+coast to coast am The original trilogy storm troopers were all humans, conscripted humans, probably not well trained. There were some clones alive around then, but they were all a lot better and not seen in the movies. The clones were superior in every way to average humans. But then again I haven't seen the movie, so maybe they changed a lot of the lore, idk.

AuthorityCat Well here they are children taken from birth. Raised by the First Order and they go through training and indoctrination and such. It happens sometimes that the troopers starts to deviate from the indoctrination and shows signs of free will, like Finn does. He is lucky that Poe is taken capture so they are both able to escape which sets everything off. Also, Finn's name comes from his assigned number FN2187.

Im not gonna go nuts. Im not gonna type up 30 paragraphs. Im not gonna get into long arguments with people who try to argue. All I'm going to to say is this: This movie is not perfect, it is not flawless, and it is not going to please every Star Wars fan. But you know what? It was everything- *everything*- that it needed to be. It was what needed to happen. No ifs, ands, or buts. Star Wars has been reborn. And it is good. Here's to the future. It's looking bright.

I dont see what the big hype is about. Its an alright movie, nothing special. I think people give it more credit than it deserves just because its Star Wars. The effects are better but the story is predictable copy-paste of 90% of movies and the characters are not really all that unique. Its all been there done that, they just redo the same shit they know sort of works. Its an OK movie, but it doesnt stand apart from any other CGI clusterfuck. Had this been anything but Star Wars it wouldnt get anywhere near the reviews it did. There is nothing to spoil. Its exactly what you think it is. Good vs Bad, as always, and Good wins. Big surprise.

+RJ Lee What's amusing is that this is a formula that is used over and over and over since man learned to write and be creative. When Disney announced they would be throwing out the EU, people raged. When it was said Lucas wouldn't be involved, people raged. Again, amusing, as the EU and the prequels were incredibly weak. You know what you missed in this film? The fact that 95% of the effects are practical. Here is a complete list of what was CGI: two characters, the sun, a weapon blast and a few impossible to shoot angles for flight sequences (hyperspace, aerial maneuvers, etc.) Here is a complete list of what wasn't CGI in the prequels: like four actors. And your good versus evil reference probably forgot a few points in this film where it was pretty clear the only thing the good guys won was another day to live because I'm pretty sure a few people elsewhere in the galaxy would disagree with you were they not too busy wondering why the sky is red.

+The Wilfred Oh man it was fantastic. It might be the second best Star Wars movie, after Empire. It also makes me angry that Lucas made the prequels when a person is capable of making something as wonderful as Episode 7. I just loved it. What a great cinema experience.

+Wolferine07 I wouldn't say it's fantastic - except for the audiovisual presentation, which genuinely is. The characters are good and I enjoyed the humor, even the hokier bits, but the problems stand out a bit more for me. There's a fair number of problems it has with its storytelling and execution and I didn't like how rushed it felt. it's barely over two hours and I think an extra half hour would've given it some more space to work with, let us drink in those scenes the video mentioned a bit more.

It is frustrating when people keep rhetorically asking "Is the movie perfect?", because it sounds like they are insinuating that the originals are. None of the Star Wars films are perfect. None of them are masterpieces. Take off your nostalgia googles and you will see them for what they are, incredibly well-made, extremely fun, smarter-than-average blockbusters. Nothing more, nothing less, and by the sounds of it this film is just as good as the original films.

Empire honestly gets pretty close. But you're right. I agree with one of the guys in the review. For every imperfection in TFA I can name 5 things that make up for it. This movie delivered despite the hype.

My opinion is no less valid than those who constantly hold the original trilogy to a ridiculous level and then criticise any movie for not being as good even though the likelihood is it is as good or maybe even better but people wont admit it because they have 30 years of nostalgia and familiarity with the originals that they don't have with this film.

+Treefrog Johnson I totaly agree, the originals aren´t what some people think they are! Are they amazing? Yes, but so was this one, in my opinion just as good! and it will get even better when the next movies come out . People say its a rebooted story, but its a story that makes sense (Obviously we woundn´t just got back to the state things were before, loyaslists to the empire would always remain). That being said i do hope that they now branch out into a different storyline wich i think jj will. I acctualy loved that they started with a common base to A New Hope. there is so much space to grow and im really exited to see the entire trilogy

As SPOILER FREE AS I CAN: I just saw Star Wars. Here are my thoughts, I loved it. However, my brain keeps nitpicking certain things. The main bad guy.... OMG ultra powerful to ultra weak within the span of the movie. It felt like they had a good villain and then Disney made him like every other Marvel villain - the weak villain that can almost be forgettable. It also felt like they had a A New Hope checklist and scrambled it and made this movie. Pacing was amazing! I did not want it to end.

