A detailed 3D animation of the Eclipse-class Dreadnought 1 and 2. Enjoy!
The Eclipse-class Super Star Destroyer was a class of Imperial Super Star Destroyer manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards and mainly used around six years after the Battle of Endor.
Prior to the rise of the first order, by volume, the Eclipse was one of the largest warships ever built. The Eclipse-class vessels were among the largest dreadnought-scale ships/Super Star Destroyers ever to be fielded within Galactic history.
In addition to its firepower, the Eclipse-class's hull armor and shields were so strong that it could ram enemy ships without hesitation.
The Eclipse-class was more mobile than the Death Star, being equipped with both an enhanced hyperdrive and fast sublight engines. Encased in a jet-black durasteel, the immense ship was said to be the deadliest capital ship in the galaxy.
Because of its powerful technological and psychological weapon, the eclipse was almost unstoppable and was built as a flagship for Palpatine.

It appears to be a common failing in movie and tv sci fi to design huge ships with their tiny bridge right at the top instead of deep inside the ship surrounded by armour and shields. This is a throwback to naval design. These ships are not at sea, they are in space. So there is no need for the captain to be able to see with his own eyes where the ship is going. The captain of a submarine steers underwater without seeing what is ahead of his sub so a spaceship captain should be able to do so as well.

I have thought this myself. But for asthetical reasons, the ships need to look more like naval ships, practicality and logic in fantasy is minimal in respect to physics and reality. Only in ultra realistic sci-fi like The Expanse would one see what ships would really look like and function.

Yeah, it really does, I think it would have been better to implement multiple bridges in capital ships. That way if one is taken out, then power can be switched to another in a more protected area in the ship making it better suited for battle and a deadlier foe. Of course, I understand the Empire not doing this as Palpatine believed he had the war in the palm of his hand. Now it seems like this would have been an extremely good idea for the Rebel Alliance, especially on the Mon Calamari capital ships.

Why would we want to see It in movies if as they always do screwing up everything they would just destroy the ship in the same movie through the most ridiculous way possible like we’ve already seen with Droid Command ship, Executor Superdestroyer, both Death Stars, Starkiller Base, Supremacy ship and basically every time they show some kind of an all-new cool superweapon ?

I'll be frank I both love and hate this thing. The Eclipse has always radiated low key edgelord fanfiction oc vibes to me. It's even bigger than Super Star Destroyers, it has a giant scythe like fin at its tip, it's jet-black with red engine exhausts, it can fire a planet destroying weapon nearly as powerful as the Death Star's, it's the cloned-in-a-young-body Emperor's personal ship. It's just so over the top and "my ship is the biggest and bestest ever with EVERYTHING!" that it's utterly obnoxious. I mean, look at it, it looks like a big Star Destroyer taped to a finger claw and painted black and red, it's absurd. If Shadow the Hedgehog were personified into a starship it would look like this. However all of that said, I still kind of love it. lol It absolutely can be made fun of and should be but its so over the top edgy that its kind of charming. Plus the idea of a reflectively black ship in space is one we don't see enough of because that would look intimidating. Plus its Star Wars so spectacle itself has its place in it maybe a bit more than other sci fi. Hey, edgy is fun can't deny it. Great animation for the video.

I have felt the same way about the eclipse. But honestly that ship really pales im comparison to the edgy cringe that the newer movies have given us; thousands of star destroyers that each have a laser to destroy planets (something the eclipse couldnt really do). A death star 3 that is even more powerful and can hit multiple targets. and the supremacy that even dwarfs the eclipse xd. suddenly it aint all too bad

I always considered the Eclipse much larger than the official 17500 meters given. The Eclipse was already 17.5 km when the Executor was still stated at only 8 km in length then retconned to 19 km. This would have scaled the Eclipse to almost 40 km, which would have got with Palpatine's ego, philosophy of rule by fear and intimidation and be big enough to house a improved death star single beam superlaser component weapon. No way would the Emperor have a shorter vessel than Vader or his Admirals even if it did have more mass. He HAD to have the biggest stick, it might have even been planned to be a Anti Death Star weapon if Vader or military commanders took control of it. The Eclipse was the one ship capable of crippling or even destroying it.

The Eclipse Star Dreadnaught is almost identical to the First Order Resurgent Class Star Destroyers in appearance and design the only difference between the 2 classes was the underside of the Eclipse class that had that huge wedge shape at the front of the bow.

Nice video, I like the tie fighter fly-by. For some reason I got the impression that Resurgent star destroyer assets were used to superimpose the main dorsal and ventral hulls. The Essential vehicle guide gives a better outlined proportion of the hull and angles. I know they're based on the comics, but that was the initial reference. On a separate note, I think the scaling should be different. Personally I felt the Eclipse was only supposed to be rivaled in size by the Death Star (which some say the DS2 should be 900km diameter based on the curvature angle when the Executor crashed into it). I don't think the Supremacy should be bigger than the Eclipse. Oh how Disney ruined it lol. So should the Eclipse be 70km+ ??

