Aura was allegedly supposed to be the sequel to Telephone. She apparently killed Beyonce in the beginning of the planned music video, thus, "I killed my former and left her in the trunk on Highway 10." If you remember, the ending of the Telephone MV, she and Beyonce was escaping the police in a Pussy Wagon and it said "To be continued." 🙃
Facts about every track on ARTPOP: Aura - Originally this song was titled “Burqa”, and since the beginning Gaga wanted it to be the lead single of the album, but her label rejected it, which lead her into leaked it online by a fake name of Boris, as a revenge. Venus - This was Gaga’s first song that she fully produced (with a minimal co-production of a producer named Madeon). This song actually was supposed to be the second single of the album, and to also have a music video which would start an ARTPOP trilogy. The music video never got released. G.U.Y. - The intro voice that u hear isn’t Gaga. It’s actually a friend of her, who worked in her creative team named Sonja Durham, who unfortunately passed away. Also Gaga has explained that the “Please Retweet” means basically having sex, since, for her, the symbol looks like the number 69 in arrows. Sexxx Dreams - This song isn’t about cheating. It’s about having sex dreams about someone else while being in bed with another. Gaga said the inspiration for the song came with her private chef, who was gay, and every morning by breakfast would joke about having sex dreams about her. Also this song was one of the first choices (next to AURA) to be the lead single of ARTPOP. Jewels N’ Drugs - Lady Gaga has revealed this may be her favourite song of the album. And the producer of the song (DJ white shadow) revealed Lady Gaga came with the idea for it, when on a tour bus she asked her ex-MUA for the drugs, and her MUA gave her a bracelet, and she said “I don’t want the Jewels, I want the drugs”. MANiCURE - This song has very meanings. As the title says “Man I Cure”. It’s about manicuring your body, your spirit, and your mind. Basically she’s saying she wants to catch someone and get laid with them. Do What You Want - This song started as a solo song. But DJ white shadow (the producer) told Gaga if she wanted R. Kelly in. Since she was lots of nervous to be doing her first R&B song she loved the idea. After the allegations she dropped and deleted the song completely of every platform and every physical discs and stood by the victims side. And yes, Gaga’s inspiration for this song was the media backlash that she was receiving for her gaining weight. ARTPOP - Gaga titled this song the Swan song of the album. It was the first song she worked on for the album, and actually she wanted this song to go nowhere production wise. She says, she didn’t touched the song for a long time, and didn’t felt the need to be re-doing it. As she said, she didn’t want the “corporate world to control artists”. Let artists stick with their original ideas. Swine - This song is about Gaga’s traumatic sexual assault by an unidentified producer who was 20 years older than her, when she was only 19. This song is kind of a liberation to her. She screams and squeals throughout the whole song. The song is meant all this way, for people to feel discomfort and disgust, just like a victim of sexual assault feels. Donatella - This song is about being a fearless woman and not caring about what people say about you. She mentions and gives theme to the song of Donatella Versace, who is a friend of hers, and that she compares a lot to. Donatella has said she loved the song. Fashion! - This song was a long well waited collaboration for both Gaga and Will.i.am. He is actually the one who is making the french vocals. Mary Jane Holland - Basically Mary Jane Holland is a whole character she creates for this song inspired by when she was at Amsterdam, and died her hair brown, since she felt that her blondness belonged to the world, and it didn’t felt like her anymore. And she went out on the city, got weed and drunk at clubs, and felt this comfort she hadn’t felt for a long time. Also this song was actually thought out in Amsterdam. Dope - The first version of this song was called “I wanna be with you”, and had a whole different meaning. It was about how after she broke her hip during her tour, and she had to cancel her tour, she felt she disappointed her fans, so this was a love letter to them. It is said that the label didn’t liked it and thought the song was too childish, so she re-wrote it, and talked about her addiction to Marijuana after she broke her hip instead. Gypsy - Supposedly this song was inspired by her ex-fiancé, Taylor Kinney, when she met him. She said she felt lonely and then a boy came to her and introduced her to all his friends. He told Gaga he wanted to see the world with her and they made love all day. Applause - This is about the time Gaga broke her hip, and was in a lot of pain, and it was the applause of the fans that made her keep going. Also, the applause that can be heard on the track was recorded from one of the dates of her Born This Way ball tour.
@@BethThereseReacts ur welcome! I appreciate so much everyone who reacts to this album. It’s such a legendary album, and has a very big depth into it. The whole era was such a mess back then. It was crazy.