Here's what i think. The villain hasnt finished his training right? I suppose its okay to see him kinda weak in this movie, but we can expect him to get a lot stronger and more vader-ish as he finished (or maybe still in the middle if his) training. You thoughts?

+BoydofZINJ You say he went from ultra powerful to ultra weak but I honestly think the only reason we think he's powerful at the beginning is his mask. Throughout the movie I was getting the impression that he wasn't as powerful as he thinks he is or wants to be. He understands the force enough to use it but isn't particularly skilled when it comes to sword fighting and other aspects.

I'll have to watch it a second time to get a solid opinion but for the first viewing it has been really enjoyable.

Who exactly? The Guardian? New York Times? Because all the major critics like the movie. The guardian gave it five stars. I've seen it and I can say that it is a million times better than phantom. I think it comes the closest to being as good as the first two as any Star Wars film ever has since.

+Peter Peterson I'm with you on that, I think they are either blinded by the flashy lights, the explosions and the thrill of the roller coaster ride this movie offers or they may be afraid to say anything bad about the movie because they fear it might hurt the future of the franchise. Or maybe they've just been warned by the almighty Disney corporation of their fate if they fail to praise the movie lol. Most of the comments I've read are saying the same stuff , it mimics the original trilogy too much and looks more like a rip off than anything else. Nobody seems all that hyped, or enthusiastic either in these reviews (except for Jeremy Jahns, but that's to be expected from him). Just look at the faces on these 3 guys for example, their expressions are pretty bland compared to the guy who hasn't seen the movie yet.

The point is, this movie is all about emotions, characters and their interactions because that's what ANH was about, the plot was just an excuse at the time and it still is now. I still think they could have done a lot better with the plot, but they nailed all the important bits at least.

Saw it last night... I thought it was.... 100% J.J. Abrams. Agreed on almost everything except the bad guy... Weak, very weak... Didn't even come close to the menacing presence of Darth Vader. I will have to say that just like Jurassic Park, this one will be enjoyed & loved by the new generations... I think Avatar will be displaced from number one spot in the box office; I estimate $2.8 to $3 billion (worldwide).

(Some spoilers) Why is everyone who didn't like the film complaining so much about the plot? What the hell were you expecting? A complicated, original, deeply-woven story, or a character-driven film that focused on introducing the audience to these completely unknown heroes and making us like them (successfully, might I add)? Part of the reason why this takes after A New Hope so much is so that we know this film is indeed Star Wars and not just another CGI-action hack. This film FEELS like a Star Wars movie should. And mostly all the homage is done really well. Sure, there's a lot of it, but it gives the movie so much heart that the saga was desperately missing. If you really want to get into it, the original Star Wars' plot was a bit of a copy-paste of the classic adventure films of the 40s and 50s, not some deep or overly complex drama. But because that classic story was done so incredibly well, it became legendary. This film does what it needs to: tells a twice-told (but timeless) story while setting up a whole new chapter. Look forward to VIII for a complex plot. Or would you rather have watched another numbing clusterfuck of space politics and emergency chancellor power-play bullshit? That was original AND complex.

Honestly I also felt the conflict between the first order and the resistance was forced. So there is a new Republic that allowed this wanna be empire surface and build a planet. Who is the first order oppressing? Who is the resistance trying to save? Felt no connection to this conflict the we did the rebellion vs the empire in A New Hope. Nor did I feel a threat from their base. I feel Starkiller base was only there for one scene in the movie to serve as symbolism. Honestly, I loved daisy Ridley and Harrison did a great job but I eel like this was a high quality big budget fan fiction film. George Lucas isn't perfect but you can definitely feel his absence in this film (not talking prequel comparison). Thoughts?

I am not a huge star wars fan. I love action movies as well as great dramas. The Sar Wars The Force Awakens is a beautiful blend of both. It complimented the original three without dwelling on the political disaster prequels. In my mind, I give the new Star Wars a solid 8 out of 10. It's great in both action / adventure, and in emotional drama.

