Star Wars Galaxies in 2023.. Its Basically the Golden Age

The original profession system remains unique in my experience, even after all this time. Scrapping it was the worst mistake for Sony to make.

SWG was my first mmorpg. Fell in love immediately. I still miss it.

Just started playing, my only regret is I wasn't alive to experience this when it first came out.

SWG is one of those games that actually gets better the more people are around unlike other mmo's that are basically single player games with other people running around in them that often just get in your way.

My time as a creature handler all those years ago are frozen in my memory. The soundtrack, the sound effects, and the fond memories of my city joining together for parties, celebratiosn, and even real life weddings being celebrated the same day as a group online... what a treasure this game was and continues to be. Thanks for sharing more about this glorious experience. I'd love to experience a near live game experience again with even double what the current populations on the SWGEmu servers offer.

Love this game! The combat upgrade killed it for me. May have to join this version. Need more of this ! Yes, Jedi back in the OG game were amazing. There had to be hundreds of us outside Coronet spaceport and 1 Jedi running around just laughing.

I played soooo many hours of the space stuff in the Jump to Lightspeed expansion. I was always baffled how SWG did space combat a thousand times better than SWTOR.

Should be very fun and interesting to see Shack making more videos on this game. It's amazing to see how this game survived thanks to the fans and much fun this game is.

Fond memories of this game, playing a Mon Cal Musician parked out in the Bestine cantina, chatting with people while my macroed flourishes ran. Like so many others the NGE killed it for me, but seeing that there are still fans playing after all this time is awesome.

Glad to see SWG getting some love. I'm gonna say for any people looking to get into SWG for the first time, you should probably checkout SWG Legends first. It's the most active server by miles, a difference between 1000+ at peak times and 100+ at peak times on other servers, and it's by and far the most developed and well maintained server available. I genuinely recommend it over any other server for people completely new to SWG, or even old players looking to come back. SWG isn't SWG without a big community to make it feel like the living universe it is.

I started playing this just before the major overhaul. It went from a wonderfully complex and fascinating game whereby you ultimately became what you do. Want to be a great pilot? Then do a lot of flying. I just remember being blown away by everything around me. Force users were a relatively rare sight (as opposed to everybody being a jedi/sith). I remember stopping to stare as a high level dark side force wielder rolled up and killed two guards with ease.

I don't understand why a successor based on the same scheme hasn't appeared long ago. Times have never been better for the Star Wars franchise! About the “Old Republic” Game from EA: People don’t want to play in an old republic that’s far removed from film. Could be an intersting subplot, not more. You want to enjoy cities, creatures and ships from the original series. The fact that EA didn't understand this back then is also a mystery to me. The time for a new Star Wars MMO is NOW!

I was huge into SWG back in the day. I would love to have an active guild in it again!

I loved this game. I had a couple of characters and a shared account. I had my 2 pc's running macros offering dancer & doctor buffs while I was at work. At one point, I had the best doctor buffs on the server that lasted 3+ hours. So many hours surveying planets and dropping harvesters. You could find a good spawn that lasted a week or just a few hours. Harvesting the right materials made millions. Always had the best resources for buffs, heals, armorsmith, weaponsmith, shipwright and got some nice gear making deals. Back in the day, the community would constantly updating the forums with stats and locations every time a resources spawn changed. So many good memories, even met my ex-girlfriend in game and we dated for years.. I still have 3 Facebook friends that I met playing over 15 years ago.,

The problem with the game is it is meant to be highly populated and filled with player generated content. Without people everywhere, it just feels empty.

You didn't even cover one of the best features of SWG, player housing and decorating. Every piece of junk can be dropped out of inventory into your house.

Damn, the memories.... "SWG" was the best MMORPG I've played, along with "City of Heroes".

Cool, last played "a long, long time ago" reached Master Doctor for the Empire loved it! Was the first MMOG I was up all night loving it until the combat upgrade hit leaving the Doctor profession useless as most of my time "when I was not out looking for supplies or just exploring" was most of the time hanging out in the Hospital on the Capital of Naboo or in my guilds base curing and buffing players. Please tell me that it's back to normal again and I will give it another go?

I think I started SWG right around the time immediately following the CU, but pre-NGE. It only lasted for a few months as you said. I played almost right up until the servers shut down. I did try and get on one of the player run servers a couple years ago, but just never found the time to sit down and actively play. Without my old guild mates to run around with, it just didn't feel the same. I do miss it though. Maybe one of these days I'll reinstall it and look for the Armco folks.

Loved my time as a shipwright. SO MANY HOURS getting there though, not sure I can handle doing it all over again. Gathering materials was a GRIND, yet I still remember it fondly.

