Just because it is cold, doesn't mean you can't be warm and still maintain the functionality and efficiency required for cycling. In this video I discuss how I layer with tech fabrics that are both stylish and aero.

Luis I’m from SOFLO so I know it gets cold there….now I live in Seattle. Our winters are cold and wet so I definitely layer up. I wear fleece lined long bibs with calf high wool dress socks and ROS shoe covers. Cool days a base layer short sleeve smart wool cold days in the 30s long sleeve smart wool. Then a winter long sleeve jersey, with a Castelli Rosso Corsa Jacket and don’t forget a neck gator and ROS castelli gloves.

Hi Luis. Great video as usual. Here in western NY this is certainly an issue we deal with. BTW I checked out the MYN web site and it looks like you have a side gig as a cycling kit model.:)

I feel attacked when someone says we don't know what it's like to ride in the cold. I've been on a few rides in south florida with the temperatures in the 40s. Long bibs and fitted insulated long sleve jerseys are a must. Great topic!

Love the chanel Luis, viewing from the Mid-Atlantic, US where it’s another level of cold than Florida and the latex (or nitril) gloves liner tip is on point! Adds 10 degrees of warmth to any other gloves. Other cold weather pointers I would offer… Jackets and vests with two way zippers are also game changers, making it much easier to moderate body temperature on climbs/decents and access pockets with heavier gloves on. Taping the vents closed on the front of your helmet and wearing a neck gator that you can easily pull up over your mouth helps protect your bronchial passages from breathing in the cold air. Hand warmers in gloves and toe warmers worn between your shoes and shoe covers are also clutch in freezing temperatures. Cheers!

Great advice Luis. I live in Milano, Italy where the weather can be very cold (below zero), and foggy during winter. Tried your formula today and was really surprised how well it worked. `i found my 100% wind resistant lightweight jacket (Santini) and rode today using the layers you suggest, and it works real good! No more bulky Goretex jackets for me!! BTW love your Bianchi rim brake road bike, its amazing. I ride a 2002 (yes 2002) Klein Quantum Pro Q carbon rim brake bike, and its fast!

For cold weather cycling, I often wear cross country ski clothing. Louis Garneau is the local brand here in Quebec and we can order cycling stuff and XC ski stuff in the same order (and it is often marketed as dual purpose). I wear padded liner shorts (the ones from gravel shorts), sometimes paired with leg warmers and XC ski pants over top if it is below 7C. I also wear shoe covers and XC ski gloves. I place a sheet of ethafoam (the packing material used to wrap computer screens and other electronics) under the MIPS liner in my helmet in order to block the wind coming in from the front, and wear a helmet liner with ear covers. For the top, it is pretty much the same as you, but around 5C I might wear a soft shell jacket instead. At temps below 10C, the air pocket around you from looser fitting clothing will greatly improve warmth and reduce condensate formation -- hence the tradeoff between being aero and being warm. A nice loose fitting gilet to accomodate extra clothing and create an air pocket, I wear is by a British brand called TORM.

Nice details! I never thought about using bib liners that way. Thanks for sharing👍🏾

The great thing about XC clothing is that it has a wind block in the front, while being breathable in the back.

Today spring ride in Stockholm, 2c real feel -2c, dropped to 0c around the islands. Two layers, jersey+jacket (waterproof and windproof). I will so happy at the temp in Florida.

I ride most of the winter in Massachusetts and have three different bib tights for various temp ranges and precipitation. Two jackets and several base layer options to fine tune the outer layer. The kit is so good these days I wear fewer layers than ever right down to teens and single digits. Rarely do I have on more than a base layer under the jacket. The DeFeet wool socks are key in combination with their Slipstreams(shoe cover) or the Gore C3 shoe covers. Gore C3 is my coldest weather kit and does not disappoint. The sizing runs large though so its tricky to buy without trying on. I really liked the kit you showed us here. For my location that would work quite nicely in the autumn.

Up here in Idaho, there is a good number of people who switch to fat tire biking given the snow and ice conditions for almost half the year. I have a gravel cyclocross bike so I usually divert to my indoor trainer when the conditions deteriorate for it to be ridden safely. I haven't gotten into fat tire biking yet but frankly I have enough hobbies at this point that I need to watch my spending!😅

Great tips & thanks for sharing. Here in northeast Ohio, we get pretty cold and weather in winter. I tend to do slower rides & dress in layers (using sweat pants with under layer of cycling bibs & jersey), I still have a lot of fun and not trying to break any records lol.
