On loan from a generous viewer, today I am reviewing the Steinhart Ocean One Titanium 500 GMT. Steinhart packs a lot of high quality features into a pretty affordable package with this watch. Features like a fully lumed ceramic bezel, an AR coated sapphire crystal, full titanium construction, and of course GMT functionality can all be found at a price well just over $600 USD.

Thanks for watching!

I have this watch on my hand now and I bought it one mounth and a half ago. It's working perfect and the tolerance is -2 seconds per day. Just few scratches but not something crazy. I used it in water in the Persian Gulf and it's perfectly eligible. The lume is awesome and the weight is so low. The only down thing is the clasp but I got used to it. It's a little bitt better then the steel clasp but it can be much more better. The bezel is perfect with no play and it's clicking awesome. In the start it's very hard to turn it but after one month of playing with it started to work awesome. The titanium is grade 2 not the grade 5 like on other titanium watches and it's much more hard then the grade 5. That's why it's hard as fock to make it shine. It has it's own style and it's totally different from the big Rolex. Paying 660 euro for this plus the shipping is a great bang per buck. Cheers

I just bought mine yesterday here in Singapore. There is now available a Titanium 39mm Ocean One 500 GMT. I tried it on. It's nice, but a little small. As one person said on a blog, he wishes there was a 40mm version. Mine is this 42mm and it just fits. But honestly...this watch is awesome. For as much as I travel, it's not a true GMT. But that's fine. This watch is a real tool watch like Rolex was in the 1970's. A lot of watch for the money. You get a tougher looking Batman without the Mercedes hand. Nothing wrong with it...Rolex is amazing, but for a tool watch...this is amazing. Great review! I have noticed that the seconds hand is a bit thinner on mine. I bought it from Gnomon so it might be the latest version.

I love GMT watches. The Steinheart watches seem to be a very nice option, and i think the Ocean 39 GMT Premium 500 will be my next watch. As a pilot I use the GMT hand as just that the GMT hand, while the 12hr hand is set to my Home time of MST. When i do use the bezel its for where I am traveling or where ever i need to figure out the time because I can work the bezel off of the GMT easily.

I have this watch and this review is pretty much spot on. Overall, it’s a lot of watch for the money. Very well made with a good movement. While it may take a few cues from the Rolex BLNR, the design has some originality; sword hands, date complication at 6, no cyclops, minute index in the chapter ring and a different font for the numerals on the bezel. If there is a weakness, it would be in the clasp on the bracelet. It can be a scratch magnet. Great job on the review!

I wear a Steinhart ocean one, vintage red mk1-double red (yup, the discontinued beauty.) everyday as my daily beater, it runs fast, half a sec every day, well thats within COSC at its best imo. I think with Steinhart you get more than the watches, that are great quality, besides that you get a forum of groups worldwide of fellow watch-lovers, that never are negative at all. ETA/Steinhart...its a good combo, great bang per buck, no doubt. the 500 gmt is a stunning watch, as since it came out, many said: it can really stand by itself, and yes..it can, its a great watch, and imo above the segment homage/replica. How many CEO´s often swings by to say "Hi"??...well, Gunter from Steinhart does. as a daily beater, first Swiss Made, you cant go wrong with a Steinhart. Thank you for another well done review. Hi, thanks for the review. I would however like your opinion as to how the watch wears. I've been itching to pull the trigger on the regular Ocean One but have been put off by the flat lugs as mentioned in some reviews. I have a 7&1/2 inch wrist and worry the 39mm is too small and the 42mm too big.
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 6 лет назад
This watch was about 2 links too large for me and I didn’t want to go resizing someone else’s watch. I didn’t get to wear it much at all. It’s about the same size as the Ocean One Diver I’ve reviewed in the past though, albeit lighter because of the titanium. My wrist is 6 3/4 inches and felt the 42 was just about right but slightly bigger then I prefer. For you at 7.5 I’d think it would be perfect unless you tend to favor smaller watches.

@@tkm3207 , his point was that setting the new local time stops the seconds hand. This requires setting time one minute ahead, obtaining accurate "seconds" time, and waiting until the time reaches zero seconds again.

As an owner of this watch, I have to agree that I wish ETA made a GMT movement where the hour hand could be set separately instead of the GMT hour hand. That said, it's still a great watch both in function as well as looks.

