I was introduced to Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs in the early 80’s when a college classmate asked me if I wanted to be an usher for a band playing at one of our mid sized auditoriums on campus in Southern California. I had been listening to mostly rock and jazz guitar bands of the era and had been to many live shows, big and small venues. Of course the band playing at my college was non other than the incredible Dixie Dregs on their Dregs of the Earth tour!! I had never heard or seen music like this before and such an incredible display of highly skilled virtuosos, led by Steve Morse. They were so tight and polished. Every note and composition that was played was done to perfection. There were only a few dozen people in the audience, but the Dixie Dregs played with such intensity and poise. During the set intermission, Alan Sloan came out and played Flight of the Bumble Bee for us. I’ve been following and seen live many times Mr. Morse, over many decades in the many bands and projects that he’s led or been a part of. What I’ve always respected most about his playing is not how great a guitarist he is, but it’s always been how he can create and compose such beautiful and intricate music, with such exquisite melodic layering and connectivity. How does that come out of one’s mind? He’s extremely gifted. I saw the Dregs in a basement cafeteria at the University of MD probably in the lates 80’s. The band hand recently broken up for a short time, but got back together without Sloan on the violin. Steve not only played his guitar parts but he also played the violin parts as much as he could. Absolutely unbelievable stuff. After the show, I remember walking out of the cafeteria and Morse was just ahead of me. I caught up to him and told him he was the Bach of Rock. He just looked back and smiled. Great memories. Thanks Steve for all of the notes and music. Your music will live on and it was a privilege to hear and see you play. ☮️

Many years ago I was at a solo concert from Steve (in Germany). He told that normally he comes with a bass player for such a kind of mini concert, but the bass player had gotten sick. So he turned up alone and started playing a nylon string guitar and worked his way up from "Bach" on a classical guitar to the electric guitar, using a sampler to back himself and with increasing amounts of gain as well. That was a loooong time ago in the beginning of the 80s when samplers where relatively new.... 🙂 Anyhow, it was one of the music nights I will always remember. He is really a nice guy -- besides being a monster guitar player of course :-D

With so many online guitar tutorials it's sometimes very difficult to see which fingers they're using and precisely where on the neck they're playing, with Steve's playing technique it's all absolutely clear!

Already spotted that this guy is a tone freak: his pickup cavity is filled with foam, Satriani style, the bridge is a les paul stop tail, bolt on guitar for the snap, nitro finish for the resonance. GG!

So many cats in 10 different bands that never tour, just make a one off record, or make a record every 5 years. I'd love to see Steve do more work like this and that, get a little outside of his wheelhouse of what he plays solo.

IMO only Jeff Beck is a better guitarist. Steve Morse is undoubtedly not one of the GOAT Guitarists, he is one of the GOAT gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of meeting ( numerous times I'd like to state ). I have nothing but peace,❤, & understanding for him & his super cool wife, who is battling cancer as I post this. Thank you.👍
