Fun fact, the Back Half of the “Invisible Hand” landed on top of someone’s restaurant. Once the Republic removed all the military hardware and reactors the owner bought what was left and turned it into a New Restaurant.
@@fredlandry6170 The Venator I found to be a very Mary sue ship so it was honestly my least favorite of all the ships It's a carrier Front line Heavy cruiser AND a command ship
@@carlosgutierrez3918 and it gets destroyed 24/7 it was never meant to be a frontline ship but it had to since the republic didnt have any other decent warships at the time, at least until the victory class came along
Luchrehulk battleship conversion is my personal favorite, but the Providence is a close second. But if you wanted to keep the Republic away from something, you drop a Luchrehulk or two in front of it, and enjoy turning the Republic Navy into a debris field.
@@magisterrleth3129 and thats why I like the CIS Navy. The fleet felt like it was meant to fulfill roles and had strengths and weaknesses that made them interesting. It has structure and was well organized Whereas the Republic just threw a bunch of space doritos at a problem and left it to their CO's to figure out that mess
Fun Fact: The humming sound you hear when one of those ships is nearby was inspired by WW1 german Zeppelins and was supposed to add to the threatening appearance
Well ILM put everything including the kitchen sink into those shots so they're really amazing quality even by today's standards as they took the time to get them right, often with bad CGI (or CGI that just didn't age as well) the problem more often then not is that there was not enough time for it.
I actually saw this in the theatre (I rarely go) it was really impressive, one of the best large space battles I've seen on any movie, So awesome! That dreadnaught is such a cool design.
@@DIEGhostfish I don't recall if there's any distinction made in canon or is that just a fanon explanation for the fact Providence suffers from the "Bird-of-prey" syndrome (named after the Klingon Bird of Prey from Star Trek that was infamous for constantly changing size from as low as 50 meters or below to over 1000 meters).
@@SampoPaalanen Essential guide to Warfare made it an in-universe distinction. And I think the same for the big Recusant variant too. But none for Big Munificent I think.
@@CantankerousDave actually Skywalker is quite a common name on Coruscant, it just means pilot in High Galactic. How do you think Luke was able to just hide on Tatooine unnoticed?
I think they're all pretty good, fairly similar shapes in their designs that makes them stand out from most other ships. Except that ugly sphere supply ship thing, that's ugly. - hoojiwana from Spacedock
Yup and the Venators main guns fired their bolts staggered so that the first bolt pierced the shields and the second bolt got fired a microsecond later thus it would go through the hole in the shield the first bolt made and hit the hull.
I would've like to hear mention of one of its more prominent (get it) variants of the class, that being the larger version of the dreadnaught. The most notable example was the Invincible used by Admiral Trench. The ship keausred over 2km long and over half a dozen times the size of the Invisible Hand. Apparently after the Invincible was destroyed by Skywalker, modules of the ship were used during the Imperial era to build a Providence for the rebellion.
That ship only exists because of a poorly unformed Disney book which is unfortunately considered canon. In The Clone Wars, it is obvious that none of the Providence class warships are actually of this double size variant.
@@nialltomy15 well whether or not the book made a mistake, Trenches ship (or the model asset used) in the show is in fact larger, so I take that to be true.
The acceleration of 2500G is equivalent to increasing your ship's velocity by 25 kilometers per second. Every second. With this we can easily infer that the Providence, and by extent most ships with engines of similar capabilities (I believe most Star Wars capital ships have this kind of acceleration) can literally transit from Earth to the moon (estimated 300000km) in less than three minutes. Within the context of Star Wars, the opportunity for these ships to engage one another, given weapons consistently have 100km range or less, is mere milliseconds. And that is being very generous. Basically, it makes no sense. That is, unless I'm horribly mistaking what the term "G" means in Star Wars.
It's one of those weird uses of numbers that make no sense. Every ship in Star Wars wiki has its own numbers, all absurd. Power of turbolasers are measured in gigatons, which in reality would mean each bolt fired could delete a country. I just ignore the numbers.
I get the impression stats like that in Star Wars are literally just whatever made up thing sounds cool and impressive. Nothing wrong with that of course, Star Wars isn't exactly hard sci-fi. - hoojiwana from Spacedock
"The Invisible Hand" sounds ominously Sith at first, but then it occured to me that the name is more of a Free Market Economics reference, due to it being Nute Gunray's flagship. Trade Federation being for laissez-faire market and all
Just as I reading the Tarkin book, where the background of this ship was being explained, this comes out. Don't worry Spacedock everything was on point. Great work as always!
@@Dustman5917 tarkin by James luceno. ( wonderful , audiobook especially) but remember in clone wars episode ( cat and mouse) ? The wreckage or salvaged vessel played a prominent role . Well it mentioned along with thousands of Confederat vessels after the shut down order in episode 3
The Separatist Dreadnought would have been great for Rebels. Why wouldn’t they just salvage some parts of it. They could have made improvements to their hyperdrive system
Way too easy to hunt down by star destroyer squadrons, defeating the whole decentralized rebellion gig. Probably best not to put all the eggs in one incredibly expensive to run basket salvaged from a boneyard.
The point where the Rebels could safely and efficiently operate multiple capital ships was probably long after most Separatist ships were broken down or otherwise irreparable.
8:47 The maneuver that X-wing performs is only viable in an atmosphere, due to the drag and gravity acting on the craft, but is iconic to "diving" made popular by WWII movies.
