Initially, we bought a Nanopresso as a present for a friend, we will recommend your videos to him. Now I just watched this video again with my wife, because in the meantime we have bought another Nanopress for us. The quality of the espresso with good coffee beans is outstanding. My wife trains baristas, so we know a thing or two about coffee. We have a number of espresso machines and coffee/espresso making contraptions at home. When I want an espresso I use the Nanopresso (and not one of the big espresso machines) because the Nanopresso makes the best espresso shots. We mildly overfill, that gives us best results. Basically, we increased the amount of coffee until we got the perfect espresso shot and the puck was nice and dry. Thanks for making and uploading this pro-quality video.

I was trying to decide between this and the staresso, and I picked the staresso. 15 vs 18 bar is very close, a few low-mid grade espresso machines do only 5ish for many times more money and people seem pretty happy with them. I like the fact you can fit more grounds in the base model without buying add-ons too. Also it was 39.99 after a promo code on Amazon with free shipping too, which is pretty good for what you get.
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
Yes I think the Staresso is really good value for money. It lacks the refinement and build quality of the Nanopresso, but you can make a really good espresso with it, you can also use Nespresso capsules too which is another great feature.

I finally got one! and came back to your video. Yeah it is a great little machine, I've found it has similar issues as the handpresso, as where if you load less than 8 grams in the basket you get a heavily under-extracted shot due to channeling. I generally drink 1:2 ratio, but I found it tasted very weird (bitter) on the nanopresso!. However a 1:3 tasted delicious. Compared to the handpresso, I still get a much better tasting shot out of the handpresso when going to a 1:2 ratio. I also have the option to change the portafilter on the handpresso to the "ristretto" in case I want to go to a lower dose. This is advantageous because some of the single origin high quality beans are too strong and lowering the dose sometimes tames it, making a delicious fruity shot. I think the constant flow and the dropping pressure profile of the handpresso produces a much better shot when prepared correctly. The nanopresso is definitely more user friendly, and I don't want to say the handpresso produces a better shot until I spend enough time playing around with it, I believe the constant pumping technique can change taste drastically. Also, the 18 bar pressure is way too high in my opinion, which is probably what causes the bitterness.
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 5 лет назад
Hi Eda, definitely spend some time dialing in the Nanopresso, I think with all manual portable espresso machines, you need to really find the sweet spot, as you clearly did with the handpresso. For me, the Nanopresso really shines with the Barista Kit and a 16 gram double shot basket. If I were using the 8 gram, if would be a tough call to choose between the Nanopresso and the handpresso, they are both great. :)

I need to try this nanopresso. That shot looks good, easy to achieve, and the design is awesome. Price is unbeatable. It also looks like they nailed the pressure thing. It doesn't seem to be introducing air into the coffee, so the crema looks real!. However, as an engineer, I am not entirely convinced it is possible to achieve the proper pressure with such little effort and small pump, I wish they included an option with a pressure gauge, I would pay for it. With the handpresso, you know for sure you are achieving the right pressure. It also feels like you are, as you have to work for it. However, the dropping pressure profile of the handpresso makes it extremely challenging to achieve a good shot, just like those spring loaded espresso machines. However, you can always re-pump midshot and release again, although this probably hurts the quality of the coffee as you would have it sitting on hot water for too long. It is possible to achieve a superb, professional shot with the handpresso, but it is way too difficult. And when we are considering a portable device, where you just want to enjoy good coffee in the middle of the wilderness, the handpresso becomes too frustrating. I have to try this nanopresso myself. Taste the crema and shot myself and decide if it tastes like real espresso. Your shot looks really good, and worth the try! Great video, and review, as always. Good job!

Best portable espresso machines channel by far! Look at all those views and subscriptions you have now. Nice job! Talking about dialing the grind, fine tuning the extraction, grinding whole beans, using a gram scale. This is how you make real espresso. The 3:1 ratio is a Lungo, and by personal experience when properly pulled a Lungo is generally a smoother drink than espresso and liked by most people.

