"You've never shown this much foresight!" ...Starline hasn't been paying attention. Eggman always has a Plan B. He is always running MULTIPLE plots to take over the world so that if one is taken down by factors he couldn't forsee, he can just abandon it and focus on the next instead. And he always, ALWAYS escapes because he plans for his own defeat in any gambit as well as for his success. In Sonic Adventure, despite being absolutely assured of his Egg Carrier being invincible, he STILL BUILT AN ENTIRE BACKUP EGG CARRIER JUST IN CASE. Eggman has nothing BUT Foresight. He is practically the GOD of foresight. Doctor Starline plans for every single detail, and that was his flaw. When his plans went wrong he didn't know what to do because he couldn't be flexible. If even a tiny detail goes off from his plan it collapses. Eggman plans for every possibility. If his plans go wrong he can adapt them on the fly, and if he discovers something that can be to his advantage, or detriment, he didn't know about... it becomes part of his plan on the spot. Starline never could have outplanned Eggman. Or truly outsmarted him. Pure hubris is what took Starline down.
Most of his tools are flexible too, the egg carrier aa you said his best defense and escape is often always integrated into his mechs in a way atleast early on haven't seen more recent ones but the way that it connects and seems to be easily modified his egg carrier is another strength
@xXYannuschXx He did take precautions. He had absolute control of the metal virus and its zombot victims... at first. Then it did what viruses always do and mutated... and kept mutating and changing... and over time these mutations made it impossible to control it and the zombots the original way. But he had a backup method of control ready, devices he could implant into individual zombots to re-establish his control if he lost it. However, the same problem arose, the virus began steadily evolving immunity to that control system too, and as the metal virus kept mutating and evolving it became apparent that it would eventually mutate away any control method he devised... at which point he abandoned all plans regarding it and withdrew. As for a vaccine, creating one was not only impossible but it would run counter to the entire point of the virus: everyone everywhere being enslaved to Eggman's will.
That’s the difference between the two. Robotnik has never called himself a failure. he admits he’s made mistakes but doesn’t see them as utter failures. He is a scientist so failures are merely seen as setbacks.

It is a game. Eggman flat out tells Starline that, if he wanted, he could have carpet bombed Sonic into oblivion, but that just isn't fun. He was furious at Starline for trying to lure Sonic into an exploding bunker.
@@Bluesit32 that’s like with bowser, who we know can rip entire islands out of the ground and bust through *the moon* losing to a set of questionably in shape plumbers. There’s a reason there’s always a kill switch at the end of the fight. It’s all a game. Each time the stakes need to be higher, the designs grander, the spectacle flashier. Yk, something like remaking the universe in your image, or in eggman’s case, holding the planet hostage. Subtle right? And it’s not like Mario and sonic don’t enjoy the game also. How many times has sonic had the opportunity to blow robotniks head off, yet he usually lets him go or works with him to take down something else.
I only just realized that around the "No, Doctor..." panel, he's straight up just rising from the rubble like another of his machines. The Emperor was never his desperation weapon, nor was it just any old ploy. He arranged this SPECIFICALLY so he could personally beat Starline senseless with his bare hands because HE is the weapon.
One of the better explanations I've seen is that Dr. Eggman is like that because he goes up against SONIC. Sonic is too fast for Dr. Eggman to get hung up on contingencies normally, because that's time wasted when he could be building the next thing. So instead he just keeps things rolling, always jumping to the next plan just to keep up with the blue blur. While Starline absolutely folded as soon as he hit the first major roadblock. Because when Dr. Eggman isn't going against the literal fastest thing alive, he has time to take things apart piece by piece and think things through much more thoroughly.
One thing to take from this is that Robotnik keeps learning to adapt and change to try to see what he could create to snare and best Sonic. He represents those who never give up after a mistake, and learns from it. Essentially, he learns how to fail better and use that to improve himself. Dr. Starline is like a lot of people who have been conditioned terribly on the concept of failure in a derogatory way. That even one mistake or certain factors unreachable due to specific things makes you unable to find success no matter what you do. A crippling insecurity if you let it run your very life. Dr. Starline potential is bogged down by trying hard not to fail, and when he does, he freaks out due to factors in his life that skewed his perception of what failure is at its simple nature, but other insecure people make it worse than it seems because they struggle to find success too. The platypus was so lost in thought over his failure of surpassing Eggman, he didn't see his demise he had seconds to avoid, but did not act in time.
@HalfTangible, and that's not counting how Sonic's friends in the situation since Sonic's many friends are threats to Eggman only lesser than Sonic's threat to Eggman.
Now Starline really knows what it feels like to be Eggman. "I planned everything out to the smallest detail. I had every advantage. Accounted for every contingency. And I still lost. He destroyed all that effort in MINUTES." Sounds like how a little blue hedgehog sabotages a mustachioed scientist's schemes.
Eggman is super strong but he just refuses to use his strength for some reason, like how he single handedly destroyed a wall with his fist in sonic lost world

