RVDHAFCA Great thing about acting, lets nice folks get in touch with their shadow side in a healthy way. We’ve all got one, and getting to exercise it in that kind of way kind of exorcises it as well.
Actually fans were very angry because we never got an Emperor Palpatine figure in the rise of skywalker’s very limitedly made toy line. We’re STILL waiting
Max Yeargain he played him in Return of the Jedi but not Empire Strikes Back. Later on he was reshot and added to Empire, replacing the original actor.
These nine first saga films are about Skywalker bloodline (Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Ben Solo), and their struggle between the light and the dark side while they are attempted to be used as tools for conquering the galaxy by Sheev Palpatine / Darth Sidious, the last of the Sith Masters.
Michelle AyalaGutierrez I mean it suited Sidious to have permanent warfare, gave him excuse to do more controls on galaxy for security and to keep growing military..
I have to disagree hard. The way his character was written was completely stupid. His goals kept changing constantly throughout the film. “Kill the girl” “I never wanted you dead, I wanted you here”
And it's a shame they didn't really do something with that in these new films. How awesome would it have been if Plagues was actually pulling the strings (or Snoke was him)... After all that time... But no... let's bring palpatine back and nullify Vader's redemption...
With respect - Star Wars has always been about merchandise. George funded Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi with his profits from the merchandising.
Episode IX was a flawed movie, but Ian McDiarmid was perfect as always. Less campy, more terrifying this time, and I loved it!! Performance-wise, I liked this version the most.
i enjoyed ros for what it was and parts of it could've been tied in better had last jedi not been a colossal clusterfuck last jedi could've been used to re-introduce lando and palpatine, lando coming in to back up leia's fleet then for the very last scene could've been snoke having a transformation that he was palpatine in disguise
9 is garbage which is a shame but he is fab. The performances of him daisy and adam were all awesome. I just wish it'd been him as a holocron guiding ren instead so he could be the true antagonist.
@@cole003f The Last Jedi could at least have had a scene at the very end of the movie where you see Palpatine, if Palpatine's return had been planned by then. Lando would have been inconsistent to the story as the biggest point in it was "Let the past die".
Jj: Bringing Palpatine back just made sense, it seems poetic like it was always meant to happen *cuts immediately to Ian* Ian: ...it’s definitely unexpected
@@15gamershaven89 for ian's wallet maybe. And as bad as episode 9 was, he had a good degree of presence in the movie. I don't remember much-I went in with expectations that were so low that I actually enjoyed it when I watched it.
He had the eyes of Freedon Nadd and life draining power of Nihilus.. but he did lose touch as he didn't determine the rise of the fallen jedi..that was his real undoing!!
It would make more sense if the First Order was actually a cult determined to resurrect Palpatine. The man himself didn’t have to be behind all this. He could just be a consequence, not the cause.
@@HurricaneGaming509 Good one! He would be the first attempt, and then the cult (that could be led by General Pryde, why not) would try again and again until we got the imperfect Palpatine seen in TROS.
This dude is my fav. Him and Anakin. I don't care what ppl or critics say; they played their roles great. Especially this dude right here. His scenes are so dark, so well written; so intense - Awesome actor. Looks to be a very kind person as well.
I didn't like the return of Palpatine in 9 as a story decision, but man, Ian is so great that I kind of forgive that one. The sequels has so many other problems that this could slip by
The Sequels is what killed Star Wars. The fact this whole timeline between the Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker was terribly written and was not star wars feeling at all. "Oh crap we killed Snoke off. May as well bring Palpatine back". Its a joke of a movie. Even Last Jedi. Sequel trilogy should not be canon AT ALL. I refuse what happens. Joke of a movie.
@@TechXV7 yeah but thats mostly cat and mouse with the first order and the resistene. Cool scenes in that, of course, but Luke was weak and not a lot of people liked seeing that including myself. No big fights, it was just running around. Force Awakens had a great start to it until someone took the role of director and messed it all up.
