So for overall quality go Steinhart... for brand recognition go Seiko... I have an Ocean One 39 black ceramic, as well as a Seiko Samurai. Even after replacing the Sammy's crystal to a sapphire, and the bezel insert to ceramic.. the Steinhart is still a more robust piece.

Perth WAtch STILL using mineral glass on their mid-tier watches, pressed clasps, downgrading movements while upping prices, that hideous “X” on their ProSpex divers, and seemingly wanting to become a Fashion brand with bloody awful “Street” series....what the f*** is going on? Entry level Swiss is now looking far more appealing in comparison, I’m beginning to think.

A fine, nuanced review. Thanks! Bargain bottom feeder that I am, the Steinhart was a stretch and a commitment when I ordered. The Shogun never made my heart flutter, in part because, to me, all the Seiko automatic divers of similar price point ($5-900) look alike. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan, particularly of the dial layout. I like the Seiko style dial better than the Oris you reviewed recently. The quartz solar chronograph SSC015 class of watches is similar aesthetically and a screaming value being quartz and steel. But that is one man's opinion. The Steinhart's silly fun water resistance rating, case material and decorated, displayed and GMT movement made it no contest when I was shopping for a diver in that tier. I enjoy it very much. In practice though, I find setting the GMT function not intuitive. I like the method the kinetic Seiko SUN019 GMT uses better and it has (shock!) sapphire and a milled clasp to boot. Being tuna-esque and relatively huge makes it different enough to my eye, too. Have to shake-shake-shake it on a regular basis though!
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 лет назад
Thanks for another great comment. I think Seiko do seem to put sapphire in some of the quartz and kinetic models rather than the Prospex diver range... I'm not sure why that is apart from the alleged practical advantages of good mineral glass in a tool watch (which they've never directly stated AFAIK), and possibly trying to push sales of those less popular models. I get what you mean about setting the GMT function, it does take some figuring out. And I also agree about the Kinetic watches seeming to need constant input to keep the power going!
@nightraker
@nightraker 5 лет назад
The SUN019 is a Prospex diver but I take your point: In a world of Eco-Drive and Tough Solar, Kinetic is an also ran. Works quite nifty, an automatic with quartz accuracy (or a quartz powered by a rotor), but not a barn burner saleswise. Therefore, the sapphire crystal and milled clasp for a street price less than a Sumo.

@@PerthWAtch I think he's referring to a "Traveller's GMT", whereby you can jump the hour hand forward/back in hour increments, while the GMT hand doesn't move. This makes it easier for travelling, as the GMT hand can stay on home time. Unfortunately there are no affordable automatic movements that can do this

Nice video Ivan. I can't help but think the Seiko is overpriced though which is why I've never really considered it. Bezel insert bugs me being metal - no reason not to include ceramic. The glass also to a lesser extent but I can understand why Seiko use Hardlex as they own/make it. Both great watches. Pretty sure I'll eventually pick up that GMT hehe.

@PT111111 5 лет назад
If you didn't own any of them and had to choose between one or the other, which would you choose? I also made a comparison between these two based on this video and other review videos. Seiko, Pros - ISO 6425 certified, good looking design (though I would prefer a titanium Samurai), bigger reserve, I live close to a Seiko service centre, bright lume. Cons - Lower build quality (potential misalignment, cheaper feeling bracelet, looser bezel rotation), size is a tad too big at 43-44mm, Hardlex. Steinhart, Pros - Even better looking design with domed Sapphire crystal, exhibition display back, better size at 42mm, gorgeous blue lume, solid build quality, and being "Swiss Made" automatically makes it more desirable to more people than Seiko even if the brand itself isn't as well known. Cons - Harder to find a decent service/repair centre, it's not an ISO 6425 certified watch. If you haven't noticed, I'm leaning more towards the Steinhart, but the potential difficulty in servicing/repair could adversely affect the viability of long term ownership.

Both are stunning watches... so it comes down to your preference of the material characteristics I think. Titanium is much lighter and more durable but scratches easily.

Avoid the Titanium ... I am sure the 39 mm steel would be more comfortable on most wrists... the 42 is not well designed for average wrist. Titanium does buff and scratch really easily and looks shabby very quickly.

If you don’t like scratches then I would avoid titanium. One of the reasons I like it is for the rather different feel it gives, being palpably less dense yet stronger than steel.