The burned the shit out of an elderly couple, slaughtered some robot traders, killed all but three fighters out of 30 in the death star battle. But a 4 foot tall teddy bear over powering an average sized man/woman in armor with an energy weapon? Come on, that's like the whole batman vs superman fight. Supes never has to get in swinging distance of bat man, much less find himself in a boxing match. Just don't make no sense. Never did buy Jorge's excuse for why he didn't use Wookies in that fight. They went through just as much to make a bunch of midget costumes as they would have to make a bunch of giant bear costumes. What's the big deal? Saying that it wasn't feasible is just a BS excuse for him wimping out and going all Rated G. What made it so problematic? Not enough people over six feet 5? SPOILERS* I really liked it. I'm not an uber Star Wars fan, but just enough to understand its universe. People keep on saying that it's nostalgia goggles probably doesn't even realize that they're the ones blinded by it. I came into the theatre cleansing my palette of the previous movies and left with great satisfaction as I left the cinema. The biggest complaint I've seen haters bring up so far is that's a clone of Star Wars(relabeled later as "A New Hope"). I see the similarities, and to be honest, I think it's clever how they were able to showcase the story so well. Hasn't any of the haters ever heard of "History repeats itself?". The real "fanboys" are the ones who refuse to accept a great movie for what it is, thinking there should have been a better story. The story format is amazing, you know why? Because The original trilogy was also a knock off. George Lucas wanted to do a Flash Gordon film but wasn't able to secure the rights and made Star Wars instead with a similar story

Why is everyone complaining about this movie? Imo it is one of the best Star Wars movies ever made, our favourite characters return to the series and I really got that "Star Wars" feeling while watching it. Of course it has some flaws but the originals also had flaws? The storyline is a lot similar to a new hope but it was still very exciting throughout the movie and I was always wondering what would happen next. This was everything I could have ever hoped for with a Star Wars movie and I am more than satisfied with it! JJ Abrams did a great job!:)

Good acting, good cinematography, good effects (loved the practical stuff), horrible plot (because it is recycled), too rushed, underwhelming music, too many jokes, too predictable. overall, i think it fails due to the plot. this movie succeeded where the prequels failed.....and failed where the prequels succeeded. and in some cases overcompensated the prequels problems to make the opposite problems.

Episode 4 was good because it had never been done before. Episode 7 takes all episode 4 had already done and mix it awkwardly. I don't consider that great.

Spoiler Alert The only problem I have in this movie the that they totally wasted Gwendoline Christie character. She doesn't do anything in this movie, as she is only their for 3 min of screen time. I was so hyped for her character when I saw her in the trailer because she looked like a total badass. But seriously what was her purpose, you could literally replace her charter with a normal stormtroper that is high ranked. But I still loved this movie.

Boba Fett was just a throw away character in the original trilogy and had no more screen time in the ESB than Phasma has in TFA, he just became a popular character over the years. They are obviously trying to repeat it with Phasma, it's just a pathetic attempt to sell toys.

I usually agree with how you guys liked a movie but you're wrong on this one. this is the worst Star Wars to date I would much rather watch Phantom Menace then this sad excuse for a Star Wars movie. it was just Star Trek meets The Avengers with all this joking around and being funny. If you listen to anything I say about it, it's this Disney built the coffin for it and J.J. Abrams put the nails in it.

Superb review! JJ Abrams delivers a great film. Thoughtful, engaging story-line, believable characters due to performances with genuine emotion, realistic landscapes due to filming on-location (with minimal use of CGI). Some aliens as minor characters but the focus is kept on the human characters. Newcomers Daisy Ridley (as Rey) and John Boyega (as Finn) are absolutely stellar. The whole cast is great. Best quote to respond to this Screen Junkies film review: "It's true. All of it."

I mean many great films can have a critisism or two, and this is the case with The Force Awakens. But the film overall is a magnificent experience. The superb story, incredible characters both old and new, breathtaking action sequences, gorgeous direction from Abrams, and the overall feeling of joy and excitement watching was the best cinematic experience ive ever had.