Thematically, despite the soaring choruses and thumping electronic beats, ARTPOP was a collective of some of Gaga's darkest experiences + thoughts. She was mostly unhappy during this era, but I personally think this is one of her strongest projects. Nothing is ever unintended with LG, especially with ARTPOP I feel, as each song is exactly what it needed to be at that time of her life. You should check out the ARTPOP commentary she put out during a radio show when the record was released - there you can go on a deeper dive and find out what this masterpiece is truly all about. #JusticeForARTPOP
Swine is actually about how Lady Gaga felt after being sexually assaulted, like the victim feels complete disgusted with themselves "pig inside a human body" refers to his abuser, she even have a live performance of this song where a person literally vomits on her, she meant by that performance that she had whole control over her body and that no one can make her feel more digusted/degraded than she herself. This album might look like a fun pop album on surface (the POP part of the album) but it actually has really deep and personal themes (the ART part)
ARTPOP was the most bizarre Gaga era, in terms of fashion. She really brought art to the pop world, every day we had 2 or 3 iconic looks and UNTIL THIS DAY I sometimes stumble upon looks I've never seen!!
I remember as if it was yesterday: - She didn't want Applause as the first single, but her record kinda forced her; - Her performance of Applause in the VMAs would be a 15min theatrical sacrifice that included a lot of blood, because it was about sacrificing yourself for the media or something like that, but the VMAs didn't like the idea and she had to change it; - The second music video was going to be Venus and Do What U Want was released as a promotional single, but DWUW was waaay more successful than Venus in the charts so her record decided to make it a music video instead of Venus; - The video was finished, but then the controversies around R Kelly came out on the media and she couldn't release it (specially because in the video she was unconscious while R Kelly did things to her body); - Then we had like a 3 month gap waiting for the music video (that was never released) and she decided to make a short film to close the era. The record didn't want to invest in any more music videos for this album so she paid for everything herself; - There were A LOT of internal disagreements in her crew and her manager (that worked with her since the beginning) left her; - She said she made more than 50 songs for this album, so she was planning on releasing ARTPOP - Part 2 through an app that they created, but this never happened because the era ended sooner than expected :( Bare in mind: we had just gone through the BTW era, which had 5 music videos, so having only 2 in this era was really disappointing. We were hoping to have one for Venus, Donatella, Swine, Gypsy... This was a sad era for Gaga and she went years without even mentioning ARTPOP.
if the fame + fame monster was about the rise and fall of fame and born this way being about political/human rights issues, artpop is a little bit of everything, a celebration of her past eras. very inspired by art, andy warhol, greek mythology & female sexual liberation. this album will forever have a special place in my heart, it was released at a very hard time in her career and even though it debuted at #1 it was received very badly by the media (the reason why she later transitions to a more vocal/stripped back album with joanne). ARTPOP is chaotic, campy & fun. i loved this reaction, i think you will love her album joanne.
also in sexxx dreams, that little raspy voice adlib answering her is supposed to represent her inner bad thoughts, that's why she sings "help me here" and her inner voice says "it was kinda nasty" she's battling her thoughts
Just a fun fact id like to add. She actually intended to make an ARTPOP act ll. Last year the gay community made a petition for her to release it and it gained so much attention she tweeted about it. Something along the lines of “thanks it crazy how something that came from a dark time in my life could be so meaningful to so many”
The Fame ✅ The Fame Monster ✅ Born This Way ✅ ARTPOP 💥💥💥 Cheek to Cheek Joanne A Star Is Born Chromatica (revisit) Love For Sale Extras (after Joanne album) - The Cure - Joanne (Where Do you think you're goin) piano version
Some details about this album. G.U.Y stands for Girl Under You, and then she says "you'll be my G.I.R.L" (Guy I Romance and Love) and people thinks she's talking about "switching roles" but she said it's just that she's a power bottom. Venus was supposed to be the 2nd single but her label switched it to Do What U Want. Aura was supposed to be the first single but the label didn't want it so Gaga leaked it on her biggest fan forum (and got banned from it) 😂 Dope was called I Wanna Be With You on early stages, she even performed it on iTunes and there's a studio version leaked. It's also beautiful, same melody, just different lyrics.
