The Prequels are where most Jedi we like come from. Before the Prequels, the force-user/lightsaber-wielding roster was pitifully small. Only Vader, Luke, The Emperor, and Obi Wan for like 10 minutes and Yoda as a sideshow. Qui-gon, Darth maul, Dooku, Mace Windu, general greivous, ki Adi mundi all are added. Even Yoda and Obi Wan are developed by the Prequels.

I have a headcanon where the whole prequel trilogy is all told through a nostalgic lens by Darth Vader. 1: PM is where he is a child, everything is shiny and pretty, adult stuff is adult stuff and that is why its boring, he doesnt understand what the force actually means so they explain it as "midiclorians" so that he can sort of get it, and Jar Jar is a fun and goofy character which he enjoys at that time. 2: AotC is where he is a teen/young adult, he falls in love, he discards childish things like Jar Jar, which we see the "realer" version of here, and all is romance and beauty. 3: RotS is where he falls, so a lot of it is reflected in a very superficial way, he remembers only the most obvious and painful things as well as imagine a lot of the things that happened when he wasnt around. Too me, that is what the prequels are, Darth Vaders memories, that is why they can be so superficial. In reality, Jar jar maybe was much more adult, except for when Anakin was around, because then he played and bumbled with and for little Ani. He maybe didnt win the Pod race, but instead was bought free by another means which the adults didnt tell him about as he should'nt know, which is why they "just leave her there" (maybe thats why she was with the raiders in AofC). The reason why he blows up the trade federation space station isnt ust because he is good at flying, but because R2 is there, and we all know he is a badass and probably the real pilot there who worked really damn hard to protect little Anakin. I mean, this makes sense to me at least.

actually.... That makes a lot of sense. Maybe we are seeing the story from Anakin eyes and that's a very good concept... but still the movie falls flat because of its bad execution. That's why we have so many Fan Edits of the movie trying to fix it, with varying degrees of success

You didn't sell me on the characters not having agency. For example, Qui Gon was an excellent character with clear motivations, and he was active in shaping the story, fighting the jedi council in his efforts to make Anakin a jedi. You could also look at Palpatine. If we look at him as a character, rather than just the conflict of the plot, he's anything but passive (obviously, the video basically said as much). But he can be compared to Thanos. Much like Thanos is to Infinity War, Palpatine's kind of like the protagonist of the prequel trilogy, and it's intriguing to watch him work and accomplish his goals by controlling both sides of the conflict. (Also, just a side note, I don't see what the big deal with midichlorians is. It's just a way of gauging force aptitiute. It doesn't have to remove the mystery of the magic any more than the fact that some people in the Harry Potter universe are genetically born as wizards while others are not. If your issue is with the part about midichlorians being microorganisms that live in the blood, if you think that idea is utterly ridiculous, just look at mitochondria. The powerhouse of the basic unit of life was believed to have existed as its own microorganism until it entered into a symbiotic relationship with cells. These microorganisms that live in our blood are the source of our energy, kind of like, you know, THE FORCE.)

