Steinhart Ocean 1 Steel vs Titanium 500 Comparison Watch Review

A quick comparison between these two outstanding offerings from Steinhart. The stainless steel Ocean 1 offers excellent value for money at under £300, and the Titanium 500 provides an even better spec at a solid price of under £500. Both watches are so great it's hard to make a decision.

Steinhart, please make a stainless version of your Steinhart Ocean 500 and please make an improvement on your bracelet clasp to compliment the quality and beauty of your bracelet, I will wait for it. This Ocean 500 is the start of your own identity in the watch world design, congratulations!!!

No offense, but the Ti 500 is by far a better looking watch. All the "homage" thing about the Subs from Rolex are getting a bit long in the tooth. The Ti 500 is a "unique" watch, it's Steinhart's "design", yeah, with cues taken from the Subs maybe, but if we are going down those lines, nearly all watches are copies of other watches somewhere down the line.

Very good job on the review. I was very close to taking the plunge but finally realized what has been holding me back. The matte finish of the watch appeals to me greatly. The glossy bezel is the show stopper for me. If they could do a bezel in the fashion that Omega did for the Gen 3 X-33 (which is to say it is not glossy at all), I would be all over this. Thanks again for the great review.

Titanium 500 by a mile. The fully lumed ceramic bezel and the SUPER BRIGHT loom (even competes with my tritium TWTEC) can view it all night, so unless your going caving this is an amazing watch bang4buck its unbeatable! The A10 is better than 2824's (any grade) too. On par with the 283x models, factory regulated to

Titanium isn't really stronger than steel, just less dense thus lighter, and has better corrosion resistance. That said, I personally prefer the features of the new model but am not wild about the Ti color. Now maybe with a black PVD finish ...
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter
you can get lighter ti colours, like on tudor pelagos. But I prefer the darker colour as it's more of a talking point.

In looking at both watches (and the Ocean 39GMT, which has the same wide sword hands, I think (to me), that the wide hands draw too much attention to the hands, and not the watch. I am wondering whether Steinhart would put Mercedes hands (or equivalent) thinner hands on the Ocean GMT. Just me, but still beautiful watches.

The big thing a titanium watch has going for it is comfort. In the summer it don't hear up as a stainless, and so in the winter you don't get that Cold steel feeling against your skin. It's really the only reason why I would buy it, but this finish is going to wear off so fast.

Recently bought a ocean one TI, mine has the ETA 2892-A2, watch is short about 10 seconds in a month. Love the bracelet, clasp could be better, If tis watch had the same, or similar hands and face as the the Ocean one 39 ... This watch would be a 10 out of 10. I have spent a lot of time with a few Rolex watches, Tags, IWC even a Patek, im not comparing this watch to a Rolex or Patek, But ... I honestly cannot believe the quality of the TI one for the money, completely blown away. Tags are shit compared to what this Ocean one TI is.

Not the same movement at all. Tudor uses an in-house movement in their Black Bay and Pelagos. Even prior to that, the grade of the movement used in the Tudor's were all Top grade. There is no way to compare Tudor to this junk except to say they are both wrist watches.
@Spiederia
@Spiederia 7 лет назад
Anthony Mowbray - You are incorrect. There are different grades of ETA movements. Tudor used, and uses all Top Grade ETA movements. Steinhart does not. There are significant differences between the grades. Additionally, Tudor is a luxury brand. Yes owned by Rolex, which is terrific. All Tudor watches are made in the Rolex factory. Your opinion that Tudor is a poor man's Rolex is simply an ignorant statement. Tudor recently released their own in house movement which elevated the brand to the next level. Do your research before you post an ignorant opinion.

316 is best for watches if you have allergies / 904l has extra copper and chromium which can irritate the skin . All rolexs were 316 untill the 80s . But divers complained the backs of the watches were impossible to remove for servicing ( if you were a submariner ) nothing to do with pressure more the chlorine scrubbers that filtered the air .sealed the backs to the watches . Hence 904l copper and a higher chromium helped with chlorine oxidation . To say its harder than 316 is a misconception theyre very similar in rockwell hardness but 904l is harder to produce hence 3 times the price with copper and 3 times more chromium than 316 .is purely for acidity resistance . Although some people do have a reaction to allergies than 316 .which has a higher stress rating less succeptable to bending when they state 904l has a higher tollerance to acid than 316 , thats not a bad point for 316 , as your hand would disolve before the 316 would even be minorly affected ..

3:53 "Because it's titanium, ultimately it is stronger than the steel." This is actually false. Titanium is not stronger than steel. This is confusing for most because titanium has a greater strength to weight ratio. For the titanium watch to be as "strong" as the steel one it would need to be made much larger in every dimension (think at least double the size). To put it simply, "Titanium is just glorified aluminum."
@muffemod
@muffemod 7 лет назад
Typical titanium alloy has a rockwell C hardness of around 34 with most steels at 53 or higher. You're confusing strength and strength to weight ratio. For flight and aerospace applications where weight is a concern, you will want a high strength to weight ratio. For pure strength steel is king. offgridweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Rockwell-HRC-hardness-knife-steel-chart.jpg
@jibrail600
@jibrail600 7 лет назад
You are right. However 316L isn't exactly what comes into mind when phases like "Steel is king" shows up. Especially that "L" means low C content which makes it weaker than normal 316 alloy In general stainless steel is wanted for its anti corrosive properties or high temperature applications not strength wise. ST-37 construction is steel is much stronger than any stainless steel. Also we don't know what alloy Titanium is in this Ocean 1 Titan 500. It could be softer temper or the excellent Ti-6AL4V or maybe 6AL4V2Sn. We simply don't know. Saying titanium is a glorified aluminum is a bit exaggerated I think.

Perhaps because: "Montres Tudor SA has designed, manufactured and marketed Tudor watches since 6 March 1946. Rolex founder Hans Wildorf conceived of the Tudor Watch Company to create a product for authorized Rolex dealers to sell that offered the reliability and dependability of a Rolex, but at a lower price."

IMO the stainless steel Steinhart looks vastly better than the titanium version - and will look even more so over time as the titanium will be an absolute stratch magnet. At this price-point I think the stainless steel watch is no-brainer. For this type of watch, to get a decent finish on the case and bracelet in titanium you're really looking at a Grand Seiko diver or the Tudor Pelagus - but of course they're 10x the cost of the Steinhart. At this level the titanium looks like junk.

i take titanium anytime, just because the work involved to make extract and mold cut and polish a block of titanium, and at night titanium had a very particular satin shine glow only particular and noticed in titanium metal of gods,the ones who knows , know you are wearing a titanium watch, stainless steel watches are anywere, titanium watches are very hard to find and cost more. plus if you wear a gold ring or leather bracelet it blends beautiful, no clash.