Starline was nothing but a bag of tricks, so when he took them all away, he not only knew he could beat him hand to hand, but wanted to as to make a fool of him. Trying that kind of maneuver on Sonic would end with him back on his but without his mustache with a throbbing headache. If it was anyone else, he would have used his tech, but Starline needed to be humbled.
Thing people fail to remember is that Eggman makes his plans FLEXIBLE because he’s fighting *Sonic.* EVERYTHING can go wrong when you’re fighting this world’s equivalent of Super Man. It’s a miracle that Eggman can even stand up to let alone fight Sonic. People all too regularly forget that Eggman puts double, triple, quadruple redundancies in his plans and still loses only because of how overpowered Sonic is. Starline got by on a fluke. He’s competent, but he effectively barged in while everyone else was preoccupied and declared himself superior. Eggman, finally going toe to toe with someone as… RIGID in mindset as Starline, realized how easy it’d be to exploit his rigidity. Starline planning everything out WAS his downfall. Like it or not, Eggman LEARNS, and he learned from Sonic that it’s easiest to beat someone when they think **they** are in total control. Plans always go wrong, and Starline continually planning everything down to a tee meant that Eggman just had to wedge himself in at the right time and… well… screw it up. Starline wasn’t going to account for any mishaps… Eggman was. His entire CAREER was filled with mishaps. He just used Starline’s mindset against him. This is what happens when Sonic media gets good writing.
Depending on when you count the timeline of sonic, you could say he's been adapting since sonic 1 on the genesis if not sooner. You can see this in how his traps evolved even back in Sonic 2. By sonic 3 and knuckles, Robotnik had even developed a viable, albeit unsuccessful strategy against super transformations, even if that strategy was simply stall until the form ran out of energy.
This is the kind of Eggman I want in Sonic games, an actual mastermind with backup plans for his backup plans, who can outsmart the smartest beings in his verse on a whim
It's the thing Sonic Forces came closest to getting right. "I knew you'd blow up my death ray, so I made a fake one to divert your attention. You're too late now. Game over."
I mean, most of those children-sized characters can send stuff weighing tons flying with their bare hands and destroy super advanced robots. Not to mention the various insane abilities they have. Sure Eggman could likely handle the average human but Sonic & co. are on another level.
Eggman doesn't want to just kill Sonic. He's said himself that if that was all he wanted, he could just carpet-bomb entire regions until he got him. He wants to _BEAT_ Sonic. Have one of his plans come out on top, first try. Think what happened to Sonic in Forces, but without the successful rescue later. He doesn't refine and re-attempt the same plan, because that's not his style. If he particularly likes an individual machine, he'll repair and upgrade it, but he'll make it something NEW in the process. Metal Sonic is about the only such exception in that regard. It's not about beating Sonic. It's about proving that his intellect and creativity, and creations can overcome Sonic's raw power and speed. Eggman is _always_ holding back against Sonic, because "Victory by any means" is not what he wants. Eggman wants "Victory by _MY_ means."

