Starcraft: 7 years in 7 minutes

A look back at the many changes Blizzard brought to the game of Starcraft. Also includes a few highlights and my memorable Starcraft moments from the past. As well as speculation on the future of Starcraft...
Music is all from the Pure Pwnage Soundtrack, I figured since a new episode was released there'd be no better music to use!
Some of the dates of the patch releases are unofficial. Blizzard didn't keep an official file of when they released patches- some fansites did however they aren't credible sources.
Also, Iccup season 1 was in 2007 not 2006. The text in the movie is misleading.

I remember at one point Terran was able to lift, land and slide the CC right in front of the minerals, which skyrocketed the income. But the coolest bug was that zerg used to be able to instantly transform zerglings to mutalisks with the help of a lurker; the best part was that the speed and attack speed upgrades for zerglings made mutalisks made from lings ridiculously OP... I think 1.4 or 1.5 fixed those.

@TheVanillatech
@TheVanillatech 8 лет назад
+JustAnotherGuyWhoMakesStuff The story in SCII is far more fleshed out. If you add up all the in engine scenes and CGI out of WOL, HOTS and LOTV it comes to a full feature movie. I have to agree though I still check the "original broodwar" options in the music menu whenever I'm playing SCII. The music is legendary. It's on my MP3 player too! XD

Blizzard is slowly turning into EA, except their releases aren't buggy as hell. They basically just rerelease small batches of new content and expect gamers to pay for brand new games out of it. Actually almost all of the big game devs have turned into that except valve and games that do microtransactions like League of Legends/DOTA, etc.

People were not afraid of imbalances in SC2. We were afraid of a sloppy job. Ridiculous, toy-like units, low quality unit sounds and an immature plotline. It was also a widespread fear that due to automatization of certain elements in the game it would lose its competitive edge. Our fears came true...SC2 is nothing like the original, not in single player, not in multiplayer. It will fade sooner than people stop playing SC1 competitively.

Even the arcade is a shadow of the former arcade. the only difference between sc2 and every other "new" rts to me is just my FPS. lol. As a zerg main in broodwar, not having my favorite unit.. Lurker(that under 20 supply duo lurker rush)/Devourer was nail in the coffin for me.

Fact of the matter is Even SC1 Was imbalance and had major issues, the differance was in the responce and how it grew. Blizzard North is not Blizzard Activision, Point is people claim SC1 as a GOD AMONG RTS. It isnt, it had HORRIBLE flaws tooked about 7-9 Years to become balance, So why do we like it? Becouse Blizzard North Cared and did there best to keep balacing / patching it even 7+ years after the game Release Thats why. now a days? your lucky if they care past year 2. heck its starting to become past year 1.
@HSSLNG
@HSSLNG 9 лет назад
I don't think you realize how hard it is to balance a game like SC2 out. And to be honest, you can rarely tell from statistics which races are better than others (I can legitimately only think of the broodlord/infestor-era, where zerg was considerably better than the other races). Top players of the world are always leveled out. So is master's league and grandmaster's league.
@THAC0MANIC
@THAC0MANIC 9 лет назад
Terkel1994 Its simple to figure it out just quit looking at High tier only, Look at lower tier and medium tier game play, They evolve and change just like the Elite games, I'll talk about SC1, Zerg was imbra / OP but if you where a good enough player 'Elite' It wasnt NEARLY as op as people think it was and could be beaten just fine and dandy making it look 'balance' Honestly SC1 Blizzard North tended to care about ALL levels of skill not just the 'Elites' Becouse they knew it would create a false Screen. One reason why Blizzard north is Epic, and Blizzard Activision is just meh, More about greed then anything eles.
@Wesley-ri7ok
@Wesley-ri7ok 9 лет назад
THAC0MANIC Not sure what you're talking about, I got the game day 1 and we were hit with patches at least once a month sometimes twice. Yea, the patches died down but that's because the game is mostly balanced.
@thepowlow3521
@thepowlow3521 9 лет назад
untrue. The final balance patch was on 2001: 3 years after the release of brood war. After that, balance was never touched again. Don't mislead people by your bandwagon facts. Brood war was NEVER balanced. Koreans made it competitive, despite its imbalances.

I just find it impressive that Blizzard has the respectable attitude to constantly improve their game, unlike most game companies that simply put out a game and release some DLCs and are pretty much done with improvements to the game and don't bother to update it after that. EDIT: However, if I had one gripe is that I wish they paid more attention to the story and lore. You have to wonder if the story writers even knew the SC1's lore at all or they were simply told the gist of it and wrote something down haphazardly. Also, SCBW felt more believable if that makes any sense for a sci-fi game such as Starcraft. A dark story built on betrayal and survival unlike SC2's story about the love between Raynor and Sarah. Of course, this is all preference, but just my two cents.