I have a Golgo tuna I picked up in Tokyo, then when I got back I shopped around until I found a good deal on a sbbn 033. That is a beautiful watch imo. The one criticism I have for Seiko though are the bands/bracelets. The tuna is not a cheap watch and the rubber it comes on is awful. The same on that Shogun, there's no excuse for such a cheap clasp.

Steinhart's Ti Grade2 (unfortunately Pelagos also) scratches easily Grade 5 (Rolex) just little bit tougher. Comparing on scale Grade2 320, Grade5 400, Steel 2000. Correct me if I am wrong. I think Seiko should get more kudos for durability cause of diamond shield coating. On the other hand, Ti is much tougher material than steel, just too sensitive to leave marks after scratch.

Steinhart beats the shit out of shogun in terms of price, ceramic bezel with lume, GMT, sapphire, etc... I like Seiko watches but always feel this company has been ripping its brand equity off gradually by releasing limited edition on a monthly basis, weak QC, little value for money, and many others complaints.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 лет назад
Yeah I'm inclined to agree actually... Seiko rides on their laurels a lot and while they do continue to put out great designs, the materials come short on value. Not different to many Swiss brands though I might say. To take another view, I can see that in the end a company might choose to charge the prices that maximises profits. You could even argued that to do otherwise would be a disservice to shareholders. Steinhart on the other has to work harder to put out a great product at a good price... they are winning over fans at a quick rate as a result.

I can't say much personally about the Shogun. I never owned one. But, I can say aobut the Steinhart Ti 500 GMT, which I've owned twice. I bought when first released, enjoyed, sold it. It stuck in my mind and felt I had to get it again. I did, but, eventually I also sold the Steinhart re-buy. Main reasons are in the details, which are a few of the downsides, which I've noted towards the bottom of my comments. The Steinhart is a great value for what you get... $700 i paid about new. Swiss ETA movement. It winds incredibly smooth and both examples I've owned have been quite accurate.. +2 to +4 seconds per day. At first people will want to say this is a Rolex Batman GMT homage or copy.. But, there are a lot of differences which make it quite it's own. - 500m WR - Titanium - Lumed Ceramic Bezel, I don't understand why more GMT's of this general style fail to lume the GMT bezel when the GMT hand is usually lumed, it's like having half the information to tell the GMT time in the dark. - Different font style on the bezel, which I prefer is smaller where as the Batman GMT I feel too big and in your face. - display case back - no cyclops (which I prefer) - very good dial symmetry - different handset - different dial look and indices - a bit larger at 42mm - well-placed date window at the 6 to maintain dial symmetry Wishes on the Steinhart which I may hope they fix on perhaps a 39mm version (I expect they willl eventually translate nearly all 42mm Ocean One models to 39mm): - Bi-Directional unidirectional rotating bezel, I don't like rehashed dive bezels for 24-hour GMT purposes. - That center clasp?! I don't understand why it receives the most different finish compared to the rest of the watch. The rest of the watch has a satin brushed finish for the titanium. but, the clasp is almost like a bead blasted matte finish.. so, not only is the surface texture finish different, consequently the greyish tone of the titanium is not the same as the rest of the watch. Luckily is generally on the bottom of your hand and out of sight, but still, it baffles me why they could not maintain the same brushed finish as the bracelet and case.? - Like most other Steinhart of 42mm case size in the Ocean One range, including this Ti 500 GMT, I do not like the say they made the last center link that meets up to the solid end links. the gap between there can stand out as being a little bit more than is needed. More important, the way that last center link is cut is very squared. As such when the bracelet is on the wrist and curves around the wrist, that top edge of the center link rotates outward and reveals a very squared edge.. it just doesn't match and is a bit visually jarring. Because of this straight edge opening, I think that's why the gap around there appears larger and a bit more than is needed. I believe they've fixed this issue on their 39mm versions. I can deal with the unidirection bezel, but the last 2 are issues regarding aesthetic harmony which I really wish they would address some time.. I doubt with this particular model now and future production of the same model. But, perhaps if they make a new updated version in 42mm or if and when they may eventually make a 39mm version of the watch. I said I do not have the Shogun, but I have had Seiko watches with the Diashield coating. That coating does do something to the tone and luster of the metal. Additionally, you can feel the coating and that's why I find when touching the metal it does not feel quite as cold as it would without the Diashield coating. FYI, I'm sure it helps, but from my experience, I still get stratches even with Diashield... is it a lot more? IDK? I take good care of my watches in general. Bur, in my experience, I feel I get about as many, or rather as few, scratches with or without Diashield. Thanks for this video comparison.