Yes, it is based on a Resurgent class design, really meant to save me some time on modeling really. When I was done with the rendering, I was having second thoughts on the design since it really kind of didn't resemble the Eclipse original design but was pressured on time to have the animation done in a timely manner.

@@jppj3278 Death Star 2's attempted scale was a combo of horizon curvature (basically none existent - it's a flat model) plus comparison to Endor's diameter (variable - 11.5 to 30 times smaller) and an assumption of how large Endor had to be. The equatorial trench height estimate allows a minimum of 160 km, but likely bigger, depending how the small hangars are scaled, so 270 km is feasible. But evidence to get it up as high as 900 km is very variable. That said, an old model maker's comment from ILM did hint it was meant to be 'like 500 miles' at one point. Actually the Death Stars are Capital Ships. They are fully mobile with hyperdrives and even carry Regular Star Destroyers inside the Death Stars themselves.

2:00 whilst I LOVE that someone has decided to review this ship, I sadly must point out an error. Source material clearly refers to the eclips as being TEN miles (16,000m) in length, not 11… I find the model interesting as well, as pre disney abolishment of such ships from lore, we never get a hugely clear look at the surface textures of the ship, and as much as I am not a fan of the Disney era designs, I do find the details of the dorsal surface interesting in that it appears like a first order ship is embedded in it

Has to weigh more than 600000 tonnes. A Nimitz Class carrier weighs 100000 tonnes and is (only) 1000ft long with a crew of around 5000. The Eclipse is 57 times longer and a crew 20 times larger. Seawise Giant supertanker (the largest ship ever built) was 1500ft long and weighed nearly the same as the Eclipse when she was fully laden (564000 tonnes).

It’s a shame that the Eclipse class was not more widely used, similar to the subjugator class of the CIS the ships would have had great potential and opportunities in fleet warfare but they existed for a short amount of time

Originally the Executor was listed as 8 kilometers or so instead of 19, so the Eclipse was intended to be double the length plus a bit more. If that scale was kept it should be around 41 kilometer or so in length. A BIG BOI! But it’s size was never altered…

I was always led to understand that, _originally,_ the Eclipse utterly dwarfed the Executor, in a similar way to how the Executor dwarfs X-Wings, but that the sizes were later retconned to be those that you state here, in your video! 🤷🏻‍♀️

The original size given for the executor was rather arbitrary. If you look at it in comparison to Imperial-class Star destroyers in the films, is easy to see it's far longer than 8km ( which would be equal to the length of only five star destroyers). I did the math when I was a kid, and I knew something wasn't right, that it didn't match what I say on screen. I'm glad they retconned it to being 19km long.

After rendering the 3D animation, I was having a second thoughts on the overall design since it didn't stay true to the comic book's original design, however, I didn't have enough time re-model and re-rendering the animation due to my weekly schedule.

And I hope this didn’t come off as a criticism, I actually appreciate that you put alot of effort into your design and it was a pretty interesting concept that personally I never even thought of. The eclipse is my favorite ship even tho the lack of details makes it kinda look like a big dumb oil tanker sometimes lol but seeing the details sort of reminded why I appreciate the power of it simple but daunting black silhouette. It was technically unstoppable. It was only destroyed because of Palpatines force storms. You could throw any weapons at it and you wouldn't dent it. Only thing capable of killing it would be the death star.

it is clearly the result of a few and even bad ideas. the addition of a forward fin weighs down the design, already perfect (by the way) of the imperial ships in the shape of a dagger like the executor. Great video.....but this is HALFSCREEN.....so a video without any interior designs and shots is lame, tbh....just like any other video out there. Was hoping to see some internal shots man.....

What ticks me off about the bull crap disney trilogy is they made a star destroyer (the Xyston-class Star Destroyer) that could destroy a planet. This star destroyer was much smaller in scale than the eclipse by a huge margin yet still had a reactor that generated enough power to fire a planet destroying super laser. Such a thing shouldn't be possible for a ship that size. The only star destroyer that came close to the destructive power of the Death Star was the Eclipse and it's super laser was only one third as powerful as one of the super laser beam shafts that made up the primary super laser. At maximum power, the only real damage Eclipse could do to a target planet was crack the crust, rather than destroy a planet outright. If they had kept the Supremacy in the third movie and reveal that it housed a super laser with the same power output as the Eclipse, that would have been more believable.

The fin is for ramming other ships. So I guess it has a purpose. Otherwise, I would agree, that it is unattractive.

It was a way cooler, proper 'keel' in the original comic and essential guide to vessels art - way more credible for ramming. Not to mention the whole ship was wider, and bulkier, than this image.

So...yeah...a multi-kilometer-long ship...to do something you can accomplish with a Vulture Droid and a spare hyperdrive. And it's not even a decent combat ship, to boot. Not just not good...but not even mediocre. It's only advantage is mass, and that's not much of an advantage. Super idea...