@decidiousrex

Seriously, I think you can actually make a pretty case for every main character having agency. Obi Wan wants to complete his master's last request, to turn Anakin into a jedi. Padme wants to avoid the violence of the war, and just wants for democracy to function. Palpatine wants to become the evil ruler of the universe. Those are all clear motivations that drive the plot. The last one is the most important, but also the trickiest one: Anakin. His agency is his desire for more power. When he's a kid on Tatooine, he wants to be a jedi. When he's an apprentice, he wants to become a master. He's never happy with what he can do, he always wants to become more powerful. And I also totally agree about the midichlorians. I absolutely do not understand the big deal about them. They're just like living "receptors" for the force, it's not taking away any of the mystery. Idk, haters gonna hate I guess.
@AdolfoWWolf
@AdolfoWWolf 4 года назад
@SwenglishGamer That's actually a good comment, and i agree that the comparison for Palpatine to Thanos is not very good. However, if you watched the movie, you know why Qui gon Jin wants to train Anakin, because he senses his power, and then analyses him with the jedi device, to then come to the conclusion, that he must be the chosen one, the one that will bring balance and all, even though this decision or motivation is not something very personal, it is a reason, he is a Jedi master with knowledge and beliefs in his Jedi ways, and when you consider that this movie, and the other two, are moving to connect with the old trilogy, or episode 4, you can better accept a lot of things. I believe while the movies has weaknesses, they where very good movies to watch, and most of the flaws where overblown by fans with other expectations of how these movies would go, and the very different setting from the 4th episode. I don't dislike the Phantom Menace, and the fact that people dislike it for the politics, is pretty weird to me, since this is a very logical thing to go with to make the rise of the empire more interesting, and it is indeed.
@AdolfoWWolf
@AdolfoWWolf 4 года назад
@SwenglishGamer That's where i disagree, the politics are a interesting aspect of the movie, how do you think the empire happened? Dull and boring are not words that i would use for Qui gon jin, i would say that he is not a developed character for sure. Now i agree that this is a flaw of the movie, but mostly because it spends very little time presenting some conflicting motivation to why Padme for instance wanted to act, as with a very small scene where she listens to a message where her advisor tells her that the death toll are in the thousands if memory serves me well. That could have been better explored, the point is that, for me that was enough, not the best way, but it was there. In the end there was still a very enjoyable movie there, and i would not believe that most of the "hate" doesn't comes from conflicting expectations. Star Wars has flaws in all of it's movies, and while i accept that this is the weakest of the movies, it still is a good watch.
@AdolfoWWolf
@AdolfoWWolf 4 года назад
@SwenglishGamer Yep, the sequels did fail, they went head dive into doing a Star Wars movies without having the complete picture beforehand, plus some really weird decisions along the way, in other words, a lot of shit. I will say this, you are putting a lot of emphasis on the "emotional" part of the characters, which is an important aspect, but i don't mind too much on the human factor of those characters as my primary relating aspect to any movie, to give you a perspective, i started watching star wars because of the spaceships and lasers stuff, some of my favorite parts are from the space battles, and the Tie fighter is the most iconic ship to me, even more than the Falcon, even after growing up, the tech and scy-fi aspect of said movies, are the things that get my interest going the most, not that i skip the human or emotional aspects any bit, it's just that this is not what i'm mostly going for with any movie. The world building, the places they go, the rules and aspects of these civilizations they visit, the tech itself and how they deal with all of these, are aspects that if well done enough, i will be satisfied with, and then the other portions will be the icing on the cake. These movies do that very well, and are superior even more that of the original trilogy in this. And i'm also not denying any of the pointed flaws, i respectfully commend you for not going with "the light saber fights are too over choreographed" or "the CGI is horrible" usual targets. If you look at what the characters have, they still have a good structure to them, but the lack of emotional investment in each of these in the first movie, is something that would greatly benefit the movie, had it been better explored, i don't disagree. I also don't back down from my statement that this is a good movie, and that these movies received extra degree of scrutiny from some people for previous expectations. If i could see these aspects of the movie and the plot, I'm pretty sure there are a good bunch of other people as well.

The one thing I disagree with is Qui-gon Jinn being a paper boat. When he finds Anakin his sole purpose (it seems) is to make him a jedi, and he is even the starting point of every (minor) argument within the core group. Every time I watch this movie I consider Qui-gon to be the protagonist in disobeying the jedi rules and searching for true balance, and not the passive and morally f*cked up ideology of the jedi counsel. Thoughts?

@ChadDerekJacobson
@ChadDerekJacobson 5 лет назад
Agreed. To any extent I pay attention to any story in Phantom, it's mostly about Qui-Gon. Firstly using his wits to frustrate imposing threats coming from mysterious evil wizards, and secondly making the resolute choice to train Anakin. Though I do also see two other powerful moments of "agency" in the movie coming from Anakin and Padme, choosing to selflessly help strangers and then liberate Naboo respectively. Qui-Gon even died making sure Darth Maul wouldn't interfere with the latter.

I agree... However i do really REALLY gave this movie a chance. When i was a kid by the time i was 9 i already watched the episodes IV, V and VI a lot of times, i was a fan, i get the comics, watched the droids series, toys and stuff, in 1999 i was 11 and i remember i begged my dad to go watch this movie. So little me watched and... I was a bit confunded, the original was not a complex story i get it, but is was like "WTF are taxes or midiclorians or pod racing" i get out of the movie feeling a bit dumb. Watched again a couple years later a bit before the premiere of episode II and still feel like i was missing stuff. Finally circa 2006 i watched again... And still nothing. I actually dropped any effort to try to get the movie for many years thinking that maybe time would make his work and some time in the future i would find something more valuable in the pequels. Around 2017 some Friends and i did a marathon so i rewatched all the movies until that point, thus giving me the full picture at least in theory of all the films and i put a lot of effort to find anything there, something that the younger me missed all this years... But no, over 20 years later i didn't find anything that can save the mest that episode I is. Maybe another decade Will help, or not.