Great job on the video. Audio is clear and so is the picture. Really good job. I just wanted to reply to the video for a comment on 1 aspect and a question as well. First off, GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. It's the same time all around the world and doesn't change! Set that second hour hand and leave it. This may be a diving watch but every commercial pilot should be using a GMT function watch. Why "aviation" watches don't all have this feature is beyond me. Having flown as a pilot for some years, the GMT feature is used regularly,.. why you ask? Because all weather and flight planning is recorded in GMT time. Weather forecasts, PIREPS, SIGMETS,.... on and on . Log books are all on GMT, time out, time off, time on, time in,... you can just look and read the time off. IT"S NOT FOR PILOTS WANTING TO CHANGE THE GMT TIME TO THEIR LOCATION IN SOME DISTANCE CITY, ITS FOR TO KNOW THE GMT HOUR!!!!!. There's my rant. My question is, could there be a chance or scratching up the face due to the raised dome on this model? Thanks.
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Appreciate it. Regarding the question about the possibility of scratching the face? I assume you mean the glass/crystal? There is always a chance on any watch but being as this uses a sapphire it's a pretty scratch resistant material. I've never scratched a sapphire crystal, but it can happen.
@augustinf
@augustinf 4 года назад
I own this watch and this is how I use the GMT: the GMT hand is just there to give me a 24h local time, the normal 12h hand too, and I move the bezel depending on the time difference... So that the GMT hand actually shows me the time it is in the time zone I select. what you are doing is very confusing and I doubt it's the way it's supposed to be used.

Hi, great review. Only negative for me is the beveled crystal, seems to distort/hide the minute markers if on a steep angle and will get bonked a lot. Not a deal breaker. So, since you have seen/felt the Davosa 42mm Ternos Professional, which do you think is better quality, including the proprietary work on the 2893 movements each have? I am coming up on a purchase of either this March (for a milestone Bday). Thanks again.

Like so many other new companies, Steinhart wouldn't have a customer base without copying Rolex. That said I almost bought one of their GMTs until I read recently on watchuseek that other customers were having problems with their GMT movements. Good thing I waited because I picked up a NOS Glycine Airman 18 (with the old logo) in the same price range. Wish I could part with it temporarily to send it to you for review, but this comment will have to suffice. To make what could be a long story short, with the Glycine I ended up with a watch that had its own heritage that has been running within COSC specs while easily tracking THREE time zones. Here's a pointer on using the GMT bezel: select a whole hour in the other time zone you're tracking, not in between, and leave it there. The extra hand is meant to track in 24 hr time so you know if it's day or night in the other time zone. On the Glycine you can track two 24 hour time zones with the extra 24 hour hand by the 24 hr time printed on the dial and the 24 hr bezel. You can also lock the Glycine's bezel. Great for people who actually leave their desk with their watch (like the military). Even many watch guys don't know that Glycine was doing a water resistant watch with a rotating bezel tracking another time zone at the same time Rolex did in the 1950s. So it was not an homage to Rolex, but an independent approach. Although Steinhart has yet to do anything original, Glycine hasn't done anything new in 50 years. Much like tired old tulip-mania-priced Rolex.
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching and sharing that info. I reviewed a Glycine a while ago, one of their Combat Subs, and I liked it. It was also one of the older models with the previous logo. I'm surprised the brand isn't more popular they seem to have some good things in their catalog.
@chrissullins3
@chrissullins3 6 лет назад
Unfortunately they seem to be stuck in the 1960s and rarely use modern social media. They seemed to have hit their height when a couple astronauts wore the Airman back in the 1960s. It's quite possible the firesale prices over the past year or so has been a good way for them to expose the brand to the wider world (it helped me buy). It's also possible they're quite satisfied making only 12,000 watches per year as long as the quality is there and their customers are happy. They may never expand much beyond watch geeks and the military.