The fact that you don’t like Mary Jane holland hurts me but also same cause I didn’t like it on my first listen but then I kept listening and I ended up loving it even more
This era was heavily criticized because it’s experimental and different, maybe the message wasn’t clear like born this way, but saying it’s a flop just because it didn’t sold 1M copies in it’s first week like it’s predecessor ?? Hello this album was n1 on the BB200, and most importantly it was Gaga’s choice and ARTPOP is a fan favorite.. The era was planned to be perfect a HUGE promo budget one of the biggest ever to an album (around 22 million $) her manager left her in the middle of the era, they stopped the promotion of her second official single Do what you want with R.kelly because of his scandal.. and the label refused to give the album a chance, but yeah she changed her trajectory to sing jazz and a country/ soft rock album(Joanne) she did what she likes the most and A STAR IS BORN I’m sure you’ll love the album this was her huge comeback a masterpiece of an album. actually I would like to see you react to her live performances/music video.. not just Gaga but any other artist. ❤️
And she still did very HEAVY promotion for this album. I just think that since Applause wasn't that iconic as her previous leads, people just weren't that interested. It still had success.
ARTPOP is actually so complex. There are 3 themes, one is obviously art, the other is hybrid/coupling, the 3rd is Greek mythology. Sprinkled with her gaganess drug & fashion references. Hybrids: art & pop, each song is married to another song (except for the title track) ie: fashion/Donatella, GUY/Sexxxxdreams, Mary Jane Holland/Dope etc. In Greek mythology they had sculptures/art of the gods. The gods were named after planets (venus) and ancient Greek astrology refers to planets as travellers (gypsy).
Except Venus was the roman version of the goddess Aphrodite depicted in many classic paintings. But I understand, Venus is the most used term in this case
The song ARTPOP is actually insane. One of the most unique songs I've heard, especially coming from a pop emperess (at the time) In the first verse, art is singing to pop (“Come to me, with all your glamour and cruelty / Just do the thing that you do, and I’ll undress you” - referring to the sexual nature of pop stars and pop music today). In the second verse, pop is singing to art (“Come to me, with all your subtext and fantasy / Just do the thing that you do, in a perverse hue” - making note of how contemporary art is widely misunderstood and even seen as “perverse” or stupid even though it's just the creator's "fantasy"). In the chorus, art and pop tell each other that they can belong together as one entity without separation or distinction. In other words, ARTPOP (one word). Not Art Pop, ArtPop, or Art-Pop. It's just so high concept wrapped in a mesmerizing beat served in the most delicate & strong way, a perfect mix. I've never heard anything like it EVER. Oh and don't even get me started on the lyric "Lovers' kites are flown on beaches for public sight" like why is that sentence so beautiful dawg why did I get chills down my spine just typing it?
Hey Beth Therese! I just wanna say I really appreciate the humor and effort you put into your reactions! Glad you are enjoying your Lady Gaga journey as I have too!
@@BethThereseReacts ARTPOP was such a sad time to Gaga, back then when everybody was saying she was over, Taylor approached her in the Grammys awards ceremony (if I am not wrong) and told her she just could not stop dancing ti ARTPOP. It is underrated cause Gaga was depressed and abandoned for those who wanted her to sing hit after hit and started to tell her what to sing about. She fired them and tried to take the album to the level it deserves but at the end it just fell apart. Everyone who loves Gaga and knows what's behind ARTPOP (PAIN) understands that it is the price she paid to be free and not become a product from industry. That's why she sounds so angry in this album. We all have been there. But she was brave enough to sing it out loud. That si why truly fans love her. I Love her.
Venus was supposed to be the 2nd single from this album but it was scrapped as Do what u want (which was just a promo single) did really well on the charts.
Another thing about the R Kelly verse was that it fit sonically with the song but not meaning wise. I think it further confused people because he was talking about clubs and "getting naughty". I think it was right for gaga to remove it. I'm glad you listened to the Christina version though!
10:04 these facial reactions and the hand moves are THE MOST INTERESTING REACTION in all the video and only my opinion matters LOL. i've laughed a lot (btw MANiCURE is one of my favorite songs of ARTPOP)
Artpop is my fav album by her I listened to it when it first came out as a teenager but I appreciate it more now as an adult yass venus is definitely one of the best songs on there I'd say 1.Applause 2. Venus 3.Guy 4. Aura 5.Swine 6. Artpop 7. Do what you want then the rest arent really my vibe lol the outfits really make it the best especially the venus seashell bra one gorgeous wavy dark blonde wig my fav look ever🔥🔥🔥
Please please please react to her unreleased stuff, like Out Of Control(Drew Stevens Remix), Earthquake, Brooklyn Nights, Animal e.t.c. There so many masterpieces, you’d be shook!
