Today I'm reviewing the Steelcase Leap V2 (version 2) ergonomic chair and comparing it to the Herman Miller Embody and Herman Miller Aeron office chairs. Is the Leap the best office/gaming chair? Stay tuned to find out.
I purchased this used Steelcase Leap Version 2 chair in October 2016, and used it as my primary home office chair for a couple of month to get a good feel for it before I passed any judgement on it. Bottom line is it's a fantastic chair and well worth checking out.
Prior to getting the Steelcase Leap, I've been using the Herman Miller Embody chair in my home office for the past year, and I've been using a Herman Miller Aeron chair for the past 10 years at work.

Great video review! Covered way more than most reviewers who seem to focus on how the features work, instead of actual user needs/uses. How I chose my Steelcase Leap was by sitting in it! I found one at a business liquidator for $175 and could not be happier. Oh, and I think its awesome that you included cross-legged sitting, even though it appears that it isn't something you do (I don't and hadn't even considered it, but I know a lot of people do). Thanks!

Great review! I too use a HM Aeron at my office, it's a great chair if you sit properly in it. Also use a Leap V2 at home. As for crossing your legs and other "incorrect" ways of sitting, we all do it, so it's great you've covered that in your review. Another thing to note, I've reached out to the Steelcase Design Studio in Dallas concerning warranty coverage and parts. Even though their warranty is "non-transferable" the service centers may still work with you on service/parts if there's factory defects; so it's really up to the agent supporting you. That made me quite satisfied with my used purchase of my Leap V2.
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 7 лет назад
+Steve Woods Thanks man! I tried to make the review/comparison as 'real world' as possible. Good to know about the Steelcase warranty! Sounds like Steelcase has better 'second hand' support than HM. Luckily, I haven't had a problem with either chair.

Hey folks ,heads up, with the embody arm rests move with back when leaning back ,this means you can't stay under desk because arm rests will get caught under desk or and move away from desk . With the V2 when leaning back the arm rest will stay under desk or where it was positioned ,so you'll be able to type or use mouse.

I had the option to use an Aeron at work once. I ended up using a standard $50 staples chair. It really is one of those chairs that you either love or hate. In searching for a good office chair and considering the Aeron again, I found many reviewers are saying the same thing that people either like the Aeron or absolutely hate it. I hated it, so if you are considering buying new, I would advise to sit on one first before considering it.

What's the difference between the Leap and the Gesture?
@IronCan88
@IronCan88 4 месяца назад
@@staypositive4358you need the try both to see which you prefer. If you are looking used, gesture cost about double the price of leap; however that doesn't mean gesture is definitely better. Gesture has even better arm in terms of adjustability, but Leap v2 's arm is already great. The reason I chose leap v2 is because I feel it gave better lumbar support than the gesture and overall more comfortable for me. But try both to form your opinion. Also I. This video, he didn't mention how noisy the embody chair is, so if it's an office environment, it may be a concern, beyond the unique appearance.

Great review, you just helped push me to pick up a leap v2 today! Unfortunately the store I was at didn't have a embody as they "sell to fast, when they get them" the sales guy said. The sales guy said the same thing as you, leap v2 has firmer lumbar support (that's what I need most). Also tried out the leap v1, & gesture while i was there. The gesture is really nice, and really worth looking at but the leap v2 still had the edge with slightly more aggressive lumbar. And the leap v1 was nice as well with a better "spring" back, then the v2? Maybe because the seat back was shorter?