Hi. This is the way I use the GMT complication (watch with bi-directional bezel and I am to lazy to do the math :-) ): First for work: I have to stay in contact with various location of my company around the world so, the 24 hand is always at a reference point. In my case Greenwich . Since I already know the time difference from GMT to other countries that I need to contact (e.g. Japan +9 hours) I move the Bezel + 9 hours and that is it. If I need to change to India, I do not do the math (lazy guy I know) I return the Bezel at the zero position and then move it to +5 (that is really easy to do if the bezel is bi-directional, not so much if unidirectional). Second, for travel: I change the 12-hour hands to local time, the 24-hour one, always in GMT and the bezel in home time (GMT -4). Again, If I need to check time in other locations, well same procedure as above. It is a little long to explain but it is really fast and easy to do. As always very detailed review. Thanks a lot and cheers.
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching and sharing your process with the GMT. Seems like a good way to work it. Having the GMT hand always pointing to a reference spot seems like the easiest way to use it. My idea would be to always have it pointed to your home time, but having it Greenwich makes a lot of sense too.

I’m thinking that most of the watch guys who buy GMT’s only actually use that feature maybe once every couple of years and even then, it’s only for a couple of days or weeks at a time anyway. There certainly are plenty of people out there who do so much traveling that a GMT really serves its purpose but most of us probably just buy them because they’re cool looking. If all you’re doing is visiting family one or two time zones away every year or two, you most likely already know exactly how many hours ahead or behind they are so immediately upon checking the time, you know what time it is back home basically instantly. It’s much quicker to read 3:00 pm and add or subtract 2 hours in your head than it is to bother with a watch bezel. All of that said, I think GMT watches are really cool and I’d love to own one eventually, even though I’d hardly ever get any meaningful use out of that particular feature.

I think the idea is to set the regular hands to your home time, the GMT hand to GMT time and the bezel to your destination time. GMT time doesn’t change or have daylight savings so it’s easy to use it as an easier reference for true time than US time zones.
@jefferyneu3915
@jefferyneu3915 2 года назад
Everything you said about the GMT hand was correct. More importantly, to me, GMT time never changes. It does not observe daylight saving time (summer time, many places). So, changing the local hour time hand, indepently, is much simpler when traveling.

@MrTonglong
@MrTonglong 5 лет назад
If the watch stops and it tells the wrong time. Then the gmt will be the wrong time too. When you set the hour hand, the gmt hand will also move so that it's always correct on gmt time respective to your time zone. If the hour hand could be set independently then you'd need to set both time zones every time the watch stops. Instead of just once.

If you can independently move the gmt hand I can't see why you wouldn't be able to set the hour hand to your local time and your gmt hand to your home time? Even if setting th hour hand moves the gmt, wouldn't you just set the local time then reset the gmt independently to home time? I must be missing something, or is it just an extra step and that's why it bothers you? I've never had a GMT, and am new to watches so bare with me please lol

Steinhart makes a good watch for the money. More derivative than most but good value. An objection I have against this watch and indeed most “GMT”-watches is that they, due to their modular construction, don’t really do GMT. Rather, they have a fourth hand with a 24-hour turnaround. A proper GMT means you can move the regular hour hand in 1 hour increments, forwards or back. This, much like my Sjöö Sandström Worldtimer, only offers one to move the 24 hour hand in one direction. It almost does the same thing, only less elegantly. Scenario: you land in city X, six hours ahead of you. In a proper GMT you pull the crown, move the hand and Robert is your mothers brother. In one of these you pull the crown out two positions, hack the movement, turn the crown a lot, wait until the seconds align. Then you have to put the crown in the first position and turn the 24h-hand six hours ahead. It works, but it’s not really the way it should be. Now, I know of only three manufacturers who make actual GMT-movements in any kind of volume: Omega, (Grand) Seiko and Rolex. Still, it always does bother me that my “Worldtimer” is mainly for setting to a time zone I’m not in rather than being on my wrist when I travel.

@903lew
@903lew 6 лет назад
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews It quite defeats the purpose of the fourth hand if I’m honest making it rather more of a Day/Night indicator. Helpful if you mainly deal with one other time zone and don’t use it for travel I suppose.

Great video man! Great watch also. But just so you know that's not how you'd use a GMT watch. The point is the normal hands are the time zone you are in, the gmt hand is gmt time so +0 and then it is super easy to either move the bezel or just do the math quickly to know what time it is everywhere in the world

Have to say I started this review with a fairly negative view on Steinhart in general. But after this, I am impressed. Titanium or GMT isn't really my thing, but was impressed with the materials used and the movement. 500m and an open case back? Who else does that? I love an open case back and it's something I think more luxury manufacturers should be doing, and this kinda proves there's no excuse not to have a display back, if theres no other anti-magnetic components/tech in the movement. Don't like the logo at all though... Fantastic review once again, thanks for sharing .