I love the fact that Star Wars: The Clone Wars really leaned into Jar Jar as an enjoyable and significant side character. For me it was a great middle-finger to the prequel-haters. My favourite scene is Mace Windu finally working out how to use him in battle and sends him to take out a tank, which Jar Jar dutifully does with a flurry of brilliant clumsiness. The 'Huh, that actually worked', look on Windu's face at the end is grand.

I think it wouldve been better if it focused on anything. Tell the story from Palpatines perspective sure. Anakins fine. Hell even Obi Wan or Padme. But this thing is all over the place with so much unnecessary stuff. The whole Gungan story with Jar Jar makes the Casino scene in TLJ look like a nitpick. The second one has a similar issue, the third ones the best but so much crap has been baked into the pie at that point. Also Vader never does anything badass. I always wanted to see him slay like tons of Jedi Masters and prove his superiority not just have storm trooper grunts take em out.

The 'Dual of the Fates' will always be one of my favorite moments in all of cinema. The pacing of the fight, the way each character's traits were displayed and represented by each of their actions throughout the scene, and of course that masterpiece of a composition. There are so many aspects to that entire sequence that makes it simply unbeatable in my opinion. Easily one of the most impactful and memorable combat scenes to come out of not just Star Wars, but the history of film. I know plenty of people will disagree with me about most if not all of that, and I'll be the first to admit that there are some rather large issues throughout the whole scene, but that's still been my opinion of it ever since the first time I saw The Phantom Menace.

Acting like that rumor is fact, is the most ridiculous shit I've seen the internet run with. Because there are minor hints, and people theorizing what it "COULD" mean...there is no concrete evidence Jar Jar was anything more than the token goofy character. Stop passing this unsubstantiated rumor around as fact. Nobody cares if GL said "Jar Jar is key" out of context in an unrelated question....he was likely nothing more than comic relief.

I've seen COUNTLESS videos breaking down all the supposed reasons & rationale behind it...They're all heavily predicated on assumptions and what they WANT to see, rather than the truth of the matter. People see what they want to see, rather than what's actually there. I've tried to subscribe to this theory repeatedly, but after watching the PM each time, it's far too much of a stretch to actually be true. Jar Jar simply is entirely too stupid, on every level, and designed that way intentionally, to the point where nothing could possibly make him appear intimidating, serious or scary for a future evil turn. You can load him up with red lightsabers, change his eye color to red instead of yellow, you can deepen his voice to some James Earl Jones shit, or you could even give him a suit of armor & black cape....the guy will still look like an awful joke. Even looking at fan art for just a concept of a "Darth Jar Jar" is hilarious! Nobody, not even someone as awful as George Lucas, would ever be dumb enough to try & make THAT a lead villain.

Same. I mean, they aren't the best films, but they are by no means bad. Yeah, some of the acting and voices and really, and I mean REALLY bad, but the themes and the weired group of "protaginists" Alows us to get a sense of scale and points of view, such as the queen's idealism, the jedi's cockyness, the sith's cunning, and corruption of the polotics of the Republic. All of these factors gives us a more cruel, yet more true to life world, where good and evil are blurred a bit. Of course the Jedi are still the good guys, but it becomes apparent in later films that the way they do things is not correct, and could even be seen as aginst the very things they stand for. What I really like about the prequels is that despite being such a bright and cunning young man, Anakin, the chosen one, fails to become the jedi that he was destened to be because his "friends" (the jedi) are always at odds with im, even from the start! They didn't even want to train him despite his gifted abilities because the boy gives a crap about his mother. When he has been treated badly his entire life, he only trusts the few people in his life, and when they betray him to defend the order which stood aginst him, it makes you wonder what he could have been if the Jedi were just a little more flexable. Of course, I don't really understand why he had to kill kids. Over all the prequels are masterpieaces in story, but flawed in execuation. Personally, my favirote star wars films are the 3rd episode, and the 6th one. They show very similar stories, with very similar people, but what makes them diffrent is the showing that no matter if someone belives in good or evil, it is the showing that commpasion (or lack there of) can go a long way for a person. It makes them who they are, and shapes them to what they will become in the future. Compare the people Luke is with verus the people Anakin is with. While luke is with friends he can trust who support him, Anakin is almost exclusivly with someone who he hates, not because they are being hard him persay, but because he is being limited, because he cannot pursue his training because of the fear of his failure. While Luke is able to save his friends, Anakin is not, leading to his eventual turn to the darkside. Yoda was right, but sadly could not see the fear in himself and his fellow jedi. Star wars is my fav saga because it shows such dark themes, but shows solutions to the problems that were thier through decades of time. Wow, I can write all that, but can't right a paragraph for my essay back in school. Well, TL;DR, a person's destiny guided by those who guide him. Thanks for reading.

