Every time I'm on a beach with my dive watch I get asked the time. It's like "you know there's really affordable water resistant watches, right?"

The problem with using a phone to check the time, is that as soon as you look at your phone, it's tempting to check your email or social media. Before you know it, you're wasting 5-10 minutes just to check the time. Also, like you stated, watches are generally more reliable time pieces.

Glad to hear you got the Steinhart speed issues figured out! I just picked up my first Steinhart last week, got the 39mm Ocean Vintage Military. Mine is a touch fast too. I'm going to give it a few weeks before messing with it though. I'd rather have it running fast than running slow.
@simplyserge5000
@simplyserge5000 6 лет назад
Much better fast than slow. A gentleman who watches my videos told me to wind it everyday and that might slow it down. Something to do with the spring. Also to rest it on it’s side or crown at night. Try that for a couple of months. Nice watch btw, love the vintage colours on the military

Brand new subscriber here..been watchin these vids one after the other and man I feel like we're the same person at times!..Our views on car ownership/preference to smaller watches/ stock market/needing to wear a watch/purchasing a luxury watch/limiting phone use. Its crazy...I actually did away with having a car all together and now I'm thinking about a purchasing a Luxury watch myself. CONGRATS on your Rolex purchase! Happy for you. Lookin forward to seeing many more vids of it. Also, I'd love to hear you're opinion on a Smart Watch.

Awesome great to hear about similar views, sometimes I feel like I’m the only one. As for smart watches I havnt tried one so my opinion is not fair but I personally don’t like them because it always has to be charged and that’s a let down. Also, we are so connected online now a days it’s nice to just be free of that with out all the notifications. However, it can save lives if it detects you have no pulse so that’s a major plus. I’d love to test one out but for now I’m definitely into the charm of mechanical watches. It’s like a constant companion that never stops ticking, no battery, no fuss. Thanks’

15 sec a day is pretty normal for that caliber movement, if you play with it you will get it down to 8 sec in one position but it will go 30 sec in another position, hope you get it to your standards

Collecting Vintage Watches not the top elabore grade ETA 2824 it should be more accurate then that. And I guess I must have an EXCELLENT watch maker as he’s gotten all the watches I own with a Selitta or eta movement down to COSC specs +/- 1 to 3 seconds per day

your vids on the steinhart ocean one 39 have really helped me to consider pulling the trigger on one very soon. it definetely seems to be a quality piece & you are getting the most bang for your buck. & picking a quality watch is must for me. i just sold my seiko sarb033 and even made a modest profit from it. and the steinhart 39 definetely seems to be a smart upgrade fot me. one day i'll be a prouf owner of a rolex when i feel my accomplishments have merited it & not just buying one with not much to show for it as a college student. but im definetely impressed so far of the watch thru your vids and other youtubers. so thank u for taking the time to make these vids & posting them. much appreciated. & btw i definetely enjoy listening to a heartfelt, lukewarm review of the steinhart rather than just a cold, objective review. so thank u!

Mate, let give you a tip. Let the power reserve to be consumed and after that wind the watch manually. That will help u 100% :D. I have a Steinhart with 7750 and I had the same issue. But I left the watch to stop completely and now I have a great variation. It's arround +6 / +7 per day.

my ocean 500 titanium is +5 second per day, according to the Windows10 clock app. Coming from a manual-wind, even +15 per day would still be OK with me, cuz by the time it gets to its rotation the power reserve would have long gone and I have to reset the time anyway..

I grew up before the internet, cell phones, etc... I got my first Seiko for Christmas when I was eleven. I wore it scuba diving, water skying, everything until it was worn out. When we get hit with an EMP and everything, internet, cell phones, etc.. shut down, your Steinhart will still be working. You will pass your watches down to your son's long after the cell phones are in the landfill.

What camera or phone do you use to shoot your vids? Excellent quality. Btw I got into watches because of my dad. He always had a nice watch and smelled really good which got me into fragrances also. I remember always staring at his Longines when I was a kid and appreciating the aesthetics and quality compared to my robot watch. Like you, I also started with watches at a young age. After the robot watch (it actually transforms), my dad got me a Casio then in high school I wore a Swatch which just came out at the time. Now I own several watches including a Rolex Submariner no date ceramic, Panerai PAM 312, Tag Heuer Carrera (hand me down from my dad) and an Aquaracer that now belongs to my wife. The 312 is my daily and I wear the Sub occasionally and will hand that down to my son eventually. I would love to add a JLC Master Control or a pre-owned AP Royal Oak jumbo in my collection since I lack a proper dress watch. However, my grail is the ALS Datograph.

