To me, steampunk is combining the beauty of the past with the functionality of the present. I know that's not the proper definition, just my take on it.

I was born like this.I didnt even know it had a name.My family always found it entrtaining.Me in my goggles,tinkering with things.I turned out to be a visual artist,but an illustrator.But I always dressed like this.So odd,right?

1:20 what a wonderful explanation of what Steampunk is. I like poeple that can explain their hobbies without speaking completely in jargon and being snooty, not even tongue-in-cheek.

If stuff looked like that today I think it would be a good thing. I swear more people would grow up being very artistic and there would be a ton more inventors out there.

Starting work on my outfit for the steampunk festival in September here in Nor Cal, I absolutely love the style of the art and the fashion, the working machines are amazing. Last year I saw a motocycle that ran off steam.

Doc Brown's time-machine train in the 'Back to the Future III'; the car, submarine, and other machines in the 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'; Dracula's vampire supercharging machine (to which Frankenstein's monster was strapped) in 'Van Helsing', and all of the fashion in these 3 movies, are examples of steampunk. You'll see plenty of steampunk in the video game 'Bioshock Infinite', where just about all of the action takes place in a floating city in a slightly-alternate 1912.

Steampunk is fascinating.. Though I never had the courage to actually visit a convention or something, I love how it looks like. I don't even know why, honestly, but whenever I see gears, ancient clocks, goggles and victorian clothing, it somehow fascinates me.. how strange.

I saw the exhibition yesterday and it was really interesting. I loved the fact that everything was actually functional, as well as looking great. My favourite piece was probably the computer keyboard. It looked so cool, I want one! Also, the red leather mask at 2:10 looks just like the Pyro wearing the Brigade Helm hat from Team Fortress 2. xD

@Deathrune456 no need for boilers and steam, all the mechanical parts can work with compressed air, all you need is a high pressure air tank. small ones are used for paint-ball markers now, and some bigger ones have been used to power cars.

Steam is merely the working fluid, not the energy source. It still requires an energy source. In Space 1889, for example, solar power is used by focusing the sun's rays onto a boiler.

It is, the way I see it, a modern-day interpretation, or re-interpretation, of the technology, art, fashion, architecture and lifestyle of most of the 19th century and quite probably a piece of the 20th, specifically, the entire Victorian age and the years leading up to the end of World War I; which is pretty much the 2nd-half of the 19th century right up to c1920. The first use of the word in literature was for the title of Paul di Filippo's 1995 book, 'The Steampunk Trilogy'. (Cont'd)
@CookyMonzta
@CookyMonzta 11 лет назад
Get comfortable, because I may need 3 posts to explain it. As often as I have seen steampunk around me (in film and in literature), I wasn't aware of the WORD being used for this concept until 2 days ago, and this is coming from someone who has read sci-fi/fantasy for nearly 27 years. 'Steampunk' is a word created by sci-fi author K.W. Jeter, in a letter he sent to 'Locus' magazine in 1987. It seems to be the other side of 'cyberpunk', obviously applied to the world of the steam age. (Cont'd)

@mrhyde1888: Some people like to dress up and don't want to have to wait for halloween to do it (and then only once a year). It's another form of escapism. It's basically the same as people who like Star Wars and dress up as characters from the movies. Everybody has a different idea of fun.

Word is getting around that, after a decade or more in relative obscurity, steampunk may be the next big thing. For a good part of the 2nd-half of this past decade, vampires were the craze (thanks in part to the 'Twilight' saga. Nowadays it's zombies (thanks to some of Syfy's low-budget films and 'The Walking Dead' series. The sooner you see steampunk fashion on the racks (which is probably the case now), you'll know that steampunk is now the new thing.

If you start with a leather case, you can add ornate brass panels and a few thin brass and copper tubes, perhaps even a fake gauge or two. This would be my first instinct. Of course, it wouldn't fit in the holster any more, but it would look Steampunk.