Ah i remember our rebel base, I miss that time and having our city. It was a great time, also remember being chased by every living creature without no reason whatsoever lol 😂, it was like I would look at them and be chased by miles throughout our city lol.

Unpopular opinion, but that brief post-CU/pre-NGE era of the game was one of my favorite time frames. They were slowly, but surely working out the kinks of the professions and there was a fair amount of content. Shame thay they dumped it all for the NGE.

Played the first 2-3 years of when the game released:). loved it. My character: An imperial Wookie Bountyhunter that specialized in hunting down other wookies.....I did not have many fans lol

Also, this RU-vidr hasn't played on Legends in a long time from the comments they're making. Many areas don't allow macro grinding anymore, and anywhere with quest NPCs that people need to progress is required to allow grouping up or you can get in trouble for farming those NPCs and keeping people from doing their quests. The thing about the junk vendor is weird too, that's just what happens in a server with thousands of people playing, it's active lol

Space combat is like X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter because the same developers made the Jump to Lightspeed update for Star Wars Galaxies.

Yo! My biggest problem with galaxies back in the day was they added in Jedi! That's so cool that these guys are making it a more complex system to become one! I might have to look into this server...

the problem with these servers... all of them have so much inflation and devs that are incapable (to be fair it's a pretty hard task) of curbing that inflation since SWG really didn't have a way for it in the first place... that starting out... not knowing how to farm millions and millions of credits means you're never really gonna be part of it... PVP is not gonna be fun if i come with my fully kitted BH/CM and you have no way of doing any dmg to me while you die in 3 seconds... And besides just inflation... the big problem is Jedi.... in my opinion that was what killed SWG not wow or the cu or nge.... the whole economy collapsed because everyone was just going for Jedi the whole servers economy was focused around Krayt pearls back in the day...

Sure as long as you don't play mod messed up SwG Legends, I played from beta years before their self-proclaimed Legend. I raged out after they took a steaming dump on their own player base duo accounts which required proof of duo disc set ownership, eliminating some 60% of the server's trader accounts.

This game was way ahead of its time and at the same time way too hard for the main gamer. WOW took advantage of this and weeded out 80% of the players who just wanted to clik-kill-grin. Even after WOW it was still a great game. The devs then made the biggest mistake they could to get the players back. They made Jedi available as a selectable class. Before that it was a mistery how to become Jedi and there were no more than 3-5 Jedi per server. After this change you had thousands of jedi running around for 1 month and no one wanted to play any other class. Economy collapsed, most players went back to WOW after a month and the hardcore fans were fed up too.

I can't recommend empire in flames any more due to the abusiveness and toxicity of the staff there. It's a downright oppressive atmosphere. They DO NOT respect their players one bit. The mods and goodies on that server are super cool yet the population is dead... well I just told you why. The attitude from the dev team constantly cannibalizes its own population. When you were talking about the player suggestions thing it got me thinking about how poorly they treat any sort of player feedback on eif. They dont even have a dedicated channel for discussing the game or making suggestions or for new players to ask questions really. Theres also some odd choices that hold it back, like having a bagillion races and skills to choose from but keeping it limited to 3 character slots. They have an interesting GCW pvp system but the staff refuse to play with impartiality or work to create any type of balance. One faction dominates over the other and that means one side is having a miserable time, or they give up and everyone just stands around afk. They also make all sorts of changes to core gameplay stuff without properly documenting things. Sometimes I think the devs dont even know how certain things currently work. And as you mentioned in your review, very little worthwhile or rewarding content. If you just want to run around and solo loot theres not even anything good to do. Theres some big challenge world boss content but you need a full team of players which simply arent there. If the lead dev ever cleaned house of the toxic staff, and/or they collectively removed their heads from their rears and learned how to behave properly and professionally over there, it would be the best EMU server around, in my opinion. The skill system, the quality of life changes, all the little unique functions and mechanics... on a technical level they did some really smart things with the game that frankly SoE should have done in the past, and that other servers should emulate now. But, as it stands currently, on the human level, one finds that its a pretty toxic place to game when you scratch just barely beneath the surface. Better things can be done with your time than giving it to people that are going to disrespect you.

I've been playing on legends a lot to get used to the game so I can go on restoration and be better set, and I was watching your older videos on the game.

I see you have the your level in in the upper left, and the new Icons, but still have access to the extensive professions list of the original game but you said you were on SWG: legends? What is going on if you don't mind sharing?

I have ALWAYS wanted to play this but never had a pc capable.(still don't) I remember looking at the box at best buy and just wishing I could play. So if you want to upload more videos on this game would be pretty amazing for me.

This is still my favorite game of all time. SWG was a great time and I am playing some on resto now as well. I played the original game from the beta up until it was sunset in 2011. I unlocked Jedi in pre-cu and it was a ton of fun. The NGE made it a starting profession and I got a title, "Elder Jedi", a buff, a robe and a lightsaber crystal.. LOL!