Great review that inspired me to acquire my own Nanopresso, which I received via mail yesterday. While I'm still learning the intricacies of the device, I've already made several tasty shots with plenty of crema. I suspect that once I dial in the coffee type and roast and grind to my own taste, this Nanopresso will work wonders. Currently I'm a devoted Moka Pot drinker, and I'll continue that -- and my Aeropress -- for those times when I want a slightly larger portion of black coffee. Thanks again for this great series of reviews -- I can see that the Barista Kit is in my future!
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
I'm a huge fan of the Aeropress as well. Until I got the Barista Kit, I was using the Aeropress for all my larger drinks. I haven't used the Aeropress once since I got the double shot adapter, so I'd certainly recommend you treat yourself to one sometime in the future, I couldn't do without mine. Good luck dialling in the Nanopresso :)

It seems like the Barista Kit has become scarce. Everyone is sold out. I'd buy directly from Wacaco, but I'm a bit apprehensive about purchasing from Hong Kong after reading their shipping disclaimers/policies. Either this Kit is really popular, or something else is going on, like they're stopping production or something nefarious like that.
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
Michael Kuehn bear and bear kindly supplied me with the NS adapter, but the Barista Kit I bought directly from Wacaco. I think it took around 10 days to arrive in the UK and I had to pay a small fee for the import duty. The delivery was free though and it was cheaper to buy from them directly. I wouldn't worry about ordering from them if you can wait a week or two for the delivery. Alternatively, you could email them and ask when they are restocking the Amazon store. The Barista Kit is awesome, I couldn't do without it.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, RU-vid doesn't seem to be notifying me of comments on older videos for some reason, If you want to lose all the bubbles, you can take the rubber plug thingy out of the portafilter to convert it to the non-pressurised mode. Fantastic review. Very helpful. You are are really upping your review quality ;-). A couple of things: it didn't look hard to pump. Any comments on the ease of pumping? One of the reasons I like the Staresso is that it contains the glass and thus no chance of stilling while pumping. The other thought is; I have a friend who runs a coffee business in Laos and he is always telling me not to over extract my espresso. So if you want a taller cup, don't pump more water through it that will just give you a more bitter coffee. Better to extract into a given amount of hot water. If it's too diluted then pump another extraction into it. Just a thought. Any way. I am frustrated as I am putting my final touches on my travel ebook where I link your video to the staresso. ;-)
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 7 лет назад
Hi Matt, Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I know what you mean about the Staresso having a downward pump and the contained glass, I was a little concerned that the Nanopresso might be a little awkward having to hover over a vessel. I haven't found it to be the case though and as for the ease of pumping, it's actually really good and very quiet. If the tamp is hard and the grind on the fine side, it does require a little force, but with good preparation of the basket, I could probably pump with a few fingers. I do still really like the Staresso, it does hold 4 or 5 more grams in its basket and the Nespresso pod drops right in, but there is no doubt the Nanopresso is a superior product in terms of design. I think the Barista Kit (which allows for a double shot) will be the cherry on the cake for me. Also, thanks for the pro tip on making a taller cup, I will definitely take your advice.

@michaeldemarillac9992

I had the same problem, turns out the spring was in wrong overpressuring and making it hard to press, 120 pumps later the reseviour emptied out. All the orange seals dropped off when I opened it up in the upper coffee end of the chamber. The grinds accumulated under the orange seal and bulged it out until it was distorted, the one around the recess on the side of the metal filter plate and what did not accumulate in the device ended up in the coffee and there was so much pressure building up in the system with subsequent tries that eventually I had to leave it on the bench for an hour before the pressure reduced enough so I could open the end up and dump the contents. It simply stopped working and required superhuman strength to press the plunger. I was about to send it back but tried one last time, pulled it apart (using an Allen Key for the metal filter as well) it its entirity, cleaned then dried it and reset the spring and it has been working like a charm. The other thing that is bad is tamping the coffee too tight. Another complaint is that the orange circular centre rubber that the refil pod sits on pops out when I rinse it under the tap. So I have to keep an eye on it or lose it. There are no spare parts as far as i can see for this tiny rubber piece.

