Street Photography - Today I'm sharing my street photography tips in Tokyo Japan - what settings to use for street photography and what gear.
▶︎ Edited with My NEW Lightroom Presets Pack: goo.gl/tLja2x
How to approach images you want to capture.
Read below for detailed settings

▶︎ Shot on geni.us/sh7ZtEc (Amazon) with this lens geni.us/najoDU (Amazon)
▶︎ All of the gear that I use: goo.gl/1KwiVE
▶︎ Lenses for Street Photography:
- Sony: geni.us/oPe8AR (Amazon) & geni.us/MdaMd (Amazon) (I put the cheaper versions)
- Canon: geni.us/Br8LcvO (Amazon) or geni.us/4XWk (Amazon) or geni.us/fTpi (Amazon)
- Nikon: geni.us/UBELT (Amazon) or geni.us/Ytjt (Amazon)
Note: If a Sigma Art version is available for those lenses and your camera system get it, it's really good.
- M4/3: 12mm or 42.5mm depending on your camera system.
The camera you use in Street Photography is really not that important. It's really all about how you view a scene and approach it. The settings that I share here are really made for you to concentrate on your image VS your camera.
Settings I use 90% of the time:
- Camera mode: Aperture priority (A), f/2.8 for shallow depth of field or anything above f/5.6 for cityscapes & scenes.
- Minimum shutter speed: 1/250s for most days, 1/500s for fast objects/cars/bikes...
- My ISO range: 100-12800 (I'm lucky)
- Blurry crowds shot handheld: 1/5s, 1/4s anything below gets very tricky handheld!
▶︎ Mirrorless Cameras trendy for 2018:
- Olympus OMD EM 1geni.us/eUGpxE (Amazon)
- Sony A7iii A6500 geni.us/0JvHhnm (Amazon) or geni.us/8R1F (Amazon)
- Fuji PEN x-h1f geni.us/szhyF (Amazon) or geni.us/GPyK (Amazon)
- Panasonic GH5 G9 geni.us/xh3juN (Amazon) or geni.us/8Oleo (Amazon)
Remember the camera is not as important as

Loved this. I lived in Japan for 18 months when I was a young man. Age 19 to 21. I played with the 56th Army Band. I took many photos and made a lot of movies. 1955 to 1958.

Been using manual mode for studio shots but I get frustrated and flustered at times when Im trying to do street photography with manual. Glad you suggested apeture mode with the settings! This should set my mind at ease. Thank you! Funny enough, the publish date of this video is the same day I was in Akihabara! Recognized many areas you shot at~

THANK YOU. So many RU-vid photography videoes are all about showing the person doing things, but offer little to no practical information you can actually use. This is the complete opposite and it's PERFECT. I loved that your shots were in there as inspiration, but that the focus was on sharing specific tips so we can go out there and do it ourselves. personally, the 70-200 f2.8 on FF is the best street lens for me as it helps train me to frame and take the pictures in public without taking a long time to get the shot, and since I take less time to take the shot with the camera up to my face it makes me less intimidating to others, if I want a small compact setup I use my xt10 with xf18-55 f2.8-4 and a Meyer Optik Gorlitz Orestegor 200 mm f4

Lots of negative comments here, but Pierre this was really helpful for me. I'm about to start traveling around indefinitely and street photography is where I struggle often. Learning to get the shutter speeds, aperture, and ISO right for the crowds and environment is crucial. This is probably one of the best, and simplest, videos on the technical aspects behind street photography.

Hey Avi! For just video vlog with no need of low light, I'd use the GH5 because the stabilization is amazing, it's small and lighter than the Sony. Downside of GH5: the AF is frustrating at times and the low light sucks.

"start crushing street photography" come on really? all you have done is take about camera settings. "It really doesn't matter about your gear" (at the end) you just spoke about gear for the entire video. The vlogger phenomenon with "photographers" making a channel and "teaching us how to crush" is in reality people who seem to be obsessed with technique and equipment. You rarely if ever get anything remotely insightful or interesting on these videos just a load of waffle about mirrorless vs so and so and how many af points to use. A tip to anyone wanting to take "street photographs" go fill your shelves with books, ensure that you get bored talking about and obsessing over cameras and lenses as soon as possible make lost of mistakes and do it on your own, not in a workshop with self proclaimed expert or watching videos that make people think photography stops at f stops and megapixels,

thats ludicrous, what the hell has spelling got to do with it. When people use the grammar and spelling card on picking people up on there comments it I pretty clear what kind of person they are, criticise what I say by all means but picking up on spelling and grammar is pathetic.