That is agreeable. Good game design, especially for a RTS campaign, is casually fitting in tutorial with gameplay and preferably a story to tie everything together.

Epsilon I for one would say in StarCraft BW we fell in love with the main characters and factions, in StarCraft 2 the secondaries took all the love. Agria Colonists, Tosh, Dehaka, Abathur, the Primal Zerg, the Purifiers and my personal favourite: Alarak and the Tal'darim. I for one loved how their secondary histories worked out with the main ones

Zealots used to have 80/80 instead of the 60/100 they have now. Psionic Storm used to deal over 120 damage total. The Scout use to have 90/130 instead of 100/150, and it’s air-to-air was 24 before it was changed to 28 damage. Carriers HP was originally at 250 with a base armor of 3. The Disruption Web (like shown in the video) used to remain in effect for much longer. Photon Cannons originally dealt Explosive type damage (exactly like the dragoon). The Dragoon’s upgraded range was shorter than the Battlecruiser’s standard range. The Goliath’s ground attack power was originally at 10. The Floor Gun Trap’s attack power is (in a way) evidence of this since it has the same Twin Autocannons attack. The Goliath’s ground attack range was also shorter than it is now. Alan Schezar’s Goliath still retains the original range. The Dropship was slower than it is now. Originally, it had the same speed as a non-upgraded Protoss shuttle. Now it can outrun units with Science Vessel’s speed or slower. The Wraith’s air-to-air damage was originally at 15, before it was changed to 20. Valkyries originally did 5 damage per missile, before being changed to 6 per missile. The Battlecruiser’s base armor was originally at 2 instead of 3. The Terran Command Center had to have its health display red (below 510 HP) before being able to be infested by a Queen. This was changed to just below 750 HP. The Sunken Colony was originally at 400 HP, 30 damage, and 0 armor. This would eventually be changed to 300 HP, 40 damage, and 2 armor. Spore Colonies (at least I faintly remember) dealt Explosive type damage before being change to Normal type (just like with the Photon Cannon). The Terran Campaign Rebel Yell (Episode I) originally had 12 missions (I believe this was the original vanilla game before any patches started). In the Zerg Mission 7 (The Culling) Kerrigan was originally in this mission before being removed from it (probably by later patches).

This is something of my personal experience, but in earlier versions of the game, Zerg Queens in Eye of the Storm (Protoss Mission 10 of Episode III) were able to uses spawn broodings on the Dark Templar WHILE HAVING NO VISION of them AT ALL (including no DETECTION from Overlords or Observers that had Parasites on them).

lol at the comments made here. people seem to think that its easy to make a great game. SC1 is one of the greatest games ever made. the reason why its so rare is because its so fucking hard to produce a perfect mix of gameplay, longevity, mass appeal etc, not to mention funding, working with multiple companies across many years. SC2 is far from perfect, but to say that its an extreme disappointment and blizzard fucked up is pretty harsh. the same for D3. while i agree the gap between D2 and D3 is definitely visible, D3 is still pretty good. and getting rid of the AH was a great move.

@Basaltq
@Basaltq 9 лет назад
akli maron And they only took lan away since they were afraid of piracy. Well they were correct, sort of, back in the day lan parties were the place to pirate games, but afterwards people bought the games to play online. There's so many games I've bought since our lan group used to play them. Blizzard has gone downhill ever since WOW was released.
@aklimaron7398

Basaltq most pirates are from 3rd world countries who can't afford the original game. and there actually is a non-official system that allows lan in sc2 (starfriend) sc2 sold because of the appeal to the casual and fancy graphics

I remember 2009/2010 before SC2 came out I was still in highschool and felt like a little kid on christmas. Everyday me and my friends would talk about the game and about news, videos or leaks that came out. Then I remember stumbling upon channels like HDstarcraft and Husky who uploaded beta videos and I was addicted. Everyday I come from school, grab popcorn, and watch beta tournaments and commentaries. God those were good times. Now I'm 24 with family. So much has changed, but it all feels like yesterday. It's a shame SC2 faded so quickly. I even recall many top Korean pros never transferred to SC2 because all the money were still in brood war. What SC2 did do is give birth to esports in the western world, and became the grandfather to Dota, LOL and counter strike. Even though it died in a couple of years, I'll always view SC2 as a game that gave birth and recognition to esports worldwide.

