The Staresso Portable Coffee Maker - Revisited. - Product Links - Staresso - geni.us/fxXaXm / Hario Mill - geni.us/BICJV / Full Website Review - gadgetviper.com/staresso-revie...
My Previous Review video - • STARESSO - Portable Es... (If you want to see how to use the Staresso to make a Cappuccino)
In this video, I demonstrate how to use the Staresso as a manual Nespresso machine. I also discuss how to prepare whole coffee beans and which is the best pre-ground coffee to use.
After 9 months of using the product, I've developed a consistent method for producing a great quality Espresso with a decent Crema.
I hope you enjoy the video....

After watching your video about Staresso and nanopresso, I chose Staresso as it is nicer to drink coffee in a hot glass cup. Thanks for your great video.

Thanks for a good review/ with some instruction! I have had the Handpresso for about 5 years, and it has saved me during travel in hotels, but the ESE pods were hard to get so I wanted to try using the Nespresso pods. My son gave me the Staresso today for my birthday. The instructions didn't explain anything about how to use the Nespresso pods, though, so your video was essential. I also got a good supply of the solid bottom Nes pods with it, so now I will need to find some with the foil bottom. I also immediately modified the top plunger since if your fingers are wet or slippery, it could be hard to twist it to release the plunger. I added two tiny stick-on rubber feet so I can always get it open easily. No more fear of hotel room coffee. (Plus, many of my clients have Nespresso pods in their offices so I don't need to worry about running out when I'm traveling on business.)

I was really happy to find this video. I've been using my Staresso with ground coffee but thought I'd try the pods. On the Staresso site I found no help and pods are completely new to me. I ruined one before finding this video. This video was clear and complete. I could see that I did everything correctly (leaving in the stainless cup & putting in the pod flat side down) BUT I had not poked holes in my Peet's espresso pod. Once I did that, I had fabulous results. I also appreciated the tips for camping. We like backpacking. Half a Staresso and some pods are a little more bulk and weight than our instant coffee packs, but I'm convinced it will be worth it. Thanks for a very helpful video!

Loved it! Extremely helpful video for one like myself who tried the Handpresso and sent it back about 10 seconds after producing what was perhaps the most dismal excuse for espresso imaginable; tried it again a half dozen times and roundly concluded it was a well intended device (liked the form factor and pump) but the weak swill that came out the business end should not be allowed to use espresso to describe the disgusting brown liquid it produces. Maybe I'm spoiled by my prosumer Valentina espresso shots every morning for 12 years but a reasonable semblance of that is what I expect after granting generous latitude for the type devices all of these are. Back to the STARESSO - my experience/satisfaction with it wasn't dramatically better although it was adequate enough to rationalize keeping it (I bought it about 3 years ago - early on, I think) and was surprised a couple months later when I received an improved replacement main cylinder. Thank you STARESSO! It didn't make a lot of difference but the fact it was replaced says a lot about the inventor/designer doing the right thing. I didn't know it can use pods and hope mine can because the grind/tamp didn't seem to be much more than a morning hassle when on the road. That said, the instructions made no reference to the 14 gram capacity (which is a machine made double espresso fill) nor exacting details about tamping method and fact it requires/tolerates the same tamp as a machine portafilter. So, thank you very much, Simon (?) for both an informative and enjoyable tutorial. BTW: Nice camp cook set and burner. Compact and durable. What is the reflective foil... insulated pot holder or what? Anyway, I need one smaller than the one I currently have. What brand is it? Any other recommendation?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 5 лет назад
That cook kit was two pots from Alpkit, but I've since bought a new set that was so much cheaper, but it of a better quality. I bought them from AliExpress and they are by a company called TOMSHOO they were so cheap but they are perfect. It takes a little longer to arrive as they ship from China. But the shipping was free and I wasn't it any rush. The foil over the mug is just insulation you get from a DIY store, keeps the drink warmer for longer on colds days. You could buy a double walled mug though that would do away with the need to use the insulation. Glad you like the video, Staresso have released a new version now that looks really cool, I'm thinking of getting it and making a video. Anyways thanks for watching, and have a great day :)

I was one of the eXpresso critics and once I spotted it, couldn't enjoy nor take with any seriousness, the content of your review. But now…now I can watch with excitement and enthusiasm your thoughts. I think it will be a Handpresso Auto for me, though. But I'm in no rush to buy.

Luke Piggott Thanks Luke, The Handresso Auto is an awesome product if you're looking to use it in a car. If you plan on using it indoors, be aware that the 12v to mains power adapter if fairly expensive to buy. I'm in the progress of testing a new portable espresso machine that pumps using a regular USB power source. It doesn't heat the water unfortunately, but it might be worth checking it out. I should have a demo video up in the next week or too.