You give some good tips for beginners. Street photography for me is a hobby. The first requirement for any street photographer is that they have a camera of course, and any camera will be fine as long as you are comfortable with it. I prefer small and unobtrusive cameras for street work but I have also used Canon full frame with long lenses (not conducive with long stints on a busy street though). But cameras alone won't work unless you are an obsessive observer with a social and emotional connection to what is going on around you, and to your work of course. You need to have an adrenaline rush every time you put the camera to your eye and get excited about the finished image. I used to always shoot at 400 iso, f/5.6 for exteriors and 800 iso f/2 for interiors when I had my Fuji X100. With my X Pro 1 I set iso to auto and forget it, aperture value anywhere from f/5.6 to f1.4 through the day depending on the DOF I'm after. I shoot mainly for black and white but see the value of colour street photography more and more these days. Keep up the good work and promote our wonderful craft as much and as often as you can. keithtowers.zenfolio.com/

I guess the phrase can easily be dropped and even considered useless, especially for the written word. But vlogs are more personal and informal face to face conversations, the phrase recognising that others entering the conversation may have different views. So, "in my opinion", it is fine to use the phrase at least once.

Thanks Pierre. Great video and advice. I was out yesterday and was using single and then realised many subjects I was photographing were moving. I switched to continuous and got much better results, so it's good to hear you do the same. One thing I wish people would confirm in vids is when they're talking about about lense size, is whether they mean for example, 35mm on a full frame or 35mm on a cropped sensor. That would be very helpful. Other than that, great. Thanks!

Thank you Pierre for sharing and hope your wife and you enjoy the rest of your world tour! One thing that is very obvious here is that it is essential to have the right gear for travel and certainly the FF Sonys and DSLRs are not the ones to take! I have a Nikon D750 and recently bought a Olympus EM10. I simply love the EM10 Mk II for travel, street photography and landscape (the Live Composite mode is wonderful for long exposures) . It is very light, take great photos and with a prime 17mm f1.8 and a 14-42 kit lens (not the pancake version), it weighs less than my Nikon D750 body! Indeed I find very little reason for holding onto my D750 since I have not even used it this past 4 to 5 months. The Oly is a joy to use, weighs next to nothing and I am re-discovering the joy of photography once again.

Well done. You suggested 24mm and 35mm prime for street photography that's a good one I use 30mm and 50mm. Shutter speed won't necessarily freeze action at 1/250. It depends on your lens. If shooting with a 200mm lens, you won't freeze anything at 1/250 and introduce lens blur. If you're shooting on a 50mm, 1/250 is fine.
@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 6 лет назад

Might sound funny to some... But im moving from a 600D + sigma 17-50 f2.8 to a Canon PowerShot sx 150 IS. That cheap ass almost obsolete compact/bridge camera (with custom firmware) can take 14mpx raw images... Lens its far from dreamed, but image quality seems ok, focal distance its huge and 3.5-5.6 with iso 80-1600+ image stabilizer is more than ok for day pictures. and the "ninja" factor!!!! its so so great... Nobody notices you are taking pictures even compared with modern bridge cameras. The other main advantage is the really low price. Unlike any dslr/mirrorless micro 4/3 camera... You wouldn't feel bad if camera its robbed or broken.

Pierre, fantastic work, but around 8:23 you seemed to imply that Fuji had a Micro 4/3 sensor along with Panasonic and Olympus. To be clear Fuji is APS-C. But since owning the Fuji system I have found the prime lenses to be quite small and comparable to Micro 4/3 to some degree in terms of size. Thanks for the tips, great video!

Ive just finished 3 weeks in China 1 week in Bangkok doing some street photography for my first attempt and it was a lot of fun. Got some amazing shots. Normally I do landscapes and buildings. Good suggestion about minimum shutter speed.

Why you don't shoot in manual mode with Auto-ISO and set the shuter speed to 1/250 and change as you mentioned only the aperture? I think you are so more flexible if you need once a longer shuter speed.

I always love going back a revisiting your content and course materials; they are always very inspiring, encouraging, and provide so much wisdom. If you're in Av Mode, and have set the minimum shutter speed to 1/250s, how do you quickly change the shutter speed to 1/500s to freeze-capture the action? Do you have to switch into another mode to crank up the shutter speed, or is there another hack to accomplish this. Is there a benefit to simply setting everything up in Manual Mode in such a way as to "mimic" Av Mode? Thanks.

Beginner question, if your shooting city/landscape at f8/f11 etc to get everything in focus do you focus on something in the foreground or distance or does it not matter ?
