At 1:58 Steve is close to playing the Sicilian dragon. He would just need his pawn c5 and block the check with the Bishop. That's the Moscow variation. Perhaps Steve may want to look into the Dragon as a weapon against 1e4. Not too theory heavy and can lead to some nice attacking chess! As for that guess the ELO, the fact that you can fudge it just illustrates how pointless it is. Well done Steve!!!!!!!

The problem with guessing the elo is that it depends on the opponent moves as well. If your opponent puts the win in the palm of your hands, then you can have a near perfect game with low guess the elo. There would still be a difference in how a low elo player would convert vs how a high elo player would convert, but that seems very hard to me for a program to guess. That's why I've never cared that much about guess the elo and also acuracy % 😉 Also, good job to Steve for hitting this milestone 😎

Yes, sometimes the best moves just jump out at you. Sometimes it feels you have a choice of 20.

Congratulations to Steve. I totally take your point regarding the Elo estimates, you would think that giving a different rating depending on your starting grade is counter-intuitive and indeed misleading. I think the point is that the Elo estimate just isn’t very accurate and just because you play close to 100% accurate against a weak player doesn’t mean you can play at IM level. If your opponent leaves a piece en prise then it’s not very difficult to play the best move. One experiment you could try though, is to only delete your subscribers Elo from the .pgn. Then see if a) you get Elo estimates at all and b) is it different to what you obtained with both Elo’s in the .pgn. I had some other unrelated comments, but I’ll keep it short so as not to ramble! Well done Steve!

I tried your suggestion. If you provide only one ELO, you get the same result either way round, which makes me think they're simply using the same ELO for both players. Good idea.

@@ChessBootCamp Interesting. Is the single Elo method different to using both grades? What if you change the single grade? That would support your hypothesis.

@@rojavida See today's training game video.. It gets weirder, as I've also noticed it uses the OPPONENT'S ELO as a factor when calculating your performance as well!

You're right about the Game Review elo estimate issue. How could the analysis say Steve's opponent was 1850 when they lost by blundering their rook in such a rudimentary way?

I wouldn't envy the developers the task of predicting that, but I can't shake the feeling they can do better. Why base it on starting ELO anyway? That's not an exact indicator of your strength or potential. Surely it would be more fun to say, "Wow I played a 600 game" or "I just played at 2300 level!"