Thank you for your reviews on these espresso makers! I prefer espresso over coffee and usually use a traditional Moka Pot with Moka grind from Illy or grind my own beans. Illy is expensive but far above the rest. Bustella is a cheap alternative that is not so bad! I have used the Aero Press which is very quick and easy but a step down from the Moka Pot. I do not own a espresso maker. Too many gadgets and they tend to be expensive and bulky but these are small and storable. I'm considering this. Though I know I will not want to do the measuring and weighing every day. That's what happened with the pour over method.- Another type of method I have tried and liked but quickly tired of the timing/weighing. - Too busy and racing to work...……..

Great video to watch while drinking my first coffee from my Staresso for the day. Regarding the use of pods why do you only pierce the top and not top and bottom? I thought the water would need to travel all the way through. Incidentally there are some all aluminium pods which are also easy to pierce without risk to yourself. L'or is one such brand. Thanks for the video.

GadgetViper nice to hear from you. I have the aeropress. it's a great product until it got stolen in the office pantry. I think I will get the staresso. easier to pump I think.
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 7 лет назад
Well, I can highly recommend it, also I believe the Minipresso doesn't build as much pressure, I've heard people say it only reaches around 8 psi. From my research, people tend to favour the Handpresso for the best quality, but I'd argue the Staresso is equally as good if it's prepped correctly. I have both and I use the Staresso.

For me the the Handpresso was a terrible. I got it for Christmas last year and it NEVER gave me real crema. Plus no matter how I managed my grinds, it was always weak for me. I sold it on ebay and took a loss. Hated it. Stresso makes at least two different versions of this press. One like in your video above and another where the glass in molded into the base. I bought the latter first and quickly realized I had bought the wrong one. The issue with the glass version is that is fitted into the base and you either have to drink your espresso from the container or pour it into another glass. But, when you do that it looses a lot of the crema. All that to say, I am in love with the STARESSO Espresso Coffee Maker (above) The crema is real and the taste amazing. I find the Nespresso pods work wonderfully and as I travel photographers who find himself in some of the most crazy places, I can count on one thing - a great cup of coffee every morning! I am making a list of travel tips and will be linking your video. Thanks!
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 7 лет назад
Matt Brandon Thanks Matt, I do like the Handresso, but you're right, the crema isn't as full as with the Staresso (when used correctly) I think its main problem is the loss of pressure during the extraction. I tend to slowly pump it while it's releasing, which isn't ideal. I've also got the new Nanopresso on its way to test out. It looks really promising, and could be perfect for travel.
@MattBrandon

Yes, there is a Nespresso adapter. It's such a new product, think it has just hit the market. The original Minipresso only reaches 8bar, but this one is supposedly capable of reaching 18. Here's a link to the product - www.wacaco.com/pages/nanopresso I'm really excited to try it out.

Not sure if you still have the Staresso. But I have found one day, when I forgot to bring my scoop to work with me, that the metal cap on the handle fits perfectly for a tamper in the cup for ground coffee. I'm not sure if they designed it to do that, it would make sense though, but that really helps to press the coffee down and create a better puck. Now I just carry the top sections and no need to worry about a scoop or anything else. I thought that was amazing, and I haven't seen any info about it online yet.

Great video, Like so many I made the #schoolboyerror of not piercing the cap. Doh. Anyhow, couple of thoughts: 1) Warm the cup when it is in plastic retainer - no need to hold a HOT cup, Then screw section of retainer on and assemble 2) Pumping - this will only clear out the pump. Good idea itself BUT the pressure comes from pumping NEW air through the water in closed environment. So number of pumps imho wont be reduced by "pre-pumping" 3) for backpacking - most utility knifes (eg Swiss Army) have a marlin - sharp spike. Works well if you dont want to dance with the devil (Starbucks) or want to use recyclable pods.

Great review Simon! Tempted by the Staresso but cant decide between it and the Nanopresso. I enjoy camping and hiking like you and want to upgrade from my filter coffee on the trails. I do like the flexibility of using nespresso pods if i want less cleanup and ease but im torn about the weights of using the Staresso without the cup and stand vs Nanopresso with the nespresso pod attachment. Are the grams saved or lost, better or similar coffee?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 5 лет назад
If you're only planning on using it with pods, I'd probably go with the staresso (with foil backed pods) if however, you want to use fresh coffee, I'd go with the Nanopresso with the Barista kit. I dont think there is a portable espresso machine that can come anywhere close to the quality you'll get from a double shot Nanopresso. Also, you might want to consider an Aeropress, it's lighter than both, pretty easy to clean and makes amazing coffee. Have a great day :)