Tom Baker Nah when the prequels came out, everything was praised. No one said anything was wrong about ep1; none of the acting, decisions, effects, or even jar jar. Ep2 got a bit and by ep3 there were people who still drank the coolaid trying to like it while others began to realize it. Ep3 still huge then tho, and it wasnt till years later that people started looking back on them without nostalgia goggles. Now its well accepted that theyre garbage in every aspect but it wasnt always like that.

I stopped this video 3 minutes in. The moment they said that daisy riddley was a standout in the movie, I just knew they were talking bullshit, she's a poor actor playing a badly written mary sue. I don't have a problem with a female lead (because self righteous white knighting dipshit is bound to think that's my beef), but she was easily one of the worst parts of the movie, even with a good actress the character would have been bad.

The only thing i can say is that Dan's expresion gives it all way the movie is not spectacular but is manageble. the characters seen to be forced to bond to each other for no apparent reason it reminds me of my mom watching soap operas and also of the HOBBIT were the king becomes mad instantly with no build up to the moment so are the new characters i wont ad spoilers cuz i hate them but be warned go into this movie with less hope for a great performance from the new actors mainly because of the directors in my opinion not the actors themselves.

It has other issues too - many of them, and the importance of them is debatable. But the plot is almost entirely ripped-off and so calling it a great or amazing (as most people seem to be saying) movie just seems flawed in itself.

Good, but disappointing movie. It relied too much on the old movies, not taking enough risks and not creating a new and original story, which felt kinda cheap. And how the hell is Kylo Ren a great character?? His motivations aren't flashed out at all.. plus, he's gotta be the worst sith apprentice ever (not gonna spoil why)! Stormtroopers are still blind dumbasses, and don't even get me started on phasma. The movie in a nutshell: excellent new protagonists, weak story and villains.

+OneAndOnlyBillyJ I think you're right, it's a bit hypocritical of Dan to be so harsh on Jurassic World for being blatantly nostalgic, and then be "Star Wars is amazing" even though it does pretty much the same thing. It has bigger explosions, more visually captivating action set-pieces, and good characters, all drenched in a hefty dosage of "the originals are awesome!" hanging over them. So I think if Dan hated JW so much simply cause it was retreading the original and living off of nostalgia, then he shouldn't like SW: TFA as much as he seems to do. That said, he's entitled to his opinion, but that level of hypocrisy makes it a bit harder to take his opinion seriously.

I thought for sure Dan was going to be more critical of that "Nostalgia Factor" and bring up the same points he did with his "Jurassic World" bashing, but surprisingly it was Andy that brought up that argument. It was still a good movie, nonetheless, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to sit here and say that the movie was terrible by any stretch of the imagination, same as "Jurassic World," Star Wars: The Force Awakens seems to take all our favorite parts of the original movies and mashes them together into a cohesive movie with some new features. I think that after all the glitz and glamour fades and people watch it several times and start thinking about it critically, they will realize it and come to the same conclusion, or they will be die hard fan boys and keep their rose colored glasses on, no matter what anyone says.

In the end There are movies in which you can say: "Hey just lower your expectations, take it easy and enjoy the ride". TFA is definitely NOT one of this movies. JJ Abrams and co took upon themselves this tremendous undertaking, Understanding that less than brilliant movie will not be accepted, and definitely thriving towards that goal. This movie had big shoes to fill from the mostly epic original trilogy , to the soul crushing prequels. This movie was supposed to be the the cure to mend the broken hearts of us lucas ravaged fans. Maybe in a normal summer blockbuster scale this movie can be called "entertaining and extremely well made"' but in my opinion this movie is a sad disappointment. that too bad, because I came ready to believe.

It was episode 4 + episode 1... the plot was recycled the enemy's are recycled the tech is recycled... Its basically a big nostalgic money grab.. generic and could have been a lot better with some original content!

The characters weren't really original.. The plot was pretty much episode 4 with elements from episode 1. But if you don't mind basically the same story with different actors then more power to you.

I think one of the reasons why it is so controversial is that this is filling us in on what happened in a large time period and is acting as a filler. It's not supposed to give us the full story just yet. Although I found it very good, it's just "setting things up" for Episode VIII

+Samuel Nell I didn't say it wasn't good. But if you call yourself a true starwars fan, then you can spot the same flaws that left me feeling the way I did. People can say that all movies have flaws, but I don't come out of all movies with that slight dissatisfied feeling that TFA left me with. Again, not saying I didn't like it. 2 sides to the coin.