Empire in Flames is my favorite server. Once JTL is in, in the future, I’ll be on just that one probably. Legends can be fun in bits, I play it super casually, but nge just is meh to me still. But restoration, much as I want to. I can’t get into, big thing is the guy who runs it, Aconite. And just some of the choices he’s made in the past and drama he’s caused. Might be different now but I don’t wanna waste my time with the possibility of it happening again. Seen and heard nothing good of him for so many years in my time in the SWG private server scene for many many years. SWG private servers die all the time due this crap, and a big reason as a whole for why I haven’t played much of any server for so many years now. Guilds, admins, etc, just so much drama and even if you avoid it, it can’t effect you in other ways with population, economy, etc. Will always love the game though, each era in some way, and play casually.

I remember this game so fondly. We had our rebel town on lok which was imp controlled. Our town hall had two large golden ball decorations either side of the steps named 'Kiss My Giant' and 'Golden Balls' respectively. I was distraught when they gutted the game and killed it

I had never played SWG but was always aware of it. Watching you play the last week or so convinced me to try Restoration. I'm pretty low but i've been enjoying it so far. I have yet to try space though. Trying to decide between Rebel and Imperial. I want to play a Stormtrooper, but the Y-wing is my favorite fighter, so I'm torn.

I unlocked my force sensitive slot on the original. The next day I could play was the day after NGE patch. What a lovely day. I got sick for about two weeks and when I could get back it was patch time.

Warning! For Empire in flames, you have to have an Original Copy of Galaxies. Not the demo, not a cracked version, an OG copy. You can still buy a digital version, but yeah I found that out earlier today.

what ended Galaxies for me was how they destroyed the PVE experience when they started copying WoW and focusing on PvP too much. They made it so we went from feeling like powerful characters that could fight (and tame) Rancors... to being knocked off of my speeder and killed in one it from a freaking Mokk Caveman! I remember needing 20 people to even go into the Sandpeople camp. Total joke. If they have a server where you can actually feel like a Star Wars hero in PvE again I would be all in in a second.

i remember, during the golden days of playing the game, I was...a bounty hunter or something on Tatooine and like something happen out oh no where the empires theme was playing and like other END game bounty hunters and imp officers storm troopers etc., just all came out and there was a rare Jedi on the planets and he became hunted it was huge and it's a gaming moment that will and has stuck with me because it wasn't coded, there was just so happen a player Jedi (before you could just be one) there and the imps were like oh hell no and everyone and there brother showed up to hun this Jedi. just was soooo cool.

they also killed this game the day they cattered to the babies and allowed everyone to just become a jedi so easily....i remember getting my elder robe as a reward. so insulting. killed the game do to politics

when SWG was live and i was playing i was out exploring and got to close to a Krayt Dragon and was being chased by it another player ran past me and i thought ok he is dead then i hear it the unique Hum of a light saber turned around and watched as he soloed it. That was the first time i had seen a Jedi on the server it was VERY impressive it is something i hope i never forget. and this was at a time when you had to master EVERY class to unlock the path to become a Jedi so i knew that player had spent a lot of time in game.

Would love to see him CREATE a mission using the Chronicle system.

Back in the day when I was shown the gsme by a friend I wanted to play a rifleman with terrain speed buffs so i could shoot while running to stay out of range but keep them in my temendously long range. I heard when the first jedi was spotted in the game. But i was never able to get into it. Now that l know the gamss accessable im gonna jump in. :) Better late than never i guess.

Lmao, the combat upgrade was actually starting to bring elements of it's scattered skill system together in a meaningful way. I remember for the brief time the CU was active, I was a smuggler/pistoleer and my role in my guild raids was to snare nightsisters on dathomir while we killed rancors or something like that. CU had potential., but they nuked it with the NGE not long after it was implied. I was playing for all of it, absolutely feels now like I was living through the MMORPG equivalent of Pearl Harbor

Wow What a flashback. I probably spent a year of my life in the cantinas getting entertainer buffs & healing I was a Wookiee, very dark furred, named Grimilla. I remember how shocked I was when I finally found Chewbacca in game. He was so small!

Really wanted to check this out, it's a shame you can't purchase digitally, even on the website it says you have to purchase on eBay, that's insane. Guess I'm just gonna have to stick to Empire at War.

My father played Galaxies during part of my childhood and was always enamored with the game. I was heartbroken when I learned that it closed down. Now that I'm actually able to play the game I'm very excited that there are private servers keeping the game alive.

I loved galaxies so much to menut was the ultimate MMORPG, there's things we had that still haven't been bettered.

I used to love you would need to go into the cantina at the end of the day to have a dancer heal your character's fatigue and then grab some health buffs from a doctor outside on the out.

