Hi, name of the IOs is just LM324 (google it), which has output current 40mA (available on Texas Instrument), but you can use any operating amplifier with output current min. 20mA.

The reason is because a different number of LEDs are lit at once. If you had a single resistor on the common side, you would blow LEDs if less than all of them were on - if the resistor was set at a value to limit the resistance on the entire array. On the other hand, if the common resistor was a value to limit the current on just one LED, then when a second LED was turned on, both would be half as bright.. 3rd, and all three would be 1/3rd the brightness etc. - Does that make sense?

i was used to use s.c. buffered driver as we vall them in europe. and i came once to the problem that they were in no way adjustable like an ac-voltmeter and also could feed onliy seven or eight leds at once. Nowadays its only curirosity, but i still like what you did

I need at least 2 of this but the meter will control by a potentiometer not sound/audio. The control will vary the leds from first to last,and when the meter is reached its max or red/last light , it will register a number on a counter, so on.....thanks

You must open it in Eagle. It opens fine, both the board and the schematic.

Taht's very cool :) What is the exact name of the LM324 an where you got that? Because i think the normal LM324 only can 8mA.

Im building this VU meter, but on the PC board is shows the input going through R83 then the diode, but the schematic shows the input through the diode first. Which is the correct way?

LM324 is a stereo OPAmp. When comparators like LB1405 and LM3914 are readily available why this decision was taken?

On BRD file there is shown that the resistors are 680Ω,but on the SCH file there says that there are 330Ω resistors and now I don't know which are they. And one question.What does it mean 8k2 for resistors?:)

What does R5 (100k) depend on? What does it change? I am currently working on the same project and i am testing this with two LM324N's...but it seems that the last 4 leds are always on...can someone help?

And on the SCH file says that the capacitor is 47uF and on BRD file it says that is 470uF....Can you give me the whole list of parts please?

Maybe the output from your Amp isnt huge eneugh. The other thing could be that you connected something wrong or your 0Volts are interruptet. If you use a higher DC Voltages it should lite up more LEDs (Watch the Current, this VU-meter is not that good in Handling high currents). I would recomment you to take a Multimeter and test all your connections. If this doesnt help maybe one of your components is broken (happens sometimes).

not costly to make. led's are like 100 for 5 or 6 bucks. resistors are also cheap. rest of the parts are anywhere from 2-10 bucks. hard part is the programming.