When I stumbled upon your channel I legitimately was convinced you had like 200k subs, love your energy and voice! Your videos are very pleasant to watch 💖
8:51 i don't like very much this song but i too agree that the beat is really cool. DONT WANT YOUR JEWELS I WANT YOUR DRUGS DONT WANT YOUR MONEY WANT YOUR LOVE
Also the first line in Aura "I killed my former and left her in the trunk on hwy 10" can also be the continuation of the storyline in the Telephone music video. So basically she k1ll3d Beyonce...also the production of Aura kind of gives the same vibe as the time period in Telephone music video with the cowboy sound
heyoooo Beth!! i've watched your ARTPOP video reaction like 1 month ago and since that I'm in love with your channel, i swearr. your content is so good to watch, your facial reactions are so funny, you're soooo charismatic and cute :( i'm still surprised that a channel that have a soooo good content isn't one of the most popular yt channels that talk about music. keep going girl!! ❤❤
i love artpop, i also think my heart could beat with bricks and strings. This is so poetic. The experimental strength of edm is fantastic, it really takes me to a rave.
So here’s the thing, “Dope” is a strong song because it was made of pure depression, you can feel through the production, you can feel through her voice. I was 14 when this album came out and life was good so I used to be like “wtf is this song doing in this album? It’s so depressing”. Now years later I understand every single word from that, and yep, it’s beautiful. Seductive yet destructive a beautiful song indeed.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but Lady Gaga actually debuted DOPE at her iTunes Festival performance and it was called "I Wanna Be With U" but changed it for her album. Similar songs just a small change in lyrics
Little information for the Album: Mary Jane Holland is about Marijuana but also about the time she was in Amsterdam out on a party in the nightlife and so nobody could recognize her she wore a brown wig and the commoners there called her Mary Jane Holland so she adapted the name and it kind of became an alter ego. And I couldn't believe that you didn't know the woman behind the Versace brand:Donatella Versace. That's who the Donatella song is inspired on.But also the image of a filthy rich snobby white lady who uses people to her gain. "Just ask your gay friends their advice.." I think imo that this line feeds into the straight girl with the gay best friend stereotype. Another one I wanted to mention is the intro in Aura is a sequel to the Telephone music video earlier in her career that Beyoncé then visualized with her music video for "Haunted" off of her self titled album. The evidence is there once you hear the "I killed my former"(the person she was running away with Beyoncé her partner in crime) "and left her on the trunk on highway 10" she left her on a highway that they were escaping on after poisoning everyone in a desert café in the music video. "If you find it send it straight to Hollywood" This could be a reach but I think this is a metaphor for prison because in the fame monster she witnesses the downfall of her fame and runs away from it (in real life this is comperable to the old movie actress leaving LA as her career disappears from the public view)picturing it as if escaping a prison so if LA is a Hotspot for famous people and Hollywood in the music video for Telephone is the prison that means they're sending Beyoncé to prison for being GaGa's partner in crime. "With a knife under the hood" could mean that this is a setup by GaGa to trick the police by giving them a fake lead but could also metaphorically mean that the knife is an artifact of a pop stars "impact" on the future generations thereby being cemented into fame once you enter and leave it.Being a pop culture icon and changing the meaning of fame but once you leave it feels like a betrayal to your fans a so called "backstabber" and in reality she stabbed Beyoncé in the back by killing her. Venus is about the painting "Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli and the song is an on the nose song about being a shining gem in the midst of fame.Fun fact GaGa also produced this mostly by herself and was so proud of it that she kept mentioning it in every interview or appearance that she could get :) The Song was supposed to have a music video but due to the bad rep that Artpop got it was scrapped and later implemented into the G.U.Y music video "An Artpop experience" that featured GaGa getting bathed in water in a floral dress signifying her rebirth whilst also being a metaphor for the painting by Botacelli.Btw watch the Video for the Artpop experience. It's full of what I like to call "Post Fame GaGa Lore" and very visually pleasing while also being chuck full of lore but explaining it would already be too much for this comment section haha Jewels and Drugs is about the influence on common people when they enter the world of fame and the newcomers not understanding the Hollywood scene about new money and flex culture "Dont want your jewels don't want your drugs, don't want your money want your love.) You already explained this but I think Do What You Want is that former newcomer finding her place in fame by putting her body on display as an object but keeping her sanity saying they'll never have her brain and manipulate her and never have her heart and poison it. Dope has a demo of the track called "I want to be with you" that is a much happier song compared to the released version.) I think GaGa probably didn't mean this but I think it's a play lots of fans of these glamorous celebrities want or are fans of the artists work when the artist is sad because when they're happy they're just "not relatable" anymore and get disposed of and shelved quicker than you can sign artpop (Applause reference) This is comparable to Lana Del Rey and the sad girl tumblr craze that was at its peak in circulation in 2014.However that was a bit of a different situation since the sad girl trend was usually viewed from a male gaze when this is about Fandom culture and toxic behavior within it. //Btw I highly encourage you to watch the artrave live version of dope the speech at the beginning is so moving and there is even a funny moment when in between GaGa singing the chorus a toad like voice screams "GaGa I love you!"