Great reviews! I have been watching your videos the past few days trying to decide on a machine to have at the office and have narrowed it down to the Wacaco (nano or mini) products and the Staresso. Which one do you find is easier to clean? Any concerns about water not drying out in eirher chamber and growing mold?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
I think I use the Nanopresso too much for there to be any chance of mold developing. I think the Nanopresso is superior to the previous version (the mini) with double the PSI. If you were concerned about having full access for cleaning purposes, then the Staresso would certainly be worth considering. The only part on the Staresso that you can't clean is the stainless steel piston, but you could plunge that directly into boiling water and pump it through. I have the Nanopresso Barista kit on its way, (double shots) I have a feeling that will raise the Nanopresso to the next level. Thanks for watching :)

Hi Gadget Viper, after watching your review on the nanopresso, i bought one and having been using it for about 3 months. I was comparing its expresso extraction with staresso, under the same grind fineness and water temperature and pump speed, the expresso coming out from nanopresso has a good crema, but the mouth feel is relatively watery compared to staresso, which is a lot thicker and creamy. I have tried it with less water and varying the coffee grind. I pretty sure the pressure was building up fine, but the extraction is still disappointing. Just wondering if that is normal or i have too much of an expectation with Nanopresso. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks a lot.

Great video! semi-relevant questions because I see you use the Hario grinder, after disassembling it for cleaning, how do you restore the grinder to the same configuration as before without trial and error?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
Hi Ron, I'm always tweaking the adjustment on it depending on the coffee beans I'm using, but as a general rule I think I'm usually 4-5 clicks from fully tight, so if I remove the adjustment screw to clean it, I'll just screw it on until it locks and then bring it back 5 clicks. I'll be honest though, I hardly ever give it a really thorough clean. I think it might be well overdue!

@GadgetViper

Kyle Furness Kyle Furness definitely the Nanopresso, it's the smallest and the lightest if all the espresso machines I've tested. If you don't mind not having a Crema and want an even lighter option, take a look at the Aeropress. It's not an espresso machine, bit it does make insanely good coffee. If I'm doing a big hike and want minimum weight, I'll take the Aeropress.

Which one do you prefer between the nanopresso and the handpresso? I am struggling to decide between the two! Awesome channel by the way and great review. I like the fact that the handpresso stores the pressure so to speak. Is the quality of the coffee produced from one superior to the other. Cheers and keep up the awesome work!
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 7 лет назад
Road and Sky Thanks, I personally prefer the Nanopresso. The Handresso is a great device, but it does continuously drop pressure during the extraction so the last 3rd is a little under. I slow pump during the extraction to help maintain a better pressure throughout. The Nanopresso is cheaper, far lighter, comes with a carry case and cup. Since I've had the Nanopresso, I haven't used my Handresso once. If I had to choose between the two, I'd definitely favour the Nanopresso

Great video, I have one and love it as well! Only thing is I'm having an issue removing the filter end after use. No signs of overpressure during extraction/ any other negative signs. I don't over torque it during fitting either. So I was wondering if you had experienced similar? And could help at all?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
Ashley de Lotz Thanks, first I'd make sure that there are no coffee grinds on the underside of the basket where it nests over the body, also make sure it's clean on the top surface. If it's still tight to remove, try addung slightly less grinds to the basket. It may be that when you screw the portafilter down, it's bottoming out a little to much with the tampered grinds. You'd know for sure if you purposely underfilled the basket . Hope you find the solution :)

Thank you very much for the detailed response. I have tried under filling it significantly and ensuring the rim is of the basket is Uber clean. This has helped a bit, but it is still quite tight. Maybe I just need to hit the gym! Thanks again for your help and the videos :)

@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 4 года назад
Try running it under a tap and pumping fresh water though it for a while, it's what I do each time I use it, seems to keep it working well. Regarding the clicks, I think it varies from grinder to grinder. Start a little on the coarse side, extract the coffee, if the stream comes out thick and continous, click it a little finer for the next one, and repeat until the flow is thin like a match stick, but not drippy, that's when it's at its best.