I relate so much to what you mean, a watch is dependable it’s your totally loyal friend for life, it will never let you down it’s just there. I also like watches because they are international currency, where ever you go no matter what country if you are caught in the middle of nowhere with no money stranded and you need a lift your watch is always there to use. If you get into trouble and you need to bribe someone your watch is always there although this really only applies to expensive brands like the Rolex, but these are the reasons why I would never go anywhere without my watch.
@simplyserge5000

Great video and interesting content! I got my first watch when i was seven or eight and have wore one every day since. It was a Timex, now i have twenty odd watches!lol. I live in Ireland and no one wears watches here, its all cell phones for timekeeping which is sad. In my dads time every guy wore a watch, typically a dress watch which they used for every activity. Best of luck with the Rolex, you cant go wrong with one.

If you have the means to get the Rolex go for it. I see vintage DateJust for sale all the time in $3000-$4000 USD price range (ebay and various online dealers) if you get the Rolex are you going to keep the Steinhart?
@simplyserge5000
@simplyserge5000 6 лет назад
Ya I’ve seen them at these prices too. Typically though the bands have to much slack on them for me and I prefer to make my own battle scars on them. Otherwise I feel like I’m wearing a part of someone’s else’s history if you know what I mean? And I’m definitely keeping the Steinhart, I need it for playing sports, exercising and travelling. The Rolex would be for work, events, evening activities etc. Cheers

You could get a relatively modern less than 20 year old Datejust 16234 36mm in mint condition for about 4000 dollars or less on e-bay. If you do not feel comfortable with delivery, you could contact the seller and arrange to pick it up in person. Most luxury watch dealers on e-bay do meetups. However, I think since this is your dream watch and your first Rolex, you should get the new, most recent Datejust 116234(the modern version of the 36mm) since the tolerances are much more tighter and you're going to get to wear it with confidence that mechanical problems won't surface anytime soon. Buy it in new condition but I advice not to buy in an AD since even with discounts, you would still be paying a hefty premium. Go e-bay and snag a good deal. A good deal for this particular model is around the 6000 dollar range.

In 2006 while on a cruise & stopping off in the Cayman Islands, I bought my Rolex GMT 11670 stainless for $3,600. It's now close to triple in value (maybe another Tulip Bubble?)! Anyway, having used it & putting the equivalent of about only one year worth of 'mileage' on it, its current value exceeds my appreciation factor (I'm basically over it). I'll be selling it soon and converting it to SEVERAL other watches that are not only reasonable in cost, but to me high in the fun quotient. Finally, if the "Day Just" is your 'HolyGrail' unit, then work at acquiring it. If that feeling ever changes (which is definitely a human trait), at least with Rolex you can usually recoup your hard earned money...

A Rolex Datejust is great but $8,200 cdn is a hard hit to the wallet. I think you should look at a Tudor Prince Date/Day reference#76200 from Yodobashi in Japan. I bought one earlier this year and couldn't be happier. Yodobashi sells the watch for as little as 188,720 yen ($2146cdn) for a watch with a silver linen dial and smooth bezel. One with a fluted bezel and silver sunburst dial is 220,000 yen ($2502cdn). They also have variants with white dial and roman numerals and black dials with arabic numerals and/or stick indices. The watch is encased in a classic 36mm oyster case with drilled lugs. The crystal is sapphire with a cyclops. The crown is threaded and the watch is resistant to 100m. The bracelet is a jubilee type with 20mm lug spacing. The only drawback is that the endlinks are hollow but that's not a big deal. The watch is basically a Rolex President in steel with an ETA 2824-2 movement. The ETA is very easy to service and nearly every watch tech on the planet can work on it and get parts. The watch I have runs +2 seconds per day. The Prince Date/Day is sold only in the Asian market and is not available in Europe or North America. The watch is brand new with box and papers and a 2 year international warranty that is honoured at any Rolex/Tudor boutique. The best thing about a Tudor is that it doesn't have any of the problematic semiotics that comes with wearing a Rolex. No one assumes the watch is fake or that you're a douchebag with a Rolex. Yodobashi is a reputable chain with stores all over Japan. Japanese vendors have impeccable reputations for service and honesty. There is virtually no chance that you will be ripped off buying a watch from Yodobashi. In fact, for less than half the price of the Datejust, you could fly to Tokyo, go to Yodobashi (in Akiba district), look at the watch and have a fantastic sushi dinner. You will also get a 5% discount if you use a Visa card and a further 8% discount if you show your passport (to prove you are a foreign customer) upon purchasing your watch. Google Yodobashi and type in Tudor Watch in the search menu and hit the translate button. It doesn't hurt to do a little research before you buy the datejust. Good luck my friend and happy watch hunting! : )
@simplyserge5000
@simplyserge5000 6 лет назад
Haha you’re absolutely right, it’s a huge hit and the opportunity cost is endless like a trip to Tokyo and a sushi dinner is very tempting. The Tudor date is a pretty watch too, I was seriously considering it before as well. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes it's very typical for the standard model ETA2824-2 that Steinhart uses it will be not the most accurate. But extremely durable. If it bothers you that much then def have it regulated. BTW this isn't always the case with Steinhart. My Ocean One Steinhart runs within COSC specs at plus 3 secs per day. Just being honest if you want something extremely well regulated then you'll have to step up to say a Tudor. Otherwise just don't worry about it. Take it off every couple days and reset it. If you want accurate go quartz. But if you want something mechanical that does good accuracy wise then go with that Date Just.