When it's about something as large as Star Wars, even "forgotten " classics like the 1st Clone Wars, it would be difficult to erase it from collective memory. It was on TV all the time, and it shows the signature of real creative thinkers, while remaining true to that basic history already so meticulously congealed. There was an intentional desire to let the more lose Tartakovsky vision to be gradually ignored, instead of letting it earn the status of Star Wars masterpiece.

Ughh, I'll stick with the 2008 CG show instead. I do not see the appeal in the Tartakovsky micro series, it's really ugly and awful to me. Everyone says Grievous is awesome and badass in that show, but to me he looks like he's made out of spaghetti and his fights are so badly drawn and poorly choreographed. Plus, every Jedi near him just ends up dropping about 50 IQ points for no reason and they all forget they have force powers so Grievous can get a contrived victory, except rare moments like Windu crushing his chest -- which he should have just led with! Also Mace Windu looks embarrassingly hideous in that show. His head looks like a keyhole and that's really distracting. And what was up with that ridiculous, stupid-looking fight with the droids? People think that's cool, but why?! Even as a kid I thought that was one of the dumbest things I'd seen.

The prequel trilogy should’ve been about a fascist minority (the Sith) conspiring with the bourgeoisie (the Trade Federation) to manipulate a “democratic” republic (the Galactic Republic). And the story of how the well intentioned “peace” keepers (the Jedi) become part of the problem instead of solving it. They could’ve fleshed out the ideology of the Sith a little more too. Or how power corrupts and why the Jedi aren’t universally beloved by everyone in the Republic.

@@inz1 I think it's mostly because there were too many story lines that tried to be accomplished in too little time. This led to most of the plot components feeling rushed, glossed over, or contrived. Frankly, I think the Anakin origin story should've been skipped over completely. The prequels should've began around episode 2 with Anakin already a jedi in training. Why? Because Anakin's origin story is meaningless to the overall plot of the trilogy, which is his transformation into Darth Vader. Episode 1 should've been him as a young jedi who's powerful but arrogant, and the jedi order trying to teach him restraint. We should've seen him lose his mother in episode 1, despite his almost certain ability to save her, because the jedi restrict him from using his full power. Episode 2 should've seen him becoming more reckless with his power. At the end of the episode, we should've seen Dooku nearly kill Padme, but have Anakin go full-beast-mode and destroy him (in large part with guidance/encouragement from Palpatine). Now he sees that when he follows the teachings of the jedi, he loses loved ones, but when he disregards them and listens to Palpatine, he can save them. Episode 3 should've been the struggle for Anakin to reconcile his belief that the jedi are holding him back with still being a jedi. We should've seen him using his power more and more for self gain, again influenced and encouraged by Palpatine. I'd keep the scene with Mace Windu and Palpatine transforming into the emporer. Here, however, Anakin/Vader feels torn. He loves the power that he has, but he still has his friend Obi Wan and his love Padme, plus he feels guilt over what he did to Mace Windu. He tries to convince Obi Wan to join him, who of course says no and, recognizing the danger he poses, tries to kill Anakin/Vader, who will escape being killed by Obi Wan and go to find Padme who is also not on board with his turning to the dark side. She will run with Obi Wan, Anakin/Vader finds them, and him and Obi Wan have their epic faceoff with Obi Wan nearly killing him. In his anger and desire for retribution, he will try to kill Obi Wan but accidentally kill Padme, who by that time had actually given birth (unbeknownst to him). I think that is roughly what George Lucas had originally intended, since there was originally supposed to be 1 pre-prequel and then the prequel trilogy; I believe that first movie would've been the Anakin origin story and the prequel trilogy was the arc of the transformation into Vader. At any rate though, the actual arc (though a bit confusing and less powerful than it could've been) was still quite good, especially in comparison to the dumpster fires Disney is releasing.

The only thing that's wrong with Ep1 is the plot and Jar-Jar. The music, the effects, the worldbuilding, the fights choreography - you can't say that these all are bad! It's a real shame too because the plot is so integral to the enjoyment of a story. It's easy to forgive mediocre music, cheesy effects, and a ho-hum world if the plot is awesome. Inversely if the plot and characters are poor and not entertaining, no amount of the other stuff can make up for it. This is true of any media. If the core is crap than no matter how much polish and fluff you add, it's still crap. If the core is gold, then no matter how much dirt and filth is covering it, it's still gold.