At around 9:30 you spoke about the grind affecting the bitterness, or smoothness, depending on the grind. Which is which?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 5 лет назад
Typically a sweeter flavour can be achieved with a finer grind and a slightly smaller dose. That said, this really only applies to a medium roast, if you're using a dark roast, a finer grind could increase the bitterness. If you're looking for a sweeter flavour, I'd recommend achieving it by switching to a different bean. If you get a medium/light roasted bean that's been grown at altitude and has been naturally dried, it's going to offer much sweeter flavours. If you're looking for a bitter taste, most dark roasts will give you that. With the Nanopresso, find the best grind for the correct extraction, (don't let it become too drippy, a thin constant flow is the perfect) then, if the flavour notes are not to your liking, I'd select a different bean. One other thing, make sure you preheat it well, a good temperature will help too. Have a great day

@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
That's strange, I definitely haven't had that problem. Try making sure the top of the basket and the underside is clean, if there are any grinds on it, it may affect the seal between the portafilter and the basket. If it's clean and still passing grinds through, maybe the basket has an uneven top surface, you could try rubbing it against a surface and look at the scuff marks to see if it has a high spot? Good Luck :)

mine will be arriving today. i have a hario mini mill. what number of clicks do you recommend getting started on with with the pressurized (rubber in) set up? non-pressurized (rubber out)?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 5 лет назад
Definitely start with the rubber in, if you do decide to take it out, just pump fast for the first 9ish pumps otherwise the first part of the extraction will be low on pressure. I'm not sure how many clicks, maybe 5, but just try and get the flow to be a thin steady stream. If it extracts quickly, just click it clockwise and see if it slows on the next one. When it's too fine, it will start dripping and requiring more force to pump, then you can either go back a click or try reducing the weight by 0.5g if you've got a decimal place on your scales. It takes a little while to get to the sweet spot, but once you're there you'll be happy with the results :)

hi hi !! wow! you are fast in getting the product in. You made the right choice buying the nanopresso. i borrowed a minipresso GR. and it is awesome! It has this problem of strayed used grounds getting stuck inside the portafilter side. Not easy to clean. Design issue i guess which they mentioned they have all ironed out, thus the new model - the nanopresso model. I seen you get a very nice dry puck at the end of the extraction. I can't get it from the minipresso GR model. I got a very soaking wet puck unfortunately. Been playing with the ground size. Can you show me how fine the grinds you are using? The taste is awesome like what you say in yr video. I usually do 1 espresso a day but with this product oh my!! so many a day till I cannot sleep at night. It makes addictive and very intense espresso. I am going to order the nanopresso model soon after the accessories are out. thanks for taking the lead.

Carrot Cake Thanks for watching :) that puck sat in the basket a little while longer than usual as I was delayed mucking around with the camera. They are usually a little wetter than that one. The portafilter is super easy to clean, you can pop the nozzle out if you need to. My grind is slightly finer than most pre-ground coffee. I adjusted the mill until the extraction rate started to slow to a point just before it became more of a drip than a flow. I'm still toying with it, but I think I'm close :)

The company say that the Nanopresso is actually 15% easier to pump than the Minipresso even though it's twice as powerful. I know what you mean though. I purposely over tamped with a really fine grind (footage at 8:23) and the force required to pump was considerably more. I think the Nanopresso will also need a screwdriver too on a deep clean (every 6 months) so that's something I might mention on a follow-up video if I get to demo the Barista Kit and NS adapter.

Do you know what the difference is between the pressurised and non pressurised mode and which one you should use? The manual says that for best results run in non pressurised but doesn't fails to mention any reasoning behind it.
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
Heymega Yes, the non pressurised mode is considered more authentic with espresso machine purists. A pressurised head tends to make a bigger crema due to it being more bubbly which is considered cheating I guess. As for the taste, I really think there is no difference between them in all honesty. Waccaco say you can get your grind a little finer in the non pressurised mode, but from experience, its only a tiny bit. If you're happy with the results with the spring in, I'd keep it that way. Hope that helps.

