People always wondered what Palpatine's motivation for a Death Star was, when all of the things he intended for it to accomplish could have been done (as Thrawn once suggested) by a big ol' "spank you" fleet of ships. - ahem - * points to video above *
Probably the only way to beat Thrawn: Confronting him with a completely unforseen situation for which he had no plans at all. The Bendu was completely outside his calculations.
No offence to the Haters out there... but THIS is something Thrawn could never have predicted or anticipated, even on his best day. The Force is a wild card Thrawn can never predict or anticipate (hence why in Legends, he had an Ysalamir on him at all times)
Before Season 3 had aired, I suspected that Maul might become the canon counterpart of Joruus C'baoth, possibly fulfilling the same role of being an insane Force-wielder who allies with Thrawn to fulfill his own personal agenda. But unfortunately, the events of Twin Suns sort of shuts down my theory, which means I now have to look for alternatives. For the time being, I'm leaning towards a surviving Barriss Offee or a clone of Count Dooku as my top two choices (I'm saying cloned, as if to mirror Joruus' status as a clone of the original Jorus C'baoth).
Simple really, have Thrawn survive Rebels (which he does btw, it is confirmed) and then have him return in a new show set after episode 6 depicting the adventures of Han, Luke, Leia and Chewbacca (which is the perfect opportunity to essentially do a prequel to the new trilogy AND give us stuff like Mara, Joruus, Thrawn being a badass+ his death at the hand of the Noghri etc)
If the Bendu appeared to any other Imperial, they would run, and hide, in fear. Thrawn deduces that there is someone else controlling it, and orders his units to fire on its most likely position. What a badass.
@Catman-du Bendu wanted to remain in solitude. He didn't want Kanan coming back either. If he willed it that Kanan or Thrawn would die, they would have died.

Thrawn's defeat makes perfect sense, actually: he might be a brilliant Tactician, but his main weakness is that the factors he either doesn't know about or expect are his downfall. His EU death highlighted that. The Bendu is something he'd never even heard of, and he had no way of knowing about it to begin with. So it makes perfect sense that the Bendu would catch him off guard. Besides, this could be what causes him to seek out the canon version of Ysalamiri in the first place.
It wasn't a defeat, he just wasn't able to kill as much of the Rebels. He even beat the Bendu(which seems pretty dumb, the Bendu can fly, but decides to remain stationary when he's getting shot).
Yeah, it was definitely a victory for Thrawn. All you need to look at is the ships the Phoenix Squadron had before the episode started, and after. Before: Two or Three Nebulon-Bs, a Quasar-Carrier, four Hammerheads, two Dornean Gunships, six or seven Gallofrees and about three Corellian Corvettes. After? Two Hammerheads and a Corellian Corvette. Yeah, that's a crippled fleet right there.
I thought the same thing, I was like wow James Earl Jones voices the wrong Star Wars character, it would've been awesome to hear the Mufasa voice coming out of Bendu in that scene
@@Infernal460 the Bendu clearly didn't give two shits when Thrawn shot him point blank, I think it's fair to say he's still enjoying his life in one form or another.
This is another of the endless reasons I love Thrawn, 90% of the other imperial commanders encountering Bendus force storm would instantly turn tail and run. But when Thrawn ordered his forces to concentrate fire on it his troops immediately followed opened fire despite taking losses