I think most of the things we perceive as "flaws" in the prequels were intentional. The politicians were meant to be either corrupt (Palpatine) or naive (Padmé), the Jedi were meant to be stuck-up. If there had been more wisdom and compassion in the galaxy and more communication between either groups or powerful individuals, the Old Republic wouldn't have crashed down so disastrously. The prequels are a foil to the classics. In retrospect, I like how realistic the prequels are. They don't show the ideal world Obi-Wan described to Luke in "A New Hope", the show the bitter truth. Preparing the way for the sequels, where both politics and spiritualism must find a new and better way.
@SuperTonyony

You're on to something there. For example, many people are confused by Lucas having Jedi tell various characters not to miss loved ones from whom they are separated or not to mourn for the deceased. Well, this is just Lucas himself admiring---but absolutely misunderstanding!---Eastern religions like Buddhism, which teaches you not to indulge in CLINGING attachments, but to learn to let go when you have no other choice. Lucas being Lucas, however, misreads Eastern religions and misrepresents them, thereby confusing his audience.

I disagree with your analysis that they have no agency. Qui-Gon could have mind tricked a dozen people on Tatooine to give him their ship but he puts his mission on the line to get to know and rescue a boy he thinks is special. Anakin struggles with the joy of freedom with the heartbreak of leaving his mother. Amidala chooses to return to the planet even after the successful bid to change the government to a more interventionist leadership , she could have let the situation play out in Coruscant with her own safety guarenteed and a long term solution rolling out but she chose to be forceful in her pursuit if what she wanted. Obi-wan is a more muted character but even he displays conflict between supporting his master vis-a-vis Anakin and agreeing with the authority of the Council. But I’ll concede these plots are not personally explored, they require the audience to go hunting for them and to extrapolate the internal quandries of the characters. In this way it’s a very subtle, probably too subtle, film. I choose to forgive the Phantom Menace because I believe it overall did an excellent job of world building (midichlorians adise) in a way that made sense for the films which already existed, and it had to fill the action/adventure quota that Star Wars is known for.

If you think about It you talked about this movie in relation to Batman and Games of Thrones but especially the Phantom Menace it should be compared to Cars because that was target and that target remembers It as a funny entertaining movie (as I do)

So I was Born in 1996 and when my parents showed me star wars for the first time as a child, I watched I to VI so I saw this Episode first. And honestly me and my best friend never really got into the original series, even though my parents hated the new ones. So obviously my opinions have change to a certain degree, but there is so much nostalgia (outside the movies too, like legos) attached to it, that I can never honestly say I don't still enjoy the Phantom menace. My point is, maybe the target demographic just changed and grew up over time, when in reality the plot is fairly similar and the Story in the original series is just as bad/good if you get off your member-berries.

Okay, here we have a very interesting situation. I was also born in 1996 but my father made me watch the original trilogy the moment I could kind of understand what the fuck was going on. To this day, I can't stand the prequels for anything other than a joke, and Empire Strikes Back is the film that holds the entire franchise together. Weird how just watching them in a slightly different order changes so much.

The thing to remember about writing rules tho, is that nothing is set in stone. One of the best movies of the 80's was a paper boat movie. Raiders of the Lost Ark has long been known as the movie where nothing that Indy does changes the outcome one iota. But we love it anyway because the execution is nearly flawless.

I remember being 4 years old and going to the single grocery store in the small town that I grew up in, the first day that they received the card board Pepsi and Mountain Dew cut outs of Obi-Wan and Maul; the life size R2D2 soda cooler was wheeled in shortly after. My grandparents had bought me the 1997 VHS rereleases of the original trilogy and I watched at least one a day until the release of Phantom. Those Pepsi cutouts stood on top of the last freezer isle's chillers until who knows when, but when I visited that small town a few months ago for the first time in a long time, I saw that they had been taken down. It bummed me out a tad because I think that memory at 4 years old might be my first memory of feeling joy. TPM will always be my favorite Star Wars for this reason...right behind Empire of course.

