@@delindsay Since day 1 everyone: We need placable doors and stairways for the ships! Bethy, almost 1 year later: Creations Club is open! You can buy ingame plushies for real money now!
@@delindsaybet they did but.. they do like to let their mod community do things. There are a lot of things they never really did that seemed.. obvious that should have been done. I can’t imagine they just didn’t see the issues. I have to believe they expected the mod community to pick of the slack and make the game complete for us and then allow them to focus on the DLCs they’re making for the game.
One of things I like to do with this mod is put one of those big round windows on the end of a hab, then place a "shutter" door right behind it. In game the door will act like high tech window blinds. You can activate it to open the shutter up revealing the window looking out into the world or space. Goes great with the "Cleaner Porthole Glass" mod which is only on Nexus as far as I know.
I used this mod for a long time, sadly before the arrival of Creators, and was giving some problems. Glad to see now is working perfectly ! And kudos to the author, alongside with our thanks to help improving this great game ! The ship building is one of the most attractive, funny and interesting part of the game, something unique. So, peoples like this mod author, deserve all our thanks !
See, this is the kinda thing I wanna see when I'm looking for Starfield videos. Not necessarily specifically mod videos, but videos that actually go into detail, the person talking is clear and understandable and obviously interested in what he's talking about, comparisons and things.
The easiest way to start learning to work with this mod, is to make a simple test ship at your outpost, with only a few habs and two or three levels and just try out all the possibilities this mod brings to you. That's the way I did it, and it really is a small learning curve. I'm using this mod for months, and it''s a no brainer.
That's the plan. I won't be touching my already created Ships until I've got it down. And I picked up enough for this video quickly... that is after someone in the comments from my community post told me how I was doing it wrong to begin with lol.
Yes! I have had this since it was created and it is the best ship mod out there!!! I can do a complete loop in my ship and with Matilijas ship stairs I can build 4 or 5 decks high with no ladders.
Awesome walkthrough (pun intended)! I think all we need now is "auto doors" which close at least the upwards sliding doors the doors after a certain time. Imagine ship combat in space with all doors widely open and taking damage irl... I don't think that would end up in any good way ;) Maybe it would also be possible to create some emergency shut mechanism for doors whenever the hull takes damage which immediately closes all doors - that would be pretty immersive too.
I've been using this since it first came out on Nexus and I wouldn't want to play without it! Port/Starboard and Fore/Aft does change which side of the opening the door swings into. Sometimes it matters if the door clips into a chair or something. For portholes you can just use the shutter or passage and then the porthole over that. I've never found a good reason to have a hole in the floor and not a ladder :)
Awesome mod still gotta get to building a ship in my current playthrough to use this mod. Also cool shop you built I may built it or something very similar.
It was sorely needed for Ship builders. As for the demonstration Ship, I just tossed it together for this Showcase, specifically with hard to navigate Hab layouts to confuse the vanilla game so it'd better show how good this Mod really is.
@@ghstbstr Well thanks. I suggest you look at some of the Themed Ships I built like the Kepler R(evisited) "Space Buick" or the Deimos Heavy Fighter "Judgement". My coolest build is the Hopetech "Spacetruk IV". And my favorite which is still my daily driver, the all Class-A "Star Eagle re-imagined."
You said it doesn't matter if you use port/starboard, or fore/aft. I haven't used the mod, but my guess would be, that is the direction in which the door opens. So for a bedroom, you would want the door to open outward, so for example a chair near the door would not clip with it (though, traditionally, in homes, bedroom doors do open in, not out). So it would be a matter of preference. For Starfield's round doors, I would imagine there is a setting to determine if it opens to the left or to the right. For example there is a Captains Quarters (I forget which one) that if you attach it to the top of that Cabot bridge, the door opens in and clips through a chair. Maybe if Bethesda played their own games, they would have seen that, and flipped the door, but we know they don't really care about such details.
Along with the rest of the game, Bugthesda programmers put only the barest amount of thought into actual mechanics. Even with the faulty door placement, shipbuilding is still more exciting than the main quest. When i want to move to NG+ got a mod to skip the torture session. This mod looks like it will fix much of the frustration I felt from ship building. Thank you.
And that's exactly why I'm done giving a pass to Billion $ Corporations when they release buggy unfinished games. They have the means to do better, we as Players deserve better.