Based on this review I ordered the Leap 2 chair in a custom colour. They shipped pronto to my remote area and unpacking was a joy. Now to my review. I am a large man over 6 feet nd 300lbs. The seat may be thin but firmly cushioned and very comfortable. The back (no headrest) is marvellously supportive and the adjustable lumbar is nicely adjustable. I have suffered for year with sciatica pain so this was an investment piece for me for long term ownership. The floppy armrest pads are brilliant and all adjustability feature work as described in your video. Even the carpet rollers make a difference on my recycled bumpy floor mat other chairs got caught up on constantly. My fav options is the sliding seat cushion that supports my longer legs & thighs amazingly well with zero fatigue after hours of sitting. But there is one catch. The cradle metal U-shaped base that attaches everything for adjustability is fixed and the two circular pivot "joints" do not widen. They dig into my hip area terribly and the chair is not offered in wider widths. In fact with the exception of maybe the Cobi model, all Steelcase chairs are based on the same physical design. At $1700 (with the exchange rate in Canada) I am sorely disappointed that larger widths are not offered considering the price of this well designed chair. A model that is armless would have solved this issue or widen the pivot points by 3" or so to prevent the hip digging. I would think that anyone my size should condor the Herman Miller Aero for it's bottom seat cradle design or the armless version as a better bigger person choice. Finding comfortable seating for large body types usually means massive chairs, overly padded and less supportive as similar prices. I hope Steelcase is listening for future designs because they nailed 90% of my wish list.

For a second opinion, I had the leap v2 for 1 month. Arm adjustement are amazing but it is very loose and will move if you elbow rest on them. I returned it cause I could feel the back lumbar support bar, it hurt my back after long sitting no matter the setting. I finally switched for the embody, back support is right on perfect, but I wish it had the same arm as the leap v2 did, the arms dont go back as far as I wish they did, they would need to be longer towards the back and I hate the way they tilt from side to side. I dont mind the cushion on the embody, but it is more firm and it will take some time to adjust to, I would say the leap's cushion is superior. Leap feels cheap for its materials/construction, embody feels very premium and is eye catching, it gives my office a omg feeling. I preferred how the leap would have its back lean, the arm would stay still, embody's arm follows the chair and will lift your desk if you are up close with the arms underneath. Rocking with the embody while watching a video is better tough, but make sure you back off from your desk for full stretching. Overall I would say the leap v2 is a better chair, but I prefer the back support of the Embody. As someone else said, there is no clear winner as of now in premium chairs
@descai10

Great video, thank you. I definitely want a chair where I can sit cross legged or otherwise pretzeled, so I appreciate you demonstrating this! At home I’m currently sitting on old wooden dining chairs, which were ok as dining chairs when I bought them 8+ years ago, but now the cushion padding is bottoming out and they are literally falling apart, so I really need to choose and buy a new chair (and almost literally anything would be better right now!). I was really keen on the Humanscale Freedom until I found one to try, and just couldn’t get it adjusted to fit comfortably at all. As well as struggling with the back height to properly support my lumbar and still being high enough to support the rest of my back, and wrangling the headrest and having it clash with the mid back position, I didn’t like not being able to lock the recline position. Plus it felt like I was always sliding around on the leather, so I’ve changed my mind on that too! At work I have this old and pretty jacked up Positiv Plus chair that I inherited when someone left, which was an enormous improvement on the low backed simpler Positiv Me chair I had before that was causing me a lot of pain (it’s a UK ergo brand). Apart from being old and creaky, with a wobbly back and dodgy arm rest that won’t stay correctly or symmetrically positioned, it’s fully loaded with all the adjustments, complete with air lumbar pump and seat depth & tilt, all of which are hard features to give up. A new one would set me back £1k though, and I’m really not sold on shelling out that much for a boring and huge black plastic chair to have at home instead of something that looks a bit sleeker. I’m looking at the Leap v2 now, or maybe the Please V2, which isn’t really on RU-vid much because it’s not available in the US, but it seems comparable to the Leap in a lot of ways but with a two piece back system which reviewers say gives more lumbar support. The Please is much more plentiful second hand and I can pick up a refurb for about £200, compared to more like £330 for the Leap when they’re in stock, but I’ve struggled to find somewhere to go and try them out so it’s a bit of a gamble. Buying chairs is tough!
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 5 лет назад
Yup...buying a good chair is tough. If you can try one of the Steelcase chairs out before you buy one, I'd definitely recommend that. If you can't, the Leap is a solid chair (I've never heard of the other one you mentioned). Good luck with your search!