LordDarthHarry better try than accept your fate, he had no time to get to a transport and there was a storm throwing down lightning bolts even if there was nothing he could've done he still would try, that's like saying there's a monster that's bulletproof coming to kill you and your squad, odds are you'd still shoot hoping that it isnt COMPLETELY bulletproof
When i saw this scene i thought there is a ship from where the light is coming. And that that ship has a device to manipulate weather. Never knew Jedi could do that😅.
Let's give Thrawn credit for quickly sizing up the situation and choosing the appropriate counter-tactic. He isn't just a genius planner, he also improvises very well.
In one of the books, there were a few times where Darth Vader brought up this moment as a way to kinda throw failure in Thrawn's face. He had never heard of the Bendu and just referred to it as "the creature", and seemed like he didn't even believe Thrawn was telling the truth, considering the only reports were those of either Thrawn himself or his personal (fiercely loyal) death trooper guard. It kinda sucks, but it's a reminder that even a guy like him isn't immune to failure...but it is comforting to know that he's only really been beaten when confronted with jedi force nonsense
Interestingly, apparently Palpatine didn't hold it against Thrawn like Vader did. I guess Palpatine's seen enough weird shit to go "Force Monster showed up out of nowhere and started zapping your Walkers? Yeah, I'd buy it. Not your fault, man. Happens to the best of us."
lol no. The show is pretty poorly written as he says, but then it is a kids show. Only insecure children call someone a dumbass for making a non-inflammatory funny comment. One day you'll grow up, but apparently it isn't today.
the writer of the thrawn trilogy actually advised the writers this season on how they should handle thrawn. Timothy zahn said that he believed that they did a good job.
Let's just take a moment to appreciate that not only was Thrawn presented by a logical impossibility completely outside of his calculations, potentially the only scenario in which he can be beaten, but he held true in the face of it and decided to bring down an insanely powerful Force Entity anyway. Mad respect.
I love how In this when bendu says “I am the light” and “I am the dark” it focuses on kanen and thrawn, both being parts of each side of the force the bendu represents. he is the light side, but has no commitments or promises. He is the dark, but has no hate or ambition. (I know the last part contradicts the angry bendu scene, but think before you speak) and while he’ll use both, rarely one more than the other, he’d never take a side as he would always oppose the other, and be taken into the ways which he deems as flawed and unnecessary.
I knew Filoni and the other writers and story group wouldn't waste Thrawn, but I was still fearing for his life in this scene. The way they set it up made it seem like he'd fall into the classic "villain overestimates his power" trap. So happy with the way it played out.
@@WalkerRileyMC I didn't think he was wasted. Maybe not used to his full potential, but they can still do that in future stories. Both he and Ezra are still alive in the unknown regions after all. Lars Mikkelsen is even reprising his role as Thrawn in live-action in the Ahsoka series and Mena Massoud, who played Aladdin in the live-action remake, is gonna play Ezra.
@@peteryeeterson5766 Well, Mena isn't playing Ezra after all. Eman Esfandi will play him in Ahsoka. But it does look like Lars Mikkelsen will reprise the role in live-action, which I'm very happy about, because his Thrawn voice is fantastic and he's a great screen actor as well.
I love how Thrawn like stops to survery the situation he's in before he scrams he's like; "well...it looks like this appears to be a, uh, talking storm. Okay then. Time to gtfo."
It’s an indication that he leans very much to the Dark Side than the Light. He is greatly offended by Kanan telling him that he’s a coward for hiding from the Empire (in which he’s right), which means that this creature which stands in the 'morally grey area' is prideful, a Dark Side trait. Then here he tells the people he’s firing at to flee, and continues to fire at them, which is exactly what a dark sider would do.
One thing to remember about Bendu traditionally in the Star Wars Universe was that they did not believe in the supremacy of light or dark. They believed in Balance. Jedi as a term actually originated from a Bendu word Jeh'daii which meant "moving center" referring to the capability of keeping once balance (emotionally as well as physically) while moving or taking action.
+Lich Coin Did it, though? I mean, he stopped Bendu's rampage, but that was as good as ramming a ship against Cthulhu's head. That laugh after the end of their conversation suggests to me Bendu did not die. Heck, CAN he die is the question!
2:55, damn. That poor A-Wing pilot who got fried because Kanan pissed off the Bendu. It's one thing to get shot down by the Empire, but to get fried by a lightening spewing, chaotic neutral Force creature because a Jedi mouthed off at him?
Samuraiedge2 they're supply/transport carriers. They're not attack vessels which is why they're always flanked by xwings or light cruiser. But unfortunately it also means they're normally the first targets for Imps.
Go check out the MetaNerdz video on those transports. They have signal jamming, enough supply capacity to build a temporary base, be used as a base, and some rather creative shield usage, and more.
The transport ships also serves as troop carriers for them to live in, as well as storage for cargo. Rebel carriers aren’t big enough to store the transport ships within themselves, so they have to stay in space in a fleet convoy

Remember it took the Star Wars equivalent of Divine Intervention to beat Thrawn here. Brilliantly Written. Dare I say the writers learned from the joke they made out of Grievous
I love how he disappears after his vague warning about how he's going to be defeated. Also, Thorn can't anticipate the more large scale force events. It seems that he can anticipate the smallest scale stuff since he factories in the jedis abilities, but when they do big scale stuff, it's something he can't anticipate like ezren's ability to summon. All of the purgles was outside of thorn's expectations since that's actually one of the higher force powers due to the large number of purgles being controlled old by azra. On top of that, Ezra was able to use his powerful force connection to find out that you need to use frequency zero to summon them in the first place. He was also using the force power of prediction at a very high level to predict every action thorn was going to take similar to how Canaan knew he was going to die as renew everything there was going to happen, even stating a plan that was supposed to initiate the minute thorn showed up
I would love to have seen the emperor's face when Thrawn told him that they had the rebels, but they then escaped when we were attacked by some creature that summoned a storm and rained death on us.
Imagine seeing a hurricane approaching you blowing your stuff up and yelling it brings death and your commanding officer says “shoot at the middle of the hurricane!” Surprised the death trooper didn’t go forget that I’m out

Y'know, if the Bendu just hadn't said anything, Thrawn wouldn't have known to concentrate fire on the center of the storm. Must have been the Will of the Force (TM).
I think its to Thrawn's credit that when the rebels play one hell of a wildcard and bring a friggin' pissed off god to the table, it only takes him about five minutes to adjust, recalculate and then remove said god from the equation
"And now, Captain Syndulla, I will accept your formal surrender. Or, you will watch your friends perish, one by one, beginning with the Jedi." That's the moment we should have known Kanera was canon. Thrawn knew damn well how close they were, just like in Thrawn: Alliances where he knew Anakin and Padme had feelings for each other (not that it takes Thrawn to see that those two had something going on).
As a being of both light and dark it's fair to presume that Bendu would have the power to control both sides. But there's also the fact that he is an ancient creature, in Legends, sith lord have been known to create storms and whatnot so this is not over the top. Another motivator as to why Bendu used that much strength was that this planet is his home and that Kanan was a friend to him and wanted to protect him which by extension means the rebel group. In short, a literal force of nature prevented a full victory for Thrawn but it certainly didn't mean a full perfect defense on the rebels either, many have died, whether on screen or not. Remember Clone Wars fandom, more deaths doesn't equal in a better show. And Disney aren't the one writing this, the studios Lucasart is, they simply own the studio now so stop getting your panties up in a bunch.
combinecommando001 Actually Bendu was just on an all-out killing spree, and Kanan is probably in the top of his killing list. But yeah, it did stop Thrawn's victory.

Bendu be like. "I am the one in the middle. I do not choose sides. That's why I'm going to target multiple Imperial vessels, and basically ignore the Rebels. I might kill one Rebel ship, but it won't have anyone important on it."
