We have some up and coming projects which need starch and as we don't like to waste anything we thought other than composting the potato skins we would see if there was enough starch in them to make extracting it worth while.
We used about 3x the amount of skins shown in the video to end up with the amount we did. However we have made some more since following the exact steps in this video, only to find we didn't have as much the second time.
The only reason we can come up with is that the first lot of potatoes were from the garden and we were a bit late getting them in.

Not sure if you guys are still interested, but you should theoretically be able to use this starch to make dextrin if you're willing to wash it and dry it properly first. You need to get it as close to a pure white starch as you can. Put a thin layer of the starch on a baking sheet and place it in your oven at 400f, stirring every 20-30 minutes and rotating the sheet until all the starch turns a golden brown. Most people use this method with corn starch rather than potato starch so I'm not sure how it will turn out, but it could actually be an improvement due to potato starch (usually) having fewer fats contaminating it compared to corn starch. Here's a video of someone making dextrin for fireworks using corn starch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BUyOoPrDqgk.html

I can potatoes we grow. La Soda red potatoes. A lot of folks here in southern US call them new potatoes. Anyway on to my inquiry... In the bottom of the jars there's white starch mixed with the canning water. Everything I've looked up says potato starch is used from raw potatoes. Do you ( or anyone else) know if this cooked starch can be used for anything? I'm kinda hoping it can. I was thinking of using a dehydrator to dry it. Any thoughts about this?
@TheOffGridFamily
@TheOffGridFamily 2 года назад
I honestly don't know. I have always used raw starch. I would dehydrate it and see what it's like. If you decided to give it a try then please leave a comment to tell me how it went. Good luck

Excuse me, is the fina product (starch) pure or mixed with other components??? I mean the quality of this starch
@TheOffGridFamily
@TheOffGridFamily 5 лет назад
As far as I know it is pure starch. There may be some other components in there but that is because I didn't clean it properly. It should be all starch

If you just keep dissolving it in water evaporating it and then do it again. It will clean it more and more.

Does steaming the peel removes starch content? 4. Is it possible to use that starch for glue making? thankyouu so muchhh
