 LMAO.
I'm not a competitive player. Noticed the same thing too. Honestly, this game is half assed. A serious rebuild from ground up with no EA is what DICE needs to do. This game's foundation is completely broken.
Bro, I used to play BF2 all the time, lots of what you are saying is like gained knowledge from anyone who has played the game long enough and online. Simply amazing write up though. Thanks for that.
It made me laugh when he was talking about rockets one-shotting you, as if that's a bad thing. It's a high risk, high reward weapon that is easy to see coming and to avoid, but if it hits you, you are screwed. Realistically, it makes sense.
The unique maps are why people like the old game. Also, the galactic conquest gamemode. Why didn't they add it into the new game? It was literally the best game mode for playing with friends