Hello. Congratulations for the video. Very interesting and well done. However, I think you should have made the comparison between the SEIKO SBDC029 and the STEINHART Ocean Titanium 500 Premium, which are much more similar. At first I wanted to buy the SEIKO SBDC029 but it is unobtainable in Europe. I also wrote to Seiko and it exists only for the Japanese market. Do you have an idea where to buy it ? Without paying huge customs fees. Then I discovered the STEINHART Ocean Titanium 500 and it's really interesting. Now I have a doubt, also because the STEINHART Ocean Titanium 500 seems really good, even if I am a Seiko lover. I would like your opinion and I would like to see a new video with SBDC029 vs Ocean Titanium 500 Premium Thank you and take care !

Yeah unfortunate thing about customs in Europe it would seem - I think asking a local would be the way to go as I would have no idea how you might get around that! As for comparing against the Ocean Titanium 500, I agree 100% that it would be a closer comparison. I even looked around the house for one but all I could find was this GMT version. So I would like to hear your suggestion as to how I would do the comparison? Perhaps you should buy one and lend it to me? ;)

Seiko underrates their watches from it's time keeping to their water resistance for a purpose i think. The glass case-back calls a bit of a concern and claims the 500m rating for the Steinhart, and I have to give it to Seiko for not trying to be a Rolex Submariner copycat. or not trying to copy Rolex at all. But i believe both watches are nice and accurate. :)

Thanks for the comment, fair enough about giving it to Seiko here. With regards to underrating, I guess if you set a low bar then you shouldn't have any problems jumping over it! :)

I gave Steinhart the win on movement, quality, performance, and value. Seiko took it IMO for versatility, brand, and X-factor. The last is quite subjective, but can you really disagree with the others? I gave a tie for design but many would argue Steinhart should be shot for being a Rolex copier.... this one is more original in many ways but undoubtedly still takes from the GMT Master. Far cry to say it's "superior in every way" I think.
@hksigman
@hksigman 5 лет назад
Perth WAtch honestly, X factor for the Seiko? 99% of the population regards Seiko as just another Japanese watch. I’m not knocking Seiko as I have several but it is not considered anything special by most people. When talking to the average person they are more impressed by the Steinhart because it’s Swiss made. When telling people that I am wearing a Seiko they don’t care even if it’s a King Seiko. It’s just another Japanese watch.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 лет назад
Still doesn't explain "far superior in every way". Not sure who you talk to but almost no one I speak to has even heard of Steinhart, whereas almost everyone knows about Seiko. But as I said, X factor is subjective. The other issues of design, versatility and brand are less so.
@hksigman
@hksigman 5 лет назад
Perth WAtch , you’re missing my point. The X Factor is that the Steinhart is Swiss. The vast majority of people don’t know watches. Tell someone that you’re wearing a Swiss watch of any brand and they know that it’s quality. Tell them that you are wearing a Japanese watch and they couldn’t care less. They can buy a Seiko at any discount store. Tell them that you are wearing a $6000 King Seiko and they walk away thinking that you are an idiot.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 лет назад
You're missing my point - the X-factor is subjective. What you've described is your own experience and view. Mine is that the vast majority of people know Seiko is a reliable and trusted name, and don't know Steinhart from Swatch. That's part of *my* marking, but that's not all... I can consider other factors in this category. You're also missing my overall point in that the Steinhart is simply not "far superior in every way" as you have claimed.

I agree with you 100% Anthony. The Seiko is def far superior in it's design. I think the Steinhart looks awful in comparison. The straight lugs. The bezel grip is far too clunky. It looks like a gear cog. The markers look like they've been painted on with Dulux Gloss paint. The shape of the hands are boringly paddle like. The Date window is too narrow. The face looks too small. I'll concede that It does have a decent movement, but the truth is they're all fairly decent, as long as they haven't been made in China. I own the Steinhart 500 GMT ..... it is simply the most aweful and shocking badly constructed watch I have ever seen. The case is diagonally skew the screw down is not aligned and I would not trust this in a rain shower - there is no ways this will survive any real water action. If the case is shockingly bad .... the bracelet is even more aweful - it literally fell apart because the dumb folks at Steinhart used steal screws into soft Titanium. Because of its straight lugs it is uncomfortable to wear. My bezel is not alligned and has poor action. As for accuracy it is just within ETA limits it gains 14 seconds a day. I would give Steinhart a huge miss - I will grant it is superficially attractive and the lume is good especially on the bezel.... otherwise it was a watch built by committee and it is really really bad.
