Seriously wish I could send this man the money I paid towards my statistics class this semester. I learn more from watching him than I ever have at my university. Not only did his lectures help me test into statistics in the first place (skipping so many math courses, saving me so much time and money) but now they are helping me ace the class. I got a 98 on my last test and the average was a 66!! Thank you Professor Leonard, you have no idea how much you have helped me.

I'm a Psychology Major and I am useless when it comes to math. I took this course once before, 5 years ago, on line and the teacher was horrible, if I asked a question they would say... " read page..." I begged and pleaded for help to no avail and failed the course. This defeat devastated me, and I gave up on school. I just decided to go back and finish my BA, only to be faced with the same situation, only this time the teacher says... "Watch this clip". Out of frustration I utilized my detective skills and found you! Thank you! I don't believe this is a course you can learn just from reading. One actually needs class instruction. You are wonderful and you saved my bacon. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Signed 48 year old Gramma that is trying again.

I am a psych major as well, first time i took stats I got a D....graduated, now want honours and look forward...so now 35 years old 15 years later, trying to take that D to an A... so far i'm on par.... but geeeez a lot of hard work

Don't you still need statistics in order to do research? I just finished a biochemistry lab report using Chi-squared testing. Like its biology, but I still used math

If ur professor can't explain it in layman's terms, it only means one thing, he or she doesn't quite understand the topic themselves.

I'm sure they've likely heard the horror stories about other professors. My professor isn't as good as professor Leonard, but he's a lot better than some of the professors that I've heard stories about... Like my bestie's math professor... She's always talking about how he's taught 2 chapters worth of math in 3 months and rambles on throughout every lecture about how they're "so far behind" where they should be that he doesn't have much time left in class to catch up. Then, he bounces around the book, from 3.1 to 8.5 to 4.6... And I know she isn't lying, because I've heard several other people in her class say these same things..

I have a huge test tomorrow and literally watched all videos from chap 7 to here, and holy shit i'm amazed at how much I understand now. My professor is horrible, just shows a slide show and never actually does any problems. Then when we ask questions he treats us like we are stupid and say well what's not to get, then he just repeats the slide quicker then the first time. Thank you so incredibly much for these videos! You are an amazing professor!

One topic he doesn't cover in his videos on hypothesis testing is the concept of a Type 1 and a Type 2 error. A *Type 1 Error* is when you accidentally reject the null hypothesis when it is actually true. A *Type 2 Error* is when you accidentally accept (fail to reject) the null hypothesis when it is actually false. The probability of committing a TYPE 1 ERROR is *alpha* -- the level of significance used in the test. The probability of committing a TYPE 2 ERROR is *beta* -- which cannot be directly calculated.

Professor Leonard - Thank you so very much for these lessons. I am currently taking Statistics "online" based on probably an updated version of the book you are using in your class, and having a very hard time due to not having personal instruction - I get a lot out of class/face time and am learning online classes don't really work for me. You are SAVING me in this class. Not only do you make Statistics 100% understandable, you make it interesting and enjoyable. I have more than once laughed out loud at something you said to your class! I am an adult learner going back to school for a second degree. I only wish you taught in the Rochester, NY area - I would sign up for your classes every time. It shows that you really care about your students actually learning what you are teaching them, and that is very much appreciated. Thank you so much for posting these videos online so that students outside of those in your classes can benefit from them as well. I wish I could designate 50% of my tuition to you as I am learning from you and not my actual professor! Take care and many thanks! - Amber

@professorravik8188
@professorravik8188 3 года назад
Very good question. You should make these statements carefully based on what you want to prove and on your intuition. If you want to test a drug for example, you will have H0: p_drug=0.5 and H1: p_drug>0.5, where p_drug is the proportion of people cured by the drug. It's very unlikely the control group (people who took the placebo) have a significant better outcome than ones who took the drug. So you don't care about p_drug signs, then state the H1 as "p different than..."

Great lectures as always! There's just one thing I would like clarification on: why is the null hypothesis changed to equality? It seems to me that we'd be more strictly vetting the claim if all parts thereof were tested. To change the null hypothesis to equality rather than an inequality seems like you're giving the claimant a backdoor to say that if their claim was refuted, we insufficiently tested their claim. I haven't found a good article about this anywhere.

1:07:10 The analogy between statistical hypothesis testing and criminal litigation is useful conceptually. What is missing from Professor Leonard's explanation are the burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt, and the presumption of innocence. He seems to be hinting at H0 as the presumption of innocence, the defendant's position, and Ha as the burden of proof, what the prosecution has to meet to demonstrate his satisfaction of the burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt; not proof beyond ALL doubt, but only proof beyond REASONABLE doubt. He refers to proving the null hypotheses, but that seems to be a misconcept, just as the defendant's proving his innocence is a misconcept. The defendant's innocence is the initial presumption for the judge, jury, police, prosecution and defendant. The null hypothesis is the initial presumption for the scientist. The scientist investigates whether the null hypothesis is acceptable. The police investigate whether the presumption of innocence is acceptable. Presenting evidence the null hypothesis is unacceptable is the scientist's job. Presenting evidence that police found that the presumption of innocence is unacceptable is the prosecutor's job. The jury considers the evidence presented and makes a decision, based on plausible reasoning, whether the prosecutor has satisfied its burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt. The scientist considers his evidence and applies plausible reasoning to decide whether he's met his burden of proof that the null hypothesis is acceptable or not.