They explain that in-universe by having a sort of “dark fluid” around in space that the ships maneuver through, allowing them to fly in space the same way they would in atmosphere. Also, it’s Star Wars. Space magic literally exists, so we just accept things that shouldn’t make sense like that.
The front half of the ship "safely landed" by the Jedi ? I'd think it could be said more accurately as having been "safely crashed" on the surface of Correscant, especially given,.. it was only half of a ship vs an entire ship.
Makes one wonder why ships designed to be manned by droids had such spacious corridors designed for humans and such small compliments of both dismounts and strike craft... especially since for droids former and latter are the same and unlike with human pilots, you don't need hangars, crew quarters and other dead weight, droids can just latch to the hull outside in the thousands or even tens of thousands.
That would make for a logical conclusion, but I would think it to be a more flexible design to have such large spaces for operation, as not only might you need to house thousands of organic individuals (given the circumstance), but droid personnel might be more easily transported through said corridors, that is if mechanical transport of this personnel fails during battle or may become inoperable through other means. Certainly, this point can be expanded upon, but having these logistical passageways can certainly allow for more design consideration in encountering circumstance.
As the video explains at 1:59, the ship was originally designed to be crewed by organics. Other vessels in the Separatist Navy however, such as the Munificent and the Recusant, were designed with droid crews in mind from the start and therefore had a much more skeletal appearance.
@@GaldirEonai not in a way we've seen them in Revenge of the Sith or in animated series. And even then you don't actually need it for droids. You don't need pressurized hangar the length of a runway to replace droid parts. You just need another droid that does it outside. That's what astromechs do. Droids don't need heating or air or crew quarters.
Hi Guys, I was curious if you’d consider doing the ARV from Wall-E, or maybe the Axiom. That’s one of my favorite movies and it would be awesome to see a breakdown of those ships. Thanks :)
Wait so the normal "cruiser" variant is actually labeled as "dreadnought"? That must be confusing when they are referring to the much larger version. I though the "glass" in star wars ships was a type of see through metal and not actually glass (cause having that in space would be insanely stupid). Which would then raise the question of how G-man managed to "shatter" armor with a electro staff.
Some errors with this video Firstly, the Providence has 2 types, the Dreadnought is one of them, but the other is a Cruiser/Destroyer variant. The former is a 2 Kilometer long behemoth often used by the most prestigious of the Confederate Admiralty, Trench's personal flagship is one such example. The latter is a more main line capital ship, whilst not nearly as common as the Dreadnought, was by no means rare to see in larger numbers, as it was effectively the CIS counterpart to the Venator, and could be seen in direct combat rather than C&C Flagship duty fairly often.
This has always been one of my favorite Star Wars designs. Well rounded, powerful, and beautifully designed. I am amazed the CIS didn't roll the Republic. Sidious had a perfect plan. if the CIS somehiw won, he ruled through them. If the Republic won, he ruled as chancellor and eventually Emperor
Oh man that thing is so awful. I mean, nothing in Star Wars is especially good, though just about everything in Star Trek is considerably worse, and most other sci-fi are pretty equally bad...but this thing is just one of the crappiest combat ships in Star Wars. Almost all sci-fi ships are just fine...as art pieces. But in most of the roles for which they were supposedly designed, they're beyond trash...particularly in combat roles.
Fun Fact: the tall watch tower was called the Wizards Tower. Out if universe this is a nod to Count Dooku being in this tower when we first see these ships and his actor also play the evil wizard Sauraman in Lord Of The Rings
The cis has a military I would use. Only with minor changes. Such as the aat being completely swapped out and an atmospheric version of vulture Droid. I'd also remove the guns on the side of the ship used for the broad side close range fighting and add an array of spaced, Composite and explosive reactive armor. And the Creme de la Creme large ww2 cruiser style cannons (either kinetic or turbo lasers). While im at it, I may as well make a battle ship version of it. Something with Iowa style guns.
I love the choice of quotation. If there's a sequel (or a video on safely crash-landing ships), you need to find somewhere to use "Another happy landing".
Anakin: Master, Gen.Greivous ship is just right ahead the one with crawling droid Obi-wan: Oh I see it, this one is gonna be easy.....Oddball form your squads behind me... Oddball: Roger that Gen.Kenobi, you heard the General form squad behind the General
The Providence class was more of a battleship than a carrier/destroyer given it’s armament, armor and overall design, the “Dreadnaught” variants fit the class of battleship than a dreadnaught Admiral Trench’s ship the Invincible is the only TRUE dreadnaught variant, given not just its size but larger armament and armor/ versatility If they dedicated more resources and research they could have improved the structural integrity and improve the weapon systems and design flaws like the forward mounted bridge or the to exposed Broadside cannons The Confederacy could have used the Providence better in the clone wars
New Canon or the Star Wars I actually like it doesn't matter. Always ignore actual numbers in Star Wars. They never make sense. Most are inconsistent and impossibly large. I love the series but this is one thing it's always just not gotten right. Ship sizes, numbers of guns and troops and crew. It's just silly.
The CIS is basically the ultimate representation of what a fully automated military makes the dismissal of many technical and financial burdens including size not just affordable but desirable
had Battlezone II mp3 playing on my ipod (old ipod 80 gig still working) in my car and then i realise: wait this is Spacedock Theme... and look into the video descriptive, yep it is.
Thank you in advance Very happy you made this video to Providence class it's my favorite capital ship of all Star wars specifically the larger variant (not the variant that's the Invisible hand is) spend a couple years since someone's made a video of this Ship
