It never fails. As soon as I need to replace something on my Spit, you always seem to have a video less than a year old that covers it. Thank you for your continued service, Sir. :)

I found that putting the rubber boot into almost boiling water certainly helped facilitate installation

Hi Steve, you was on the right track with the conical sleeve, the trick is to make the cone longer than the boot, but roll it in a cylinder and slide it inside the boot with a couple more inches sticking out and the cylinder will unwind and a cone shape will form which you pull over the wide bit, also you pull the boot up rotate it in the same direction as you have wound the cylinder, to much grease makes it harder work,

Thanks Carl! So I got a new set today and will try this approach. I gotta get it done lol.

That's why they call those lock nuts.

Steering racks were in my experience a fine way for folk to rip people off , reconditioning them consisted of the application of a can of black paint and maybe a couple of new rubber boots. The only way to get them was to either buy new, from a reputable supplier, to have them rebuilt by an established reconditioning shop, or to do it yourself!

The hardest part of mine was those damned boots. But now I know how to do it.

Same rack used in Herald & Lotus Elan but it has spacers to limit travel, as the Spitfire would almost turn 90degrees & look like it was about to push the tire off the rim. IIRC the rack takes gear oil 90W, not grease. Adjust pinion to rack at either side as the center is worn and if adjusted there it will bind up solid at either end. Also, not getting to your pinion bearings makes this almost a waste of time. Also, also, many rack gears are bent/twisted so do the best you can.

Easy enough job if it gives me issues. I checked the reference material and it says to use multipurpose grease for the rack. We shall see.

I've heard slip an airgun with a skinny nozzle into the boot and use compressed air to help force the boot over the nut.

Ohhhhh that is a solid idea!

That's a classic trick for removing and installing rubber grips of many types (like bicycle and motorcycle handlebar grips).

Nice. 👍 Did you find a little plastic bean looking thing in the steering rack? I had one under the rubber mount, held in place with what looked like masking tape. I put it back. Just found it interesting.

I did! And I kept losing it through this whole process haha. But I kept putting it back. I’m curious about its purpose and how I can better secure it. I though about glueing it in or something.

Maybe not too critical here (and I don't know if you can get them) but there are two things you never reuse - cotter pins and lock tabs. Also, that little nut you mentioned that was part of the electrical - it is and provides a ground point for steering column electricals. Also, per the owners handbook, you remove it and put in a temporary zirc fitting for greasing. Nice rack, Steve!!.

That is sound advise, and I might actually take you up on that. You can buy replacements. I only had to rebend on of the three tabs on it, but now you have me thinking. And temporary zirc fitting? That’s odd, why not just a permanent one?
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 10 месяцев назад
@@StevesProjectCarGarage not sure why not permanent. Maybe trouble with electrical continuity.