Starline’s whole edgelord persona crumbled when he got fed hands by the Villain notorious for having anyone else’s fight his battles for him and cowering in fear when that fails. And he got quite litterally ragdolled

Considering in comics and games, eggman has been shown to do so many superhuman feats like outrunning sonic in multiple games, breaking walls and ice with his bare hands, etc. Getting your butt whopped in a hand to hand fight by eggman is somewhat normal. Also at the end of the day, he's always viewed facing sonic as a little game anyways. He literally shows that he respects the crap out of him, to the point where eggman flat out has said that he could always just end him on the spot. Same with Sonic, as he's had more than enough times to kill Eggman on the spot.
I tend to forget, the freedom fighters are superhuman by Mobian standards. Starline is all tech, and Eggman is several feet taller, and heavier than an anthropomorphic platypus. It is not difficult to yeet a normal toddler when all you fight, day in day out, is super toddlers.
The day Eggman drops the ego and focuses on doing as much as he can regardless of himself is the day he wins, but it's also the day he stops being Eggman

We overlook his design choice for each mech with his signature face and smile. So when he himself shows that face in the shadows with his grinning face he emits the terror of what the image truly bestows, FEAR. He is the EGGMAN.
Quick reminder that Eggman is still and always has been a scary villain, he never lost his touch, sure he can be a tad goofy, but his mind is always calculating his mistakes, his repetitive nature is not arrogance but him experimenting with multiple similar trials, each slightly different, every bit of information is stored and processed into his mind, he’s always learning and adapting

This showed that Eggman can actually be a threat against his opponents, but I think the reason Eggman was able to beat Starline was because he could predict what Starline would do against him, which is why Eggman can't defeat Sonic, Sonic is very unpredictable in a fight so Eggman is unable to predict what Sonic will do
This, plus as he himself stated previously Eggman doesn't typically go for the easy option against Sonic. What we see here is what Eggman's capable of when he takes the kid's gloves off.
Eggman is a scientist and more than likely modified his own body whether through augmented biology or by cybernetic enhancements. He is more than capable of just simply punching people into oblivion, but chooses not to most of the time.
Well, It's a universe with walking talking, speedy, spindashing, strong animals. What makes us so confident that the humans there can't do the same and usually just choose to rely on technology?
People make the mistake of thinking "Haha, Eggman can't even defeat a speedy blue hedgehog!" What people should be really thinking: "Oh f*ck, it takes running around at the speed of sound to even have a snowball's chance of winning..." Thinking about it, the reason why Dr. Robotnic might have obvious flashing weak points on his machines is because those points are the reason the rest of the robot is INVINCIBLE. Theoretically, Sonic, with his powers, should be able to break Robotnic's machines in any way he desires. Yet, it's only damaged when the glowing weak points are attacked. My theory is that they are some kind of kinetic force negation devices, that convert forces that would normally cause structural failure into light energy, which is then dispersed out of the robot. Once these are destroyed, whatever remaining latent kinetic energy that wasn't dispersed destroy the machine.
Or ya know that's just a videogame mechanic for players to know when to attack the enemy since that doesn't explain every other robot that Eggman has in his arsenal that doesn't have a glowing weak point yet breaks like their made of styrofoam in one hit. That includes from everyone else who's fought them. Eggman goes at Sonic more like a slow burn to just prove his superiority while ignoring everything else until it comes back to bite him in the ass. That includes Starline here, during the Metal Virus arc in that Starline went out of his was to impress Eggman in recruiting the Zeti to control the Metal Virus. Only for the Zeti to betray them because Starline didn't do his homework about Eggman and his relationship with the Zeti to which they kicked him off the ship, took the Emeralds to supercharge themselves, and nearly took over the world themselves all because Eggman overlooked what his fanboy was doing at the time.