@@GadgetViper Thanks for getting back to me. Im surprised you mentioned the Nanopresso after i just watched your review of the Keith pour over which is insanely light and perfect for ultralight hiking. I try to follow the principles of ultralight hiking BUT i like coffee, so its a challenge, good coffee but weight penalty. Also looking at the numbers of Nanopresso (336g) with double barisa kit (270g), i can say thats heavier than my ultralight overnight backpack that i would be carrying it in! I guess the pods were only if i was super lazy or it was more a day hike where i could afford the weight penalty and also its a single use item. Now im thinking out loud, probably better to get 2 systems, one for regular use, the Nanopresso and for ultralight hiking, the keith equivalent, Tiatrisan titanium pour over (83g) which is considerably cheaper. (www.aliexpress.com/item/4000114324136.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.4b0d3c00zLmVNU&mp=1) Thanks alot Simon and hope you're well caffeinated chilling in the hammock!
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 5 лет назад
@@badboznam the Keith Pour over is very light, but also very expensive. The problem with pour overs is that you really need a controlled way of pouring the water (a gooseneck kettle) it's very difficult to achieve good results with a regular pot. Also the temperature is an issue if it's a cold climate due to the time it takes to drop through. The Nanopresso barista kit doesn't add much weight (it comes with a large water tank that you don't need to use, and other bits) the actual items that add weight is a small ring and the larger basket, probably around 40g. For ultralight good coffee on the trail, you could get a V60 (just the cone) or use an Aeropress, or buy the Keith Pour over if you can afford it :p but I get frustrated trying to do pour overs on the trail. I take the Nanopresso (with the Barista ring) and a Hario slim grinder more often than not and just chalk it up to my 'luxury items'

Hi mate, what’s your thoughts comparing this with the Nanopresso. Strikes me this is a better package bearing in mind you can use capsules, ground, and you get a case. The wacaco unit with all this is double the price. But what about the taste??
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 3 года назад
You can get a good tasting Espresso out of the Staresso, I used it for a long time before I switched over to the Nanopresso. If I only had the single shot Nanopresso, there wouldn't be a huge difference between the two. (I'm not really interested in pods, I prefer grinding my own beans) what makes me always choose the Nanopresso over the Staresso is the double shot basket on the Nano. 16g is my default, I just don't think a single shot espresso does it for me, probably why I don't get along with pods either.

great advice, thanks mate! did you find that with too fine of a grind, the coffee actually lands IN the glass, being pushed through the filter, also making it really hard to pump? i find that going with typical "espresso fine grind" bought in stores , that tends to happen.. I sort of solved it by putting in a thin layer of regular grind in first, and then topping it up with espresso grind, but it's a bit of a hassle.. cheers!

There are two spare O-ring in the box. Try to replace it and make sure the metal filter is in the middle.

Hi, Sorry for the late reply. I'm in the UK and I get my ones from my local supermarket (Tesco) alternatively you can get them on Amazon, which I think is a bit cheaper, I'll add a link in the description.

@@GadgetViper alright thanks :) cause I'm thinking of making an espresso with it and make milk foam with French press for a cup of latte is that good to use nanopresso as an espresso maker especially good crema for latte art (any milk based coffee) and lastly can I ask for the pros and cons of nanopresso Thanks mate :)

@@user-mf7of9qn4p if your planning on making milk based drinks, you'd need the Nanopresso with the Barista Kit, that allows you to pull a double shot, a latte of cappuccino really needs a double shot. There are very few cons regarding the Nanopresso, once you've got used to using it. The Temperature of the espresso is a little low, but fine if you preheat the water tank or use the Nanovessel (did a vid on it) but if your using the shot for a milk based drink, then the temperature shouldn't be an issue. The Staresso says it can froth milk with the piston, but I tried and was very disappointed with the results, your better of either using the French press, or get a little battery operated frother.

2 Questions ! 1 - Can you use the Nespresso Reuseable Stainless Steel pod in this? 2 - My STARESSO after using 7-8 times, with the same coffee grind, is now very hard to pump after the first creme appears. It jams up and slowly releases drop by drop coffee, you can pump again 1-2 times and then jams up again, but the dripping speed remains slow (seems the pressure is lost somewhere, not sure where) Can anyone help?

hmm, is there a chance your over packing the basket? if the exact same grind and the same amount (weight) is going in and it's not pumping as it did before, it sounds like maybe the piston has an issue. Perhaps try putting clean water in a glass and put the piston in it and pump it through, maybe it will flush it out.

I also have the same problem after just using it 4 times... I tried putting olive oil on the top part of the plunger/pump... seems to work a little but then again it still jams from time to time... hoping you could advise me if you've found a good fix for this problem

@@neodrumz the coffee grind was too fine for me, it solved the issue. If you coffee is too fine, do not tamper it.

@@mufihazari Thanks for the tip mate! So no need to tweak or adjust the piston? Coz I have been using the same exact coarse grind coffee since I got the Staresso, same bag... for the first 4 uses it made excellent espresso... but after that it started jamming... seems to me there's a loss in pressure
@mufihazari

@@neodrumz try loosening the grounds after filling the basket. Also check the basket, if the plastic filter deshaped which might effect the flow
