Madhouse be like, "we will spend infinite money to make Fern look like the coolest anime character in the history of ever." I've rewatched that battle SO MANY TIMES

Bro that little elegant side step she did. I see that in my dreams. Also, the lighting strike is seared into my retinas.

Apperently the people behind the fight scenes in Frieren also did fight scenes for Chainsaw Man.

One of the things I love about this show is that... well, with most shows, when you go back over the events, you often have moments of "that was cool but now that I think about it, it doesn't make sense". But with Frieren, every time you go back and think about things, they make EVEN MORE sense. Even within this crazy fight scene, there's some subtle character interactions going on that give us more insight into demon nature. When Lugner is pinned down and he yells at Linnie to finish off Stark, it seems at first like he's saying "finish him off and then come and help me with Fern." But that's a human interpretation. It doesn't seem very demonic to ask for help, or to offer it, does it? What IS demonic is using words to deceive humans. Lugner wasn't calling for help, he was trying to "create an opening" for him to attack Fern, by distracting her with Stark's impending death. Fortunately, Fern didn't fall for it, presumably because she had faith in Stark's resolve (remember their earlier conversation about turning and fighting when cornered). Then, ironically, when Stark bisected Linnie, that distracted Lugner enough for Fern to finish him off. Another interesting parallel: Just as Lugner was certain that he was a superior mage to Fern, Lugner and Linnie (and Stark, until the end!) were certain that Linnie with Eisen's techniques was superior to Stark. Fern telling Lugner that Stark was Eisen's student only further confirmed this for the demon. But what only we and Frieren know is that Stark is actually stronger than Eisen, which was what precipitated the unfortunate end to Stark's training. Stark said that Linnie's attacks were mere imitations, not nearly as strong as Eisen's. But then, Stark also said that Jumbo Berry Special was bigger in his memory. Linnie's attacks are not weak; she is repeatedly shown landing earth-shattering blows. It's entirely possible that Linnie's imitation is perfect, and it's actually Stark's memory of Eisen's strength that's inaccurate. Linnie's imitation was too weak, not because it was imperfect, but because as an imitation, it could never surpass the original and grow stronger, unlike Stark, who continued training until he could cleave mountains (and demons) in twain. The passage of time is cruel indeed, but this time the victim isn't the Jumbo Berry Special, it's Linnie. It all goes to show, this fight isn't just awesome because of the cool choreography, the flashy animation, and so on. This fight is every bit part of the same story and character development as all the calm and cozy slice of life stuff we've seen before. It all connects, and the more you think about how, the cooler it all becomes in retrospect.

When Frieren makes the distinction about human magic vs demon magic. She is including elves. It happens a lot in anime that deals with fantasy races, but usually "humanity" includes almost all of the races on the planet. In this case, demons are excluded because they are essentially evolved beasts.

It's the classic DnD "Humanoid" thing, where when we would use "human" in modern day, "humanoid" is more applicable in a DnD world.

Here's the thing about the demons calling Freiren a genius.... she's got TALENT... but she's been working on magic for over a THOUSAND YEARS. It's not just talent at that point, it's an obsession. Why does she collect small, strange magics? Because she's obsessed with magic, she loves it so much she can't tell that she's obsessed. It's played off as an adorkable quirk, but it's something she's willing to derail other goals for. This plays into the whole trope about geniuses (talent) and hard work (discipline) - raw talent may help reduce start-up time because one might understand difficult principals or bring novel approaches to problems... but it's pure hard work and dedication that gets you over the finish-line. The demon calls Freiren a genius as an excuse for their inability to keep up with their magic research, allowing them to denigrate and ignore all the hard work she's put in, and to make themselves feel better for their deficiencies.

I love the manga and was honestly a bit worried about the anime adaptation, as past examples have often been rather disappointing. But with the anime adaptation of Frieren, they've just nailed it - the mood, the characters, the music, the key story elements - it's definitely a masterpiece in every aspect. Although I already know the story, I look forward to every episode!😍
