For anyone having trouble with the formatting error message, I just solved mine (Samsung 256GB MircoSD). I put the MSD into my Windows 10 PC and formatted it with the exFAT option. Put it back into the Steam Deck when it was shut down, turned it on, followed the above video and it works absolutely fine. Just a little tip.

@@erik9358 Yes. After doing the above formatting in Windows, put the MSD into the Steam Deck whilst it's off, turn it on then navigate the options menu to storage where there'll be the option on the right to format the MSD. The Steam Deck should successfully format the MSD this time.

Your 62 gb never left :). There is often a confusion between gb and gib. Also known as gibibytes. These cards translate to gib which is why you might often notice a lesset value. Have no fear its exactly as intended! This tends to confuse people and there aren't many explanations so just thought I would share!

Thats true but the interesting thing is theres still some missing storage. My 512 GB card should be at least 476 GiB, but on the steam deck it says it only has 468.2

2:51 It's because there are two different ways to calculate storage space: decimal bytes and binary bytes. Marketing (and macs) I believe uses decimal bytes while Windows uses decimal bytes. So, 1 KB = 1,024 bytes on Windows.

That's not what takes 62.5 GB of space in a 1TB drive. The actual FORMAT is what takes up all that space. There has to be a structure to place your files in. Consider an empty warehouse. You can't really use all the space to put your equipment. You need space for shelves and you can't really stack everything to the ceiling or wall to wall or you would have no space to actually access stuff when you need to. This is a similar principle with all drives. It is truly 1TB raw size, but you can never use all of that space.

1 megabyte is 1024×1024=1048576 bytes. But manufacterers calculatie a megabyte as 1000x1000=1000000 bytes. Also fat is on there, or the ext4 equivalent, wich also takes space, and there are your 60ish gigs.

Piggy backing off of this is the difference between a Gigabyte and a Gibibyte. A gibibyte is the presentation of the same number but in base 2, where as gigabyte is base 10 (i.e. 1 gibibyte = 1024 mibibytes, 1 gigabytes = 1000 megabytes). SD Card (and hard drive) manufactures put the number of gigabytes on the box because it's a larger number, where as operating system software analyzes the amount of gibibytes are on something because it's a more meaningful and realistic number that makes sense to the computer.

SD cards and USB devices do actually store drivers for all the possible OSes you might use them on which takes up some space.

Thanks mate, glad this is pretty straight forward, but you're right, it seems obvious that it would be better if they'd prompt you. I wanted to watch this because formatting and whatever isn't always a good thing so while I spotted the option, I didn't know if that's what I needed to do. That's another thing I think, they should do like they do with PlayStation extended storage where they tell you it needs to be formatted to hold data on that system.

Thanks! Just got an EVO 512GB card and mistakenly dropped it on the floor while watching the video and spent 10 minutes searching for it. Luckily, I found it, installed it -- following your instructions, because there didn't appear to be any that came with the Steam Deck to explain how to install them -- and got it formatted. Had no idea about the formatting process, so your video helped a ton.

@@TheACTIONZ You buy the SD card, plop it into your Steamdeck, and then open up the Steam menu and go into the options and scroll down to the "Format SD Card" option. Once you click on that, the Steamdeck will format the SD card, and from then you can use it however you see fit. The 64, 256, and 512 memory modules that come standard in the Steamdeck don't have to be removed since they're installed internally in the unit. So you don't have to worry about that.

How do you safely eject SD card? Can I just take it out when powered off or should I be going into desktop mode and doing the safe eject through there? And I feel you on the memory space thing. Just got a 2TB m.2 and only had like 1.8 after formatting.

The SD card space not being as advertised is due to storage drive capacity being calculated and reported slightly differently than other capacities in computing. This means that when you install a 480,000,000,000 bytes storage drive into a computer, that computer converts the number of bytes into gigabytes by dividing by 1024 all the way up through the scale, not by dividing by 1,000. Doing the math, this is what we end up with: 480,000,000,000 Bytes / 1,024 = 468,750,000 actual Kilobytes 468,750,000 KB / 1,024 = 457,764 actual Megabytes 457,764 MB / 1,024 = 447 actual Gigabyte

for the ones getting errors when trying to format your sd card. this is what worked for me: click the steam button and go to settings. then enable developer mode. scroll down on the list on the left and on the bottom it should have some developer settings. when you click that it should give you an option to force format your sd card. this worked for my sd card. it first kept showing as a 3 gb card instead of the 128 gb card. but after the force format it shows the normal size

maybe on smaller cards, I have a 1tb sandisk ultra and it doesn't let you still. It says format error. We encounter van error while formatting your microsd card, please try again or contact steam support

The reason when using storage and it doesn't match up to what you have i.e. you have a 1tb ssd and it only give you 912gb is because of the way operating systems report storage to the user. They use a different method and essentially the storage gets lost in the conversion of bytes to bits. There are a few videos on youtube that can explain it better.

My 1tb took about 2 mins to format. NOTE: the reason why storage is not showing up as 1tb is because the space is being taken up by a File Allocation Table which is like the table of contents for all the space on the memory card. Formatting actual my builds up this table of contents. Without it, the computer does not know how to search the contents of the card (nor even navigate it for that matter). So, the card is 1tb as they are not lying but the FAT in your exFAT 4 formatted card uses up that space hence why the system does not report it as 1tb. Back in the day, floppies were advertised as 2MB but you only ended up with 1.4MB was for this reason. The table needed that room for it to work. All digital storage media uses some kind of table to register and keep track of the data stored within itself.

Having less space after formatting is due to the format taking up a little bit of space for efi/file system and to reserve space, if you used the whole drive or close to it you would not be able to remove data or reformat the drive again