Good video. The part about setting the GMT hand for a second time zone and using the bezel for a third time zone being awkward for you befuddled me. I don't see what is awkward. How would you have designed the watch differently to avoid the issue you mention? For me it is simple. If I am in New York and I travel to Paris and wish to keep track of time in Hong Kong, while I'm on the plane to Paris I change the hour hand from its current position at 12 noon to read 6 pm. The GMT hand will read home (New York) time - 12 noon. I will rotate the bezel so that "6" is at the twelve O'clock position - this reminds me that I have a 6 hour difference between Paris and Hong Kong. I will have to remember that the six hour difference is positive, not negative and Bob's your Uncle! Your shiny new GMT Steinhart is kicking ass and chewing bubble gum! ;)
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching buddy. For the gmt setting, I prefer the way a number of other watches work. You set the hour hand back and forth independently and when you hack the movement the GMT hand rotates with the whole handstack. It’s not a big deal but that feels more intuitive to me.
@asktonyc
@asktonyc 6 лет назад
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews I see what you mean. The way you prefer it is a more thoughtful design. It is probably more expensive to build that type of movement. I bet Steinhardt made the movement their way to keep prices down.

The way JustBlueFish describes is the way e.g. Rolex and Omega do it. Steinhart isn't making own movement its the design of the ETA 2893 that is used in this watch and many others... they just so some pelage and custom rotor.

Everything was going so well... until the "GMT" part. You could use home time (in 24-hour mode) as the reference (via the "GMT pointer") if you wanted to. The destination time would be then computed from the home time (in 24-hour format) instead from the GMT. Example of flying from California (home) to London with a stop/layover at O'Hare in Chicago: California 3 pm/15:00, local time in Chicago 5 pm/17:00, London time 23:00 (15:00 plus 8) on the bezel. I understand now that this would be a non-standard method.

I own this precise watch. I think it has great styling and the lume on the dial and bezel are superb. The decoration on the movement is impressive given the price point. It's accuracy is reasonable as it runs about 8 secs a day fast - but not spectacular. It is very handsome and definately not really a homage as it has it's own styling. It is reasonable value but overally I am a dissapointed with this particular watch. Firstly the Titanium scuffs really easily so if you wear it everyday it won't be looking new for very long. The bracelet and especially the clasp are not great quality (the screws on the bracelet have a tendency to unscrew - which is a bad design feature). The actual precision of the case fabrication is rather poor - so my one the lugs have an uneven width left and right and top to bottom - this is my major criticism and possibly is only applicable to the Titanium which I believe is more difficult to manufacture. My advice give the Titanium Steinharts a BIG miss as there are a number of QC issues. The Bezel is aligned (unlike my Seikos) but is rather stiff needing two fingers and concentration to move - certainly takes a few twists to get it moved around and is not a smooth operation. The AR is not terribly good - certainly most of my other watches have better AR coating (e.g. Squale, Maurice Lecoix, Breitling) - it also seems to smudge and needs more cleaning with a soft cloth - I have no idea why this should be the case. Finally it is not a terribly comfortable watch to wear on my slightly above average wrist (7-3/4 inch). The lugs needed to be turned down a bit more so it sits on the wrist rather than perches on the wrist. It is also a bit too thick so you are inclined to bump it. My advice is to get the 39 mm version in steel and give this specific watch a wide miss as there are alternatives or get the Squale 50 Atmos which has a much more precisely engineered case (althouh the lume is not so good and the straps are mediocre). Steinhart are budget watches and look closely you will see they are of lesser quality than say an Oris or a Squale but not bad value - especially the GMT flavours.

2824-2 is easy to regulate. Like really easy, I've never owned a mechanical watch before, had this one now for 3 weeks. I still forget how to use the crown often, but wanted to play with the accuracy of my Steinhart Ocean1. It's a tiny screw, gave it a ~ 1/6th of a turn and now it runs +1-2 seconds a day. I wear it 12 hours and found that dial up is the best position for off wrist...all other positions giving me +2 seconds over night Edit** just realized the gmt is not the 2824-2 lol. Ignore comment I suppose, but I would imagine it's a similar process for regulating.
