Step 1: Yarn, Swatches and Stitches for the Men's Crochet Sweater

A great-looking sweater begins with strong foundations: 1. what yarn to use; 2. what hook size to use; and 3. what stitches to use. In this video I will explain how these three pieces work together to create a crochet fabric that's perfect for men's style sweaters. Your homework is to choose the yarn, practice the stitches (the Half-Double crochet in the Front Loop and the Extended Half-Double crochet in the Front Loop) by making swatches with different hook sizes and select the fabric that displays both tight stitching and good drape. This way you will be ready to start your sweater in the next video.

Im so glad there are more men on here and especially one who doesn't cater to the female population. Men's crochet apparel is so underrepresented in this community.

Fabio, I've seen your work on fb for ages and so glad you've decided to share your process with the world. So excited to make my own version as I'm an amply built guy and finding good well fitting patterns for someone with my build us almost impossible!!! If I have any constructive comments it's simply that that may be the best yarn for the actual piece but it doesn't demonstrate well on screen. Otherwise I'm absolutely on board as a subscriber!!! X

That was a very professional informative video Fabio, thank you. I've crocheted for many years, but found new ideas here. I did have to rerun several times before I got the idea of how you looped your yarn on the crochet hook to start your foundation row, perhaps you could consider showing that stage several times, as you do the stitch itself. Good work, I look forward to seeing your next video.

He's doing great right!?! I think he was also smart in providing his Intro video first (I subscribed then - with notification of his upcoming videos!). I haven't made a sweater yet either, but mostly because I haven't been pleased with the crochet stitches used for crochet sweaters. When I saw photos of Fabio's sweaters - I thought 'OK....I'm not a dude, but this guy is saying what I've been saying for years!'. I am optimistic there is a crocheted sweater in my future too!! 👍 😉 🤞

@MariaXuxenaKnittingTutorials
@MariaXuxenaKnittingTutorials Месяц назад
Thanks for making these videos! You're 100% correct that the primary function of making swatches is to decide if the drape and texture of the fabric suit the garment you're planning. Just about everyone will say that gauge swatches are to ensure you're getting the number of stitches to the inch needed so the garment will come out the expected size. And, yes, that plays into things if you're following a pattern, but even then, swatch for drape, then adjust the pattern for your unique gauge. I find your take on the hdc through the front loop as the ideal stitch for pullovers is spot on as well as starting with a stretchy foundation stitch instead of a chain. Have you noticed that the overwhelming crochet sweater patterns are open-work flowing cardigans or tunics? I'd bet money it's because of the reasons you cover here in terms of the weight and drape of the resulting fabric. Of course, few men will wear open work patterns, so this, I think, tells us why there are so few patterns for men. I look forward to your perspective on top-down construction as you continue this series.

Fabio, you are a natural! What a great video - very smooth & professional 👍🏻 Interesting yarn choice. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished results. Love that color. I like the hdc stitch too. It’s the best of both worlds when it comes to wearables (IMHO). As a side note, have you ever tried linked double crochet? It eliminates the spaces between the dc’s creating a less open fabric. There are many tutorials on RU-vid. My favorite is probably by Crystal at Bagoday Crochet. Might be something to try if/when you get bored with the hdc🤷🏼‍♀️ Congrats on your channel having over 3k subscribers. It’s growing super quickly. I’m so happy for you. The crochet community on YT is very supportive. So happy you joined! Cheers from FL😺

Thank you so much for your kind words and the support! ❤️ To answer your question, yes, I tried the linked DC stitch. It’s beautiful and very decorative, but unfortunately, the extra yarn used to link the DC stitches, ads weight and rigidity to the stitches: the opposite attributes I need to achieve in a fabric for sweaters.
@ravenlunatic1177
@ravenlunatic1177 Месяц назад

Hi love what you have discovered. I have been on a similar journey and came to the conclusion that( uk stitches ) a single crochet then one chain then the next row single crochet into the chain space makes a nice texture , drapey and not too close/stiff.

I really appreciate your video! I will have to replay how you started your foundation because I normally make a slip knot and will need to watch in slow motion how to repeat it your way! The yarn used is a little fuzzy to be able to see the stitch definition as to where to place the hook as you make your foundation, but I'm hoping that I will be able to tell the 2nd time I view it (and in slow motion if I need to!). I am determined to master it, as I am in agreement with the result you get. FYI: People think I'm crazy that a half double crochet (hdc) is one of my preferred stitches, so it's good to hear I'm not alone. I also am not one to care for airy/holy stitches. No offense to you or others who like granny squares and the like, but it's really popular these days - and not my cup of tea. SOoooo, it's refreshing to see styles that I prefer! Thanks! 👍