I've just installed this yesterday and can confirm that it works exactly as it says on the tin. It DOES make the ship building a bit more complex complex because you have to plan and know where you want your doors, and that's probably the reason why something like this isn't in vanilla.
Can you explain a bit in detail? Are you saying that the door hole can be a window instead? I haven't gone into detail with this Mod yet so still learning.
@@delindsay before you place windows, you need a door placement. A passageway, will give you the vanilla look. The other ones, you actually have a door to open to see outside. So like a curtain. There is one door that uses the bathroom shutters, I use that for my windows.

Heh, thanks. I just tossed it together in like 5 min solely to test this Mod. The idea was to make the HAb setup so difficult for the vanilla game to understand that it'd do all the odd things with Doors/Ladders you see in the video. Then in comes the Mod to the rescue. However, I really DO like the idea of separate Cabins for the Crew in 1x1's.
Unfortunately it seems the 2 Mods aren't fully cooperating with each other at this time. Here's hoping Jimsoon gets it all figured out so Place Doors Yourself works with custom Hab Mods easier.
Installed it the minute I saw it on CK, it's a blast! The only problem I have is that it have some problems with the Ancient Mariner habs, especially the empty one (haven't try it with any other empty hab), where the door will open on a glitchy inside wall; can "glitch" myself through it by juming, but the other side appears as just a wall (and I'm stuck inside until I decide to teleport outside the ship); ladders seem to work, though
My guess is (based off owning all Elder scrolls and Fallout games) when Shattered Space comes out there will likely be a big sale, combo even, to get the numbers up again.
I've gotten really good at creating ships with doors and ladders where I want them. But, a mod like this will be good to have in my back pocket. Also, there is a mod called Matilija's Aerospace that has stairs.
There's an issue with the ancient mariner hab. Any attached 1X1 will cause any attempted doors to the hab to glitch. (actually I have no idea what's causing it. F me.)
The Mod Author states as much in the description of the Mod. Unfortunately he doesn't have access to the back end of a BGS Mod so there's little he can do about it.
If I had to guess the 4 directions of the doors change which side the door closes/open on. In vanilla it seems like alot of doors tend to randomly be located closer to one side. The door design might depend on the manufacturer but I haven't used all the manufacturer habs so I don't know.
Been using this mod since it came out in November on PC. This mod is one of only a handful 'must have' that has kept me playing this game - since shipbuilding is what hooked me in but the crazy path finding algorithm used for assigning doors and ladders made me want to uninstall in rage. This video brings back many unpleasant memories I would like to have forgotten... 🤣 Would be good if you were able to showcase to your viewers the four linked mods just released by Korodic on Creations which makes brigs usable via non-lethal means, I have been using them since January.
@@delindsay Ideally you need all four... Non Lethal Framework and Useful Brigs are the main two mods, but then the NLF/UB patch so that NLF can use the brigs and finally the optional UB send to brig - just so you can send prisoners to brig whilst still in combat instead of when combat ends.
Play Stores is a really awesome mod and does fix this game quite a bit. There are ways of actually doors for yourself without using it. Each have has a predefined door location the defaults too. The problem is is that it's not easy to figure out which one is which. Bethesda did not Mark anything but you can somewhat figure it out based on the location when you actually initially place the app. That means that it's great that we have this and Bethesda is done far worse as far as the rest of the game goes
We're all well aware of how to "trick" the Ship builder into placing Doors and Ladders "relatively" where we want them and NOBODY wants that. EVERYBODY wants to be able to place Doors and Ladders where we choose, and this Mod gives us that choice.
The problem with this mod is that u can't put a door on the back of HopeTech Overseer 400 Bridge even if u download the mod better snap parts you just can't do it I would have loved to walk from my crimson Captain quarters straight in to the cockpit whatever it still has its uses
Just a quick question. Does installing this mod reset the windows and doors of all the ships you have already built if you go in to change one thing, or does it only function on new builds? Even though there are some ships I have built that would really benefit from a rebuild I don’t fancy rebuilding 28 plus ships! Thanks. I’m fairly sure it won’t affect any already built, but just want to make sure. Being on Xbox, modding is very new to me so pardon my ignorance
Yes and no. I found that SOME of my already built Ships no longer have Doors where they should be but others do. From what I understand it's ONLY supposed to effect Ships that us Players have changed in the Ship builder, so no NPC, bought or stolen ships kind of thing. That said, I feel you on not wanting to redo them all but honestly the more I play with it, it'd be max a 1-5 minute fix per Ship.