Restoration is GARBAGE. It was the worst release of any server I’ve played on. The server was so broken the email system didn’t work. And players were left unable to log in on their dead locked server because these fools promoted tf out of it and ONLY got a server that allowed 150-200 players on at a time. Then they lied about it.

LOVE the Homeworld soundtrack in the background! I nearly wore that bonus CD out when I was like 12 or 13.

good to see its still up. i had some nice hours in the game while it was live. i miss it badly but i leave it as it is.

Empire In Flames it's THE BEST server. Yes, it's heavily modified, thank the Force for that but it makes sense. You want to have scout skills for example, you choose Novice Ranger directly. You start out with all of the Master Scout's skills. Why is that important ? Because you start out with some experience under your belt, instead of a newborn baby with 0 skills. Everything has been reworked so it makes sense.

The profession system and having to earn your jedi slot is what made this agme good.

EIF if a phenomenal server but the owner is a nut job who bottle necks his own server with no Jedi. However it’s got a LOT of crazy good QOL features.

Holstering weapons and they show on your belt or your back, it's a HUGE thing. Never liked going to the cantina, seeing every idiot standing, trying to look tough while still wearing a full armor set and hugging their big ass rifles. I was a Master Rifleman and had one of the most bigass rifles in the game, the T-21. But after the fighting you want some R&R. Cantina and Medical Center. So, i used to switch to regular clothing and stow my weapons. No need to look like Robocop at all times.

SWG was the final MMO I ever played. I was so addicted to the crafting system and loved the space combat. I spent so much time with it though that I eventually realized that once it was gone I probably shouldn't play another MMO.

This will be in my top 25 games forever for sure. Ah, the times I went into bigger cities with 1 fps. Hell, it wasn't even 1 fps, it was like 1 frame per every 10 seconds. But I loved it so much. I was 11 or something? I tried one of the emus a few years ago. Might try it again.

I see all these Star wars games from ps1/ps2 era like phantom menace , bounty hunter, jedi knight; old battlefront etc re -released and now available on ps store to buy and play on ps5 , why cant they remaster SWG, rework it for consoles and PC - it would be very popular even now for sure.

Man, i bought the game around a month after release and tried to install it and my computer screamed and jumped out the window :( havent touched it since and it sucked because the game looked amazing. All afk'ers shouldnt be allowed to exist, i dont care the profession. If you dont want to stand there and watch your toon dance to heal others just leave and do something else.

NGE was AAAAAWFUL.

I hate that you need the actual discs to play this fan rerelease. Do you know how much people are charging for those?

Star Wars Galaxies has the potential to be bigger if not as big as Eve Online and yet Disney is working on woke BS. Disney sucks. They dumber than Patrick Star from Spongebob.

Jedis in the vanilla game were few, far in between and powerful. In NGE, they are just a run of the mill class, like any other class. nothing special about them.

If only we had the source code for the galaxies client, so that some coders could add modern directx and 64bit support aswell as modern shader effects through dlls. After the NGE server code leak years ago the entire SWG emulation scene really got a boost, but sadly we are still limited by the archaic client which doesnt even support dx9 if I am not mistaken, its something around dx7 or 8 with shader model 1.2 or some crap :/ Imagine being able to rewrite some part of the client so it allows for loading in modern textures and meshes with more polygons. I am sure that the modding scene would explode with people modelling very good new models to replace some of the old stuff. implementing modern graphics effect like nvidia realtime GI, nicer shader effects and such... aw man, if only one of the old devs would still have the NGE client source code somewhere in his workbench and accidentally dropped it so someone from the community would ACCIDENTALLY stumble upon it...

I remember reading that you could go about your life or join a side fighting an ongoing npc military tug of war which is great idea, doesnt have to be player created you just saddle up and join in if you like.

I joined one of the largest STG private servers (Legends), and still every player build city is long abandoned, and the only populated places are cantinas and the surrounding city block. I'm really disappointed I missed out on this game in the height of its population

The crafting was so unique because the quality was not static. Players scouring planets testing the available resources before setting up player built extractors. Once the resources were exhausted or a better source located, the extractor fields would be disassembled or 'fade' after a set amount of time without maintenance. Introducing player Jedi to this time frame destroyed the player built economy since everything beyond the most basic items for beginners was player made. To 'unlock' your Jedi you had to master 3 of the available professions without a clue to which they were. Players were grinding professions and all the 'stores' and contacts one had for your profession's items was tossed to the wind. Everything made was low level junk made just to level XP instead of provide a community with a 'real' experience.

I'm so glad I'm seeing this now but really mad I didn't see this last year when this was posted I really want to get into this game I used to watch my brother play this game back in the day b4 jedi ruined the game right b4 WOW came out