Hello Love your channel. Could you please do a video on your purchase of the Steinhart from a Canadian point of view. Based on your videos I’d really like one BUT I’d like your thoughts on where to buy, taxes, duty, hidden costs (if any) and after sale warranty. I’m just north of Toronto and your experience would be invaluable. Many thanks

Taxes were $80 dollars I paid at the door to fedex on delivery. No other hidden costs. The warranty is short, i forget how much exactly I think 3 months, maybe less. Check the website if you can. Also they respond back to emails quickly. Mine was running quick so I wanted to send it back but decided it’s too much of a hassle. That’s the trade off when you buy online. Good luck!

If the datejust is your dream watch and you can afford to buy it, go for it. Rolex really doesn't discount a ton especially brand new. I recently picked up a Speedmaster from jomashop, but even their discount on Rolex is under 20% for most. My personal opinion is there are a lot of better/comparable watches out there for similar money. I'd personally rather go with the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Control ( especially model Q1548530), Zenith Elite Classic 39, or Omega DeVille just to name a few.

I feel that if you buy the Rolex you will suffer pangs of guilt for spending that much money, being a young man who is trying to be sensible and plan ahead. Enjoy the Steinhart, and if after a time it has not settled to an accuracy that satisfies you have it regulated, or do it your self. Timegraphers are relatively cheap and you might enjoy being in control and having the satisfaction of optimising the regulation yourself, and you will have the Timegrapher and a few other necessary tools for opening watches etc., for future needs. Most mechanical watches vary in their time keeping depending on their position, dial up, dial down etc. Another advantage of a Timegrapher is that it will give you this information, and it is possible that you may be able to offset a gain or loss on the wrist by adopting particular position(s) when off the wrist. Also, some movements are more affected by positional changes than others. While you will expect that more time will have been spent in regulating the Rolex, given its price you may be disappointed to find that does not keep perfect time, and what price a few seconds difference? What you are left with is the cost of the Rolex name. On the other hand, I bought a Seiko SARW021with the 6R21B movement last June, set it on the 5th of this month and it is today (16 days later) running 2 seconds slow. That is how it left the factory. However, another example of it may not be so accurate from the factory, but the movement is very stable position to position and should be easy to regulate if it were necessary.
@simplyserge5000
@simplyserge5000 6 лет назад
Hey thanks for this. The more I wear my Steinhart the more I enjoy it and feel a Rolex right now is uneccesary. I’ll have to look into all these tools since I like doing everything my self. Cheers

Dude, just wear it for at least a month (do not get it regulated yet!!!!) Steinhart sends their watches out a little fast (because it's annoying as shit to have a slow watch). But over the next month, the watch will get accustomed to your wearing habits, and the mainspring will "break in". I would bet 2 Steinhart's and a Seiko Monster :) that it will settle in around 6-8 SPD (constant wear). Just enjoy the mechanical watch that you have, and if it's over 10 SPD fast around Feb 1rst. Then get it regulated (although 15 SPD is within Steinhart's tolerances and a blessing in terms of Seiko's tolerances) :P

You might be running on a 'hedonic treadmill'. First you made a '180' by starting to like the Steinhart. You read up on it. You invest in it. You are happy with it. You defend it against buying a super expensive Rolex. But deep down you feel a gnawing desire to actually own that damn Rolex after all. You look for rational reasons to convince yourself to maybe buy it, trying to assuage the cognitive dissonance about your previous standpoint on such huge expenses on something you don't need. The Steinhart starts to feel like 'settling for less'. You are not that happy anymore. At least, that's about what happened to me. Replace 'Steinhart' with 'Hamilton' and 'Rolex' with 'Omega Speedmaster'. I talked myself into owning my 'dream watch', was very happy with it for half a year, but felt increasingly uncomfortable wearing so much money on my wrist all the time. It looked good, but wasn't anywhere near accurate. Ended up selling it after a year, while it still looked new. Now, I'm happy as ever with the Hamilton, and some other watches. I guess I want to say: examine your motives and desires closely, and don't fool yourself.