But I am thinking of the ramifications, and this is now my personal head canon. Speaking of which, I'll add another: Intelligence is not equal to wisdom. Intelligence is about being able to accomplish something with science; wisdom is about being able to figure out if you should or shouldn't. And yes, there's a lot of things Robotnic and Starline just shouldn't have done. I think the problem is that, while they are genius inventors, they SUCK at being commanders. Their primary tactics seem to be "Random bullsh*t, GO!" If Sonic had gone up against an actually competent strategist, say, Thrawn from Star Wars, he'd probably lose. I personally would be trying everything in my power to take away Sonic's primary asset, which is his speed. However if it is Archie Sonic, screw that, ain't going anywhere NEAR that.
I think eggman purposely builds weak points into his mechs to test sonic. He once said he keeps sonic around for outside stimulus, as every engineer needs some outside variable to motivate themselves and to compete against. In other words, eggman keeps sonic around to test himself.
I think people forget that his fight with sonic is a game to eggman. Especially more so in the comics. He loves his mad scientist role, and plays is perfectly. But it sometimes undermines the fact that he is, undeniably, completely INSANE in a way that makes him way more dangerous than people assume.

you learned you lesson the HARD WAY starline. eggman is not to be messed with he's not like sonic who will put up with you. eggman is a user, he uses everything he has to complete his goals _no matter the cost_ . it doesn't matter if that involves saving sonic and teaming up with him or using innocent mobians like you, he will do whatever it takes to win and rule the world and he _ALONE_ will be the one to sit on a golden throne nobody else. thats the type of person eggman is.
People forget that the only thing stopping Eggman from taking over, is sonic himself. Without sonic Eggman would’ve won a long time ago and this shows how sadistic he can be
The start of the IDW comics actually plays after Eggman ruled the earth for half a year because he managed to trap Sonic. The world was only freed from him because they busted Sonic out. A really long time passed and they're still dealing with consequences of the initial conquest all the way up to issue 65 and his first major ploy with the metal virus almost succeeded and I'd argue its failure was entirely due to Dr. Starline lacking the foresight he ironically accused Eggman of lacking by summoning the Six. People forget how frightening Dr. Ivo Robotnik can be because of how he has been portrayed in the games in the past few games and shows. They just went overboard with the goofyness. I'm happy IDW didn't go that path
it's not even just sonic, it's his strange obsession with him. Eggman basically trips on his own brain every time That Hedgehog is involved because he has a very specific idea of what defeating him looks like and circumstances simply fail to align for that idea to come to fruition because, in short, sonic is so fast it's OP. I think Egg said to starline himself once "I could nuke him from orbit at any time but THAT wouldn't prove anything". tldr: if he wasn't out to specifically defeat sonic in such away as to prove his unfathomable genius and superiority, he would have just drone struck his home like he was Obama and Sonic was an Iraqi kid in 2009 and it would have been over.

And that he competes with a supersonic hedgehog daily, eggman only looks weak because he is constantly compared to sonic. When you realize he is hard enough to take a hit from sonic, and pilot a mech (and other assorted machinery) fast enough to keep up with the supersonic hedgehog, PLUS he can canonically outrun sonic in the games, you realize eggman is borderline superhuman!
Fun fact: Eggman can in fact throw hands. Even knuckles has a hard time as Eggman has the superior height and reach advantage when not including added augment equipment. And explains why most characters don't directly engage him alone or in close quarters. Eggman is prideful and spiteful yes but as the video shows, he isn't an idiot. Mistakes are quickly analyzed and touched upon to create fail safes and countermeasures.
People seem to forget that Doctor Eggman loses so much because he goes against demigod hedgehog Sonic and his friends. Normal people? with normal physiques? Obstacles to be tossed aside like paper. He COMPLETELY defeats that duck; Outsmarts him at every turn, and when the chips are down, THROTTLES HIM.

