"Epic Off Grid" is an extremely misleading name. It is NOT off grid and cannot replace Starlink. The two shouldn't even be compared. Epic Off Grid still requires a cell signal and there are huge swaths of this country that has no cell signal. Especially for us boondockers, Starlink is the only way to go.

Epic off Grid is the company name as a whole. They also sell lithium batteries and other off grid items. This router and service is just one of their offerings. This is better than Starlink in cell areas only of course. Starlink is for non cell areas with no trees.

What about T-Mobile's 55+ plan? Their top plan allows 50 GB of 4G hotspot data. But the phone is allow unlimited 4k UHD streaming. You could take the streaming from the phone and "mirror" it to your TV, and save the hotspot data for your laptop. Have you looked into this?

We have that 100gb of hotspot on our ATT phones and can also stream direct to our apple tv for unlimited. So either way works for sure

$60 a month is very expensive! i live in the uk and i can get unlimited data for £10-£15 a month which is about $11.80-17

Freaking Starlink .. it is always interrupted service.. I am sitting here watching the circle roll as it tries to connect..

Starlink is for folks in rural areas without access to other options. Many complain about trees and pricing when they have better options available. My guess the price increase is to deter everyone wanting it. I will pay because I have no other options. I have spent hundreds of dollars on modems from shady unlimited internet providers only to cancel and return hardware or just add another modem to the collection. For what is is and what it is for, Starlink is a necessary option. Between Starlink and cellphone hotspot, I am covered.

I will never use Verizon after they lied to me about how to download years of photos after I left them for T-Mobile. Verizon said i had 30 days to download my Verizon-server-only photos. What happened is 6 days after my transfer to T-Mobile, not 30 days, they stopped my photo/account access when the billing cycle ended. I called them up, hassled with them for two weeks, and finally paid fees, transferred my new T-Mobile phone to Verizon because a) I needed a phone, and b) needed the same phone number to access my photos/account. So i restarted Verizon just to download my years of pictures. They assured me I had 30 days to download my pics so everything was fine. I canceled my service Verizon account knowing I had 30 days to download pics, and on the billing cycle change on the 6th of the month I lost access again. I called them up ask him where my 30 days of downloads went and they finally figured out there was no 30 days of download, only download capability through the end of the billing cycle. Lies, lies, lies. Meanwhile, by starting and stopping my T-mobile account I lost a $300 phone discount with their new service, and if i canceled and went back to Verizon i would lose more money. So, rather than lose more money with Verizon and T-Mobile, I gave up on the pictures of my kids for the last 15 years on the Verizon server. Thanks for letting me vent.

We are currently still using portability with our residential plan but do not know how long that will last. Then we will go to the RV plan because we will have no choice. The problem with the RV plan is that you are deprioritized all the time. At least with the home service with portability, we could turn off portability when we were in our residential service area AND not be deprioritized. We will roll with the changes as we absolutely love our Starlink, especially when we get way way off the grid. We used to make due with cell boosters and such but it could be a struggle at times in the back country. Since day one with the Starlink, it was a no hassle extremely reliable service. Everything is getting so much more expensive!

We don’t do a ton of back country, so I haven’t had the absolute need for Starlink. I think it also gets cheaper in the future once they get the ability for mass subscriptions and stable connectivity with those numbers.

@@Pagosa The whole selling point of Starlink is being away from cell towers to the point it is necessary. If you stay in places with any tower signal, other, cheaper options are definitely available. For many, this doesn't work for them so they choose starlink even at any cost.

Just a tip: you can pick up older model Apple TV models that have been refurbished for a fraction of the original cost. I got one 3 years ago for my classroom to connect my personal Macbook air as well as my desktop Apple with my SmartBoard. Works fantastic and allows me to stream RU-vid educational videos and the like.

Your system is also limited to the cell network. We can be in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception and still be able to work with a Starlink.

Yes, you should do starlink if planning to be off the cellular grid for sure. Perfect world would be to have both so you are always connected.

Does the service with verizon require a contract? Does it have any early termination fees?

No, it's month to month. Can even pause for 3 months a year at $20/month

Our LTV comes with a Weingard ConnecT 2.0 Wi-Fi Extender with 4G LTE. It is/was an RV Show Model, so no option there, but since we have it, we are wondering if it is worth switching to the Epic, or working with what we have. Any thoughts? By the way, it's a 2023 MBL and we pick it up on March 17th, so excited!

Note: Cell phone is T-Mobile, can use that as a hotspot, can pick up a SIM card to add the Weingard as a new line....

The Winegard will work if you get a plan that you like and the correct SIM card (It's the larger type, BTW). However, the clunkiness of the app, and getting it online is very frustrating. I'm a fan of the Epic, as I can use that anywhere, while the winegard is stuck to the roof.

You can. I did it so I could turn off the Starlink in months where I was sticking to in-town type RV stays. Once you change, they don't let you go back.

Not true about the speeds. I live in DFW, routinely get 100-160 Mb/s down and 30 Mb/s up throughout the day.

@@Pagosa Residential with portability add-on. Last bill sent yesterday. No emails as of yet informing me I need to change or that my service will change to another plan. Regardless, ithe service has been outstanding.

@@Pagosa Even if they did, I’d move to whatever they make me move to. The service is not comparable. There is always a question of how good the cell reception will be at a certain location. There is never a question for me about the Starlink connection which is invaluable when I HAVE to be on Teams calls every day.

@@alesko5 To some extent I agree with you but there are parts of what you are saying that aren't right based on experience. There are definitely places where the speed isn't good. There are also times when there just isn't enough of a sky view to use it. Some parks just don't have views through the trees and you can't just park wherever. That being said, it is always best to have as many options as possible if you rely on the internet. I have ATT on my Winegard on the roof, I have T-Mobile home internet (my favorite when I am near good reception because I only pay 25 a month for it and it gives super fast speed when it has a signal) and I have other cell phones for tethering as well. I do wish Starlink was cheaper, but it is fricken satellites. At the end of the day folks resell or get commission on the products that they are pitching on their blog and youtube. That is how this works, so take all reviews with a grain of salt. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't for people. If you stay near cities a lot, a standard T-Mobile 5g type connection is great. Some have best luck with Verizon-based service. If you stay in the desert, boondock in out of the city areas, or if you go out of the country, Starlink is great no matter the cost.

Just received Epic Off Grid. Paid the 30 bucks to have it plug and play. 5 min. later was up and streaming. I'm about 30 miles SE of Houston on a small farm. Down load was at about 22.... Thanks for the heads up on this unit !