There is an even older version (1.00 if I remember correctly) that I believe is only available without Brood War that has the mineral, gas and supply numbers in-game colored white instead of green and has only Melee and Use Map Settings as game options for Play Custom. I don't know if there are any more differences apart from that compared to the first version you showed here. That is the version I first played Starcraft on and I still have it, with the embossed box, massive manual, promos for WarCraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans before it got cancelled and everything! :D

I played it dude! The original Starcraft when it was first released dude. I even played the demo dude. There was only 3 missions; Introduction tutorial map, in-corridor battle, and the last one is with full-base building with Arcturus Mengsk in Siege Tank colored white in troops box marking as general. Its graphics were the best in those times of era. I replayed it over and over even though it's only a demo. I anxious to get the full game at that moment. 300 Minerals Scout, Turret 100 Minerals. But the real game turns out to be much harder so I didn't play it at full potential, haha..

I won't say that the first Starcraft is the best RTS ever, but it would be foolish to deny that it's the most influential game to the RTS genre. SC1 was to RTS what Super Mario 64 was to 3D platformers, what Street Fighter 2 was to fighting games, what Half-Life was to FPS. Someone who plays them for the first time now will undeniably find them clunky and outdated, but they changed everything we knew about gaming.

Actually a lot of people don't realize that the same is the case with the Diablo games.... 2 was quite far from perfect as well upon release and it took a lot of patches and years to be the game that they always compare with Diablo 3...
@icepic21
@icepic21 8 лет назад
That's a good point, and I agree actually. Diablo II 1.0 was so much different from 1.13, especially with the expansion involved! and with Diablo 3, it's the same case: kinda meh at launch, then after a series of patches and a great expansion, so much more fun to play with friends and so much more satisfying with the dungeon crawling and loot collecting! Goes to show that they don't stop with good enough: they keep working until it's where they want it to be, and listen to feedback too!

The races in Sc2 are too wildly different. Brood War balance worked because the races all still followed the same overall mechanic -- you have a production building, and you build from it, rallying the constructed unit wherever. The races followed strict archetypes; tank, glass cannon, and in between. When they introduced Inject Larva and Warpgates, the game was broken at that point. It meant that Protoss could no longer be a tanky race and Zerg could no longer be a race of glass cannons. Warpgate: - Mitigates the opponent's defender's advantage. - Makes attack paths and map design largely irrelevant. - Gives the strongest race arguably the strongest harass. - Makes all-inning ultimately the most efficient way to play the race. - Necessitated the need for the Sentry and the Mothership Core, both of which are poorly designed units. Inject Larva: - Forces Zerg to play reactionary, pigeonholing style. - Necessitates Zerg having incomplete or somewhat ineffectual tiers on their tech tree. - Makes Zerg overly difficult to beat without heavily exploiting timings, which has more to do with mechanical limitations in-game than skill. - Breaks Zerg's defender's advantage due to not having consolidated space for their production like Terran or Protoss. I say this as a Zerg player. Sc2 is and always will be broken, regardless of what LotV brings. The imbalances are fundamental to the game's design. We just have to hope that StarCraft III fixes these things.
@FrostyTheArchon
@FrostyTheArchon 9 лет назад
"Warpgate: - Removes defender's advantage from the opponent." - This is a common misconception about Warpgate. It doesn't remove the advantages of being a defender, it removes some of the disadvantages of being an attacker. You (as the defender) still get your Photon Overcharge, the ability to put down Spines, wall off, have closer rallies, be able to exploit the terrain like ramps, etc. "- Makes attack paths and map design largely irrelevant." Map design is hardly ever irrelevant. Certain maps lend themselves to Warpgate attacks far more than others. "- Makes all-inning ultimately the most efficient way to play the race." Maybe if you're just wanting to try and get into Masters AFAP. But that's pretty much the same with any race, assuming you have good micro/multitasking. Once you get to high masters(ish), almost everyone knows how to hold Protoss 2-base attacks fairly consistently (assuming they're scouted), and it becomes far less reliable to just all-in every game. "- Necessitated the need for the Sentry and the Mothership Core, both of which are poorly designed units." I've always felt that the Sentry was really the core of the problem when it comes to Protoss early/mid game, and not the Warpgate mechanic. While Warpgate can be a pretty powerful tool, it's not something that's superimbabroken. "Inject Larva: - Forces Zerg to play reactionary, pigeonholing style." This may of been true 6 months to a year ago, but not today... at least when it comes to ZvP (ZvT and ZvZ have remained fairly static). Outside of all-ins, Zerg is actually the one dictating the pace of the game, and Protoss are the ones who are having to play "reactionary". This is because right now ZvP is filled with hard counters and few soft ones. Couple this with the larvae mechanic and as Protoss it's very easy to simply die to a tech you didn't see coming. Zerg went into Mutas and you don't have Phoenix? Get fucked. Zerg went mass Roach/Hydra/Viper and you don't have HT? Get fucked. Zerg went Ultra/Infestor/Queen and you don't have a bunch of Immortals, Archons, and HT? Get fucked. There are so many viable tech routes that can outright kill an unprepared Protoss right now it's kinda nuts. "- Necessitates Zerg having incomplete or somewhat ineffectual tiers on their tech tree." I'm not really sure what you mean by "ineffectual tiers". A Zerg can be dangerous at any tier. "- Makes Zerg overly difficult to beat without heavily exploiting timings, which has more to do with mechanical limitations in-game than skill." This is kinda true. A late game Zerg with a giant bank is a very scary thing due to what I mention before about hard counters coupled with larvae. What I've found to be the best way to deal with Zerg in the late game is to be (as usual) constantly scouting, and constantly trying to engage/harass. If you prevent the Zerg from getting that giant bank, they become much more manageable. "Sc2 is and always will be broken, regardless of what LotV brings. The imbalances are fundamental to the game's design. We just have to hope that StarCraft III fixes these things." That's a pretty cynical attitude. I'm not going to say Starcraft 2 is perfectly balanced because it isn't. It is however balanced to the point that 99.9% of the time if you lose, it's because you fucked up, and not because of balance issues.

