One more thing... this show makes people FULLY invest in the characters. THAT, much like love, will make you truly feel ALL the emotions. We leave ourselves vulnerable BECAUSE we care so much. This is what truly great shows do. Battlestar Galactica is a truly great show.

I think with the whole baltar/boomer situation, if he was talking to anybody else, anybody human, then what he said to her would have been super messed up, like cruelly messed up. But given that gaius is actually the only person who knows without question that boomer is a cylon, I think he's actually doing her a huge kindness. He knows that if she dies she'll download and then she'll know the truth and she'll be with her own kind and there'll be no more confusion, no fear of hurting anyone. He can't really tell her all that without exposing himself of course. But I really believe he's trying to help her.

I don't, he was helping himself as usual, if Boomer kills herself then her inner Cylon doesn't get to blow up Galactica. Gaius was self-preserving in this episode, as he tends to do. Also is "downloading" known about by this point or have you just let a spoiler slip to the Gals?

As an Ex-Mormon, I am absolutely fascinated by the Theology of Battlestar Galactica (which is largely based on Mormonism). Mormons believe that Gods originally came from a planet called Kolob, and Kobol is just an anagram for Kolob. There's actually a Mormon hymn that I really like called If You Could Hie to Kolob. Part of it says "do you think you could ever through all eternity, find out the generation where Gods began to be?". There was also a reference to Mormonism in the previous episode, Colonial Day. In the episode the presiding government of the Colonies is called The Quorum of Twleve. The presiding leadership of the LDS Church is called The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

I believe Glenn A. Larson the creator of the original BSG was Mormon and based the story loosely on LDS theology.

Actual theology in sci-fi is very rare. The notion that there are beings beyond our ability to truly comprehend, who do things we can't explain, is almost non-existent in the genre. Humans typically end up at the top of the food chain, cuz we're humans. I mean, how did humanity crawl out of the post-apocalyptic muck and quickly become the preeminent species in the civilized galaxy in the Star Trek universe? Cuz we're just that damned special. In sci-fi, humans are the closest thing there are to gods. To borrow from movie song, "We are the ones, the only ones, we are the gods of kingdom come."

Dr Who has the Doctor themselves and beyond them the Tardis, Which is alive and even the Doctor doesn't fully understand.. 🤔

This episode starts a series of episodes that I collectively call "The Kobol Saga". It is some of the best storytelling that I have ever seen on TV. I always envy reactors who get to this point, and get to experience it all for the first time.

My take on Gauis's motives in his talk with Boomer is that, he knew that some kind of danger was approaching Galactica, knew that she was a likely way it happens, and wanted to protect himself by stopping her.

While I agree with you that the way Lee reacts to Starbuck is inappropriate, I...also like that it's the way it's portrayed. This is a show about humans (and machines that act like humans) in all their aspects, including the ugly ones. Lee and Kara's relationship (like their relationships with everyone else around them) is complicated and messy and sweet and ugly and if they suddenly started acting appropriately, while it'd be more comfortable, it'd be considerably less true to their flawed characters. No, Lee shouldn't have reacted that way...but people DO react that way to that kind of hurt. No, Kara shouldn't have punched him...but people DO lash out when they feel cornered (and, really, it can't be a surprise that Starbuck, of all people, chooses to lash out in a physical fashion, can it?) BSG is a show about finding the little bits of beauty in humanity...but needing to wade through all the awful parts to get to it. It's tough, but worth it.

I think you handled the abuse issue perfectly. I'm a victim of emotional abuse by a woman. It is an entirely different dynamic than men abusing women. Abuse of men is more rare, but it is a thing and os enormously emmasculating for a man to admit it. Abuse of another is never acceptable. I appreciate the dialog and your addressing this. And am loving your reaction to this, what I believe is the greatest TV ever. Can't wait for the next. And buckle up. The roller coaster does not stop ever.

This whole show is going to be triggering for you guys. BSG the reboot is all about what it means to be human. Every episode is about the worst of humanity fighting against trying to be something new. Do we repeat a destructive cycle or do we expand the meaning of human and choose a different course. I would never suggest this show to people who are traumatized by heavy topics. They really take this show to the edge and honestly walked over it.

