Greetings Charles and Uncle Tony! I have a few comments and stories I'd like to add, to help viewers of your masterful build, if you don't mind. I put the 2nd mainshaft clip sharp side down. It retains the 4th drive gear, and 3rd never rubs it. The 3rd gear dogs would bottom in the 5th gear holes before 3rd would rub that clip. When I build a trans, I like to have the ends of my clips coincide with a lateral spline on it's shaft. I also put them either 180 (for 2 clips) or 120 degrees (for 3 clips) apart. Balanced, as all things should be. Also, on a lot of 4 strokes, they use the trans shafts as part of the pressurized oiling system. I make damn sure the shaft holes line up with the gear bushing holes. The case reed Zabel 700s use those additional transfer area base studs, as do the 1973 and 1974 Yamaha SC500s, and probably others too. The machine I know best, the Suzuki LT500R, sure could have used them. They are known for blowing base gaskets there. I prefer that the cases come bare myself. I can see some very minor casting imperfections on the reed and transfer areas that I would grind smooth and clean before installing my bearings. It also makes it easier to grind the cases to match the base gasket, and the base gasket to the cylinder. I can attest to the pain in the ass Yamaha shift fork setup. They can be installed without that trick tool, but it sure ain't fun. I saw you put blue loctite on the bearing retainer fasteners, but I didn't see on the pizza cutter (I like that) bolt and shift pawl drum retainer bolts. I've seen them loosen with use without it on a buddy's CR250R. Extremely dangerous, jumped in and out of gears. Ring end gap is EXTREMELY important. Here's a story about what happens when it's too tight. This happened on an Arctic Cat laydown 800 H.O. with a 920 big bore kit. The builder didn't check the ring end gap, and the ring ends butted up against each other during hard, high throttle use. This caused a lot of heat in the piston, and it caused the ring locating pin area to soften, and the pin came out of the piston. The upper ring then rotated to the middle of the exhaust port. Through a combination of exhaust heat blowtorching through that gap and the ring ends catching the exhaust port, the engine seized HARD. This was a prime example of a great build. Extraordinary attention to detail. Most impressive. Whoever wins this will have a damn good rig. Thanks, and everybody keep on wrenchin'! Kyle T

This episode is right on the money! As you know Charles I'm working on my Yamaha IT's and my 79 I'm going to probably have to be splitting cases. Tony is so smooth at it so he's making me less afraid to dive in unchecked! Got my redwings long ago bro...lol. The 175 won't be as scary as the 500 but she's still gonna throw some roost! Trying to be confident. The attention to detail and the play by play on the motor is quite fascinating to watch, thank you Charles and Tony! As far as BRC well BRAGGING RIGHTS COMPLETE....straight up! The winner of this bike will have them. One last thing, did you know in 87 and 88 Yamaha built like 8 YZM500 liquid cooled works bikes? They even had aluminum frames! Killer bikes. mXrevival is by far the best bike channel on the interwebs...A Bloodsoaked Symphony-Whitechapel. Jam this one if you've never heard it🤘

At 57:50 u both got it wrong , on most JP makes vehicles the cross bolts are not Phillips or Pozidriv/Supadriv , they are actually JIS Bolts . Most JP vehicles that have been messed with, have ruined cross bolts in. Using the correct JIS driver, feel and grip difference ,is like night and day , u will never strip a bolt again. True JIS driver designation code is B4633 , can be hard to find because its supposed to be"obsolete" from 2008 and is now defined by same designation code as Phillips which is NOT at all the same. JIS drives are built to grip and give maximum torque with perfect fit. Bolts with dimple are always JIS but there are JIS bolts without it. Available in sizes +1 , +2 , +3. True Phillips driver designation code is DIN 5260-PH/ISO 8763-1 and are sometimes sold as JIS by scammers for reason said above .Phillips drives are made to STRIP the head of the bolt ,in order to avoid overtorque , that's their main design, this applies to all PZ/SD and JIS bolts.If a bolt is stuck u are Fcked with a driver like this , even if u use with a manual impact driver. Pozidriv/Supadriv drives are easily recognized through the second bumps in it and notches always in the bolts. Its not interchangeable with other drivers. Mostly used on wood screws. So True JIS is not only interchangeable with Phillips but the BEST choice for JIS AND Phillips screws , u will never look back.

I ended going down the rabbit hole you just explained. I have a couple Yamaha IT175 bikes and like the one I have had since I was a kid and am going through it this winter to resurrect it because it hasn't ran in 30+....I didn't know about this JIS deal when I was a kid and remember being pissed off about my screws back then. Now at 51, getting back into bikes and ended up learning WHY all my screws are stripped out! Lol. That's good stuff you posted up here. I could be wrong but I think a lot of enthusiasts don't know about the "Japanese Industrial Standard" on Japanese bikes. Thanks for putting that up. Maybe you helped out one of our fellow riders. Happy holidays!

I didn't know those new BRC 500 kits ran the one needle style crank bearing on the one side like KTM does KTM uses them that's pretty cool makes for splitting cases a lot easier sometimes you don't need a crankcase splitter with that style bearing little persuasion with a rubber mallet you can pop them cases open sometimes as for the other case have you might still need the crank puller not always though that's pretty cool whoever wins this bike is going to be one happy camper

How does a yz250 2t gearbox handle double the torque? They were never great to start with. False neutrals after 12months etc
@mxrevival
@mxrevival 11 месяцев назад
No problem so far! I’ve had issues with Suzuki transmissions, but never Yamaha. I’ve heard some guys complain about their gear. But never experienced it myself. Only the shift selector bearing coming apart on the 250, sending ball bearing through the transmiss 🙃

Why did he heat up the water pump shaft? Wouldn’t that expand the shaft? I would have thought he would have put the heat to the gear expanding the gear allowing the shaft to press out easier.
@michaelwendler5589
@michaelwendler5589 Год назад
I was getting ready to post the same thing. He should of heated the gear to expand it and not the shaft.
@mxrevival
@mxrevival Год назад
I believe that when you have a steel on steel application like that, heat in general is going to help things "loosen up" and come apart regardless. Like sore muscles in a hot tub - maybe a lame example... There's really no option in this case to heat one or the other without direct heat transfer- unlike an engine case, for example, where you could expand the aluminum case exclusively around a steel bearing race... especially due to being two completely types of metal where one of which expands rapidly while the other doesn't.