Yes, until they get some kind of mechanic where YOUR ship gets boarded, doors just end up being more of a roleplay thing. Once boarding becomes a possibility then sectioning off areas makes more sense.
It's a known issue that Bethesda has yet to address. My understanding is uncheck them all in the load order, log out, log in, recheck them all and it fixes it.
The vast majority of Mods on Creations at this time are free. In order to be capable of selling Mods, the author must be verified by Bethesda. I guess that process is picky so there aren't actually that many verified Creators. Right now, almost half the paid Mods are from Bethesda themselves. You have access to Creations completely free otherwise.
@@delindsay Ok, thanks for the info, so this is like the official mod support everybody was waiting for, just not via Steam workshop but in-game access, I hope it stays on this contained level with the commerce.
I tried it out on pc...works great, only drawback i saw is it seems to conflict with the ship colorizer creation, would not allow me to colorize my weapons and equipment anymore and reverted them all back to default colors
All of it's digital imagination. We aren't really saving the World from the big bad aliens in Halo, or Gears of War, etc, but we still play them. No different from playing with Digital Lego to build an imaginary Space Ship... that we don't fly.
Not at this time no. BGS didn't make that set when they brought out the Empty Habs, though, you can sort of make them empty by adding doors/windows to all 4 sides. I did a video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-giArWEri7bY.html
No ladders, dismantle the cockpit and upper level from the ship, attach cockpit, then as a block, apply the whole second level to the ship. A route from cockpit to landing bay must exist. Applying the second level uses the cockpit as access to landing bay. I will provide a walkthrough on my 40m x 40m ship two levels no ladders just the Cockpit with the stairs on the main xbox clubs
I absolutely love this mods ability to give us control over how doors are placed in our ships. However, (and i hate to be the guy to talk bad about it) after downloading it from creations onto my PC (Steam) version of the game i did run into a major problem. Every time I tried to board a ship regardless if it was a hostile I was trying to steal (both in space or on the ground) or a ship required for a quest, this mod effects ALL ships in game. And because the game generated ships are reliant on the games door protocol, they all spawn without any passages between Habs other than the landing bays, or dockers. I was never able to get any further than the first Hab I walked into so I don't know if the cockpits doors still spawn or not. As great as this mod is in it's current state this kinda breaks the "space pirate" aspect of the game for me, so until that can be fixed I have removed this mod from my game.
Are you 100% positive of this? I saw a response from the Mod author as recent as yesterday I believe stating that it doesn't in any way effect NPC Ships, Mission reward Ships (until we modify them), Stolen Ships (again, until we modify them), etc.
I just tried using this mod just now and um…yeah I’m too stupid to make the doors work properly. I placed the new doors and there was now either 2 doors on 1 doorway, or a clear doorway but the hab wall was still there in the doorway 😐 Also all my windows were gone for some reason so I just gave up at that point. Not saying the mod is bad, it’s just that I’m too stupid to use the mod to begin with 😑
I too was too stupid at first. So much so I crashed the game repeatedly and had to ask for help. Make certain you only use ONE Door for each opening (not one on each Hab for said opening) and for the Windows, you need to add either a Door or Passway as well.
@@tomalong99 oh I’ve already deleted the mod. My ship is already somewhat decorated and it takes a minute to get access to my habs in the ship builder because of how god awful I’ve built my ship. I would’ve liked to have doorless hallways for most of my ship but If I have to replace my habs and have to keep double checking if the doors worked I probably would’ve just deleted the game since I’m just lazy
As far as I understand it, if the Mod doesn't specifically state it's achievement friendly, which BGS had to approve during their checks, then it will disable them, which is dumb in my honest opinion.
Finally. Half rhetorical half actual question but, why couldn't Bethesda do this from the start seeing how most if not, everyone wants? ps. nice explanation vid.
100% actual question that it'd be great to put Todd in the hot seat until he answers. It's such a basic QoL addition that I can't fathom how so many people at BGS looked at the Ship builder (without this option) and said "this is fine."