@FrostyTheArchon
@FrostyTheArchon 9 лет назад
IncredibleGoliath "Your comment does nothing but take Nick Hiebert's points out of context, mess with semantics, and even intentionally miss words so you can respond to nuanced statements as if they were generalizations." The points he made were quoted in full and then responded to. I never took anything out of context nor did I "miss words" in order to exploit a point (at least, I'm not aware of doing such a thing, feel free to point out any examples of me doing this as I obviously missed them). If anyone wasn't being nuanced in this discussion, it would be Nick. Many of his points about balance were cliche, shallow, and not thought out well. For example, his claim that Warpgate removes the defenders advantage. This is something I hear a lot, but is actually incorrect, as I pointed out. Removing the advantages of being a defender and removing the disadvantages of being an attacker (namely, longer rallies) are VERY different, and to think they're not, or to think they're just semantics shows a basic lack of understanding when it comes to the game. "You must have put so many hours into SC2 that you can't accept the core premises of a comparison between the two games." - I would never claim that SC2 doesn't have balance issues, or even fundamentally flawed systems whether in comparison to Brood War, or simply taken as a stand alone game. I just take issue with people making overly simplistic, or blatantly false claims to explain why it's broken/imbalanced. This kind of shallow thinking is incredibly prevalent in the Starcraft community, and to be quite honest, it gets tiring.
@TheWALOS
@TheWALOS 9 лет назад
FrostyTheArchon Actually, most of your post was just splitting hairs and rewording, haha.
@FrostyTheArchon
@FrostyTheArchon 9 лет назад
IncredibleGoliath "Your first point "removing defenders advantage = removing attackers disadvantage" was just playing with semantics: when people refer to defenders advantage they have always been referring to things like longer rallies" Defender's advantage makes up much more than just shorter rallies for you compared to your opponent, which was my point. You can't just say that Warpgate removes defender's advantage, full stop. Well I guess you can, but you're not going to be taken seriously by anyone worth being taken seriously by. "Your second point ignores the word "largely" so you can pretend he was generalizing about all map features." - I never said, nor implied that he claimed that Warpate made the map terrain/design always irrelevant. I am honestly baffled as to how you could come to such a conclusion. "Your third ignored that he was comparing with Broodwar, where all-ins were less potent, so you could just waffle about getting to Masters. Etc." - He claimed it was the most efficient way to play the race, not that it was more efficient than in Broodwar. Which, once you're up against people who know what they're doing, it simply isn't. Again, unless your goal is to grind up to Master league as fast as you can. But that comes more from the fact that all-inning is more time efficient as opposed to win/loss efficient. The fact that I'm having to clarify these things to you suggests that either your reading comprehension skills aren't up to par, or that you're so biased towards Broodwar over Starcraft 2 that you're letting it get in the way of actually understanding what people are saying. Next time, try taking a deep breaths, calm yourself down, and then read.

TrojanPiece disagree. with different mechanics, different things should be added into the game. i dont know what specificaly but something else. i just dislike the fact that sc2 is treated the same as sc1. most of the things used in competative play were little bugs that were left over from the sc1 map editor. Since we can have more variety and more things to try, people should be more creative and treat sc2 as its own game and not try to follow in the foot steps of sc1. lets be real no matter how amazing the game was (i was in korea for a while when sc1 was big and was alot of fun) sc2 had so many chances to add alot to it but the didnt.