@@TechXV7 Yes, he has his limits, but he wasn't the only reason why the movie bombed in general. The whole plot to take over the Resistence was a mess. Chasing them around like the game tag, was stupid. Leia getting sucked out of a ship and surviving... apparently she's super women (not really). You and I both know this and many others. That's why if anyone actually loved the Sequels excluding Force Awakens, you can't really call yourselves true star wars fans until you understand the lore in between those 2 movies. Rise of Skywalker being the worst out of all of them. Yuck
@@gabrieldejesustorresrodrig9844 true. the first actor that played palatine in the episode 5 was ok, but Ian Macdiarmid is the best actor for this role
Ian definitely was the saving grace of the film. Only he could have made such a train wreck watchable That being said, I HATE how these writers are trying to pass it off as if Palpatine surviving was their original idea when that’s been in legends for like longer than the prequels have been around
Despite the reception, Ian McDiarmid ate up every scene he was in. It is always fun to watch him as the Emperor. If only the sequels set him up from the beginning, it would have been better. Hopefully the Mandalorian ties this all in and makes it work. I would love to see Ian as Palpatine again, and in great effect with more screen time.
they did. Rian Johnson threw it all out the window and for some reason, Disney just let him do it. JJ had an entire trilogy planned out, they've said that from the beginning and Johnson even said in interviews that he "didn't like" the storyline that was offered to him.
@@jschools1392 Not true, Yes JJ had ideas, but the problem was...... 3 directors, 3 different writers etc and more in the end .. what they didn't have and needed..... was the story arc set in stone....... Palpatine should have been revealed in eps 8 and the arc concluded in 9 - That is when Luke should have died also, but alas. (From a certain point of view of course)
George Lucas had a plan, they got rid of it and got JJ Abrams to create a plan. Abrams had a plan, then Rian Johnson threw it out the window and Carrie Fisher died. So it would have been impossible for them to stick to any of the old plans regardless. I think they did a decent job of salvaging what they could for Episode IX. It's very hard to make a good Episode IX when VIII painted you into a corner and one of your main actors died suddenly.
The idea of bringing back the Emperor wasn't a terrible idea imo (Mostly because I love Mcdiarmid's performance) but it should've been much better integrated into the trilogy.
@L J According to Kathleen Kennedy, they planned to bring him back even before The Force Awakens. That's possibly the reason for which Colin Trevorrow exited the project: he didn't attend the story conferences for the trilogy and thus his script featured Palpatine still dead yet appearing in hologram form.
@@joaquinbarboza3223 Kathleen Kenneddy is a liar. It was not planned. There is a lot of proof of this. He would have been teased earlier on in episode 8 or 7 if it was planned. There is no set up for his return at all.
@@magnet4214 i don't think he meant that in a negative way, there's literally not a single star wars fan that would have a single bad thing to say about lord ian
He adored and definitely enjoyed playing the Senate. He even knows the memes. You can tell from his smile he's enjoyed doing it for over what, 30 plus years since Empire?
beeninjenek 88 Yeah, I must admit that if there’s one thing I didn’t like from The Rise of Skywalker is that it didn’t explain Palpatine’s return, let alone that he was then revealed to be a clone, as such idea had already been used in Tom Veitch’s Dark Empire. Indeed, I would have preferred that his return was partly the midi-chlorian manipulation to tie in with the prequels.
Just Ian’s sweet reaction to getting to play him again made it worth it. I get that the movie is super flawed but I just love the character so much that I will take any chance to see him and he was so epic in this movie
@@wwb16 yeah that’s kind of what Anakin was suppose to do, bring balance to the force, was the force in balance when all the Jedi were executed and the empire rose? Exactly
Bringing balance to the force means destroying the sith, but it is impossible to destroy evil forever (at least in the Star Wars universe, er, galaxy), so it was inevitable that they would rise again. Anakin did bring balance to the force, if only temporarily.
actually am still waiting for the Vader behind the scenes from Rogue One; would have been so cool to see the making of the brutal hallway scene: Vader going berserk and the film production having an orgasm
Disney: "You! You are the main character! The one who carried the Prequels!" Ian: "In order to be a main character you must embrace ALL its aspects, not just the narrow minded dogmatic view of the Midquels." Disney Pauses. Ian: "Are you going to kill me?" Disney: "I would certainly like to!" Ian: "I know you would... But with Rose and the Purple Haired lady, you need me even more now than you did when they created Jar Jar..."
@@MLBlue30 I quite enjoyed the pre-disney star wars, Women included. Identity Politics paid for by the Pentagon doesn't make for good movies. Deal with it...
