Starting a Lehr Propane Outboard After 4 Years

Starting a Lehr 5 horsepower outboard for the first time in roughly four years. This is my first experience with a propane outboard and overall I like what I see. No carburetor issues and a very small, lightweight engine. Quality might not be the best but certainly good enough.

That’s why I have a dual fuel generator and run it off of propane. No carb issues.

I agree, it is a big plus for outboards since everyone here is always using regular ethanol gas and ruining carbs. Oil stays nice and clean too!

Thanks for the video! I have a 5 and a 2.5 lehr, both have been sitting about 3 years. Gonna dig them out and see what happens

Good run off propane. Just gas zylinders need. Inside engine keep good with propane, no carbon like petrol.. Greeting from Russia (Cherkasy).. ❤️

@@FixAndForget Agree with clean propane. We sell CCCP warbird, turbine helicopter, tracked and turret vehicle. Personell karrier we take and put together V8 16litre. run propane 35 years. Only have new valves engine like new, pistons even new like. Gas turbine unit for electric generation, very low emmision too. Propane fuel good. Greeting to you friend.. 👍

Nice! I just started mine after 4 yrs and got a big puff of smoke. is that typical after a long time sitting?

Yes after 4 years sitting I wouldn't be worried about it. Just keep an eye on the oil level and check for gas leaks and cooling water discharge. Good luck & thanks for watching!

Any tips on this motor? Im new to outboards and picking up this exact motor used in a couple days

Thanks for watching! Change the oil at the prescribed interval, make sure the water pump is functioning, periodically check / Change the lower unit oil. Don't let the engine overheat!

@@FixAndForget this may seem like a dumb question, but how would you know if an outboard with no temp sensor is overheating?

If the water pump is working then the engine will most likely not overheat. Once you witness one overheat you'll be able to tell from experience what it's like, a distinct sound and smell usually accompanies it. Cheers!

Hi, people talk a lot about how bad these motors are,A lot of flak , are they really any good ? And where would someone bring it to be worked on ? Thanks .

Thanks for watching! I really can't speak for their reliability but this one survived sitting for 4 years which is generally pretty hard on engines. The diaphragm and regulator still worked fine which would probably not be the case with a gas engine. I will say that the quality probably isn't the best given where it's made (china) any reputable outboard motor shop would likely be able to repair one. Good luck.
