The NBA has had a referee problem for over 20 years, it’s worse even now with sports betting being legal

tim donaghy was right. he wasn’t the only rogue ref, there are plenty of others guys blatantly ignoring hard fouls and whistling players for breathing too hard. there needs to be a league wide fraud watch on them

The crazy part is the ref was standing right there and didn't blow the whistle. This was almost as bad as when the refs didn't call out of bounds when KD clearly was a few years ago.

Its no surprise that in the last season or so, refereeing has been exponentially worse alongside gambling being openly discussed & promoted by the NBA.

The officiating has been atrocious in the NFL and NBA for the past decade. Why? Too much gambling money involved?

Easy fixes: 1. Win challenge = keep challenge 2. Can challenge at any time (e.g. even if there is a no-call). If lose challenge, 1 tech FT + possession to the opposition 3. Give 2 challenges each half, reset at halftime 4. Make challenge process much quicker

Step 1. When the last 2-min report acknowledges a bad call, anyone who complains about that call should NOT be fine. Step 2. Force refs to regular (every few months) educational coursea with re-examinations, reviewing and examining bad calls from the last few months. Step 3. Hire external independent evaluators for referees.

I remember one Celtics x Lakers game in the Garden that LeBron was driving to a layup in the final seconds, Tatum hits LeBron’s arm in the front of the ref and was a no call, absolutely one of the worst officiating that I have seen live.

Ever since the implement of the challenge rule, the ending of nba games has slowly gotten worse each season. Before the challenge, the last 2 minutes of a game was under a microscope but the draw back that ppl had for it was it made the game screech to halt in pace. A game with the challenge rule in the last 2 minutes could feel like it takes about 5 minutes to get to the end of the game, but pre challenge rule it could feel like 10 minutes which can definitely upset fans for a games last 2 minutes to go. Since the plays of a game can’t be reviewed in the last minutes it has led to more mistakes on the refs and while I like the challenge system that has been a weakness it has

It's literally been the case all year, from the first or 2nd week of the season. Even the on-court commentators have called this mess out. Then they penalize coaches and players for calling out blatant screw-ups by the refs, only to come back and say, "Oops...you were right. Our bad." In what universe does that make sense??

The problems is mostly the restriction on Reviews. The NBA needs to do what the NFL does. Make all plays under 2 minutes reviewable at the review center. They could signal to the referee the play needs to be looked at. This would have prevented a lot of the problems weve see lately. There is still a massive inconsistency issue because so much of Basketball in general is subjective.
