Fond memories of being a young lad and going up to Blackgates with my now late father Dave Wilson, this engine was always one of my favourites to sneak a ride behind. Thanks for sharing.

My late grandfather bert perry was a member here & at brighouse. I know in the 1970s him & some others tried to set a world record for continued running. Got a photograph of them all together.

Every time I see an engine going at great speed I am reminded of my mogul picking a switch point and derailing. I stopped it from going on it's side. Your former black five is beautiful, so happy to see it. The clean up after the running is part if the fun to me.

You talk so positively about Bahco spanners that I just had to see what they are about. Someone had to drive them over so it took a while to get here but there are now at least 3 Bahco spanners in Texas. They are very well made. While not as enjpyable as I imagine it would be to watch a buxom woman in a small bikini use the spanners I do enjoy using them.

That really is a BEAUTIFUL locomotive! I'm on the other side of the pond but love all types of steam locos, and seems the UK steamers were built more for speed and look great doing so!

“First you must find... another shrubbery! Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. Is what came to mind when you said that! had a personal laugh then off to find the DVD!

I inherited a Bahco adjustable from my grandfather, no idea how old it is, but could easily be 50 years. Just as good as it was new. Its outlasted numerous others I have owned. It still looks better and works better than anything else.

G'day Keith the black 5 is my favourite locomotive and I was lucky to see one in the UK last time we were over. That would have been a very difficult thing to do to sell her. Interesting how you figured out about the steam oil, now I know why you are very adamant about the oil you use on your engines. What a beautiful locomotive and it's good to see that it is still used, thank you Keith for letting us into a little bit of your past. Regards John

Keith if you got a hobby like this there is one thing you should keep in mind : Dont merry and stay single. you can buy all the goodies you like without sleeping in the doghouse. Been there done it .. i flown big scale RC model airplanes . But as Dennis Bloodnock already suggested : i would have sold the wife for something very useful for the hobby. Saves yall a lot of nights in the doghouse and worry's on excuses to come up with for why for gods sake you bought that super duper expensive engine or tool or in my case an other motorcycle or model airplane. Cheers mate.

It is still owned by the person that I sold it to, an it is stored at the Club I used to be a member of. The current owner fitted nameplates on it and painted the boiler banding.

Is that a 'Vanderbuilt' style boiler?
@keithappleton
@keithappleton 7 лет назад
? no idea ....
@kaibroeking9968
@kaibroeking9968 7 лет назад
Hello Mike, I don't think it is: As far as I could find out, locomotive boilers with a fire-tube instead of a firebox, are sometimes referred to as "Vanderbilt" types. They are quite rare on full size engines as the tubes limits the grate size much much more than a fire box does. Also, the surface of a fire box is larger than that of fire tube, further limting the power of the boiler. This construction was an economy measure to dispense with the stay bolts around the firebox. These boilers often have a conical outer shell connecting two different barrel diameters - a large one around the fire tube to allow for a larger fire tube with a big grating, and a smaller one where the smoke tubes are. On the Black Fives, the boiler is also conical, but it has a rather large, normal firebox, so by these standards, this would not be a Vanderbilt boiler. Sorry Keith, I had to do it. Next time, I'll just take one of my yellow pills and sit in a corner untill the urge for lengthy explanations goes away.
