the old man in the chair was president abraham lincoln. who outlawed slavery in america. the descendants of the free slaves started blues music and early rock n roll music.

From song facts: Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2013, Taupin said: "It was a very dark song about how club life in LA was being killed off and live acts had no place to go. ... When we spoke with Martin Page in 2014, he explained: "To me, 'We Built This City' is live music's been pulled away from the streets of LA. The old man sitting is Abraham Lincoln the American president who freed the slaves. That is the Lincoln Memorial Monument in Washington DC to honor him.

Great song I was even thinking about sending you this song a while back Fay. I love this song even though it was supposedly one of the worst songs of the 80s. I still don't get why? It's kind of talking about how music executives were ripping off bands back in the 80s. And how a lot of night clubs in Los Angeles, California were going under at the time leaving a lot of bands without work. thanks Fay. 🧡💖💜 You're the best.
