There are loads of different ways to start and finish off when you're cross stitching - here are a few of them, and thoughts on how I use them.
Start One: ‘Catch the Tail’ 1:30
Finish One: Weaving In 3:09
Start Two: Loop Method 3:49
Start Three: Weaving In 5:06
Finish Two: Trailing Tail 5:45 and 7:48
Start Four: Pin Stitch 6:12
Finish Three: Pin Stitch 8:17
Start Five: Waste Tail 9:18
Isolate Pin Stitch 10:21

Finally I get the loop stitch! You’re the first person who has explained that you start with one strand and thread both ends through needle to make a loop! I’m a very visual learner, so your video was perfect! Also the diagram of the cross stitch, and where you put your needle for the pin stitch. Brilliant, Thanks so much!

Thank you for putting that little diagram of the pin stitch! I kept watching videos of people doing it, but it just looked like they were moving the needle up and down in the same place over and over. This was very helpful!

This video is a favorite of mine. I've learned a lot from your descriptions. I specifically came here to find out how to do one single stitch starting and ending with a pin stitch. I wasn't sure how to exactly do the second pin stitch but thanks to you, I've got it. Thank you!

As a newbie to cross-stitch, this was really helpful! I've only been using the catch-the-tail method to start and the weaving method to end a section, but these aren't always the best methods to use in some cases. I'll give these other methods a try!

Thank you so much for this video! I've been doing basic cross stitch pieces for a while now but had only been taught the weave method of starting and stopping. I didn't even know other methods existed. So glad I can learn new skills and make my stitching life easier and your explanations are so clear and easy that you've really helped :)

Thank you so much for this video :D I started cross stitching last march and I didn't really watch any tutorial on how to do it properly and I just started cross stitching on my own, and just made my own start and end. And I just realized I wasted so much thread :') and the size I'm doing it is like 16x16 inches. But I'm glad I found this video so I know how to properly stitch and thread :)

I am just learning counted cross stitching. I just finished my first, literally a "My First Cross Stitch" pattern by Buscilla and I wish I'd know how to pin stitch! It was a mermaid and had a couple of one cross stich accents around the mermaid that I was wondering how to start and stop. Of course I just stretched over there and back from the nearest grouping, and you can definitely see a bit of the thread color coming through on the front. Glad to know there is a better option when I move on to more important works!

Thank you so much for this video! I am a newbie to cross-stitching. I giggled when you said, "It's a bit of a mess" for the back of your work, because I currently have looooong stands of floss spanning from one area to the other, long tails and horrid weaving techniques. I'm really quite embarrassed by it after watching this. I am learning though. LOL I honestly didn't think I could cut the floss right next to the fabric. I will work on this. LOL
@CorrieBerryCLB

This was awesome! I had no idea how to work those individual stitches without leaving ugly bumps from knots. I have been trying to find someone that shows how to prepare the fabric and floss for a project. The pattern I bought doesnt mention how many threads to use, is it always 2 in that case?
@CorrieBerryCLB
@CorrieBerryCLB 6 лет назад
I'm so sorry I never responded to this - I always assume it's two if it doesn't specify but you can change it if you don't like the way it's looking, it's entirely up to you!

I really appreciate this video!!! It is really helping me when it comes to quick starting and finishing and not getting stuck with a tail all the time! I am wondering though if you have a method to keep the thread/floss in the needle. I have found one method but was wondering what you might do for that considering you seem to make some large and awesome pieces! ? Thank you and thank you for this Awesome video!!
@CorrieBerryCLB
@CorrieBerryCLB 5 лет назад
meg_6689 I was thinking about this when I was stitching this morning and I think I just hold the needle quite close to the eye and don’t let the end get too close to it! I would say it’s mostly just practice - leave quite a long tail and don’t be too precious about using up every spare mm of thread, life is too short to keep threading your needle.
@meg_6689
@meg_6689 5 лет назад
Haha okay. Yea I had simply started with a kit, and as I got a little further along I realize they really do provide you with much more thread than you need so I have definitely been keeping the tail longer. I was pulling the thread out so often I was driving myself crazy!!! Thank you so much for replying and this video is Extremely helpful!

@CorrieBerryCLB
@CorrieBerryCLB 7 лет назад
Jennifer Naulls either the pin stitch or I weave it in three times! Once towards where I want the stitch to start, then back skipping the first stitch so I don't just pull it straight out, then for the third time the same direction and good to go! Does that make sense?

Yes I like to cross stitch. Should your pattern be stitch one row at a time from lest to right or can you sitch a group of same color? Let's say 3 rows, red, 5 stitches on top, 10 stitches in middle and 7 stitches on third row before moving on to next group of color.

Can you please clarify for me that if the pattern calls for 2 threads and you are using the loop method to start your stitch do you use 2 threads essentially making it 4 going through on each stitch or do you just use one thread as it's doubled? Also do you have any videos on a quick method for threading on a needle?
@jylmilner8612
@jylmilner8612 4 года назад
Hi, Kara-lee - you would want to use one thread doubled in order to stitch with "2" threads. It's not my video, but I thought maybe I could help you out.
@hipgirl25
@hipgirl25 6 лет назад
How do you make sure in the loop stitch that you don't accidentally pull the thread out of the needle? And wouldn't the weaving in finish pull out eventually?
@CorrieBerryCLB
@CorrieBerryCLB 6 лет назад
I just hold it with quite a long length at the loose end to try avoid this, it does happen a bit but you get used to it. With weaving in, if you're just leaving the cross stitch flat once you've stopped handling it and it sits still for years I can't see why it would come out. If you're going to be moving the piece around a lot you might want to be a bit more secure about it, but if you've ever tried to unstitch something you've woven in you'll realise it's a really secure method of fastening!