// Gypsy is a love song to her fans that stayed loyal to her even after all the media craze and the hyperfixation and misinterpretation of her art. By GaGa saying she and this person (her fans) are on the run I also link this to her international references like the equality issues by making up a story of a queer couple wanting to get married near coast of Spain in Americano the French couture inspired runway sound of Donatella and Fashion and being in Italy for the "Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)" music video. The Monologue on Swedish in Paparazzi could also indicate that she was is in Sweden metaphorically but I think that plays more into the fame plot of her earlier career with the whole Diana reference in the death scene. Also Aura could be a new step into a transition in her career concept wise, career wise and sound wise. With the conceptual side of things she escaped the land of evil AKA Hollywood and tells the stories of her stay there like the sexual assault undertones in Swine GaGa stating that "writing that song felt like an excorcism to me" I think that's kind of ironic since story telling and poetry did come from oppressed minorities trying to get their voices heard by telling their stories of the trials and tribulations life sent their way for existing and being individual and strong. So as you may have heard this album was pretty dark and GaGa said in interviews in this era that it felt like an ejaculation because she has finally let go of the art she had been creating and showing it to the public. This was also supposed to be a visual Album like ex.Melanie Martinez's album "Cry Baby" every song being accompanied by a music video that are all tied in some way shape or form.In a tweet on the Artpop Act 2 movement from a year ago GaGa said that this was her lowest point in her career even though she predicted it (see: and Paparazzi 2009 MTV performance [connection with the fame plothole]) and that she made this album to hit harder than any of the drugs she was doing at the time so technically dope could be about a person, her fans and or her music.Saying that she could never give them or it up even with an addiction. There are also unreleased songs that were meant to be on artpop act 2 like "Tea" "Partynauseous" and two scrapped tracks featuring Azelea Banks one of them called "Red Flame".Gaga later stating that Azelea has a bad attitude. The follow up Album was then later scrapped because of the bad public reaction of Act 1 and never mentioned again however fans assume that GaGa created Chromatica in the image of the scrapped Artpop Act 2 (this theory being connected by Chromatica being her latest dance pop album since Artpop and the "enigma" phrase on "aura" later being a song title on the album) Sorry this was kind of an information dump to be honest I could still continue writing my theories and facts for hours but I'll stop here.I'm not the biggest GaGa fan nowadays but I'm still a huge fan of the sound and message of individuality that artpop sent that was so high in frequency people only understood it 7 years later (that's why the #JusticeForArtpop movement was created on Twitter).Have a nice day and remember your Artpop could mean anything.
@@BethThereseReacts and there's this one performance where she sang this song while wearing an apron, and there's a girl with her that lets her drink soy milk with food coloring and puked all over her on that whole performance. And the 2 even rode a mechanical bull with a keyboard where she pressed random keys using her foot on the outro while still gets puked on. The random keys playing represented the anxiety she got and the puke on her represented how it feels to be a victim of s3xual abuse. She then hanged her apron to a stand to let people see the trauma she carried all the way through. Many people were disgusted by the performance and that's basically the point. But I liked how sick it is. She's really one of the most creative artists in today's generation.
Its not something gaga would do. Girl u don't know miss gags she messed up a bunch of relationships 💀 her old bf Tyler from You & I was literally with someone when she took him
Not you using my comment at the beginning🥺💖 lol Been waiting for this reaction!! ARTPOP is my fave album by her 🙌🏻 just wish her plans for this album and era went the way it was supposed to! She was going through so much during this era, mostly due to her manager and a lot of her team leaving her like right at the start of the era. So a lot of the plans for this era never came to fruition or the way they were supposed to 😔 Gaga really fell into a depression during this time. I think you’ll really enjoy Joanne! 💖 Loving this journey of yours!
This is the best album! My favourite song are... all the f#*k¿ songs! Thanks for reacts to this masterpiece from our mother monster. Love u from Argentina 🇦🇷
Hey Beth I don't know if you heard but ARTPOP is turning ten next year and one of the producers named DJ White Shadow said next year They would release ARTPOP ACT II so I did know if you would react to it
if u already love the official version of Venus then u definitely need to listen to the unofficial extended mix of venus cuz that song will literally make u ascend all the way to venus
Oh, my goodness! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed listening and watching your reaction. My favourite track (in the whole wide world) is Venus. The whole album is my go-to whenever I want to celebrate or get into a better mood…. Or remind myself why I love LG so much! Thanks for creating and sharing ✨
