Don't be that guy at the boat ramp, make sure your outboard is running good before you put it in the water. Knetter's Patreon Page - patreon.com/us... Deer Camp - • Deer Camp Deer Processing - • Deer Processing #uppermichigan
Nah. Wait until 4th of July when it's peak busy then bring the boat out for the 1st time with your whole family standing around on the dock. That's always a classic
Lol. Everyone waiting and you're to the point of cussing it. If mine doesn't start in the first 5or 6 crank intervals, I get heated. Then become the spectacle of the boat ramp. Lol.
Put the lower unit in a 30 -50 gallon plastic barrel, fill with water. Run engine. THIS will tell you if the water pump is working. Garden hose just pushes water through the engine.
Or you just pull your lower unit every two years and slap a new impeller on the shaft. Whether it needs it or not. It's a 12 dollar part and 30 minutes of work
Get a barrel plastic 55 gallon and cut it put a drain 3/4 in the bottom I use a hose cut barrel to hieght ensure water level over the intake fill and start. never throttle up pass 2500 rpm idle check for peeing Could be dirt dobbers in up the hose I sue a coat hanger to. Lean out
@@kencleg7721also I've noticed with the Dobbers, if you just start it in the barrel a few times over a few days it usually will loosen and soften up the dirt. In salt water it will even cut thru that dirt even faster. Last time I was clogged about half way but took a few hrs in the water to unplug it all the way. Gotta run those motors !!!!
There nothing worse than having problems at the launch for the first time of the year! My most common one is forgetting to put the drain plug in, which since Wisconsin made it a law to remove it after each time on the water ive forgotten to put it back in 3 times!
I’ve been there once myself. Fortunately, my buddies son noticed almost immediately, and we only got a couple gallons in the boat! That is definitely a pain in the neck having to remove the drain plug every time in Wisconsin.
I went to an outboard engine school in the military. It was a pretty good school on everything dealing with outboards. Made a lot of money in San Diego after work and especially on the weekends.
i always start everything before i put it in, wether it’s been a week or not, i don’t wanna get down in the ramp, not start and look like a jack ass. never had problems out of water either, jet skis, boats anything 🤷
Best thing I ever did for my 60 yamaha was to start running nothing but synthetic oil and non-ethanol gas through it. I also installed a fuel-water separator filter. Those things really fixed my continued carb issues and hard to start issues I used to have with it.
@@mikesolns1364 because it is on a boat primarily used for hunting, it is not uncommon for it to sit and not run for a several months in the late spring and summer up until mid fall. I was having to remove and tear apart the carbs and clear out gumming and varnish in the bowl and in the orifi and needles. No problems after synthetic oil, fuel water separator and non-ethanol fuel. It has been sitting for about two months now. I am confident I could go put it in the water now after a battery charge and it would start pretty quickly (for a two-stroke).
I think this is hilarious. I know there are hoards of people who don't, but what type of boater would do that to themselves. Hilarious, simply hilarious 😂😂 Edit, oh and do that to others,,,, at the boat ramp.
DUCK HUNTERS!!!!!! The boat ramp is not the place to play with grandpas old ‘75 Johnson, crank it before you ever hook up to the truck! Boat ramps or mud ramps most the time where we put in the river to duck hunt when it’s 10* and 4am is not the place to “try new stuff” or old worn out 💩
People think you can check to see if the water pump is working with muffs. You cant. The garden hose will push water through a smoked waterpump impeller and simulate a working water pump. Water test or barrel test is the right way. You want to see the motor suck up the water on its own. Water forced through means nothing!
Your not wrong. But the muffs aren't a bad check either. It will tell you if the passage is plugged up. And if you watch the strength of the flow coming out of the engine you can usually tell if the force is being enhanced by the water pump or not. But you're right a slopped out water pump will still allow water to get through but it will usually look different. It's just so quick and easy with the muffs. If you hook up the muffs and turn the water on and you get flow through the motor before you start it, that can signal trouble also. Like I said it's an easy quick check that covers some of the bases.
Aint that the truth. Especially Yamaha. They are tough to start cold. My 2004 40hp two stroke cranks 10-15 intervals before it starts if it's been few weeks. Runs great all day. Junk start injection. Just needs a proper choke.
You want to see something shocking. If you still have an older stroke lower the leg amd prop into a large clean garbage container.. fill it with water then start the engine and let it run for 10 min or so. Stop engine then let it sit for awhile.. bout the time jt takes to have a beer.. Then take a look at the water.. 2 strokes are notorious for spewing oil and unburned gas. You'll see it on the water.. When I did that with my older 40 horse I was shocked.. water had oil and gas sheen all over it. got rid of it that season. It was filthy.
Here on Cape Cod, we call them “Rabbit Ears”!! Our neighbors don’t love them, LOL but great way to burn off a few minutes of fog oil before putting in the water.
Just had to pull a guy across the lake last night his lil gas motor wouldn't run right if he would have read the signs that say electric motor only I wouldn't have had to deal with his problems 😅
100%. Luckily I live on the southern coast and don't have a "first time for the season" lol. I've always started my motor before I do any prep work for a trip because if it's not running, you waste all of your time with everything else. I'm on the water approximately 50-75 times a year and usually at least every other outing, there's a sad fella at the ramp retrieving his boat due to battery, fuse or other motor issues that could've easily been discovered while at home and avoided wasting all that time and energy.
Everyone in the comments making excuses on why not to scare me. Something like this might be why my uncles Nissan Marine 115 has lasted almost 20 years with minimal issues. It’s cycled through before going to the water and the salt is cleaned out this same way after every outing.
Boat ramp is 3 minutes away from my house so I just head there, dump the boat in the water, and cuss as I get it started for the 1st time. Only had to go home once with an engine that refused to start.
When testing an outboard allways run it in a bin of water that way you will know if your water pump impeller is working, if you use muffs the hose pressure will give a false indication that cooling water is flowing. Also what the hell is is that Naps guy on about?
DO NOT give the motor any throttle with muffs on. You can experience runaway engine without a load on the propeller. The motor can exceed max rpm by several thousand, even pulling the ignition plugs off won't stop it, only pulling the fuel line off will stop it (and then what damage have you done)
@@mrdanger4851 They meant it will cut the hose when you put the engine into gear wise guy. Muffs can be installed from the front of the motor, works just fine. Stop trying to correct people that have no issues with doing things the way they do it.
@@howard1484 Not being a "wise guy"! Have you lined it up and tried it? Bet not because you will have to admit to yourself im correct. Go ahead and try it then you will be questioning what else you been doing. Wrong your entire life!
@@mrdanger4851we're both right and wrong. I didn't pay attention that the muffs in the video have the hose on the side. The muffs I own have the hose directly down the middle, allowing water pressure on both sides of the muffs, and will interfere with the propeller, which will not work going from the propeller side. The muffs he use may be able to go in from the propeller side, HOWEVER, it will not always work going in through the propeller side because the metal bar may interfere with the propeller depending on the size of the lower unit and the brand. It's best just to do whichever way works better for the person using it and for the engine itself.