I think its actually pretty simple and makes kinda sense (from perspective of profit driven corporation): Fallout 4 was actually criticized for its focus on crafting and settlement building. Both by hardline RPG players that felt it diluted the story, and by casual gamers who felt it hinders accessibility. And the later group is the one Bethesda tries to cater to. Reflecting these F4 criticisms, settlements were made so optional they are pretty much useless. Ship is however key gameplay element you cant ignore that easily (yes, you can technically play whole game with Frontier, but eventually its gonna hinder you). So, they decied to make things simple, to make pre-decorated modules. People liked pre-build homes in Skyrim, and they hired Elionora to "clutter" them and make them realistic and nice to look at. But here is a problem: putting doors to particular places hinders modules function. Cant have beds where there is a door. They could adressed it in many ways, but all of them would add complexity to the shipbuilder. They opted for "preference" model we have in vanilla Starfield. All modules have assigned values to their sides, which say if doors there are good or bad (ie if they replace coffee maker or crafting station). In theory, this results in ships that makes best value of their habs, and in smaller ships, its layout is usually also somewhat decent. They could have made two versions of ship builder but they decided not to bother because of few nerds that like to build big and elaborate ships, because modders will do it for them anyway.
I recently tried to capture a ship (is a class C ship so I couldn't 🥲), that looks much like yours, but with a maze of ladders and doors everywhere. Yours look awesome.
Yay! Now main thing I need, maybe not moddable- then Bethesda need to fix it. .. something that allows me to uninstall latest mod which gets stuck in reloading. So I do not need yo uninstall all mods (to be able to play).
Hey is it any other mod that gives the 2x1 frontier nova hab? Idk why but that mod of the doors keeps glitching my game, but the only reason I want it is cause that 2x1 hab haha
There's one and at this moment I can't remember which it is. I'm having this issue with the Shutter (Fore and Aft) on Nova 3x1 Eng and Nova 2x1 Armory (Nova is what the Frontier Habs I believe).
This was the thing I hated about Starfield. Liked mostly everything else. But this door an ladder issue was soooo frustrating. Tried so many ways to disable that rando ladder/door shit.
Great question, we ALL have the exact same question, curious how 800+ people working on Starfield for over 5 years DIDN'T think of it, but one dude figured it out in his spare time.
Considering some of the hoops I have had to jump through to get ladders & doors to place where I want them/in a manner that makes sense with my vanilla builds, this is definitely a mod that is going in my load order once I start a modded NG+ playthrough. Why something like this wasn't in the vanilla game is beyond me, and the way the game chooses to place ladders & doors makes the naval architect in me get a twitchy eye: I'm not an actual naval architect, but I have served on enough ships & done 3 dry-dock overhauls when I was in the Navy to have a good grasp on how & why certain things are done on ships. Like the default placement of doors and ladders not only makes traversing many of the vanilla ships in Starfield annoying as hell, but they are also an absolute nightmare from a damage control perspective, too.
No, the Ship in this video was built in ~10 min specifically to demonstrate how BAD the vanilla game is at placing Doors/Ladders and how GOOD it makes this free Mod.
@@theflyingrub8078 He did? I haven't deleted and re-downloaded it since before this video as it all works perfectly for me. What changed? I ask because I've been hit with the bug that I can no longer enter the Creations tab without freezing or crashing Starfield, fun times.
I must have misunderstood the description of this mod. I was under the impression that doors were added through the interior decorations. Is that maybe a second option? That would mean that even if you had a ship that it removed doors from, you could choose the cockpit option when boarding, activate build menu, and place doors and ladders outward from the cockpit as needed.
I was sure hoping for a mod like this. I saw it on XB Creations but was hesitant to try unless I came here to see a tutorial! You answered all questions even in this simple video!! Keep up the great tutorial vids!!!
@@SirRobertTheGreen However you go into your Ship Builder, then Add an item, move over to the Hab section and it's near the top (they're missing icons).
Thank you for the tour man, this is a must for ship building. I'm waiting for Shattered Space to come back to the game and I'll definitely download this beforehand.
Port and Starboard is meant to indicate which direction the door opening is facing. If you choose the wrong one, sometimes the entire section of the hab it's connected to won't spawn. Shutter is a rolling metal shutter top down.