It's funny because Starline probably wouldn't have been smashed like a flyswatter if he didn't attempt kicking Eggman... then again, that platypus was doomed to fail from the moment he decided to give the veterans a lesson.
Sonic by himself is fast enough to break the laws of physics, and he has Tails at his side, the only one smart enough to rival Eggman. In some versions, he has Knuckles and Amy on the team, two bruisers who crumple metal like paper. And Eggman *still* manages to fight them to a standstill on multiple occasions. He is not the one with whom to fuck.
Yeah, that had to be the one thing he never expected. He's a fat guy who travels in a hovership and pilots mechs. How tough could he be? Apparently, tougher than a psychotic platypus.
Remember eggman is the equivalent of a 8 foot tall absolute unit, sonic characters are really small close to him the reason he doesn't throw hands often is because he might be a bit of a glass cannon
And also because most of team sonic have their powers to back them up. But im fairly sure Eggman could manhandle most of the animal people, including the ones in team sonic without innate powers like Tails.
Considering Starline idolized Eggman and brought him back when he lost his memories as Mr. Tinker. This beating was very much poetic karma and well deserved. Being ended by the very monster he brought back from the dead.
The thing that this duck guy (I haven’t read the IDW comics) didn’t consider is that Eggman and Sonic have a Megamind-Metroman dynamic, they always put on a show while holding back their full power so that fighting doesn’t become boring they always banter and play up their roles of mad scientist and teenage superhero but against other enemies they are a force to be reckoned with.
For some context: First off, the dude is a platypus. And you are right about the Megamind/Metroman dynamic. It's essentially the entire arc with Starline, really. He first showed up asking to be Eggman's sidekick, seeing him as his idol and acting like the #1 fan who know all the Eggman trivia. That rose tinted glasses is gone when he saw his hero in action however. He saw Eggman as a bumbling fool who get too dramatic with fighting Sonic instead of the objective, thus ending up losing every time. For Eggman, he visibly get upset and almost wring Starline's neck when the platypus went and booby trapped Sonic and Silver with an explosive. He always pretend to ignore or dismiss Starline's ideas, but is actually paying attention at everything he said. Just in case. To paraphrase Eggman: "I could always just carpet bomb the hedgehog and his friends, but if I don't conquer the world MY WAY then what's the point?"
It's easy to forget that despite always relying on his mechs for battle, Eggman is still a grown ass man compared to the small mobians and can still throw hands by himself
@lorefox201, if anything, this showed Starline why Sonic is THAT much of a powerhouse that he's the only thing that keeps Eggmah from no diffing the entire IDW verse.
2:40 this has got to be one of the creepiest moments in sonic. I never though Eggman could do much of anything in a fight without some kind of robot. But this fight just blows that idea out of the water
Starline cries and bitches and moans. Robotnik instead goes, "Okay, here is a list of the 2347 things that went wrong. Next time I am accounting for them!" ... while raging and throwing a fit. 😂 It's all a matter of how they react, mostly.
What eggman probably feels every time sonic fucks shit up, but unlike Perry the Platypus over here, the good doctor has an unbreakable will to defeat that rotten hedgehog.

Lets not forget, eggman is STILL a power class and has an IQ of 300. somehow outruns sonic to get into his mech, punch a wall down if he worked out more, and was close enough to dominate the world. He is still and will always a force to be reconned with if sonic is not their to stop him at every turn. (these are feats I've seen him do in sonic games not counting the Olympics.)
@@purpderp Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Eggman keeps pace with or flat out outruns Sonic on his way to the Death Egg Robot. He later repeats this feat in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. This is pretty common knowledge.