I loved the movie when I was a kid, it being the first star wars movie i ever watched on the big screen. And I still love it now. it's a great movie to me and while it does have some weak moments like the choppy CGI especially in the final battle on naboo, it got me invested in the franchise. Qui-Gonn was an amazing addition to the star wars universe, I enjoyed Palpatine's manipulations and dialogue. I loved the pod racing, Ewan Macgregor as Obi-Wan was perfect. The jedi council, the fight with darth maul, the locations like Naboo and Corruscant were all so well done and added depth and scope to a universe that was so enticing for me.

“Worst character ever conceived in cinematic history” Think you went a lil easy on Jar Jar
@RParis-ov2rq

Jar Jar is one of the most misunderstood character in cinematic history. It's too bad this misunderstanding led to a rewrite of E2 & E3. Jar Jar WAS the Phantom Menace and not in some kind of pun or play on words either. He was a Sith Lord. This was confirmed by many sources, including the actor who portrayed him on set. But people tend to want to believe their first inclination than rather accept they got it wrong and change their ways. There are some fantastic videos of fans who dissected E1 and found evidence hidden in plain sight in conjunction with understanding and knowing the original story that Mr. Lucas got his muse from for writing E1-3. I'll give you a small glimpse into what was initially intended: Count Dooku never existed in SW before E2, check the original lore (not the rewritten material). Due to all the fan disapproval of Jar Jar in E1, it was realized in order for the new trilogy to keep audiences engaged (and money rolling in) they wrote him out and replaced his reveal with a new character: Count Dooku took the place of the villain. It was originally written that Yoda would smell Jar Jar out for who he was and have an epic lightsaber battle at the end of E2. Remember, Count Dooku is killed in one of the first scenes of E3, as he had served his purpose in the plot that so few realized. Sometimes the fans need to let creators build. He was trying to recreate the "I am your father" kind of moment again, but many vocal movie critics don't have the patience or attention span (just look how some many gawked at End Games run time). While most have disagreed with me, I find SW:E1 as a great case study of how mob mentality and groupthink among fans got it wrong and drove change into the very direction they didn't want. But believe what you want.

It seems to me to come down to a lack of planning. Not just in the new films, but all the way back to Episode 4. To be clear, that doesn’t mean there was no thought put into anything, but a lot of key character elements seem to have been either decided as they went along, or changed in less-than-subtle ways. Luke and Lea’s shipping? Gone. They’re siblings now, and that was all just a little creepy. The question of who shot first, Jar Jar being important, the physics behind how they managed to blow up the Death Star and light speed travel, who Snoak, Rey, Phasma, and Fin are, none of it seems to have been really thought out in advance. As a result, things get contradicted, plot holes develop, and we all suffer for it.

I think the original trilogy, well, at least Episode 4 and 5, had something going for it. there was something planned out there. And, there are enough references to Campbell's "Hero of a thousand faces" that can be seen in the original trilogy. You don't really see things discounted or retconned until episode 6

True. They planned out each individual movie, but not the overarching stories that tie them together. Episode 8 wouldn’t have been as disliked (it probably still wouldn’t have been GREAT) if Episode 7 hadn’t set up so much for the characters.

I've seen this trade argument several times now and it is not absurd nor stupid for traders to set up a blockade of their enemy. Merchant republics of Mediterranean did this all the time. Venice did not need its fleet simply for trade protection but to blockade other factions. This is what happened on our own Earth, where traders banded together all over Italy and created huge fleets which they used to wreck havoc across Mediterranean, to prevent other parties from participating in trade via the sea without paying them the racket. Its really infantile to mock like this, without giving a second thought. But hey, everybody is an expert today.

@Amquacktador
@Amquacktador 5 лет назад
Yes, but not in all characters. At the beginning of The Phantom Menace all we know is that Obi Wan Kenobi was a Jedi and that he knew/fought alongside Anakin Skywalker, who was a Jedi turned into the dark side of The Force. That's all. In telling the story of how that happened, Lucas and his crew could made the story more complex and at least more detailed that maybe it wouldn't look like bad written. The thing is, there's a lot of themes and topics treated but with poor development and the characters almost look one-dimensional.
@SurprisinglyDeep
@SurprisinglyDeep 4 года назад
The problem was that the characters never really discuss or showcase their thoughts, motivations and feelings. Granted, its clear they live in a society with rigid class roles and expectations (Padma is royalty, Obi Wan and Qui Gon Jinn are effectively warrior priests from a monastery, Anakin's a slave kid.) However even in classic literature from decades or even centuries ago the stories at least discussed the characters internal as well as external motivations. The original 3 Star Wars films are famous for the characters openly discussing their internal motivations. The characters in the Phantom Menace never do so.
