sushpants it is really good. Toyota didn't advertise them very well so they didn't sell many of them with that option. Mine has 217k miles but still drives like it's new and doesn't use any oil at all.
the 2ZZ is the perfect successor to the 16v 4A-GE. T-VIS-to VVTL-i. blacktop ITB treatment on the 2ZZ would be perfect. that's the ultimate goal for my 2ZZ AW11.
I daily drove an AE82 twin cam for 7 years, and now daily a ZZE123 Corolla Sportivo, and I honestly can't think of anything beyond perhaps reliability that the 4AGE had over the 2ZZGE. The ZZE123 is at least twice as quick, despite weighing 300 odd kgs more than the AE82, the 2ZZ pumps out a lot more power, while using the same amount of fuel, if not less, than the 4AGE, the 2ZZ sounds a lot better stock for stock, but only at 6200rpm and over, below that the 4A sounds slightly better. The only downside I can see to the 2ZZ is it could prove less reliable because of the MMC cylinder liners and all alloy construction. The 4AGE I ran for 7 years had half a million kms on it when I got rid of it, and it still ran pretty well, despite me thrashing the shit out of it for years essentially not caring if I killed it. Pushed it so hard on my last proper mountain road drive in that car that the front brakes caught fire lol. I can't see the ZZE123 I daily atm coming anything close to putting up with that kind of abuse.
How 2ZZ-GE was born 4A-GE Blacktop: I will give him my high revs, VVT system, high power to displacement ratio, high performance Yamaha head and the raspy sound 1ZZ-FE: I will give him my tech, reliability and family name After 9 months: 2ZZ-GE: Lets go drivin
please do the detailed review of the FX16 GTS. Let's see your setup (suspension parts, etc). those cars are underappreciated and I hear to run one requires some creativity sourcing parts.
Awesome comparison. These two are almost apples to oranges. The 4AG sounds throaty and muscular, while this particu;ar 2ZZ sounds punchy, tight, and almost bike-engine-like. They're definitely two of the best 4 cylinder sounds, but my vote has to go to the 4AG by a tiny margin. The 4AG I can't imagine getting tired of and that sound would always be addictive; the 2ZZ on the other hand I can imagine getting tired of...
Really cool comparison. I have trouble choosing between these two engines as they share alot of the iconic Yamaha cylinder head sound. Intake sounds better on 4age(seems to have ITBs so it would), exhaust sounds a hair better on 2zz imo.
So Unfair! 2ZZ the winner. I just built one for my MR2/S. 4A-GE SOOOO NICE, but sound does is not witnessed due to exhaust and engine at front. Lotus has clear advantage for sound, and doubled by not having to wrap exhaust around front of engine.....2zz strait out the back! Mr. P
Great stuff, love these sound battles. Corolla is my preference sound wise. The lotuses always sound better from outside the car in my experience, more like a sport bike if you run a test pipe. Imo the cam change over and transmission ratios are poorly matched stock. It forces you to drive a smooth car in an overly aggressive fashion to extract speed. Loved that old supercharged miata whine too.
Man, they both sound so good! Quite similar too, but I'm a bit into the ITB sound on the 4age so I guess I'd go with that. Lotus sounds more like a sportbike, which is cool too! Thanks Sushpants!
Disregarding the fact that the 2ZZ goes like the bomb, and just thinking pure sound... The 2ZZ just buzzes, not saying it sucks as an engine or anything, but its just too new, too perfected, to have an actual unique sound. Whereas the 4AGE has all the 70-80`s tech, designed with traditional methods, and a bit of 90`s stuff like ITB`s, ODB and it still retains traditional distributor (albeit electronic) instead of COP`s etc, and as a result it just sounds better. I think even 2ZZ with ITB`s doesnt sound as good as any 4A-GE.
For all out power, the 2zz is the way to go. The 2zz is more of an evolution like the k20 became after the b18, but, the 2zz just doesn't have a great sounding induction noise which is why it's more often covered with a loud exhaust.
I cant decide they both sounds really awesome omfg, 2zz redline banging and 4age itb suction noise 😋😋 4age more of a fun car sound and 2zz racecar sound, I love both
I might be biased but I think the 4age sounds better. It really brings back the memories when I used to hoon around with my ae86. I'm currently deciding between a fully built 20v or a Beams or a 2zzge with itbs..... But my dumbest requirement is that it has to sound like the 4age if I don't use a 4age engine.
4ag is just one of the best sounding engines ever for some reason or another... love the zz series too. I'm thinking of finding a beat up elise and throwing a stout 16v build 4a in it now... maybe do the 7a
What kind of brake pads are you running? I seriously recommend you aren't already, run brake pads designed to not overheat past 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. My personal recommendation for a daily driver touge brake pad is the Endless MX72. For my vehicle, because it's a slightly-overweight crossover, I run the Endless MX72PLUS as an extra precaution against severe fade for long downhill runs. If you're not looking to spend an absurd amount, G-Loc, Carbotech, and Project Mu's Thailand-made brake pads are good options too.
To me, the preference doesn't really matter. I have a Toyota Celica GT and my original 1zz sounds like the 4A-GE and the custom motor I'm putting in my Celica IS the lotus Elise 2zz full swap in all. I think both of them have their distinct unique sounds that I like.
I'm a 4A-GE die hard fan. But I really love seeing the 2ZZ Destroy any Honda engines. 4A-GE sounds outstanding! The Yamaha 2ZZ also sounds great but by a small margin the 4A-GE took the win. Love both engines. Especially if it gaps any Honda V-Tec. Toyota's Beams engines is also a gem. 3S-GE should also get into the comparison test. I'd like to see all three in a sound test, 0-60, 1/4 mile run numbers and a track lap with all three on a time attack action. All in to beat all Hondas as a goal! 4A-GE VS B16. 2ZZ VS K20. 3S-GE VS K24. THEN I'd like to see nissan CA18DET, SR20VE, KA24DET VS the winner of Toyota VS Honda. Then see if Mazda has anything to bring to the table. You definitely bring the best against the best. You're never scared!!! Love your vids brother. Keep them coming.
I've owned both, and the 2ZZ is better in every single way, including sound. The 4A has a grunty induction noise, but the 2ZZ blows it away as soon as it hits lift. From the video, it sounded like you were short shifting the 2ZZ in the driving and launch comparisons. Didn't hear it hit lift at all.
2zz sounds better but in terms of durability and service life 4age is the go to option of course plus the sound can be changed by modding of course overall good detailed comparison
I got two 4AGE... My blacktop put in STARLET HATCH BOX and my silvertop with 32size turbo i put in GLX TOYOTA BOX TYPE... MY silvertop is the best in drift with 32turbo...
4age with ITBS FTW... I will say that it's hard to compare the two since it's not apples/apples. the 4age sounds better on induction naturally... you hear more exhaust on the 2zzfe-thats actually par for the course too because the exhaust is shorter... I don't think I've heard a 2zz w/ITBs... that'd be an awesome comparo... of course exhaust to exhaust I think the Lotus would win regardless but especially with exhausts like Kriessieg or Arqray... there's just no comparison in that regard. anyway, another great video... subbed
I personally decided to go for the audio experience of having ITBs and revving past 8k rpms so i went with the 20v. If you're looking for absolute power, then definitely go with the 2zz.
The 4AGE for sho'. The intake noise in a front engine car. Mid-engined cars don't always get the sound out. The Corolla also is more useful for IKEA trips :-D
2zz is superior both in fuel efficiency and power. It's bigger and has more advanced timing/lift control. In terms of sound, the 4AGE sounds much more raw and has a proper scream.