It's more than that. Eggman listened to everything Starline said while maintaining an air of indifference, as if ignoring him. It was that behavior that caused Starline to never consider that he would develop counter measures. It's brilliant.
Starline _did_ rival Eggman *in Intellect,* but _his Ego and Idolization of the Doctor_ is what was used against him. Dr Eggman could easily see that *Starline wouldn't let himself stay just a lackey,* and aimed to be _at least Equal Partners with him..._ So Eggman started by trying to *dissuade Starline's Emulation of him:* he acted like _the most Egotistical Jerk he could_ towards him, but it backfired - *Starline's obsession grew greater,* and he took it _as another Lesson;_ So he *kicked Starline out much softer than he could've,* and carried on, knowing that he'd likely have to deal with this problem _more thoroughly later_ - *he wasn't Wrong;* Then Dr Starline made his move - _taking control of most of his Badniks_ and one of his _Largest Cities._ Bringing *his own Biological Sonic Knock-Offs* out to fight their Rivals, and *weilding a* _Heroes-Inspired_ *Powerset,* he sought to _destroy the entire City_ to bring Sonic down - wasting so much of *EGGMAN'S resources* to do it! Dr Eggman didn't want to _beat_ Starline, he wanted *to Humiliate him.* To prove to him that *No Plan* _has enough Contingencies or Fail-Safes_ to succeed against someone *thinking and adapting at a Super-Sonic Speed* - something _Eggman has learnt to contend with,_ *and Match* whenever he fights Sonic... Being locked out of his more Modern *Death-Egg-Class Battle Robots,* Dr Eggman chose _an older Model_ that Starline would recognize - *the Egg Emperor from Sonic Heroes.* He understood that _when_ he out-piloted Starline with it, he'd resort to *the Tri-Power Glove - and waste its Energy* in *a display of the same powers* the Egg Emperor had fallen to previously. This would leave Starline with _just his Hypno-Glove_ to work with - a laughable issue to protect himself from. *All* of this comes from just _Eggman being Observant_ and being _able to Think on the Fly_ - if Starline could come up with something he didn't predict, *then* they'll have proven themselves to him! Needless to say, Dr Starline _failed to surpass his Expectations._ His Ego made him do *everything* Eggman predicted he would, leaving him _Powerless in a one-on-one physical Fight_ - where Dr Eggman *towered over him, literally!* A couple of attacks _unsuited for Intellectuals like themselves_ later, and Starline was *Broken - Physically and Psychologically...*
seeing eggman outsmarting a villian like that only shows how good is he as a villian and how formidable is sonic as his nemesis making him look like a clawn most of the time

@@luiginumbers6268the thing is, he expected the orbit reentry and fall to kill sonic, he is even like "I shouldn't even be surprised at this point you managed to survive THAT" and it was all cus Light Gaia bailed him from the fall, there is also that Sonic equally could have just finished eggman, but chooses not to because that's his moral code, he says it in this comic against Surge, him killing eggman or any villain would mean removing their ability to choose and exercise their freedom, he let's everyone choose and be free to do what they want but will stop them if they want to stop that for others, they both are ideal rivals for each other with their own morals and the moment one kills the other forgoing them, they will have lost in the end too
Exactly, it's not the endgoal for Eggman/Robotic, but the process of defeating Sonic. Sonic won't kill out of his moral compass, and Eggman 'fights' for every victory against Sonic: enemies with an unconscious respect for each other, even if Eggman doesn't realize it.
I _adore_ the throwback to Sonic Heroes, seeing the Egg Emperor come out of mothballs for another epic battle. But not as much as I adore Robotnik reminding everyone why he's the only Doctor anyone remembers! 🥚
It would be funny but like, all of his plans already require an incredible amount of prep time. You don’t chain entire planets together and build 5 amusement parks on them without prep time. Also the intro sequence to sonic unleashed was actually him pulling a similar stunt and using prep time… he just kind of made the mistake of not confiscating his opponents weapon before discarding the loser. (In unleashed’s case the chaos emeralds, in this case he confiscated the hypnotic glove)
I've seen eggman create robots,survive an explosion,survive the most dangreous situations,but ever in my life.....never seen eggman weave a kick and throw hands OH MY LORD I'D BE COOK IF I GET PULLED UP AND SEEN HIM
Sonic is stupidely powerfull. Same for his friends. The fact eggman can even challenge him in the first place should tell you everything you’d ever need to know about eggman
he basically has been, according to the comics. he knows he can defeat sonic and crush the resistance with ease, but he wants to do it his own way. like starline said, he could easily just carpet bomb sonic in his sleep and that would be that, but eggman's pride is far too deep into the rivalry to resort to cheap tactics like that. he wants to destroy sonic with a creation that can surpass him. a mech or a robot that can defeat his one true nemesis. if he can't beat one fast hedgehog at his own game, is he really the greatest inventor?
Starline. Buddy. Amigo. Bro-ski. You were going against a scientist who had the scientific prowess to tango with a hedgehog fast enough to break physics several times over, AND can physically throw hands with some of the stronger fighters the good guys have!