The Aeron triggered sciatic issues I never previously had '...got rid of it and thankfully issue went away. The Gesture was nice but I preferred the Leap as the lumbar support for me was better. The Embody is nice too, but it promotes more of a "lean back" posture...I.e. your hip angle is greater than 90 degrees (not ideal for me when typing at desk). You can crank up the seat back in an effort to correct this but the upper corners of seat back curl forward slightly and given my height push my shoulders forward slightly (rounded shoulders) and I find this bothersome and uncomfortable. So...for my personal chair...so far I prefer the Leap.

Questtt3 What kind of material the seat pan of the Leap is made of? I've had coccydynia issues recently and am looking for a seat pan that doesn't bottom out and put pressure on my tailbone

The forward tilt seat pan is an option on the leap depending on model you buy.

Because you're so tall.. it's cutting into yoru shoulders. I'm 5' 11 and I didn't have any issues, but I could see where it was. I'm going back and forth between the two also and they let me test the chair now to take it home.

I have both chairs. In the long run Embody seems to be better because you have better control on front part of the seat. You can lift very front edge of the chair like you do in the car for example. In Gesture/Leap bottom part in always flat.

Does the Embody have a forward tilt lock type of function? I like the ability to rock in it ... but for intense tasks, I want to know if it'll sit up straight and comform to the back. Great reviews!

I picked up a used Leap early this for $120. It was essentially brand new. I don't think the previous owner ever sat in it. For the price I got it for, it's unbeatable. I can sit in it for hours and get up w/o any back pain.

For lower back pain and heating sensation in the lower body glutes, which chair would you recommend ? I would currently use the vari drafting chair right now and debating between Aeron due to the pressure points reduction.

Hi, great review. I have been testing the Embody for a few days at home and I like it. However, the lumbar support presses too hard on my back and is not adjustable... So I will probably have to send it back. Since you had both chairs, can you tell me if the lumbar support of the Leap can be adjusted in such a way that it presses less than the Embody? Does the tension adjustment make a big difference between the mini and the max? Thank you !

Also resistance knob works very strange on my Gesture. It does not provide enough resistance. Seems like it stopped half way from what I would have chosen.

Hi Myxo, nice video - thank you! Which chair do you currently use as your favourite for home use? I liked all the chairs at the showroom (Leap v2, Embody, Aeron, Gesture), I'm struggling to make the final decision on which to pick! I have to sit for very long hours so being comfortable for long sessions is most important to me
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 5 лет назад
Thanks man! When you say home use, do you mean home office use? If so, my personal favorite is the Aeron (been using one for 12 years now), followed by Embody (which I've been using at home for over 2 years now), then the Leap. If I had to choose one of the three (with all things being equal i.e. price), I'd choose the Aeron...but that's just my opinion!

The lumbar support is much aggressive on the Leap than the Embody. Also, Leap is easier to switch between upright and recline. But, Embody don't allow you to stay too upright. The hight back of Embody can could also cut on to your shoulder if you are taller. Leap also sit much warmer than Embody.

Great video! I currently have an Aeron classic which I like but I do feel the front plastic bar after a while. But I do love that it forces me to sit ergonomically. Do you feel the leap fabric is hotter than the embody? I’m moving and my new place won’t have central AC. I’m considering the embody as it seems a bit more comfortable than an Aeron while having the rocking motion I love with the Aeron

I'd love to try the Steelcase leap v2. I had a HM embody at work, omg best chair ever. Loved it. No pain, ugly chair imo but supports you. Which is what I care more about. We had the opportunity to try a bunch of HM chairs and we all chose the Embody. The Aeron is not comfortable, I don't get why it's so popular and everyone knows about that.

Great video! I'm in the process of comparing these two. Biggest question I have is which one is better for "active sitting"? I tend to be all over the place in my chair: correct posture when typing, leaning back or left or right during a webex, gaming can be leaning way back with a controller or more propped up for a game where I access the keyboard ... but in general I feel like I'm all over the chair with my butt on the edge or pressed firmly against the back depending on what I'm doing.

Thanks! I made a new video where I sort of address this question here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NHFqCFe0i2k.html. I think the Embody is the way to go for an 'active' sitter.