My take: It's always (at least in large part) self preservation for Gaius. He knows Boomer is a sleeper agent and whatever her next sabotage tactic might be could hurt him or take him out. Getting her off the ship helps him (and everyone else).

Small point - Lee is Starbuck's CO, it's incredibly appropriate to call out her behaviour if it is below standard. I've seen this series a whole bunch of times and I still don't know what to make of what Baltar says to Boomer - I _think_ that means that scene is well written.

Here's a fun bit of trivia for you (assuming a given value of "fun"): "frak" wasn't originally meant to be necessarily a direct one-for-one substitute for any other word. The change happened organically, when one of the actors (Nicki Clyne, playing Specialist Cally) called another character a "motherfrakker" in an ad-lib. After that, the obvious direct one-for-one substitution was wholeheartedly embraced by writers and cast alike. And by fans, for that matter.

Great conversation about abuse of men. Even with all the resources available for women it is still a challenge to break free of the psychology. Men have significantly fewer resources available to them in addition to societies expectations for men there is a lot of stigma admitting you ended up in that position or even asking for help. Regardless of age, gender, and social status, humans find themselves in dynamics outside their control. It's important to recognize those scenario's and ensure anyone in them is presented with the help they need. hopefully those people are capable of accepting that help and extracting themselves from such dangerous situations.

the reason for Six snaping a neck in first episode, is act of mercy, to spare a quick end, because later a nuclear blast followed that day.. and if you watch Six again while she walks away in that moment, she is in pain and tears

Strange act of mercy. A few moments of pain and confusion for a baby and several hours of agony for a family when a few hours later all of them would have been vaporised. That's the same sort of mercy as stabbing a dog to death to save it from the experience of being put to sleep.

RE your abuse discussion at the end, there's a great British show called I May Destroy you about a woman processing the aftermath of her SA on a night out. In one episode her gay male friend is also assaulted by a date, and the show contrasts the differing experiences the two of them have when reporting their experience to the police. She gets two female police officers who give her a sensitive hearing and support/advice, he gets almost nothing - the cops treat him like an inconvenience making a fuss over nothing. I don't know how true to life it is but it feels authentic.

Omg, i love your breakdowns. I never really thought of Gaius in an abusive relationship with 6. That is so insightful. I can't wait for you two to progress through the series...."things are gonna get dicey", but take heart, i believe the "wives of helldivers" support group have cracked the code on how to deal with difficult situations, perhaps if we knew of someone to reach out to for support? ;)

I always worry when someone from Australia sends things to people over the seas to try. We eat some...questionable things when growing up that you really need to have gotten used to as a child. Lee didn't get to be mad at Starbucks from a relationship stance. But but he was still jealous. So he took it out on her military wise. Gaius is the vice president, and she is a Lieutenant in the military, which is why he brought up the Major. In MY head canon, it was a big deal for her, so when he mentioned it, she got triggered and punched him.

See, I'm not sure that Musk Sticks are the best representation of Australian candy (lollies). Your cheese chips will be surpassed by Twisties, but the most quintessential Australian snack/sweet treat would be the Tim Tam. They are a chocolate coated, cream filled wafers of goodness, these heaven-sent rectangular treats are best enjoyed beside a campfire, opposing corners nibbled off, and Port (the fortified wine) sucked through them.

Gaius, knowing that Boomer really was Cylon, gave her permission to kill herself. He doesn't know about resurrection. He made the right decision, though. She could have ended the threat by eliminating herself. Re: Caprica Six breaking the baby's neck. You do understand she was showing mercy, right? Or did you want the baby to live through nuclear devastation?

Adama in Part 2 of this two-part episode. 🙂 Plus, to a degree, what happens on the planet, if memory serves, in light of something that happens in the movie.