Thanks for an amazing video. I have a question regarding the grinding size. I’m currently using Hario mill mini (which is same as yours) and i’m having a hard time finding the correct grind size. 4-5 clicks from the tightest won’t work and no flow is coming out even with very light tamped. I have to go up to minimum of 8-10 clicks for a constant flow which i think is not normal because the grinds are very coarse and somehow inconsistent for an espresso. You have any comment?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 4 года назад
You could using slightly less grinds in the basket and tamp a little lighter, that could help, also if you remove the silicon nub and switch it to a non-pressurized portafilter that should also improve things. I think I show how to do it at the start of the Nanopresso NS Adapter video. One other thing, the Hario Slim is an ok grinder, but its not as consistent when it comes an even grind, I'm using the crushgrind these days, they are about the same price, I defined get better results using it. I made a video about the grinder and compared it to the Hario, have a watch if you get a chance. As an experiment, you could buy some pre-ground coffee, like the Lavazza Espresso and try that, it will be a fairly fine but very consistent grind, if you can extract that, then it would definitely point towards the grind quality rather than the Nanopresso. Hope that helps. Have a great day and keep safe.
@limsachak8479
@limsachak8479 4 года назад
GadgetViper Thanks for your comment. I just find it weird because normally i buy the coffee beans and get it pre-ground to number 4-5 and it keeps up well with my nanopresso in terms of extraction and taste. Just lately, I decided to get a manual grinder to grind the beans fresh so the coffee may taste better. But the problem happened like i mentioned. I tried comparing the freshly grind coffee to my pre-ground one and it is already way coarser, but still i’m having a hard time getting the smooth extraction regardless of pressurized or non-pressurized mode (I did try the non-pressurized mode already).i also tried reducing the amount of coffee to 7g, but there wasn’t much improvement. It won’t be a problem if i keep doing with pre-ground bean (i can go as fine as 03). I just want to dig more into espresso by trying with manual grind, but i think i failed. And i am thinking, is it the grinder? The beans? Or is it me doing it incorrectly
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 4 года назад
@@limsachak8479 I think if the pre-ground (from the cafe) works and the Hario Slim doesn't, then it's definitely down to the inconsistency in the grind from the hario slim. The grind quality makes a huge difference, if you can afford to get a better grinder, it would certainly improve things. I use a Baratza grinder at home and the Crushgrind when I'm outdoors. Take a look at the crushgrind review I did and look at the close up comparison between the Hario and crushgrind grinds, there is a huge difference.

@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 7 лет назад
Uzair Hanif The design of the Nanopresso is definitely more thought out, the rubber O-ring inside the basket on the Staresso is not ideal. You can't really tap a puck out with the Staresso, instead I place a finger over the basket and run it under the tap to flush out the grinds. With regards to the taste, I've had the Staresso for almost a year and I've dialled it in to make a really really good coffee. The Nanopresso makes a wicked coffee too, but you can't get anymore than 8g in the basket, the Staresso fits 13/14g so you can get a double shot with one. With the Barista Kit for the Nanopresso it will most completely replace the Staresso, but at the moment I still use the Staresso for Americano and cappacinos. Hope that helps

@GadgetViper

Hi William, I really haven't experienced that with my unit. I wonder if maybe there's a little too much grinds in the basket, and it's creating additional tension. Try and prepare the basket with a little less grind, so that after you tamp it, there is around 3 or 4mm of basket above the level of the coffee. For the last month of so, I've been using the Nanopresso with the Barista kit double shot adapter fitted, this provides 2 points for loosening the portafilter. Perhaps if your unit has some issue regarding the tightness between the threads, having the Barista ring on it, might solve the problem for you. Hope that helps.

Hi Seah, you could try holding off for a few minutes before tapping the puck out, usually, if you remove the portafilter straight after the extraction it sometimes blows the puck. I'm normally not in too much of a hurry to clean out the basket, so by the time I do, the puck is dry and hard. If you really dial the grind in get the weight and tamp just right, the puck will tap out straight away without falling to pieces. Good luck :)

@@GadgetViper Hi, would like to ask on the hario ceramic grinder, how many clicks away from the extreme clockwise you have set for grinding your beans? The reason is i have set it 3 to 4 clicks which maybe too fine for nanapresso.

@@seahfrancis5156 I not 100% sure they are all the same, but I think my one is around 5 clicks. The Nanopresso works best with a slightly coarser grind than a typical espresso grind you'd get in a coffee shop. The quality of the grinder plays an important part too. I can go slightly finer with my Baratza Virtuosa. If you grab a bag of Lavazza Espresso pre-ground, that is pretty damn close to the grind if memory serves me correctly.

anyone know how to get a replacement pressure plug for the portafilter? I took mine off, then a family member tossed it.

Hmm, you could treat yourself to the NS adapter and use the pressure plug off of that, alternatively you could try asking Wacaco directly if a replacement is available.