"Within about 30 seconds of discussing that Idea we just knew it was the right idea" wow, a full 30 seconds to REALLY flesh out and discuss the repercussions of doing such a thing. Bravo. You know some people would have thought of it for just a single moment, but you really gave it the good ole 30 second though, nice
"This is an ancien place, maybe the place where the sith really began in the very beginning" You mean Korriban ? Do they really know star wars univers. Or they just guessed things.
When they described Exegol as ine of the birthplaces of the sith I was just kinda like "It's almost like you guys had 20 years of source material that you threw away, but still came to similar conclusions"
"Within about 30 seconds of discussing the idea we knew it was the right one" I mean I knew they didn't put a lot of effort into the plot, but I didn't realise it was THAT bad.
To be fair, that's a pretty competent amount of time in the formation of most ideas that have become great cinematic achievements. David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino practice some form of that idea of spontaneous creation. Make no mistake: I agree Rise of Skywalker is bad, but I don't think it's because of bad ideas. I simply think it's bad because of poor execution of great ideas.
Sequels production wise are excellent, but the ideas behind that trilogy have no substance lol. They simply invented on the fly, Last Jedi subverted expectations on the whim and then Rise of Skywalker was made as a damage control and pretended some things didn't happen, while correcting a few others at the same time. It's a total mess, there was no plan at all and it was one big improv. And yes some can do spontaneous creation, too bad Disney can't and whoever they hired couldn't as well.
"within 30 seconds of discussion that idea we knew it was the right idea" should have thought 30 seconds longer to realise there were better ways to go
@Pierat matt smith was ment to play a young darth sidious and rey and ben would of had a lightsaber battle with him, probs better than yoda vs sidious fight, but nope we get lightning hands tbh someone has a big fetish for lightning hands were was the lightsaber fight!!! sutch a failure 😒😒😒😒
The fact Kathleen and JJ had the nerve to lie and say they planned Palpatine to return all along. When all you need to do is to watch the behind the scene videos to find out that's not true. Shows an overall lack of integrity.
No? George Lucas always planned it for Palpatine to return. Maybe they just didn't tell Ian that he was going to return. However, I do think they should have showed it a bit better than just adding some quote in Episode 8 ("Fulfil your destiny"), as it would have made so much more sense. And they should have kept Abrams and given him full creative control, or more than he had (very limited).
Actually they've never said it was set in stone. More like it was in the works, it was talked about from the start. You could say planned, but written in pencil, so to speak. But how and when to do it, they hadn't landed on yet.
You say that like that’s not how George used to think aswell. The reason he didn’t want to kill Han in return of the Jedi was because he didn’t think there was money in dead Han toys.
Josh Hunt making a few decisions based on action figure sales vs making an entire trilogy based on action figure sales. I’ll let you figure out what the difference is.
@@SuperPhoenix411 I'll remind you that George cut out Han Solo's death from Return of the Jedi to sell Han toys, thus leaving him without any kind of an arc in the film whatsoever.
Ian is one of the best things to ever happen to Star Wars, we’ll never see him again as Palpatine and I’m going to miss him, thank you Ian for giving it all in the 5 movies we saw you in
Should have been Luke vs The Emperor to give it more meaning, but the two numbskulls Rian and Kathleen killed that one with her self insert agenda character.
Dave Wilson Naa Anakins force ghost 100%. Or even Anakin, Luke and Ben. This is my only real issue with this film. Palpatine is the real villain throughout the entire saga. The entire SKYWALKER saga. So why the hell did they choose to get palpatines “grand daughter” who’s not even really that anymore to kill him and then take the skywalker name. Anakin, Luke, Ben vs Palpatine. That would’ve been epic
I’m ok with the way he died, I just think the « I’m all the Jedi » and then the second lightsaber felt cringe. In my opinion, it should have been Ben that defeated the emperor. See Ben not only redeemed, but also defeating the dark side, and TRULY finishing what his grandfather started. A full redemption.
Yeah well, Korriban wasn't originally the Sith planet either. It was Ziost. So what makes Korriban more likely to be where they began? The whole idea seems silly anyway. Who would even now what the first planet was?
I loved Palpatine and everything on Exegol. Finally the sequels gave us a place like nothing we've seen in SW before - dark, creepy, ancient and weird. It's the same reason the Jedi temples in Rebels worked so well. That's what teh future movies, whatever they are about, need more of - strange, huge, mysterious places we know little about but can imagine a lot.