FYI Gals, after the next episode (the end of season 1) you will have reached the point in the show where you could play the base game of FFG's "Battlestar Galactica" Board Game with no danger of spoilers (assuming you avoid the expansions 😉). Would love to see you gals play a 5-6 player social deduction / strategy game of BSG. You would LUV it! 😁 [Edit: I had a look at my copy of the board game and yeah you have about 2 or 3 more episodes to go before there are absolutely NO SPOILERS in the base game. And given that you might see some of the game expansion images which might ruin future characters, events & stories... you might wanna wait till you're finished the whole series. But I highly recommend the game! I could totally see Kat playing Starbuck... and perhaps Paula playing Roslin! ;) ]

You mentioned the crewman who ended up in the brig because he covered for Galen Tyrol and Boomer's relationship? You might have recognized that he was with the group in the raptor that was going down in Kobol. There is a deleted scene from this episode where Chief Tyrol convinces Commander Adama to let this crewman ("Socinous", if I remember correctly) out of the brig, because he was needed for this mission to Kobol.

21:45 The Domestic & Sexual Violence talk against men was interesting & is needed more than is currently done because it goes largely ignored/untalked about & as you commented it is treated differently from the other way around. Years ago I saw a video about it from professionals that deals with these issues & some of what they said was actually sickening, not their views but the response men got when reporting it. One said that when a man went to a police station he was told by the male officer to 'Man up, hit her back & stand up for himself' while another said that when reporting at his house a female officer burst out laughing. The world is not black & white or one sided but we all tend to see it that way with the prevailing view men are the abusers & women the victims & either don't want to see or just ignore the opposite is also true. The 'Me Too' movement is needed to expose the issue but has also hurt a lot of innocent men but there needs to a 'Me Too' movement for men to expose that issue allow men to come forward.

Gaius' arc has a lot of highs and lows but overall, he's a good shout for best and most fascinating character in the show, with maybe only Tigh and Tyrol coming close. That's not to say Laura, Adama, Sharon, Helo, Kara or Lee aren't compelling or don't have their moments, just that Gaius is S-rank to everyone else's As.

Seeing your reactions to Boomer and her "attempt" 😟... ... I had to take a few minutes. When i originally watched this show, I remember feeling a kinda love for these characters, and, as you've probably seen in the comments, things get rough. My friends back then would be like, "Duuuude. Bro. Dude chill, It's just a tv show" I was flooed by this revelation, but nonetheless the hurt is real.

Just to let you know about military do's and do nots, as an officer she is not supposed to have relations with a superior officer or in this case a member of the government like a VP. Apollo had every right and duty to call her out on it. The same happened with the Chief and Sharon. I know feelings are your go to, but this is not about feelings.

This show almost ruined Sci Fi for me, because it takes you to places that other shows never get near. Starbuck never considers herself anything less that the best, so Lee treated her as an equal in that punch exchange. It's shocking based on our morals... but considering Starbuck and Apollo, it's not far from their "normal" bizarro relationship. Agree on Lee's immature attitude about Starbuck's personal life. He lashed out in a ridiculous fashion. This show will play with all your expectations. It's an amazing journey. Buckle up.

I always assumed Gaius talked Boomer into what she did because he knew she'd be resurrected and not actually die. Then she'd know who she truly is and be at peace.

Consider also, is Gaius really being empathetic to the plight worse than death? Or is it self-serving because its less likely for others to find out he lied if she's gone. Is it both? Or does he tell himself it's both?

Re Baltars talk to Sharon, remember he’s the only person in the fleet who actually knows she’s a Cylon, she’s even not sure herself. So imagine if it’s discovered by the fleet what she is, especially after he gave her the green light, so Ive always believed he wanted her to kill herself to keep his secret and integrity safe.😊

Interesting to hear your comments on abuse and the different reactions based on gender. It took me 5 attempts to leave a marriage where I was subjected to narcissistic abuse (isolation, mental abuse, monetary abuse, etc) but when I did make the break I was accused by my wife of being the abuser. My lawyers, and police, told me that I was would be fighting an uphill battle as society and the courts lean heavily towards automatically believing the woman. So I gave up and accepted isolation from my children (on a no admittance basis).
